DENTON, TEXAS North Texas made a big breakthrough last season winning nine games, including a bowl on New Year's Day. Now comes a significant test for coach Dan McCarney and the Mean Green after their first winning record in nine seasons. They will be trying to do it again while replacing so many starters. "It's fun, it's exciting, it's nerve-wracking when you have so many guys that you don't know who your best guy's going to be, don't know who your starters are going to be," McCarney said. Four of the Mean Green's five returning offensive starters are linemen, three of them seniors with at least 34 career starts. That means all those new starters at the skill positions should be well-protected. Linebacker Derek Akunne and three players in the secondary account for the four returning defensive starters. "We've tried to build in our program, and embed it in the culture of this program, expect to win, believe you can win, regardless of who's back, who's not back, who started, who didn't start, who played, didn't play," McCarney said. "Regardless of all that stuff ... it's a culture of trust, it's a culture of leadership and it's a culture of expectations to win, and we have to build on that every day." North Texas is 18-19 in three seasons under McCarney, a drastic improvement from the 13-58 record the six years before that. Here are five things to watch this season for North Texas, which won seven of its last eight games in 2013, and capped its first Conference USA season winning the Heart of Dallas Bowl: Read more here: http://www.islandpacket.com/2014/08/14/3258213/lot-of-change-for-north-texas.html#storylink=cpy

DENTON, Texas (AP) - North Texas quarterback Derek Thompson can genuinely appreciate how far the Mean Green have come in his college career. Thompson's final game at North Texas will be on New Year's Day when the Mean Green play their first bowl game since 2004, against UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. North Texas (8-4) is wrapping up its third season under coach Dan McCarney. Read more: http://www.kltv.com/story/24308502/north-texas-impressive-transition-to-bowl-team

DENTON, Texas (AP) -- When Dan McCarney looks around the North Texas practice field, the coach is finally seeing what most NCAA Division I programs take for granted. For the first time in McCarney's three seasons, the Mean Green have 85 scholarship players. ''More guys that look like Division I football players,'' McCarney said. ''It's taken quite some time to replenish this roster to get it to where we can be competitive.'' That translates to players, even the 16 returning starters, having to work harder for jobs. ''Where there's been no competition going on in many positions the first two years that I've been here,'' the coach said. ''There were bodies there, but I'm talking about real competition, Division I competition, guys that have a chance to play winning football at this level.'' That comes at a good time with North Texas stepping up to Conference USA after the past 12 seasons in the Sun Belt. The Mean Green won Sun Belt titles and went to bowl games from 2001-04, but won only 13 games the next six years. McCarney is 9-15 so far. His goal in his third season? DENTON, Texas — North Texas coach Dan McCarney is back at work in his office a week after undergoing a heart procedure. While the coach wasn’t specific about his medical treatment, McCarney said Friday in a statement from the school that the medical staff was outstanding and he had already “begun the road to recovery.” McCarney, who turns 60 in July, says he’s excited to be back in the office to continue preparing for his third season with the Mean Green. The Associated Press released it's preseason basketball Top 25 today, and not a sinigle vote was cast for a Sun Belt team in the nation's definitive rankings. No, not a single vote for Middle Tennessee State. Not a one for Tony Mitchell and North Texas. Media darlings Western Kentucky couldn't score any love [and how could you not love this guy?] read more: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/fau-owls/fau-blog/sfl-no-love-for-sun-belt-in-ap-basketball-poll-20121026,0,2051340.story
