  1. Some schedules aren't that impressive.... UTEP or So. Miss seems to have the most impressive ones. Nearly all have one game that looks not very challenging. Our non-conf. games matche up with their pretty well in difficulty and better than many .
  2. I wish we would ignor them as they as tried to do to us for years... We don't ned them .... they need us ...and some other local teams to fill their stadium.
  3. . And it appears that the move by SMU and Houston to the BE is becoming less worthwhile..... but perhaps more expensive in travel and changing leagues charges... too bad.. Also if the A&M excells in the SEC then they get to play their Big-12 buddies. Will this mean the better teams from each league will want to schedule the other league less now since they risk playing them again later? If #1 appears in one of these leagues and #2 doesn't ..this puts pressure on NCAA to extablish some type of playoff. .
  4. http://sports.yahoo....of7pYk.8Kc5nYcB The Big 12 and the Southeastern conferences have announced a deal that will pit their football regular-season champions against each other in a New Year's Day bowl game for five years beginning in 2014,
  5. ---No liberal thinking or tolerance by them.... They think you should believe and do as they do reguarding religion and social issues. .....
  6. --- One item not mentioned which changed college football was the explosion of TV channels about 1980 once satellite communications became highly developed.. ESPN and CNN and many other channels soon appeared which changed things from the 1-2 games per weeks to the insane number that exist s now... That created a lot of revenue available to college football. That changed football a lot and increased interest. Wasn't long after that the conference switching began and grew rapidly. . --- The NFL became very popular about 1960 for a similar reason after most people in the mid/late 50's got TV and actually could watch games and the group that started the AFL realized the potential and started it... which spread football all over America [ example; St. Louis was the closest team to Texas until then. ] The Cowboys were created in an vast NFL geographic vacuum [no southern NFL teams then or anything between St. Louis and LA.... plus were in the division with the densely populated market of NY, Philly and Washington.... so... they became America's team because of so much geographic area and their success. . TV then went to all color in mid 60's which made even more enjoyable and then the leagues merged. . ---The last item that changed sports some is the Internet that rapidly grew in the late 90's.... people could keep up with their favorites daily and do things like this board plus even play fantasy sports . All this explains why football sports salaries and income are so insane now compare to what they once were .... Teams are still chasing money and increased status... more than ever.. ---I am old ..but no one in Texas paid much attention to the NFL when I was in school in the 50's and into very early 60's. College football got more attention [but not so much] because UT was being successful and people actually could see or go to college games.. In short ...football especially owes its popularity and success to improved technology as much as anything. Salaries in the NFL were pretty low even into the 60's.
  7. ---Was not aware that smoking in dorms was prohibited... [ been a while ] I knew buildings in general were but not dorms. At the community college I work at... smoking has been moved rather distant from the door and patio areas. Not really related but my wife hates going to a certain drug store in town because of the same thing .... employees near the front entrance smoking. Personally I have no clue why people in the present world with all the info out there would smoke.... That is one thing for the good that has happened... lots of kids smoked when I was in college .... but on the flip side not once did I ever see/smell any marijuana at NT until I went back in grad school in '71. the world changes... sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad. ---People's view of the 60's is very warped.... the first half was the Beach-Boy 60's.... the last part...very different...more Easy Rider/Steppenwolf '60s or the image people sometime have.
  8. Does the proposed ban include all dorm rooms... I understand smoke free dorms and even smoke free floors ... but that could be a nightmare to enforce if included.. I support it in all other buildings and maybe just walking on campus.. I don't smoke and hate it ...but this seems a bit radical to disallow it where students actually live and it is not illegal or immoral....they have to live somewhere and dorms are public housing.... prohibition [ alcohol ] didn't work too well either. Liberal/conservative idea....?? Conservatives want you to believe as they do on religious and social matters. Liberals.. not so much... more personal freedom.
  9. Here is the article mentioned.. about Dutton at the state track meet. http://www.mywesttexas.com/sports/article_a220beb0-9cc6-11e1-9176-001a4bcf887a.html
  10. Houston yes.... SMU no ..... not with the respect they have for us.
  11. .. --A good post Kram... Coach's and sports saleries are crazy but as you pointed out... very little of it is from tax dollars. A lot this madness go back to about 1980..... why then..... the space program had gotten to the point that we had good communication satelites and all of a sudden cable TV networks popped up everywhere including 24 hours sports, news, and entertainment and even movie channels... Roger Staubach's highest salery was about was only $250,000 if I remember right and he was rather well paid by NFL standards. Once cable TV and 24 hour media was in place entertainment and sports salaries zoomed up... Now so many people wear sports clothing as well which creats more money for them which was not the case when iI was growing up and even in college years.. There so much money out there now that did not exist before. . Ticket prices are crazy in many places.... but look at the stands... most are very full... so it is hard to argue they are too high... there is a demand and they can sell a lot of them..
  12. My Opinions: 1. SMU academics will be unchanged by the the conference change, good or bad ... unless it is financially ... by increased travel costs etc. taking money away. 2. SMU messed up by joining Big East.... no close opponents, will not increase football attendance, not going to get the attention they think it will, will get killed in basketball, They will regret doing it. 3. May not a massive split in BE but look at it now.... many have left or leaving and it will keep changing... not very stable. Might split football teams off completely or they just wonder away as many have done. SMU could become the new NMSU or Idaho .... no real home in football and nowhere to go. 4. I think the prof is right about one thing for sure ..... they will get less attention in Texas media and Texas in general will care even less about them.... on the flip side ours will go up now. Houston will fare much better than SMU. 5. Playing them is more beneficial for them than us now... they need to fill the stands at a few games since their conference attendance will likely be pitiful. 6. The Big East sure looks a version of CUSA now... a lot of former members. How does that help them any...?? I was never impressed that much by BE football in general anyway. ..
  13. ---What did you pay 4 years ago...??? .. 2 years ago.??? the posting above is right on.... part of the increased food prices are due to weather problems but a lot has to do with corn prices especially meat which is often fed corn prior to slaughter and of course corn inself plus many other agriculture products. Using corn as fuel has changed prices quite a bit..... and even beer.... huh.... ?? Farmers now raise more corn instead of other crops including grain etc. which goes into beer and other things including cereal. So what was your point about the milk and the time.?? Maybe the cows are like OPEC in the 70's. Just raised the price because they thought they were selling it too cheap. .. hahaha.. Where I am in West Texas we had 1/4" rain total in 11 months in 2010- 2011.. ie. not one of the wetest... no way. My ranch-land (that I now lease out) is not that far north of Austin and near Colo. River that feeds Lake Travis ... stock tanks were nearly dry in 2010 and went dry in 2011. ..
  14. Odessa hated him after the book "Friday Night Lights" about Permian came out.... He misled a lot of people about what he was doing and about what he thought. He seemed to want to trash football then more than anything else..
  15. ..$$$ The real difference in admission requirements is the amount of money required in the family banking account. ...$$$
  16. . ---The community college where I work does have areas that smoking is allowed but now well away from doorways and not in buildings anywhere... Those who smoke have no idea how much it bothers some people...(I have asthma) One of son's friends had a father that smoked and I could tell when the kid was in our house.... his clothes smelled that bad and he did not even smoke. I dislike it but if smoking areas are not near doors... then I have little problem with it. It will be nearly impossible to enforce a total ban... I had an uncle die at 63 of emphysema who smoked a lot.... his sisters and father ( none smoked ) made it until their mid 80's or 90's. It likely cost him 20-30 years of life.... plus he was miserable his last few years . .
  17. I agree.. this is a really dumb argument.... I really doubt your 99 cent price.... but I did work in a grocery store while in college and I know that we did sometimes sell milk, bread, coffee, sugar and few other items at a loss since people really look at those items when deciding where to shop... the theory was it brought people into the store and we made the profit on other things. Two... We are in a serious drought now... I can water my yard two hours a week.... dairies depend on buying a lot of hay and other types of feed that takes water to grow.. .... and the cost of hay is insane now. That drives the price of beef and dairy products up. THINK...... and you might understand... no doubt milk is higher now but there are logical non-political reasons as you are implying is the cause since you bring up three years......[ why three years if not political? ] Good grief... you went to college... THINK... [ my family also raises cattle, I have a clue about what I am talking about ]
  18. I like making fun of his ignorance... and smu arrogance... he isn't winning at all and looks even more foolish. ....hahaha .. he likely doesn't even understand how nutty he appears.
  19. You really don''t get it... SMU wasn't playing anyone in part of the 80's... They were suspended for cheating... and before that since they were cheating, the results are meaningless. I realize Centenary doesn't play football now ...... the point was games that occurred many decades ago are now meaningless when evaluating a program now.. You just don't understand.... the point of anything I said. ... It was pretty obvious what I meant ..... Wow... And no... North Texas was never "dying to be in a conference with SMU".... we just wanted to be in a more recognized conference and whether SMU was there are not ... meant nothing,. It is not all about you as you picture things... [ inflated ego is a big SMU problem, ask anyone from any college... they will just laugh ] At this point I honestly hope we never schedule SMU again.. they need us for attendance...... we don't need them. SMU DOESN"T PLAY SOUTHLAND TEAMS ???? ... go look ....smu has played Sam Houston, S.F Austin (won by 8) and NW Louisiana, and TexState in the past 5 years..... in fact smu played mighty NW La. last year. ----what a memory---- but you want to remember games from the 20's and 30's.!! .. Since 1994.. UNT has played one Southland team, unlike SMU which schedules them regularly.
  20. ---I am sure it is Obama's fault...hahaha.... You listen to Fox and the Fox-Street-Journal too much ( Murdock owns it too). [ hint milk has been not that cheap in years unless you were buying milk that was going out of date in a couple of hours........ and if you really check... gasoline is cheaper now that in the summer of 2008 also... just not cheaper than it after the economic meltdown that fall [ before the elections ] when we were bailing out banks, about to bail out car-companies, repo-ing houses left and right, and the DOW was dropping like a rock. ..
  21. .. HAHAHAHA... almost all those games were before 1940 We would have to be over 80 yr old to even remember them. I See SMU has a losing record again East Texas State (aka East Texas A&M ) and Centenary ..... No wonder they don't schedule them anymore... they fear them. ... Cowards.. play them.. In the past 30 years we are 2-5 against Smu.. , not great, but not cheating and kicked out of the NCAA like the other one was for part that 30 years. [ if you want to discuss pre-WWII games ..then also you should DISCUSS THE SMU GAMES OF THE 80's ... especially the later 80's.. ]. .... The current record is nothing like the record you are quoting. I suppose if you are 90+ you might remember some of those pre WWII games. ..
  22. Would NMSU be better than MTSU ??? ..would bump Tulane to the East I suppose.. What does UTEP think of them???
  23. NMSU should have stayed in the Belt.. ... and all of those here that wanted us to go to the WAC.... well it would have terrible for us.
  24. ---You may be on to something..... anytime we lose by 30 [ except a body bag game to LSU etc. ] .... the team should be made to wear pink jerseys in their next game....hahaha.... they would likely try harder when the game seemed hopeless just to avoid that happening.
