SAN MARCOS — When Everett Withers was introduced Thursday as the new head football coach at Texas State, his first official appearance on campus was more like a pep rally than press conference. There were more cheerleaders, players, assistants from the former regime and well-heeled boosters than members of the media in attendance, with some of the fans even taking the microphone to query Withers about his plans to jump-start the Bobcats’ program after a dismal 3-9 season. “I’ve got a plan, and it’s infallible,” Withers said. “I’m not a patient man, and I won’t ask for patience from (our fans). Fan stands for ‘fanatic.’ Fanatics want something right now. I get it. I understand it. I’m ready to go to work.” Dennis Franchione retired on Dec. 22. Withers comes to San Marcos after compiling a 19-7 record and leading James Madison to back-to-back NCAA Division I FCS playoff appearances and a conference championship. James Madison also set a school record with a 14-game regular-season winning streak after the Dukes won the final seven games of the 2014 season and began 2015 with a 7-0 record. read more: http://www.statesman.com/news/sports/college-football/withers-calls-texas-state-gold-mine-is-ready-to-go/npzYD/

North Texas --- which is picked to win the West division of Conference USA (Louisiana Tech, Rice, Southern Miss, UTEP and UTSA) --- returns only nine starters. That’s the second-fewest in the FBS, so it’s hard to see them coming to Austin and spoiling Charlie Strong’s Texas coaching debut. The Mean Green are replacing three-year starter Derek Thompson at quarterback with veteran backup Andrew McNulty or junior college transfer Josh Greer. A decision is expected in the coming days... Also gone is Brandin Byrd, who rushed for 1,000 yards as a senior. The battle in the trenches will be the one to watch in this game. Four offensive linemen return for the Mean Green. The last time the Longhorns and Mean Green played (Sept. 2, 2006), it was a 56-7 stomping for Texas to open the 2006 season, and it pushed the defending national champions’ winning streak to 21 games. This was Colt McCoy’s first college start --- and his very first pass was a touchdown to Limas Sweed. Texas bottled up North Texas’ running game, surrending only 28 yards. Talk after the game centered on a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown in Columbus the next week against top-ranked Ohio State. The Eanes school district could select a lone finalist by next week, according to communications director Claudia McWhorter. Eanes school district policy requires the district to post the job for 10 school days, but state law and district policy does permit the district to make a hire before the 10 days have expired if there is an immediate need for a certified position during the school year, and athletic director falls under that provision. Due to the immeidate need, the school board does not have to approve the hire. Rampant rumors about the hiring of Todd Dodge as Westlake’s new head football coach could be moving beyond speculation. Dodge is the current head football coach and athletic director at Marble Falls High School. Dajon Williams will continue to wear green in college. Connally head coach Howard McMahan confirmed to the American-Statesman on Wednesday that his senior quarterback had given a verbal commitment to North Texas. The news was first reported on Wednesday by the Friday Fanstand Twitter account. According to Rivals.com, the six-foot-three-inch, 180-pound Williams had also received a scholarship offer from the University of Montana.
