Today was a fruitful one when it comes to UNT football info and tidbits. If you’ve been following along, UNT officials acknowledged that Portland State, an FCS program, will visit Apogee Stadium on Oct. 10 next season. What I didn’t get to on the blog was the terms of the contract. UNT will pay $425,000 to bring in PSU. I also got a chance to sit down with Dan McCarney for a few minutes for the end of the season “State of the Green” evaluation. Here were the key news items: – Everyone who was on UNT’s staff this season and is expected to return (everyone outside of retiring defensive coordinator John Skladany) is still around. McCarney is in the evaluation process of what went on this season and how the Mean Green can improve next year. A hope hatched nearly a year ago now, as North Texas celebrated arguably the finest moment in the history of its football program that a new era had dawned for the Mean Green. UNT had just won a bowl game, knocking off UNLV in front of a pro-UNT crowd in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That game, that season, was one that UNT hoped would change everything. Not long after the sun set on the Sun Bowl on Saturday night, the time had arrived to face the harsh reality. That one big season — as remarkable as it was — isn’t going to be the quick fix that many Mean Green fans hoped it would be. UNT’s 35-17 loss to the Miners was just the latest indication.
