  1. It was in the Thursday "Midland Reporter Telegram" (Newspaper) for the whole world to read. The website is operated by that newspaper. If nothing else (true or not) the player is a total idiot. [note: don't recruit idiots even if they are "talented", recruit smart kids with character ] I am in Midland but on Midland High side of town..... ???? What happened the post I put up yesterday, objection to the word idiot ???
  2. Basketball is not the only use.... it is barely large enough for Graduation. Maybe "Sports Guy" did not graduate. Enrollment is more than double than in the 60's and attendence was often 4000+ then..... agree-- attendence is way too small now..... of course there where no bars and clubs in town to hang out at like now... wasn't much else to do and TV only had a few channels.and no DVDs etc.
  3. Bad seasons sometime indicate an opportunity to play almost immediately. Many bad seasons probably mean a bad, frustrating place. We aren't those guys.
  4. ie. a Harold Carmicheal type.. who just runs the along (slowly)the endline and catches balls that no one else can even reach. ... Now if we can actually get close to the endzone or have a QB that can throw that high (or accurate).
  5. Bush made that a part of his speech about that last night... Ain't a'gonna happen... LOL , no human clones. Me--- Oline or LB.
  6. ---The topic is getting drafted...... not all-NFL. I still say it could happen if someone has a need for RB that can play special teams and can catch the the short pass. After that how he does is up to him and the circumstances that he gets placed in. He has more value than as a typical RB and it is likely someone that scouted the Hula bowl noticed. ---You never really know-- Clarette (jerk) thought he was cinch NFL star and could not make any team... While Samsun Gato was not a star at a lower college level and did pretty well last year in the NFL. A lot has to do with the opportunities that occur and luck, as well as talent.
  7. ---I absolutely understand.... One thing that makes the NFL so interesting is the diversity of players. There are the powerful onces such as Earl Campbell and Bettis that have just run over people and there are the small scatbacks that just seem to find holes and get away from people and there are the speedsters and fast accelleraters such as Dorsett that if he got an inch it might be a mile.... The oddest of the bunch might be Emmitt Smith who wasn't extremely fast or big... but was able to find holes and was tough as boot and could actually catch pretty well which many backs can't do. I am not saying Cobb will be a great success but with a little luck and at the right place he could do very well. Note the list posted above ... there have been a lot other rather small backs, not just a few..... I just used a couple of well known names. ___________ ---The greatest example of a underestimated small guy was a guy I used to watch here in Midland College in basketball... No one gave him a 4-year scholarship out of HS so he went to our junior college, won the JC National Championship, went to NC State and played for the defending NCAA Champ under Valvano and made it to the NBA where he did rather well.... He was the 5'6" Spud Webb. In the first game I saw him play he had several dunks and a goal-tending call which brought the crowd to their feet, laughing.
  8. ---I think his small size is over-emphasized... He may not be able to be an "every-down" back but would fit in well as a third-down back or special teams player that can serve a a running back/receiver in many situations. ----Walter Peyton and Barry Sanders were not all that large and neither is Dante Hall [5'8'. 187] who was a RB at A&M but plays receiver and return guy for KC. --Will he drafted.?....maybe, in late rounds..... by someone needing a return guy and a thrid down RB. His Hula Bowl experience demonstrated his ability as a RB, receiver, return guy and on other special teams.... I think he will stick somewhere.
  9. ---Rice is beating a dead horse..... Their attendence average is double their enrollment. They had a bad year but I doubt they will ever get to respectable numbers because of the lack of alumni or enrollment. I suspect that one of these years they wil realize they can not afford to remain in D-I football or perhaps not in football at all.
  10. ---Which proves almost anything is possible..... The best team doesn't always win, in any sport. Never underestimate your opponent or overestimate your own ability and "never give up",---- strange things happen.
  11. Those are not my EXPECTATIONS but they are my HOPES.
  12. #1 If you mean 4 bowl trips in 5 years....lots ...there are several, don't want to do the research to give names. #2 The problem is how far we fell in one year and the expectations at the beginning of the year.. It was a lot worse than I expected and I was not as unrealistic and posters were. That big of a drop is very disappointing and many games were very frustrating. Acouple of years ago a lot of posters one was trashing the addition of the two Florida teams and now we have a 1-2 record against them..... One no criticises the decision to admit them anymore. ---Not meant as a defense for DD but one year may not mean much.... They wanted to fire Holmgren last year and he barely survived but this year he is in the Super Bowl. Cowher has had some bad ones too but he has made it back as well. - -
  13. That is why noisemakers have been banned by the NCAA....Cowbells or clickers in someones ears are not good for fans a few inches away.
  14. OK-- noise makers are disallowed but key rings can't be ..... Fla St. once had a player Keyes (before the odd Indian thing they do now) and their fans rattled their keys at times.... weird sound.. A few 1000 keys being rattled could make some noise along with the yelling etc. .. a suggestion....may be not a good one.
  15. Usually weekday games have better attendence in Denton ....most students are in town.... weekends they scatter and attendence is lower.
  16. ----I was sitting next to him.... It actually said --"No-body can STUFF our Willie".. The guy tht made it lived on my floor at College Inn and we walked to the game together (several of us). The maker ( Denis ??? last name forgotten at the monment) was actually a Canadian citizen from Alberta. It was in response to a comment Wes Unseld* had made earlier to the national media that week (they were rated in the top 5 ) ... It is obvious that you were there.... you would have never known about that sign.... we sat in a low seat near one of the baskets, the right side as the player saw it.. *future NBA hall of Fame player and NBA coach. I can't believe that act has been remembered about 40 years later by someone not involved in it. We had a little bit of trouble getting it in and part of the time I was one of the people help hold the sign. That kind of stiff was not done much then so I guess is why you remember it.
  17. ---I have no idea what the Old "Snake Pit" (aka Mens Gym) held duing the 60's but it was almost always full on week-nights when we a member of the MVC. The enrollment was then only 13,000. It was not as good on weekend while as so many students went home to Dallas to see Mommy. At that time we were in the conference with a lot of top-ten teams ---Cincinnati, Louisville, Bradley, Drake, Wichita, New Mexico State and Memphis. Everyone of those mentioned named made the NCAA Final-Four in that era except Bradley and they had lost-out to Houston when they they were a power-house with Elvin Hayes. ---My favorite game ever.... when we defeated Cincinnatti at the "Snake Pit" (1965?) who had the National Champion only 2-3 years earler. The new building was refered to as the "Super Pit" for a while ... at least until Blakely left in late 70's. It was never as wild and crazy as the smaller "Snake Pit". ---We were the most hated destination in the MVC because of our crazy crowds. Cokes were sold without ice and lot of them often were thrown (and students thrown out) Cheerleaders often yelled give the ref a big hand after a "questionable" call. The Crowd responded with a "German style salute... ie. one hand" and a yelling. It was crazy and fun and I became a basketball fan... really hadn't been until then. During that era UCLA was the best team but the MVC was the best conference... most ACC, SWC, and SEC teams were still using all-white players until the 70's... The SWC was just plain awful and could never win much if any in the NCAA tournment. ---That may have not been the most courtious thing to do but it was fun and it sure beats small crowds with them sitting on their hands. ---My favorite double player... John Love... a rather short guy that made played BB some and had a short career in the NFL as a receiver/returner for the Redskins He played quite a bit of basketball for NT...but not a BB starter.
  18. maybe ... but on this board the #1 topic at this time should be --who signs or shows up in uniform next year.
  19. Ahhh... Infidels I love the crazy quotes by the crazy Iraqi info minister: However there are a few I am beginning to believe now.. LOL _______________________ Bush "knows that he is standing in quicksand when it comes to his baseless talk on Iraq" "I speak better English than this Bush" ________________________ "an attempt at humor" --- I would post a couple more of them but I KNOW they would be deleted......this might....LOL
  20. I know I have never seen one... .. What are infadels??? LOL
  21. It is nice to have a good recruiting class but real satisfaction come from wins in the fall. Good recruits do not always produce wins...... next comes good coaching, motivation, and good game plans and adjustments.
  22. --- There has been a lot of frustration shown because the level of play dropped tremendously... from four straight bowls to just two wins. To expect another championship and a bowl may have been a stretch but no one expected only two wins , especially when you consider how many games we had scheduled against rather weak competition. Adding to the frustration was we had two running backs that we considered excellent and had been national rushing champs.... so it looked obvious to most that a winning season would occur if not a conference championship. ---That is a bitter pill to swallow to drop that far. Hopefully next year we will do a lot better..... actually anything other than a winning season in the Sunbelt is not going to be satisfying and even with that, many fans and alums will expect more. The Belt is not the Big-12... I have no idea who really deserves the blame for such a drop-off,--- players' ability, players' motivation, coaching, or game plans or whatever.... but great disappointment and frustration is to expected after such a collapse and it is not surprising that many posters have been negative about things. Sure we have problems competing with the Big-12 schools and their Big bucks and established programs BUT the other Sunbelt teams aren't any better off than we are generally plus they are not in states with as much HS football talent as Texas has to recruit . May we do better in the future. ---I really don't understand the North Texas students that wear a lot of "gear" from other universities... especially those in Texas or ones we compete with on the "field" or recruit against. I am glad that UT won [helps the image of football in Texas and perhaps us as well] but I am not so impressed that I wear/buy clothing with their name on it.
  23. ---Change them all to "The Fighting Custers" or if that it is not acceptable then use, "Moonshiners" or "Bootleggers" .. after all, what Indian or other ethnic group could object to that? We have Sooners and Jayhawks which refer to cheaters and outlaws .... so why not? The "Arkansas State Moonshiners" sort of seems appropiate. Another possibility would be "The Fighting Cockroaches" which many people find more desirable than "Spiders" (Richmond) or Rattlers (St. Marys in San Antonio).
  24. --Agree, it wasn't that great... I watched on a split screen TV and would watch when the West had the ball and watch Cobbs. You are right he blocked rather well too, he sure did not hurt his NFL draft chances any. Apparently NFL scouts attend the practices during the week and learn quite a bit as well. ---As is true in many all-star games, it was a lot about individual actions trying to impress and a lot of goofy throws were made. The QBs image in that game pretty much went down and they did not help their "draftability" any.
  25. --I would think it would be no big deal, if they are embarrassed to appear in the magazine, then they weren't required by anyone to pose for it. There have been a few through the years that did not appear, some BYU players I think and perhaps a Baylor player or two..
