No On Campus Stadium For Memphis
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
--We have the worst stadium of any D-I college in Texas. If SMU, TCU and Rice had not been former SWC members that likely would not be the case but they were, so they have better stadiums if not better attendance than we do.. If you compare us the to Mid-majors in general our situation is not quite as bad. --Considering our enrollment (3rd in state, near large population) we should have a better one and ABSOLUTELY should have better attendance than we have (in both football and basketball) . --More students need to show up and show some pride in their university... -
--You are greatly overrating the ACC...or at least what the ACC was like then during the 60's, 50's and early 70's..... The teams were all white and even they came out of the Southeast and rarely played teams that were integrated. True they did often make the final four but Kentucky (also all white) from that area and the SEC made it a lot more often than the ACC. UCLA was dominating the West most of that time and winning many championships. In middle America the MVC (Missouri Valley and Big 8) both integrated were far better conferences. At one time my senior year (65-66) The top 10 [they did not ratemore than 10 then contained 5 MVC teams, Texas Western (UTEP which won it all ) and UCLA and three other ones, likely Kentucky (which lost to UTEP) probably one ACC team, and someone else (Kansas?). These MVC teams all made the final four during that era. Cincinnatti (won it all twice before UCLA started its run) Lousiville, Bradley, Wichita State, Drake, and Memphis... and maybe some other ones made the final four . We were a member of the MVC and there was was great basketball teams coming to Denton. If you doubt me look at who the best NBA players were then and where they came from.... not the ACC... They did become famous for starting their post-season tournament..... no one else had one. Unfortunate for the MVC they alwasy played UCLA as the semi-final game and could not get to the finals without defeating UCLA ..well not until 1973. One of the reason UCLA dominated so much was they were integrated and were raiding the Southeast and which had all white teams plus the inner cities some. --- may not sound like it but I am white. No one will ever do again what UCLA did becasuse the world has changed. By 1972 most of the schools in South had integrated and was taking a lot of the local talent.. ---WKU has made the NCAA 4 times this decade and this is their 20th appearance in the Madness. They should be seeded high enough to actually stand a chance to win.. The 10-12 seeds often win as they tend to be under-rated because they often don't represent a "major" conference and sneak up up on folks. ---I appears that the Belt will get two teams in the Madness this year, both pretty good. Likely the WAC, MAC, and CUSA will only have one. South Alabama is now hoping that there there are not many big upsets in the "minor" conferences or that low ranked in "major" ones don't win their championship. That could use up the available spots and put them out.

The WAC, MAC and CUSA are listed at one team... The Belt with two.

---Had forgottten about DeBerg.( not so good QB ) ... and I am not claiming Young was equal to Montana or even one of the best. I just stated that Young took some of the same players (including Rice, now older) and won a Super Bowl. The Niner's did not win just because they had Montana. Young had done rather poorly until he signed with the Niners but did well in SF with that team. In my opinion Montana is an elite QB but just not the best. I never thought he had the leadership or charisma that many of the others had... he had basicly dropped from sight after his career was over unlike most of the others are still involved in the NFL or in success businesses (Staubach, Elway). ---The Johnson/Switzer thing is completely different. Johnson "constructed" the team and Switzer just "collected" on the results of his work. Montana was on the field and his performance was replaced by another who also won. Young did not win just because Montana had once been there. Switzer won because of Johnson's efforts, Young didn't win because of Montana's efforts .

---You are saying what I have been saying.... get students interested and to the games (especially basketball) .... and proud of their university. It should be easier to improve future attendence and interest by Keying on "present students" than those who attended years ago.... but don't completely ignor those people either. One of the odd but good things NT does (at least to me) is that I get a birthday card every year from them... It makes you feel like you are at least connected to NT somewhat and not completely forgotten. ... I realize it is a quiet reminder to contribute but at least it is not so obvious. Meanwhile "Tech" (my wife is an alum) doesn't do this, in fact nothing similiar.

Some one that is being forced to change their name ought to rename their mascot the "Jack-Asses". After all, the mule is the hardest working animal in American history. They are a very honorable animals, just stubborn about being told what to do.... which isn't all bad either. A lot of people would be better off if they actually were more independent and thought for themselves like mules (Jack-asses) do. ----One political party uses them as a symbol-- There should be no objection.... Army (Military Academy) uses one as a mascot.

--Ie. Mentally he is still gone... LOL

---Considering each team has about 60 players including practice players each year and there are only 99 numbers [ 101 if 0 and 00 were allowed ]....There just is no way to retire numbers without going to three digits number. 22 for the cowboys has been used by "Bullet" Bob Hayes, Emmitt Smith and some other.. Likely the best a team can do is retire the number for a short period [ 5-10 years] until it is needed again. ---Besides Bruce is not exactly some rookie either ... He is #6 on the all-time NFL reception list, Rice is first. Only Marvin Harrison among active players has more. Bruce is #3 on the total yardage reception list ---- behind Rice and Tim Brown....... He has earned to right to wear the number he has always worn. Other soap box..... Bob Hayes belongs in the NFL Hall of Fame. He greatly impacted the game and because of his speed changed the way defense was played and is played today. He may not have had the greatest hands ever but he scored a lot and was the fastest player to ever play in the NFL... after all he won the gold medal for the 100 meter dash at the Olympics. From then on NFL teams sought even faster players. He changed the game.

Personally I liked: "The Red Engines" suggestion... to replace Indians

---Note my screen name... I am an Eagle.... and I too think the Mean Green pertains to football.. especially the defense. And don't care that there are other Eagles in the NCAA. We were Eagles first and were called that for more than 50 years prior to the "Mean Green" name appearing... I am old and like tradition and respecting those who came before us and "fought" as Eagles.. . also fooey on Eppy.. (or whatever that thing was)... or that newer parrot thing either... Go Scrappy..!! ---I too live 350 miles away (Midland) but still make 1-3 NT games each year.. my kids live in Dallas, 2 are grads of NT..... Also we were likely on Campus at the same time. ( me 64-66...also early 70's in summers) I lived in the brand-new College Inn, I was "a Charter Resident".

---Similiar thing happened here ...a man broke into a house found the owner home, beat him up and put him in the hospital.... The man was supposed to work the elections this week. I was called to be his replacement (I have no Tuesday classes) ...... long extremely busy day ... I was there 16 hours, never left, rarely sat down, a friendly voter I knew brought me a hamburger about 3:00 PM. The man is ok but now in rehab. I don't know if they caught the crook.

---I was thinking the same about Tarkington (even thought about mentioning him) .. very determined, rather short, great scrambler, and known for doing what Favre often did... odd underhanded or sidearmed throws when under pressure from linemen. To me he is also very under-rated but in NFL Hall of Fame. Namath had one super year but not a lot else... he was beat up a lot and had bad knees. Joe-Willie was very good when healthy though. His fame comes from the one year he promised a win over an aging Unitas in the Super Bowl. He won and the AFL gained credibility and it caused the merger. --Guess I am no Bradshaw fan partly because of what happened to Dallas... They first defeated Dallas when the TE (Jackie Smith) dropped the winning TD in the endzone (very easy catch, wide open, I might have caught that one) and won another after a rather bad defensive call against Dallas (Steelers had no penalities that day despite being one of the most penalized teams in the NFL that season). I still think Dallas should have won both of those. Oddly the Steeler had advanced past the Oilers with Earl Campbell in the AFC championship game to the Super Bowl on a very controversial sideline call that cost Houston a TD..

--I just checked... you are right... I am amazed that two McCoys showed up at the same university playing the same position. . I guess I did not have the REAL McCoy.. I had never heard that he did not qualify academically. I never paid attention to his first name and had thought this one was "our" boy. He is listed in the MC program as being at UNT. When I look at the UNT line scores it just says McCoy. JUST SHOOT ME-- --JC players are a odd group compared those that attend 4-year schools.... some were poor academicly (some, but not all get much better after leaving their HS environment), some were overlooked (Spud Webb), some were really young coming out of HS and grow and get much better ( Dennis Rodman was under 6-feet in HS), and some some have an odd history such as being a foreign player and are overlooked or need to go where they can have smaller classes while they get better in English. In any case, often good JC programs could defeat many 4-year universities and have players after two years walk in and start their final two years in D-I's. One NCAA final (Oklahoma vs. Kansas) had THREE former MC players .... two made the NBA.... Mookie Blaylock and Ricky Grace.

I would toss Bradshaw off the list.... He was very successful but Pittsburgh with their Steel Curtain defense (and Joe Green) gets most of the credit with me. He doesn't have great stats, just a lot of wins due to a lot of other team members. Early in his career he did very poorly. He is a flake, and not the best of leaders either. Staubach, not the best skill-wise but when its come to a "never give up attitude" , no one was better. He was also a very smart player and great leader, great role model. Aikman should be on the list, made good decisions, very accurate. Won a lot. Unitas, the absolute best of his era and more like the modern QB than the others then. Might not stand out that much today. Manning.. very smart, a leader, great role model, never quits and never blames others, unlike the rest except the earlier players he usually calls many of his plays. Wins a lot. He will eventually pass most of Favre's record if he stays healthy. No one has prepared any harder for games than he does. Elway is greatly underestimated in my opinion. He was a lot like Staubach, never gave up... He went through two periods of high success. Montana, he was good but when Steve Young took over, nothing changed..they still won... therefore he was not the reason they won. Marino is the hardest one to judge in my opinion. He had great stats, was a good leader, but was not known much for comebacks or great seasons. He was a class guy and good role model... terrible in a situation when he needed to run... that meant defenses could load up on the pass and not expect him to make make first downs by running in tough situations ( one reason they could not win big games ) .... unlike Staubach or Elway and some others did. . . Favre... Loved to watch him play, he was a "big-sixth grader" that played for fun... He had great stats , won a lot, and interesting guy.. one of the toughest QBs ever, not the best on the list. Starr nice guy... on great teams, not an elite QB. Otto Graham.. before my time, doubt that he would succeed well today. Brady.... he wins a lot on Belicheat's team... ask me later... too soon for an opinion, he is good, but is he really that good.? How in the world did he lose this year to the Giants with the receiving corps he had.? He should have found a way to win that one with that much talent.. The previous year.. Peyton and team came from more than 2 TDs behind to defeat him.. Never has he won a Super Bowl by more than 7 points. __________________ My favorite guy is Staubach.... my vote is Manning.....

First Round Sbc Men's Basketball Attendance
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Basketball
The Greeks used that same excuse last year for our playoff game....... They need to do something to get that changed. If they really want to help the image of THEIR university.....SHOW UP.!!!! -
--- Adam McCoy played on last year's Midland College's National Championship basketball team...and on another national championship team the year before.... He has actually now played in 15 consecutive playoff games and walked off the court as a winner in ALL OF THEM. Part II: Midland College won another playoff game again yesterday.. Defeated Collin County in the regional tournament to advance. Got to have that West-Texas attitude... win or kill yourself trying.... unfortunately their next opponent is also a West Texas team, South Plains from Levelland/Lubbock, they defeated Weatherford JC which was the champion of the Northern Texas Conference. --I think the last Midland College home game had over 4000 people attend......That was a Junior College with 6000 students.... UNT needs to do better.

That might depend on how many many beers you have before the game ..!!!!

March is "The GREAT NOTHING" in terms of football... no games, no practice, no Spring training, no recruiting, no NFL drafts, no nothing.... You can only beat dead horses (and dead Mustangs) so much and then then they begin to stink. Let's beat them all in basketball. (and get folks to games)

hahahahahah... I am really concerned about that snowman....LOL Can't take life too serious.... although none of us get out of it alive.

--Banned topics.... where did the snowman topic go... did it just melt away?? This is not football season and our minds tend to wonder around a bit to find something different to talk about besides the same old territory.
