  1. Michael Kelly said American Athletic Conference members have held several meetings with commissioner Mike Aresco over the past week. TAMPA — American Athletic Conference members have spoken about the possibility of adding schools left behind during the most recent round of conference realignment. USF athletic director Michael Kelly said Friday that he and administrators from other conference schools have been in communication with AAC commissioner Mike Aresco after six Pac-12 schools announced their departures for other conferences in recent weeks. The remaining Pac-12 members — Washington State, Oregon State, Cal and Stanford — would be considered among the best schools left behind by this round of realignment. ESPN’s Heather Dinich first reported last week that the AAC was open to adding a combination of all four schools from the Pac-12. read more: https://www.tampabay.com/sports/bulls/2023/08/11/michael-kelly-aac-conference-realignment-pac-12-cal-stanford-mike-aresco/?outputType=amp
  2. During the Bear's Bank segment, the Bear, who is 22-12-1 in picks this season, says there are a lot of big double-digit lines which he thinks will not come to fruition - perfect situation is North Texas, which he says "has nothing to play for - already clinched their division and a spot in the Conference USA championship against FAU, Rice has played better lately, North Texas has played a lot of close one-score games, nothing on the line for North Texas, would be surprised if Rice gets blown out at home by more than 12 points, North Texas has nothing to play for today..." They go one to say having Bear go to the North Texas vs. Rice game is "sorta like the turkey sandwich, leftovers - but they are delicious!"

  4. We need reconsider our "Big 12 aspirations". The market right now is saturated and they have diluted a lot of what makes college football unique and great with conference realignment. And TV executives aren't all in like they were in the first round of super-conference creation. It looks like the only way a Big 12 expansion would be approved by their TV partners would be stealing a popular team from one the other P5 conferences. BYU is the only team available that actually has a good foothold in a new market for the Big 12. Take a look at this story featured at the link below. If you were AD besides just winning what would you want UNT to try to do in light of this information? http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2016/08/01/Media/Big-12-TV.aspx
  5. According to 2016 Nielsen data ESPN lost over 1.5 million subscribers from February to the end of May this year. That drops ESPN to 89,465,000 subscriber homes, a precipitous decline from the network's total number of 2013 subscribers which was over 99 million. Based on these numbers over the past four months ESPN lost an average of 10,400 subscribers a day. http://www.foxsports.com/college-footbal...tes-052816
  6. Disney and other media companies have been hit by the trend of "cord-cutting" as younger viewers opt for streaming services over cable and satellite TV channels, and investors are particularly focussed on how ESPN, one of the strongest cable brands, weathers the storm. http://www.business-standard.com/article...064_1.html
  7. http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2016/05/02/In-Depth/Media-rights.aspx Conference USA, too, is expected to see its annual rights fee drop from the $7 million per year range to just around $1 million per year, sources said, as the conference replaced bigger college brands like Central Florida, Houston and Memphis with smaller ones like Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. The deal with CBS and ESPN still has not been announced formally, but the conference says it will soon make an announcement. Conference USA’s current deals with Fox and CBS expire in June. Fox opted not to renew.
  8. North Carolina offensive coordinator Seth Littrell will be named coach at North Texas, a source told ESPN. Littrell and the Tar Heels will play in their first ACC title game Saturday against Clemson. Littrell, 37, has been at UNC the past two years. Before joing the Tar Heels, Littrell was an offensive coordinator at Indiana (2012-13) and Arizona (2009-11). He also was an assistant at Texas Tech from 2005-08. Littrell is a 2001 Oklahoma graduate. Littrell was one of two finalists, along with TCU co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, a source said. Littrell replaces Dan McCarney, who was fired midway through this season after an 0-5 start and 22-32 record with the Mean Green. read more: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/14294027/north-texas-mean-green-tabs-north-carolina-tar-heels-oc-seth-littrell-new-head-coach
  9. Woot! We're ranked 4th in the country! Congratulations coaching staff! I'm amused at the blurb they wrote for us:
  10. A potent pass rush returns, but gone is a veteran O-line. The Mean Green will need a QB to emerge for any shot at .500. Offense How the Mean Green beat you: With no red zone TOs, UNT scored at least a field goal on an FBS-best 94.3 percent of trips; it just needs more visits (35). Enter C-USA’s leading returning WR, Carlos Harris (869 yards). How you beat the Mean Green: With three four-year line starters gone, senior QB Andrew McNulty (6 TDs, 7 INTs) will face a lot of pressure. Defense How the Mean Green beat you: The D dropped the QB 33 times at an 8.4 percent clip (17th in the FBS), and the line goes eight deep, including Des Chad Polk and Tillman Johnson (10Π sacks combined). How you beat the Mean Green: UNT’s wheels came off inside the 20—the D allowed a TD 74.3 percent of the time. Only Texas Tech was worse. read more: http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/110311/north-texas-mean-green-preview

  12. “When all things are equal with records and whatnot, if someone has played a tougher nonconference schedule, it would usually benefit you,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said, while noting he believes tough nonconference games would have helped in the BCS era as well. “Otherwise, why play? Otherwise, you might as well just schedule three yawners that no one will pay attention to and not put yourself at risk of losing that game.” Any nonconference slip up from a Big 12 favorite could come back to haunt the conference as a whole, particularly since the last conference champion to finish the regular season undefeated was Texas in 2009. A one-loss Big 12 champion opens itself up for debates over its worthiness for a College Football Playoff Berth and a softer résumé won’t help its cause with the SEC, Pac-12, ACC and Big Ten likely to have teams in similar situations. 13. The Mid-American Conference has agreed to a new 13-year contract with ESPN, according published reports by The Associated Press and The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer on Monday. The new agreement would give the network all television distribution rights to the MAC’s football games through the 2026-27 season. The new deal is expected to give ESPN rights to all men’s basketball as well, and a select number of women’s basketball and olympic sports games. A formal announcement is expected on Tuesday. The MAC’s current deal with ESPN is for $1.4 million per year, and is split evenly among the conference’s member institutions. That number is considerably less than the amount paid out to Conference-USA and the Mountain West — two other ‘Group of Five’ conferences. C-USA ($11.3 million) and the MWC ($12 millions) have deals with CBS and ESPN, respectively. The MAC had three years remaining on an eight-year contract signed with ESPN in 2009, but the media giant was open to renegotiating terms of the contract given the niche in weeknight football programming that the conference has provided — at a bargain rate — over the last decade. 14. Texas 31, North Texas 14: Charlie Strong's debut game is up and down with the Longhorn defense taking a shutout into the fourth quarter but with the offense struggling to pull away from North Texas. Ultimately, UT is never really threatened but has plenty of room to grow after Week 1. Other prediction of note: Baylor 63, SMU 42: Baylor's offense does what we've come to expect from Baylor's offense, but the Bears defense and secondary in particular struggle in the season opener against the Mustangs. BU quarterback Bryce Petty, once again making things look easier than they are, passes 400-plus yards and four touchdowns including two to Antwan Goodley as SMU never really has a hope of outscoring Art Briles' crew despite having plenty of success on offense. read more: http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/86567/predicting-the-2014-season-week-1
  15. DENTON, Texas -- North Texas coach Dan McCarney is getting a new five-year contract after leading the Mean Green to nine wins and their first bowl victory in 11 seasons. School officials said Tuesday, only hours before spring practice began, that the deal was imminent. Attorneys were reviewing the new contract that will take McCarney through the 2018 season. "What they did was, in putting a contract in place really, is showing appreciation for changing the culture at this place. It's showing appreciation for how we do it, and the way we've done it on the field, in the classroom, in Denton, and how we handle things," McCarney said. "I think it's a sign of support for all of my guys, all of my staff, my program, our program. ... I appreciate that opportunity to stay here. I'm not looking to leave. I love this place." read more: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10552286/dan-mccarney-getting-new-5-year-deal-north-texas-mean-green
  16. Full Story. Interesting that this is coming to FBS as a way to pay coaches. Seems like an interesting way to stretch AD budgets if you can make it work.
  17. What it means: This is a huge win for North Texas. It marks the Mean Green's third bowl win in school history and first since 2002. It had been a while since they've even been to a bowl game (2004 was their last trip) but Dan McCarney and Co. appear to be headed in the right direction. After finishing 4-8 a year ago, finishing 9-4 this season is a nice turnaround for the Mean Green. Read more: http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/92226/instant-analysis-north-texas-36-unlv-14
  18. DALLAS -- It was clear at the end of Wednesday's Heart of Dallas Bowl that North Texas' fans weren't quite sure what do to after a bowl win. Some of them contemplated rushing the field and in the end, maybe 500 of them decided to join the team in celebration at the 50-yard line, doing so in the most calm and orderly "storming" of a field you'll ever see. You can't blame them. North Texas hadn't won a bowl game since 2002. But on Wednesday, after struggling to get going in the first half, the Mean Green dominated the second half in a 36-14 win over UNLV. Wednesday was one of those rare opportunities afforded a school like North Texas. With Dallas-Fort Worth area rivals SMU and TCU sitting at home for the bowl season, the Mean Green went 8-4 (6-2 in Conference USA) and happily accepted an invitation to stay close to home for bowl season and play in the Heart of Dallas Bowl at the Cotton Bowl. 19. DALLAS -- Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby joked that he's glad to avoid the topic of conference realignment, but he had plenty to say on another topic Monday: NCAA reform. During his 45-minute state of the conference remarks to open Big 12 media days in Dallas, Bowlsby stressed the importance of achieving "transformative change" to the NCAA, its leadership system and its future. "I really do think we need to reconfigure the leadership of the organization," Bowlsby said. "I don't think we can at this point in time move forward, and we certainly haven't been able to configure an agenda that made the changes we need to make." Bowlsby expressed his concerns about the effectiveness of NCAA enforcement and the difficulty of advancing real changes to the system. And he certainly has major changes in mind. Bowlsby believes it's time to look at establishing new federations to separate sports and how they're supervised. "It's probably unrealistic to think that we can manage football and field hockey by the same set of rules," Bowlsby said. "I think some kind of reconfiguration of how we govern is in order." 20. The Mountain West Conference has agreed to tie-ins with six bowl games starting in 2014, sources said. The Mountain West's six bowl tie-ins are expected to be six-year deals from 2014-19. The Las Vegas Bowl will get the first selection from the Mountain West, while the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego will get the second selection, sources said. The Hawaii, Armed Forces in Fort Worth, Texas, and New Mexico bowls will share the third, fourth and fifth selections. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho, will get the league's sixth selection, sources said. Despite a number of bowls changing conference affiliations after this season, the final year of the current four-year bowl cycle, the Mountain West retained all of its previous six tie-ins. The league also is considering adding a seventh bowl in 2014, sources said. 21. The seventh selection from the ACC was contracted to play in the game against an at-large team before C-USA completed the deal to fill the spot. C-USA and bowl officials will determine which selection from C-USA will play in the bowl, the sources said. The Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman, set for Dec. 27 with a 2:30 p.m. ET kickoff, will be the sixth bowl affiliated with C-USA. 22. "It was fully explored," Delany said of a 10-game league schedule. "It would have been nice, but we were having difficulty seeing 28 nonconference games and getting accomplished what we want in terms of major matchups. We felt we'd have a much harder time getting to seven home games. "We just thought it was a reach. Who's to say in the future where we may go, but right now, we felt nine was the right place to be." The league's athletic directors and presidents also approved a scheduling model that includes at least one team from a major FBS conference per year and no FCS teams. Delany hopes the model will be in place league-wide by 2016. The league approved a nine-game schedule in August 2011 but went back to eight after forming a scheduling partnership with the Pac-12. When the partnership fell apart last summer, the Big Ten decided to keep an eight-game league schedule, which will remain for the next three seasons. The Big Ten's initial division alignment for the 2011 season was based primarily on competitive balance rather than geography. Teams such as Wisconsin and Illinois were moved in the opposite division from some of their rivals, and several top rivalries, such as Michigan-Ohio State, were protected with crossover games. 23. North Texas coach Dan McCarney underwent heart bypass surgery last Friday, sources told ESPN. McCarney, 59, acknowledged in a statement that he had a medical procedure but wasn't specific. He returned to the office Friday, a week after the surgery. Doctors recommended McCarney undergo the surgery following a routine office visit earlier in the week. "The medical staff was outstanding," McCarney said in a statement released through North Texas. "I put my future in their hands and everything went great. I have already begun the road to recovery and am excited to be back in the office working toward making the Mean Green football program better."
