DENTON — Let me take you back to 1999. The Boise State football program wasn’t much different from the North Texas program back then. Both schools were in the Big West Conference and both had small fan bases. Boise averaged 20,107 fans for its home schedule that season and North Texas 13,752. Only 11,648 showed up in Denton on Oct. 16 of that year to see North Texas defeat Boise State, 17-10. That dropped the Broncos to 4-3. But Boise State has not been the same program since then. The Broncos won their final five games of the regular season to capture the Big West, then upset Louisville in the Humanitarian Bowl. Since its last visit to Denton, Boise State has become a brand name in college football. The Broncos have posted a 173-28 record with victories over Arizona State, Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, TCU and Virginia Tech. Boise has won 11 championships in three different conferences, participated in 14 bowls and finished seasons with a top-20 ranking nine times. If Boise State can do it, why can’t North Texas? If one underdog can do it, why can’t another, especially one that calls Texas its home recruiting base? Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick says he was sent home from the team's trip to the Hawaii Bowl for something he didn't do. Both Southwick and fellow quarterback Nick Patti were suspended from the game for violating team rules, and while Southwick has been sent home, Patti has since been reinstated. On Sunday Southwick told KTVB in Boise that he'd been sent home for urinating off a hotel balcony, though Southwick maintains he did no such thing. Southwick says it was another Boise State player who did it, and that he witnessed the player doing it on Thursday evening. Southwick then found out he was being accused of doing it on Friday, and also admitted he lost his temper when he found out he was being sent home. "It just turned to finger pointing, and it ended up being three people against one person saying something," said Southwick. "And I guess the temper tantrum of one person didn't look good and there was no investigation. This was an absolute rushed decision, probably made in about 20 minutes." Southwick even took a polygraph test to clear his name, saying he wants to share the results of the test with Boise State coaches and administrators. When Boise State first accepted the Big East's invitation to join as a football-only member, in December 2011, the conference was a full-fledged BCS member set to unveil a 12-team league. With name-brand programs like Louisville and the Broncos, it was poised to capitalize on media markets like Rutgers' and Louisville's to cash in on a lucrative new television contract. Fast forward 12 months, and the Big East is officially a "have-not" in the forthcoming college football playoff. Louisville and Rutgers are gone,. The low-profile likes of Tulane and East Carolina have been added to preserve the two-division setup. The league might not be able to sign a TV deal worth even as much as the $1.4 billion contract that they turned down in 2011. So after the Broncos dragged their feet when it came to officially leaving the Mountain West for the Big East this past summer, it's no surprise that rumors have sprung up claiming Boise has been looking to return to its more geographically friendly digs in the MWC. “We’ve had many conversations with Boise State and many conversations with others that want to make sure Boise State has their sports situated in a place where they really want their sports to be,” Big East Interim Commissioner Joe Bailey told the Idaho Statesman on Wednesday. “As to what is going to happen, I can’t comment because a) I don’t know and I won’t guess.” Read more here: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2012/06/28/2171353/big-east-boss-no-guess-on-bsus.html#storylink=cpy
