  1. The Charlotte 49ers’ search for their next men’s basketball head coach is narrowing — and fast. Ron Sanchez, who had been the 49ers’ head coach for five seasons and was Mike Hill’s first hire as athletic director, stepped down last Tuesday, returning to his previous school to become associate head coach under Tony Bennett with the Virginia Cavaliers. Assistant coach Aaron Fearne was named interim head coach, and his responsibilities have already shifted as summer workouts started Monday. The Charlotte 49ers – whose season ended Wednesday with a first-round National Invitation Tournament loss to Providence – have shown consistent improvement in the Atlantic 10 under third-year coach Alan Major. Charlotte’s win totals under Major have grown each season, from 10 to 13 to 21. They went 8-8 this season in the A-10, a league that sent five teams to the NCAA tournament. Now, the 49ers will try to keep that momentum going in a new, yet familiar, league. It’s back to Conference USA, a league that usually sends just one team to the NCAA and bears little resemblance to the one the 49ers left in 2005. The move to return to Conference USA was football-driven (Charlotte begins the sport next fall and will make the move from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision to C-USA and the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2015). But, despite having to get accustomed to a new set of travel destinations – west Texas, south Florida anyone? – it might be a good move for the basketball program.
