11:21 PM CST on Sunday, December 3, 2006 By Brett Vito/Staff Writer Miami quarterbacks coach Todd Berry confirmed on Sunday that he has contacted North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal to express interest in the school's opening for a head coach. Berry was the head coach at Illinois State from 1996-99 and Army from 2000-03. He spent two seasons as Louisiana-Monroe's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2004-05 before joining the staff at Miami. Hurricanes head coach Larry Coker was fired on Nov. 24. "I initiated some contact with Rick Villarreal about the job," Berry said. "It's the best job in the Sun Belt Conference. You need two things to have success: a recruiting base and a university that you can sell to recruits. North Texas has both. It is an excellent university and is close to some of the best high school players in the country in the Dallas area. That gives you a chance to win." UNT is looking for a replacement for former head coach Darrell Dickey, who was fired on Nov. 8 during his ninth season at the school. Berry said he talked to Villarreal once and tried to set up a meeting while he was in Dallas recruiting recently. Berry said scheduling conflicts prevented him from meeting with Villarreal. Berry said he has yet to hear from Villarreal since their initial conversation. Berry is one of several college assistant coaches who have either expressed interest in UNT's opening or been mentioned in connection with the job. Georgia Tech running backs coach Curtis Modkins has expressed interest. South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix talked with Villarreal about the job but has since pulled out of the running. Southlake Carroll head coach and former UNT offensive coordinator Todd Dodge said he would talk with UNT officials about the job after the Dragons’ season that was extended another week on Saturday with a win over Odessa Permian. Carroll will play Colleyville Heritage on Saturday in the Class 5A Division I state quarterfinals. UNT could be looking for a head coach to bring some life to its offense that has struggled the last two seasons. Berry was a quarterback at Tulsa from 1979-80 and has spent most of his career coaching on the offensive side of the ball. Berry coached Miami quarterback Kyle Wright, who ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an average of 183.9 passing yards a game. He also coached one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Sun Belt Conference history at ULM in Steven Jyles. Berry turned around a struggling program at Illinois State that had won more than five games in a season just once in the previous 10 years before his arrival, guiding the Redbirds to the 1999 Gateway title, the Division I-AA semifinals and an 11-3 record. Berry, who finished 24-24 at Illinois State, was unable to replicate the success he enjoyed late in his tenure with the Redbirds at Army, where he finished with a 5-35 record in just over three seasons. Berry has been known for running a wide-open offense throughout his career that also included stints as an offensive coordinator at East Carolina (1992-95), Southeast Missouri State (1991) and Tennessee-Martin (1986-88).

their point was that they out-recruited us IN THE METROPLEX.....they added that the only starter we had from the metroplex was Johnny Quinn, from Mesquite......obviously, we should dominate whatever recruiting happens in the Metroplex when it comes to the Sunbelt!

I saw Dave on TV this past weekend calling the Big 10 game....Michigan - Northwestern, I believe

Actually, one or more games were played there later....I know we played Lamar one year, due to Registration in the Coliseum.....and that was a Southland Conf game, so it had to be in the early 80's? I seem to recall that for a few years there was a conflict with Registration and we played one game in the old Pit per year... I also attended games as a kid and recall screaming at the top of my lungs, unable to hear myself.......and it was decided that the decibel level in that barn could harm your hearing

Tired of the negativity already, lets play a game

he made an incredible leaping catch on 4th down and long at Stephen F. Austin.....we later kicked a field goal to tie the game 33-33 and won the Southland and a 1-AA playoff berth....this was in 1994....that was a great game Hut Allred (great football name) -

"...Peculiar quarterback Carson Coffman..." who wants a "peculiar" quarterback?

it's not too surprising that a female DJ on KLUV wouldn't know the answer.....

I agree that UNO is not the worst team in the West.....that opinion is just based on pre-season polls, etc. UNO is a very solid team. However I think we are a better team and it was a disappointing loss for us. Especially since we could be 4-0 right now. In the SBC any team can beat any other team on any given night (just like Pete Rozelle's NFL)

BEST football - 1. Fry (best all-time coach at 3 D-1 schools) 2. Mitchell (great recruiter, probably as good as Fry) 3. Nelson (great job, bad circumstances (1-AA)) 4. Dickey (not the best, but pretty good job, though he hates the fans) basketball - 1. Blakeley (the best at coaching, recruiting, national publicity, etc) 2. Spika (those were some entertaining teams) 3. Jones (we don't have much legacy, and he's pretty good) WORST football Rust, Parker (Uncle Festus), Tyler basketball Tommy Effing Newman, who told my Frat in a meeting that "we at NT" were "not interested" in a player like Spud Webb, or "the kind of game" he played......at least he was honest, albeit an idiot!!!

I won't take the time to list them, but we ALL know examples of the underdog accomplishing the impossible....I don't think we are "mistaking" for having a positive attitude......on the contrary, your negative attitude is self-defeating.... If you ask, I will provide dozens of "impossible" outcomes of sporting events.....it CAN happen......but probably will not..........GO MEAN GREEN!!!!!!!!!!

the SBC is actually a pretty good conference for hoops

I guess the talent on the field was faster than they are used to seeing....
-
they played for David Byrne's (Talking Heads) wedding......he used them in his movie True Stories for a marching polka band parade scene (gotta see it to get it) and became a fan.....

giving up 54 in back-to-back games will actually be an accomplishment!
-
he is in Galesburg, which is his home town.....head JV coach for now, he'll soon take over the varsity

I hate to throw gasoline on this bonfire, but what the heck, since the (recent) subject is recruiting....... One of my best friends (a UNT alum) was, through spring of 2004, head football coach at Arlington Grace Prep HS...he has since moved to Illinois. But while coach at Grace, he had several players he thought could play for the Mean Green. He always called the athletic dept. when he had a possible recruit for us. The last one he called them about was a smallish RB who he thought would be a star for the Mean Green. But he never even recieved a return call. That player's name is Justin Forsett (sp?).....he now splits time at RB for the UCal Bears, and he's damn good. I know at least one other player my friend called UNT about, when he was at Tyler St. Christian in Dallas -- Jacoby Reinhart, who ended up at SMU, and then the Cardinals of the NFL......once again, no return call. There were different people in charge then, I should add, but it frustrated my buddy to no end watching Coby start at SMU as a freshman, become a star, then go to the NFL. After Forsett, he said he'd never call them again and griped that even an alum can't get a return call. He knows I'm a life-long fan, so he asked me what's the deal? The only answer I could come up with was that we are deep at RB. I guess the point is that, like Rick pointed out, we seem to miss on OBVIOUS recruiting opportunities. I wonder every year if there aren't a COUPLE of players from Denton that couldn't play for UNT, not the studs, but the overlooked FOOTBALL PLAYER type guys......seems it would help attendance to get some locals....not to mention the hundreds from the Dallas area. 3 years ago I thought we had the recruiting thing down, I loved what was happening....now I am not so sure....

A University of Iowa law professor said the school is promoting homophobia and will challenge whether Iowa is violating NCAA rules by painting a visitors' locker room pink," reports Des Moines's KCCI-TV: Erin Buzuvis moved to Iowa from Boston in the fall and discovered the visiting team's locker room at Kinnick Stadium was pink--something she said promotes sexism and homophobia. . . . The color was introduced decades ago by former Hawkeye coach Hayden Fry to soften opponents. But recent stadium renovations added more pink items to the locker room, including lockers, sinks and urinals.

Move all Men's BB games to "Snake Pit"
dentUNiTe replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Basketball
a few observations.... During the heyday of "The Snake Pit", I was a youngster and went to every game. I remember distinctly that I could yell as loud as I possibly could at times, but could not hear myself. The stories we oldsters tell about this are TRUE. That place was unbelievable. But the truth is, we were not a very good team. It seems that we would lose by 30 to Louisville or Cincinnatti or Memphis at their place, and lose by 1 or 2 points at home. We were in a tough/great conference, and we were very tough at home, but really never competitive in the Missouri Valley. My father loved to tell the story of how Oscar Robertson came down with a rebound swinging his elbows, somehow a foul was called on a North Texas player, and the big O sank 2 free throws to beat us....and they (Cincy) were #1 at the time. Also, remember the early 80's? We actually scheduled one game per year at the old "Pit" for awhile. I think it was because we held registration in the Coliseum at the same time there was a game scheduled. I remember sitting there at courtside contemplating pulling the leg hair of a Lamar Cardinal who was inbounding a pass. It was a joke, but we did it. I think we stopped when the Southland officials or AD's demanded we stop. More stories upon request............ -
the Sun Belt was the #12 conference (out of 32) in the RPI rankings in the DMN the other day. That puts it in the top third (just about).

well, let's examine this -- we didn't guard the inbounds pass against WKY and lost! and New Orleans didn't guard the inbounds pass against us and lost!! So it is obvious to any observer that you SHOULD guard the inbounds pass!!! don't give me any crap about different circumstances, I'm old and all I can see are results!!! just kidding

no, the game isn't on TV
