He earned $144,000 to push his tour-leading total to $515,403, with the top 25 on the money list getting PGA Tour cards. "I didn't envision any of this," said Ortiz, also the winner in Panama in March and Mexico in April. "To be honest, I came out this year without any expectations.   3. So Carlos Ortiz is playing the Utah open this week, and made the cut. At -7 he is 6 shots behind after 2 days, and tied for 24th. Remember that a win would get this UNT alumn automatically promoted to the PGA tour this year. if he doesn win another one this year, he will be going there next year anyway.
  4. The PGA Tour's new qualifying format, implemented last year, removed the direct route from college to the top tour. The change shows with one look at this year's Web.com Tour money list. Of the players ranked in the top 25 - the ones who, as of today, would earn playing privileges on the PGA Tour for the 2014-15 season - six are rookies who turned pro in the past two years. That includes leading money-winner Carlos Ortiz, who graduated from North Texas in August 2013, and Sebastian Cappelen, who tied for ninth in the NCAA men's golf tournament in May and won his first start on the Web.com Tour in June.
