The Wussification of America Continues
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to LongJim's topic in Mean Green Football
---Running up the score is very stupid.. it does make the opposing folks mad but the real reason is your own team. I graduated from Brownwood during the the Gordon Wood era (he won 9 state-championships, 7 in Brownwood) and he absolutely did not run up scores. Somes scores were one-sided but because of the effort of the reserves. It helps team morale for reserves to get playing time and they may be needed Later or next year. After all they also practice hard every day and help prepare starters as well. One of the best things occured the following year when it was printed that there were maybe 3-4 starters returning. The truth was that is was often more like 7-8 starters since so many who had not started the previous year were playing at least 1/3 of every game. It also helps your own team immediately since starters who are sitting on the sideline and not risking injury and will be in better shape as the season gets late in the year (especially true in high school which has a playoff system). ---Meanwhile I have known of kids ( not Brownwood) who have quit because they just got tired of never playing which hurt the following year. I have also known of great players being sidelined and not be avalable for playoff games after being injured in games while playing just to pad stats or run up scores. That is really stupid. -
The Wussification of America Continues

The rule has good intentions but has problems. ---I have seen coaches who keep their starters in deep into the 4th quarter and continue to score just because they can. This is the problem the rule is trying to stop and something should be done with coaches that TRY to run up the score even though they have a 40+ points lead. ---On the flip side I have seen games in which the starters never played the second half and every team member has been playing and the score continues to climb even though the plays called are very "conservative". This coach should not be criticized or penalized. I remember Houston defeating Tulsa by 100-6 in 1968. The coach (Yoeman) drew a lot of criticism but he explained he played over 80 players and the other team did agree to attempt to play. There were not much of an effort by Tulsa once the score got out of control. That was the only game some of the bench Houston players had played in all year and they were giving it all they had and scoring even though very basic plays were being called. Tulsa had won the previous year. About the same happened a couple of years ago between OU and A&M and OU won 77-0 and could have been worse.... the interesting item here is that A&M had defeated Baylor 73-10 a month earlier. -
OT: DeLay and Skilling Convicted--NM

---The topic posted was Enron... I only mentioned Enron people and Delay [of Houston also] who was listed in the topic subject. Why mention anything else?? Besides you have complained about people getting being off subject. Apparentlly you think the names mentioned are conservatives and took offense, I did not call them that or name any political party.. ---You would hate Enron and the people who messed it up if you were retired and lost your retirement and health care. I know some in that boat who have. Some are now in serious financial trouble through no fault of their own. ---Your statement: Seems 66 is at it again attacking only conservatives. To me they just look like crooks that took peoples money and ruined people's future. The other guy you mentioned did not seem to ruin peoples lives although he is apparently another crook, but not part of this Enron topic. Besides he is a two-bit crook compared to the BILLIONS taken at Enron. -

---I did not start this thread about Enron. The only person not mentioned by the originator of was Gramm. His wife was on audit commitee of Enron so she signed off on all this mess. As for Delay his name was in the title of thread. ---As for as the William Jefferson (you brought him up) ---shoot him.. I don't give a frap what party they are in... A crook is a crook. I am about honesty in government and doing what is best for the voters in general, not what is best for themselves or their party. ---Actually I want a balanced budget (a conservative idea) which isn't happening lately. Why do you think I am attacking conservatives?. Interesting that you think I hate conservatives... I hate dishonest people. -

To quote the Administration building at University of Texas: "Ye Shall Know the Truth and the Truth Shall Make You Free" Lay didn't tell the truth and now he will not be free.... LOL -

---When Lay, Schilling, and Enron went belly-up a lot of folks lost their retirement and their health care. I am not just talking active employees who have years to recover but people who never worked for Enron but had worked for companies acquired by Enron and are now beyond the age of possibly working any more. The Enron execs. were slime and deserve everything they get and more. ---I wonder if they will eventually go after ex-Sen. Phil Gramm's wife, she was on the board of directors and also the audit committee that kept seeing "no problems". Phil withdrew from his re-election and left the state just as soon as Enron scandel hit the fan. ---Next on the list is another crooked Houstonian... DeLay... whose name accidentally appears in the title of this thread. -
Probably UT figured out who it was and someone pressured him to take it off or someone just paid him off and took the ring..
-
---I am sure they know better... it is another attempt to insult us as being meaningless and not worthy of their attention. That has gone on for years and I expect it to continue, get used to it. We NEED to defeat them and hopefully in a big way.

In their dreams maybe..... one in the past 25 years or so. I think we can exclude Vince, he should have a boatload of money... Maybe he is trying to buy it.

I am sure TCU considered SMU "fluffy" after their win the previous week against well respected Oklahoma..... You never know...... Obviously A&M took SMU seriously after SMU defeated TCU and they stomped SMU 66-8. Usually the bee gets killed by the man but sometimes the bee kills the man. Strange things are possible. Beat UT & SMU !!!!... (unlikely but you never know)

Once they make a visit, they will realize the rafting part is really bad... Have you seen the Rio Grand in El Paso? It is usually a great place to wade and not get your knees wet. I guess you can add another #5: "If you are wanted by the law it is only a few miles across the border and to safety". -
Will Texas Overlook Us Prepping for OSU?

Agree-- I never will cheer for an out of state team to defeat a Texas team unless they are a Sunbelt team or are playing SMU. ----100 % TEXAN -

SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
Amen....especially to #5 and #3. I suppose #5 is a part of #1, plus #2 should happen if #1 occurs. Coaches (and parents) need to set guidelines and learn how to say NO! and follow through with what they say. All these unsportmanlike and other "stupid" penalities are not funny and the player should be pulled immediately in most cases, then run like crazy the following week. Penalties and turnovers are the two most important stats in determining the winner of a game. Re #3: I am not a pass-happy person but you need to call some quick, short ones when the opposition just stacks the line of scrimmage preventing running play from suceeding. It backs them off.. plus you may actually make a lot of yards in those situations. -

SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
They probably will overlook us and it still might not matter even at that. Our only real hope to "get to" their inexperienced QB early or to get some interceptions and get him down on himself. They don't have a QB that has played one down of college football and absolutely none at Royal stadium in front of 100,000 fans. He can be had I would think. -
Racism in High School coach hiring
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to TicketJohn's topic in Mean Green Football
I have known of situation where a District or company was criticized for the lack of minorities and they had hired practically every applicant. Out here every head coach in a school district of the same sport gets the same pay except for a difference years of experience in education. I have no clue what DISD does. W-L record is not the issue in salery here, just in keeping the job. -

Want to comment on the SMU lobbying to keep us out of the the SWC as member #10 after Houston was admitted as #9? The PAC-8 had just gone to 10 members by adding the two Arizona schools and the Big-10 had 10 members. At the time we were doing well in football and basketball with Fry and Blakely and were larger than most SWC members. I have read many interviews through the years in the DMN in which SMU claims they have the only "whatever" program in the area when in fact we often have an older, larger and well recognized dept. Some have even been start-up programs by SMU. Basicly they ignor us and it is insulting!! -
Racism in High School coach hiring

I was complaining about the complainers. It was in big issue in the 50's, 60's and 70's, not much now. Many of the kids I went to HS with (we integrated in the mid 50's) could not attend SWC colleges because of their race or in the case of a kid that sat behind me in HS geometry class, even the local college in my hometown. It wasn't right but things have changed greatly. There is not a lot to complain about any more, maybe about some individuals or odd situations but not in general. A few still think they are victims, and complain, they now bother me because I understand how it once was. Were you in school during the 50's and 60's??? I was, and I went to North Texas which was integrated.. You did not understand the point I was trying to make. Everyone has situations they don't like... rarely is race the issue anymore. I even went a civic meeting this week and it was mentioned about Juneteeneth which is celebrated here with a picnic/parade I think.. A couple of blacks were sitting to the immediate right of me and one stated the NAACP in our town has disolved and he hoped it never appeared again here. He stated it was not needed anymore and wanted everyone treated as Americans not some racial group. I live in a town of 100,000 not a small place. -

Yah racism sometimes exists, sometimes the best just happen to be a lot of any certain group, see NBA.... Txdot offers (or offered for several years) scholarships in engineering if you were one of the following: female, Hispanic, Afro-American, American Indian, Asian-American, or Pacific Islander. I did not see it posted last year but this has been true for several years and still may be true.... In short: everyone but an Anglo male was eligible for this scholarship...which excluded both of my engineering sons when they were in college. So---I had to paid their tuition and fees. Joy-joy!!! Even worse, this scholarship was paid with Texas tax money which I also pay. ....This is an example of racism/sexism and I am not making this up. One of my daughter's friends received one, she was female.. Was this fair???? Don't see many Anglos hired by BET or Hispanic TV either. Racism works in both directions but some don't realize it. Some don't want to admit it but they may have not been the best applicant and racism was not an issue. I can't read the article so I have no idea what it said... just making comments about the subject. -

No big deal, at least they did not say "North Texas State" I still hear people say "Texas University" as well as "Univ. of Texas" also "University of Oklahoma" and "Oklahoma University". Both of them have been around 100+ years and people still don't get them right. -

They also the main reason we were not admittted to the SWC 25 years ago. They voted against our admissiion along with with TCU and Baylor who was believed to have been convinced to to do so by SMU. Had we been admitted then our athletic program and image would be much different today. For years they refuse to even acknowledge we even exist and have claimed they had the only one of various academic programs in the area when we have had well established ones of the same program for years. They constantly insult us in their media interviews. Below means my two favorite teams will play in the NT/SMU game. North Texas and whoever plays SMU...... and both are the same team....... NORTH TEXAS.! -
Maybe he had just been helping his Moma and had been just pulling up weeds in the back yard and did not realize what they were!!! .. Do you have a better defense?? Why else would he allow a policeman to search his car, either that or just plain stupid (he is a student at Texas)... then maybe an insanity claim is in order.

They will play a well recognized "name" team probably from a BCS conference that is likely not having a great year. Ie. not us, not Tech, not UTEP, not Texas, maybe A&M, but probably someone like SMU, Rice, or Baylor or even TCU. They want a win and they want it against someone that has a well-known past. They have an "image" to protect. I would not surprised if they did this to maintain a presence in the area for recruiting purposes. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Cotton Bowl against someone during the State Fair especially if Texas-OU leaves and decides to play home and home as treatened now.
