Had we stayed in the MVC, North Texas would have likely been a charter member in CUSA. But Hayden Fry was a very good salesman . He convinced most NT fans, certainly me, that with a slight push, North Texas would be asked to join the then Southwest Conference. We all wanted to believe. The "Norte Dame of the South" he said we would be. I think most decision makers at the time believed what he said, but in retrospect, the move to independent probably did more to hurt North Texas than anything else. I want North Texas to go to a bowl. And any bowl is OK with me. But a trip to Hawaii is a big deal for anyone. It takes a lot of planning and a bunch of money. If I ever get back to Hawaii, I need it to be on my terms at a time that fits in with my work schedule. If we win out, a difficult task to be sure, Coach MaC is 18-18 in his time at North Texas. After 4 seasons, Hayden Fry, whom most consider the gold standard of North Texas football, was 20-21 (granted, we only played 11 games per season then). With a 9-3 season and a bowl win, Coach MaC has a winning overall record after 3 seasons. How far back does one have to look to beat that ? But for now, ... Beat Southern Miss. Then beat the rest. The loss at Tulane hurt us in several ways. A win there and we'd need only one more win to be bowl eligible (5-2). We 'd be leading the CUSA west now.
