  1. ---All are enforcable except #4 and #5. Those two are a bit wacky anyway... We could play our games at Sanger HS and immediately satisfy those requirements. More reasonable would be to that every member attempt to raise attendence and season ticket holders. Obviously the team or two that are near the bottom of the standings will have trouble doing that since they will be winning few games.. (unless they move to a local small high school stadium, then no problem). It would easier to meet those for the places with tiny stadiums and would actually be more difficult for those who are trying to enlarge stadiums.
  2. Nothing like a very intellectual school song..!! Well maybe it is for them. No wonder they don't go to their football games ..if they have to endure that. I see the next one down on the list (of U-tube) is "In the good Ol Summertime"... also known as the Baylor school song...LOL.
  3. ---I am surprized that practice is closed this early in fall practice... I would expect it the final two weeks when they are preparing for a certain opponent but not now. I doubt that this will happen in future years when teams have a "clue" as to what to expect from Dodge and UNT. This year they have no idea what he will bring and he is keeping it that way. Not a bad idea really because opponents have the time to check us out and plan at this point. We have both a first and second opponent that are not all that far away from Denton which could think about what to do when playing us if they had any idea of what we might be doing. . I support it, at least this year....keep them in the dark.
  4. -- I think it will result in teams having two kickers ... a guy with a cannon for leg to do kickoffs and another who is more accurate to do the extra-points and field goals. I will also result in teams recruiting people to do kickoffs (the Dante-Hall types) and not just being an every play player. I don't see this benefiting anyone especially.. just make kickoffs more interesting instead of just starting the game at the 20. Teams will have to devote more time to coaching the kicking team on how to stop the return people plus it may change who is on the field because this will now become a larger part of the game. ---The biggest change will be the amount of time coaches will spend working with kicking teams.
  5. I would print the pony up-side down as if dead.. If that is as close to the present green we could get.. then I would go with the old darker green. Green is green ... who really cares what shade unless it looks aqua.
  6. When North Texas was member of the Missouri Valley... we were considered the absolute toughest place to play basketball in the "Old SNAKE PIT". The crowd was up close to the action and extremely loud and very vocal. We had a lot of top-10 teams coming in.. Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, Bradley, Wichita and some others that were top-10 teams in that era. We were well known for our rambunctious behavior. It was so crazy then that you had to get there very early if you wanted a seat... especially on week-nites..not so much on weekends with so many leaving campus.
  7. --One minor problem.... convincing the women to do it.....LOL ---It would improve attendence (among males) although the female fans might drop in numbers. ---Well if we have to drop the "tortilla thing", ok BUT we should remember to bring them if we ever play TxTech again... (green ones) and remind them of why we throw them. ( our comeback) I am sure they would appreciate it. Most traditions are not really scripted but just happen and then continue. I still love the Bevo name.... it resulted after the Aggies branded the steer 13-0 and the UT folks altered the brand to spell BEVO... and continued to use him... Burnt Orange... also an accident... it was once bright orange but the uniforms when washed faded or whatever and turned out to be this strange copper color so they just swallowed their pride and kept the uniforms and the color. The Aggie traditions occured just because the campus was filled with insane classless males for years.....LOL.... SMU... they have extremely high tuition to keep the riff-raff out and have become the ignorant cheating snobs of the world...... I think graduating there has more to do with how much money you might contribute than how smart you are or how much you learn. I met some who were really clueless ...(mean) ..LOL
  8. September 1988 in Lubbock Texas........Now known as the tortilla game.... NT 29 -- TT 24 Wife is a Tech grad...all my kids were with us... Two later graduated from NT, none from Tech... one Aggie (who now attends NT games with his brother. . )
  9. --- A LITTLE.??? That is the understatement of the year..!! Maybe he thought they were ranking all-time cheaters. Those guys on Mockingbird don't live in the real world.--- "They're so vain, they think the world is about them". (song)
  10. --I would toss the entire Big-X into that collection before I would put the entire Pac-10 in.... Army and Navy are just different cats to start with.... they really are not regional teams and develop their athletic programs completely differently. The Eastern/Midwestern schools seem to look down on the rest of the world as being "Country Bumpkins" and not worthy of expressing opinions. The four California programs (USC, UCLA, Cal-Berkley, Stanford) are very little better. When we defeat them they often then claim...."Oh well we are academic schools, not athletic diploma mills!". I never understand how some here could ever support those guys against a Texas/Southwest team (except SMU).. ---Glad to see them slow down the I-A growth down.... The next growth will likely come as conferences restructure some. What can possibly do about division III, they have to play somewhere... split it??? ---From: a long-time Texas family---
  11. It doesn't matter what they think of you before the season (or game)... what matters is what they think after the season (or game) and what is on the scoreboards.....in fact I rather hope they under-estimate us every game....More fun that way...
  12. --I am beginning to see why very few people goes to SMU games... It appears to be a no-fun group... besides being outside means you might have to sweat a little and heaven knows that is so "red-neckish".
  13. It might be possible that we use two kickers... one who can get a lot of distance and height for kick-offs but not be so accurate on extra-point kicks and another for extra-points and normal distance field goals.
  14. Chatman and Cobbs are two very different backs.... Chatmond is listed at 5'8" and 245 (goal-line guy??) and has not much history of recieving. Patrick would be much quicker and can catch the ball quiet well. l would think Chatman would be playing is very short yardage situations and Patrick would be in in other situations [ when Brown is not on the field]. This is all assuming that there is not someone else on the squad (rookie) that does not move up. Patrick is a lot like Kevin Faulk of NE in my opinion. Go get them Patrick. It helps him also that he is not a trouble maker and that the NFL (Miami) should not have to worry about what he might be doing after 1:00 AM. The NFL is big on that issue now as well. I am guessing that he makes the final traveling roster. Chatman has no stats from last year... where was he.. injured or on the "taxi-squad or just out of football? He spend three years with San Diego and a total of 79 carries and 3 TD's.
  15. --Remember this is the guy that kept leaving game tickets for Elvis where ever he went... He also wore all-black... one of Satan's favorite colors (and DD's too apparently)... and last-- HE CUT BRET FAVRE went he was at Atlanta...brilliant move. .
  16. I am hoping Vizza will be a good "hit man" .......... and hit the receivers often with great success.
  17. The Ol SMU Mare ain't what she used to be !! (with an upside down pony)
  18. It is very difficult to "retire" numbers at the college level or pro level in football. This is especially true since certain numbers imply certain positions. There are only 99 numbers and often more players than that. Basketball and baseball have few problems with doing that due to the smaller squads.
  19. New Orleans Receivers listed on roster (on Yahoo) 88 Ridgeway, Dante WR 6-1 200 ----- 4/18/84 2 Ball State ----caught two passes (for the Jets, only year) 81 Patten, David WR 5-10 190 ---------- 8/19/74 11 Western Carolina ---been around a while for a WR (only one catch last year for Redskins, 22 for Redskins the previous year) 16 Moore, Lance WR 5-9 -177 ------------ 8/31/83 2 Toledo --- caught one pass last year (only year) 17 Meachem, Robert WR 6-0 215 ---------- 9/28/84 R Tennessee --------- #1 draft pick this year 89 Jones, Jamal WR 5-11 205 -------------4/24/81 2 North Carolina A&T ----caught 6 passes last year 19 Henderson, Devery WR 5-11 200------ 3/26/82 4 LSU ------- will make roster -- 32 catches, 745 yards 18 Copper, Terrance WR 6-0 203 --------- 3/12/82 4 East Carolina ----- will make roster, I would think. --- (31 catches 431 yards) 12 Colston, Marques WR 6-4 231 ----------6/5/83 2 Hofstra ------ will make roster (70 catches 1038 yards) --Michael Lewis -----seems to be gone--- he was a return guy who rarely played the WR position. I would give the Mighty Quinn a pretty good chance... with only 4 receivers there who are pretty much cinch players. [ Colston, Copper, Henderson and Meachem ]
  20. ----I have real problems with the violent criminals and those who are guilty of stealing. This posting of a list is an exaggeration somewhat. If every student that had tried pot or were guilty of underage drinking were thrown out of school then the enrolment of every college would be a lot smaller. The deal on Ced Benson was that a person had stolen his TV and learned where it was and then burst in (obviously without permission) and took it back. It was no cheap set because he had been playing minor league baseball in the summer and had signed a rather large signing bonus. He did that 2-3 summers before quiting and devoting his efforts to strictly football. I live in Midland, his hometown. There may be reasons to not like him but he is not a crook...
  21. --Good story.... sounds like a lady that really wants to get along with you... Good luck (been there for 35 years)
  22. - ----two recruits who signed with the Gamecocks last winter and were denied academic entry this summer. ---I have no problem with South Carolina denying admission to these students...BUT.... the above stated they waited until this summer to deny admission... They should have been informed way before then so they could seek another place to go. They apparently allowed these students to think they were going to be football players at South Carolina for MONTHS.... before deciding against them... That is cruel, mean and classless... unless they told the students months ago that admission was unlikely but possible depending upon their spring grades. ----I don't agree with the comment that Spurrier seemed to make either....... Each school can set its own standards of admission and the ability to play sports is not the only one. ---The crack-down on academic standards happened about 1980 after a Creighton basketball sued them on the grounds that he had just been used for his athletic ability and received no education... he was functionally illiterate even after 4 years in school and took unrelated classes leading to no degree just to stay eligible. Things are much better on academic standards than they once were, even if there are still problems. At least there are NCAA minimums with demands that students make progress toward a degree. Schools with extremely high admission standards do have different admission standards for athletes in many cases. Rice and Duke would trouble competing at all if they didn't. They do poorly in football as it is. Athletes may get in high academic places but staying elgible can be often be a problem at these places for these sub-par students. ---It is interesting to compare majors of students that are introduced on TV nowadays compared to what there were when I was in college.... a lot more fluff majors mentioned now than there were then. Not as many engineering, sciences, or business degrees are quoted now. Landry had degree in electrical engineering even a masters in EE. .... (it showed) Jimmy Johnson had a psychology one (it showed too..motivation).
  23. ---As much as I hate to say it --- SMU is a long-shot chance.. Tech lost a lot from from last year's team especially receivers and big play makers. Plus the type of offense that Tech plays lends itself it big wins and surprising losses. When it clicks they can blow anyone out.... when it doesn't they can look terrible. Smu looked a bit better after losing to us and they have a lot of players back. I actually think SMU will be a fair team this year, a lot better than what they appeared to be at Fouts last year.
  24. I have heard about the same.... there is someone (maybe Spurier) than puts them as 25 every year in their first vote so they will show up as getting votes. I suspect some others do about the same thing and don't really belive they are "ranked material".
  25. ---Getting better has a catch-22. Notice the Aggie schedule has a lot of "pussy-cats" that they can beat up on... They mostly want teams with reputations that they think they get easy wins against .... and if after that any team they think they can defeat ..... plus maybe one big name team in the top ten that gets people's attention when they win. ---As we get better, there are a lot of teams that will want to avoid us because they fear losing to a team that is not ranked and we don't have a history of being a big winner. You can bet Baylor and maybe even TCU falls into that group now. They might schedule us anyway and take the risk because of the fans we might bring and because we are close by. ---SMU and Baylor is ikely having no trouble getting people to play to them.... they look like easy wins and have won big in the past [ note TxTech has them on schedule ]. On the flip side they want to play someone they can defeat...... but they (SMU ) likes the fact they it is a home/home series and will fill their stadium and goodness knows they need that plus it associates them with the Big Boys again. ---If we start winning a lot, then there are teams that will want to avoid us... until we get good enough to be ranked then things could change again.
