  1. ---I guess when their name athletes leaves it becomes big news so we hear about them.... ours that leave probably don't make as much news. Obviously the class of 2007 (maybe 2006 actually if they have 5 years to graduate, and I think they do) was pretty bad for us. Also to be considered is that many of ours may have finished all 4 years of eligibility but didn't pick up a degree, that doesn't make the news but counts against us. Better funding means more pressure can be put on student-athletes when they stay in a central athletic dorm to monitor their activities which most BCS schools have... we didn't have much for the class of 2007. BCS colleges also probably take few fewer academic risks when recruiting than we do, our second option recruits may be a lot less talented and their's probably are close in ability so they go with the better risk in most cases.. Apparently UT had a lot of students graduate..... they may have not been a lot of the big name starters but they graduated and helped the program. Maybe we should give a few to honor grads that are lousy athletes but will graduate...LOL.... they might even improve the athletic department image at the same time...and inspire some of the others to do better.
  2. Bad news..... Those had nothing to do with our problems.... but will with our future problems... this was based on those who were supposed graduate in 2007 or earlier.
  3. ---My guess.. we were fairly close "to the line".... and the 2007 class had a lot worse results than the one that was dropped off in the counting of grads.. The ones that graduated in 2007 would have been all DD recruits. Next year we will use the results of the 2008 class and drop off some other class.. Is it going to be any better?? This could last a long time and all of these would have been DD recruits. Like I said the ghost of DD is going to be around awhile. Dodge's recruits will not be scheduled to graduate until 2011, maybe 2012 if they give them 5 years. (except JC transfers). ---Green PI understands it, the BCS programs don't take a lot athletes that are bad "academic" risks plus with more money and a very good athletic dorm (we haven't had one until recently) they could monitor their athletes better. . I don't know how they count those that tranfer but graduate elsewhere or those who leave to go to pro-sports (to me neither should count against a program). Some just decide to drop athletics and some leave for purely academic reasons, different major or whatever. I would not say we are the 4th or 5th tier in athletics though. There are the elite ones ( UT, OU, USC, etc.) the rest of BCS, and then those like us.
  4. Two letters... DD (and his quality of recruits) Their was some accuracy in the color of the uniforms of his final home game.. black... some dark times ahead.
  5. Well that makes sense but how about such games as Tulsa... that was not a big payday and not a lot of help for us beating a "name" school either. We have had a few of those. (LaTech, and, Akron, was no big deal either)
  6. I guess they recruit crooks that can somehow pass classes...LOL This is about staying in school and making progress and graduating...not court appearances.
  7. HMMMM-- I wonder if his ego would like a football stadium named after him???
  8. ---Sorry... life is tough !... that is what we get for keeping him so long... Each US President inherits the problems of the past President even though he did not cause them. [ Iraq war for example ] Sometimes the people that walk into my classroom have a poor backgound and I am not to blame for that either.... but I have to make the best of it and do what I can. It happens all the time... if you inherit a house in bad condition, too bad,... it is yours to fix. ---Even worse, the guy down the street inherited $10,000,000, I didn't.... not my fault that my father didn't earn that much. Life just isn't always completely fair, you just have to start from where you are and make the best of what you are dealt and do better in the future. We accepted DD's wins and bowl appearances and they had a long term price. .
  9. READ CLOSELY: ----at the end of the 2007 school year and the three prior years.... This has NOTHING to to with DODGE .. he was not here at all except during spring training last year.. ---You are correct about next year, it likely will be no better, maybe worse.... Those also will be ALL DD recruits.... Dodge's only responsibibly will be those DD recruits that should have graduated this spring and were still here when he became coach. Many of those that will count in next years evaluation , never even met Dodge.. they were gone before he came to NT. That is why I stated the ghost of DD will be around for several more years. It will be 2012 before Dodge's recruits count in the evaluation but in the meantime he can help the cause some by keeping DD recruits in school as bad as they could be ... that is all he can do..
  10. --It does to me.... it encourages universities to give scholarships to people who want an education... and not to people who could care less about education and just want to play games and have a good time.. !! Very few of those who flunked out or left gave a hoot about a degree anyway. Give them to people who care and want to be a success in life... and this will not happen. The following did not lose any schlorships: TCU, SMU, TTU, UT, Baylor, or A&M. It is all about who you recruit... DD did a poor job of getting good athletes and students as well. ... Blame him... he is one that deserves ALL the blame..... not the system.
  11. NOTE: -----This says --the result of as a FOUR YEAR look at graduation rates..... ie. ALL of these point back to our former coach DD, not Dodge. This involved the guys recruited by DD not the ones that Dodge has brought in. The only thing that could be possibly put on Dodge is in the future for not keeping some those in school and that is going to be a pretty thin argument. . The ghost of DD is going to be around awhile longer as we still have a lot of his recruits on campus or at least they should be... This apparently does not even take in consideration the would seniors this year because they have not finished the year yet and it states ending in 2006-07. --- Better to recruit good athletes that are decent students than super athletes that are lousy students and cause trouble. This COMPLETELY rests on the recruiting and efforts of DD to keep them in class plus the quality of student-athletes he brought in. --- I also believe that recruiting good students will also help gain more support from profs across campus. The reason some profs have little respect for the athletic dept. is because of the type students some of the coaches are recruiting. I know it makes a difference with me when I see good students or at least students that will work hard in class from the athletic dept. I had several last fall where I teach (none this spring).
  12. --I hate to say it , but is that a bad thing??? ---remember we allowed more points that just about everyone. I know the defensive coaches were a lot at fault but a new group may have a new attitude. I may not be growling with 3-4 wins but I will not be smiling either. I think you are setting your expectation a bit Lowe...LOL (cheap shot, sorry DL .....LOL ....... you need to visit us this year.. you would really fit in with all the Dust in West Texas this year ... almost 0.5 in. of rain since Christmas )
  13. Texas State---[southwest Texas] which has as long history of competiton with us, just not recently much ( 39 games, last ones in 1984-1994). They are very large (over 27,000 ) and are wanting to make the jump to I-A which likely will eventually happen. It is in driving distance for many fans to attend and it has a large student body so travel either way would contribute a lot of fans. They might agree to a 2 for 1 deal.
  14. After reading that one about the WAC especially...I might get away with claiming this: It could be said that a lot of schools may become islands after the the global warming raises the oceans a few feet and Florida Atlantic becomes part of the Atlantic as well as many more universities. . I might be a bit extreme but you never know.
  15. Currently posted on Wikipedia... I guess it is correct. The term bowl eligible refers to any NCAA football team that is able to play in one of the 34 bowl games that are a part of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly Division I-A) season. In order to be bowl eligible, a team must have at least six wins, including conference and out-of-conference games, and the team must not be on probation. The NCAA allows one victory per season over a Division I FCS (formerly I-AA) team to count toward an FBS team's bowl eligibility, so long as the FCS team has supplied financial aid for football averaging out to at least 56.7 full scholarships (90% of the limit of 63 allowed to FCS schools) over the preceding two years. This prevents teams from scheduling multiple games against FCS teams in an effort to pad their win total. On April 26, 2006, the NCAA announced that they were relaxing the rules for eligibility starting with the 2006 season, particularly in light of the new 12 game college football season. Now, teams with .500 records can qualify for bowl games if their conference has a contract with a bowl game. Also, teams with .500 records (i.e. 6-6) could earn bowl bids if all other FBS teams with winning records have been taken and postseason spots still remain vacant
  16. Other than this thread (football cheerleaders) , which ones weren't somehow UNT football related...?? [ pretty interesting topic though ..LOL ] Dodge at the Ballpark (not football, but UNT Coach) ?... SMU avoiding NT in football again by scheduling SFA.?..... The LSU QB getting kicked out (We play them this fall !!)?... Ut's Benson getting arrested (we played against him in football)?... 3:00 AM and "Necessary Roughness" on TV (filmed at UNT football stadium)... The rest listed on page 1 at the present seem to be obviously NT football. Close should count this time of year.................... Which "Mean Green Sports Topic" would this fit on.... Jobs....? Basketball....? UNT-news....?or maybe... Non-UNT sports.....?? [ is cheerleading a sport?, if so what was their win/loss record this year? ] I guess this just can't be "legally" posted..... too bad.
  17. If that is the case, there will be about nothing to read this time of year... Lighten up this time of the year... you need to be a more liberal thinking person or just be bored. ... either that or check back in August. ...you won't miss much. [maybe just who will not be coming back due to poor grades] Perhaps someone should report on when the grass is mowed near the stadium or practice field and that would be exciting. I notice no protest was lodged on the ASU cheerleader article...LOL.. As "NT80" pointed out, it looks like SMU is avoiding playing NT in FOOTBALL again...by scheduling SFA
  18. ---Lots of starters returning at most places. .... Florida Atlantic seems to have the most.. MTSU and Arky State seemed to have been hit the worst and they still have half of theirs returning. ---This could be good for the conference looking better against outsiders. FAU also has a tough schedule and opens against UT. Lots of big names on the Sunbelt schedules. [or you could say a lot of Sunbelt teams on the schedules of well known teams hoping to collect some wins ] Let's disappoint them.
  19. Arizona State.... the new Baylor. There are swimming suits whose pictures that would be a lot less modest that one. Meanwhile the other 10 cheerleaders (most of them) are removed as well. If a couple of football players did something of questionable taste or even got arrested --- would they disband the entire football team?? Glad this isn't one of those conservative Islamic countries, they would likely be stoned (with rocks, not drugs). Better quality picture than appears on the highly moral and conversative Fox Network site: LOL: http://niplie.blogspot.com/2008/05/arizona...eerleaders.html
  20. ---It is very likely that several of the girls on the other team actually knew her well (same school maybe). Not quite the same--- no financial stake as appears in college or beyond.
  21. ---He has a laundry list of bad behavior. How long before Jerry Jones can sign him??
  22. ---Bill Gates and Warren Buffet "combined".... could not come up with enough money to cash one-half that thing. The world this guy lives in is completely different than the one most of us live in. It is really off-season... no games, no practice, no recruiting, no nothing. Our minds tend to wonder.
  23. Absolutely... ---Most people have no clue what the space race really did and what the real benefits were. They weren't the Moon rocks are even anything even close to it. ---First it forced the development of microchips, integrated circuits etc. because of the need for less weight to send up..... Because of those electronic, computers, calculators, and all sort of medical instruments, and many others items (anything that has digital readouts) developed more quickly than they would have otherwise. Every car is full of "chips" (even in the ABS braking system) plus even refrigerators have chips to regulate them. TVs that once had tubes don't now are are much better and more reliable. (circuits board and chips forced by space exploration caused it sooner).... space exploration caused much cheaper commucation by satelites (including live TV from anywhere) and made cells phones possible earlier. While developing heat shields that forced materials to be developed that became dishes that will not expand and can be used in microwaves... and space-type insulation is now used and even refrigerator walls are much thinner because of these materials. Cars get better milage than they did pre-mircocircuits again because of computers in cars that regulate gas flow and ignition. Anything that is electronic is much cheaper now than in the 1950's (if it even existed then, don't remember I-pods and video games). Whatever we have spent on space exploration has been worth every penny.... because of the new and improved products that came from it. This was all caused by a government/military program and not so much by private industry created by the marketplace. Again the value of the space program was not the rocks or the bragging rights but the products that resulted because of these programs and the way they were applied to everyone's lives. ---Re: another post (HoustonEagle): He is telling it like it is..... all American cheap oil is completely gone, oil will not be dropping much, and Asia is using more. The cheapest oil out there now in the Middle East and they know it and aren't going to just give it away. There is oil in the Dakotas, Canada, and Alaska, but it will be very expensive to produce. --Might as well get used to it... this is the way the world is now.... --We also have politicians that claim the world isn't warming up either.... they need to get there head out of the sand and face realiity... No one is absolutely sure why it is (our fault or just natural variation--we did not cause or stop those ice ages) but it is. Things just aren't always as people want them to be. A very few degrees will melt a lot ice and cause problems with the weather and the coastlines. The most important invention of the last-half of the 20th century was the microchip.... We all own 100's them and never really think of them because we don't really see them.
  24. ---Sounds like Medieval Europe or Rome where family members were killed in order to take over the throne or just for protection before the other decided to do them in. The moral of this story... "Don't butt heads with a relative"... just get along.
  25. S.D. drafted no receivers and did not acquire any in free agency. They may be signing several after-draft players. Looks rather good for him.
