Hines said he started playing football in the third grade. He recalled the feeling of scoring touchdowns and hearing the cheers, but said playing sports was also his way of making friends growing up.
Playing football at Dekaney since his freshman year, Hines moved up to varsity as a sophomore. He won the starting quarterback spot as a junior and started every game en route to the school’s first state title in 2011.
The quarterback hopes to improve his passing, accuracy, timing and management of the game this season. A duel threat, Amendola said
Hines rushed for over 500 yards and threw for over 1,000 last year and Amendola believes he will have to take a more prominent role in this offense.
The coach thinks Hines has the tools to be a college quarterback some day, and colleges seem to agree, as he has been recruited by Houston, Rice, Texas State, North Texas and Colorado.
“I’m really anxious, but I’m also really anxious about this upcoming season, so I try not to think about (college) too much,” Hines said.
