---Their use of the "NTSU" is typical of SMU attitude, they think everyone elso is so irrevelant that whatever name they use is meaningless. ----Actually most of them too dumb to know better.-----

QUOTE(BlueRaiderPride @ Jul 13 2006, 02:36 AM) Oh, now, now. I would expect ALL North Texas fans to remember the year of that one. Not very often an 0-5 team beats a 5-0 team. 2001, bro. Not 2000. I think he meant at the time of the game UNT was 0-5 and looking bad... MTSU was 5-0, looking great and no one expected UNT to be even close. ... but we won 24-21. We realy took the wind of of their sails.... they finished 8-3 with losses to LSU, Mississippi, and UNT, and they have never forgiven us. They may not be our arch rival but we may be theirs, I can promise you that would love to beat us 50-0. You might note.... he absolutely remembers the year when I typed the wrong one....they haven't forgotten.....and want revenge...big time....LOL -

I can't read, Bush can't talk or pronounce anything...... Guess I was thinking "one score years and a couple of days ago". I had to throw in 1988 since I think it was the beginning of the recovery from the I-AA "slap in the face". I still had nine games listed since I had two tens. But if you need another one-- how about the 2001 Arkansas State game (45-0) in Denton (I was there) that followed the MTSU upset. The ASU game convinced the faithful that the previous week at MTSU was no fluke and started the talk of a possible bowl game for the first time in years. Plus ..just for grims .....1988 is a great year to remember, we went 8-4 with wins over TxTech, Rice, and Texas (unofficailly, refs won that one for UT, not the players) ....and......SMU went 0-0 that year... That was the final year that they were kicked out of the NCAA for being dishonest SNAKES. We all know the beginning of time is all related to SMU, just ask them. -
UT is our first game @ 11am and ON TV!

Agree... but the third Qb in the Tennessee game was Glen Ray who was a Midland High Grad. West Texas boys think they can beat anyone....and he did. Go Phillips (San Angelo) ---beat the Horns. -

1. 2002 Cincinnatti W 24-19 First Bowl in 1/2 century, changed attitude 2. 1999 TxTech W 21-14 Post SWC days, earned in in State recognition, second TxTech win in 3 years, Dykes fired 3. 2003 Baylor W 52-14 Convinced many that UNT has credible program 4. 1988 TxTech W 29-24 First Big win since Fry era (I was there, tortillo game) 5. 1988 Texas L 24-27 They official won but even they knew otherwise The 2ed SWC team in 1988 to have hands full. 6. 2001 MTSU W 24-21 UPSET, started 4 yr. Bowl run, changed attitudes 7. 1997 TxTech W 30-27 Post SWC era, got some Texas attention 8. 2003 Memphis L 27-17 Bowl game, very good team 9 1995 Oregon St. W 30-27 Defeated Pac-10 team in DENTON. First I-A win after going to I-A 10 2000 TxTech L 7-13 Almost won, lost fumble at end. almost gave Leach his first loss at Tech. Tech then really hates and fears us since we had won 3 of previous 4 games. 10B 2002 TCU L 10-16 Should not have lost this, considering how TCU has done since since, this was a big game but a narrow loss. _____________________________________________________ worse game ---Texas 0-65 We looked awful ---even if Texas has gone 24-1 and been National Champion since that game... and had two Heisman finalist. Young and Benson.. -

Your wife is from Baylor ........ right??? Guess you got a bit of revenge for all the beatings you have suffered at home ........ LOL.. Sorry, could not resist...............hahahahaha Get ready to take more beatings in fantasy football this year by the West Texans...... again. -
---This is even worse than I remember. I was listening to a UT radio version and later saw "Highlights?' on TV and newspaper writeups afterwards which were bad enough. Was the then Gov. Clements paying UT refs in Austin as well...??... He had been paying the SMU players in that era and got them kicked out of the NCAA. ( #4 below). http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/lies.html

UNT Hall of Fame Article - DRC/Vito
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
John Love.... he also played basketball some, bench player mostly but caught a zillion passes from Carlin in football. He was able to play in NFL for a year a two, Redskins I think and mostly as a kick returner if I remember correctly. He was rather short guy that could really get high in the air in football and basketball. -
---Agree, like I said Bush is not about Football and he is not really a Texan either, that accent of his is pure Yankee. [nothing political here] Should not be on board. ---Lay a Democrat???... he loaned his jet plane to the Bush campaign during 2000. (True) .....but I don't blame you for wanting to pawn him off on the Democrats, no one wants to claim the benefits they received from him. [title of thread] --- Clinton was President, so "YOU" started the political comments.... I don't blame you for not wanting hear about his successor either, least BC did not get us into a war with a country that had provided no terrorist acts against us (name one act) and soldiers were not dying and the budget was balanced..... You should not fear or avoid truth..........

---Glad to see Vidal Carlin on the list. He was the QB just prior to the Steve Ramsey/Joe Green era and was a good one. I am probably one of very few to see him play since I as old as rocks. North Texas games were interesting then with a lot of passing and was more like the NFL than was the SWC which was run, run, and then pass if needing 7 or more yards. Baylor was the one exception in the SWC. The MVC was a passing league with Tulsa, North Texas, and Lousiville having extreme passing attacks. They fed the NFL a lot of players. ---Unfortunately they played in an era in Texas that was "all about the SWC" and UNT, UTEP, West Texas, Arlington, and Lamar were pretty much ignored by the Texas media. The last three finally faded away in football eventually. We haven't nor has UTEP but we are still struggling to get proper respect. [ thanks to SMU in part and their votes and attitude against us ] Beat Texas, then DESTROY SMU (rats). -
---Yep, Bush should not be mentioned here on a board about Texas sports.. He did not go to college in Texas (Yale) , did not graduate from any High School in Texas (New England preppie) and was not born in Texas (Conn.). Not exactly a Texan or cowboy either (bought his first cow after being elected President and over 50 years old just for image purposes. Beat the Horns...

---Let's not forget those selfish crooks in Austin that hang around that BIG pink granite building on Congress street. .... LOL .... they are far from homeless and not many are hippies, beatniks, kooks. whatever... ---While is Chicago a couple of weeks ago I saw several Texas hats and shirts (half dozen or so, probably visitors)... in fact I saw more of them that I did of their local colleges. Those folks do not wear "college clothing" much. I did not once see a Michigan, Wisconsin or Minnesota shirt or hat and not too many with Illinois or DePaul on them. ---After seeing an earlier thread about spotting NT clothing elsewhere I decided to pay attention to college items while traveling. I saw one Aggie hat and even North Texas once when a person was using a backpack with UNT (the old star) on it. Those guys are not anything like around here where college items are worn year around. Very few were seen. As for pro sports about all I saw on the street was several White Sox shirts and hats, not too many Cubs, and even less Chicago Bears. ---When returning to Midland I probably saw more colleges represented in our local airport than I had seen in Chicago in an entire week....strange. It seems that there is more Michigan stuff worn here than there.

Interesting HS Early Commitments
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to LongJim's topic in Mean Green Football
---Verbal committments are almost meaningless... a local kid had committed to A&M but messed around that fall and they would not sign him.. Some verbals change their minds as well.. The February commentment time is absolutely correct. -
---Band directors will never go for the 20 min half-time especially when both bands show-up and have half-time shows.
-
---Don't bet on that... Texas is a community property state which means what was his is hers....and his wife is still alive.

Without clicking: Could you please answer two questions that me and my roommates have been bickering over... Will the Sun Belt ever establish itself as a legit 1-A conference, and if so, when? Also, who are your top 3 (in order) to win the Sun Belt Conference this year? –Wiley A: No, but that’s not to say a few individual teams can’t rise up and be more of a national player. Boise State wasn’t exactly a Big West powerhouse before 1998 when the program took off, and then went nuts when it joined the WAC. If it’s going to happen, it’ll likely come from Florida International or Florida Atlantic thanks to its recruiting base. Troy wasn’t bad a few years ago and showed it could make a little bit of noise. But as a conference, no, it’s not going to be a power of any sort any time soon. For the Sun Belt title, my top three to win are 1. UL Lafayette, 2. FIU, 3. North Texas. That’s based on schedules, timing and talent. As far as the three best teams in the conference, 1. UL Lafayette, 2. MTSU, 3. Troy. ___________________________________ ---The problem in Florida NOW is there are a lot of I-A teams there unlike a few years ago there were only three cutting up the talent.... Florida, Florida State, and Miami (which recruited and still recruits a lot of players out of state). I think FIU and Fla Atlantic will move up some at the expense of some of the others especially South Florida and Central Florida. I suspect South Carolina with Spurier is taking a lot of talent as well. --- We are in state with a lot of I-A programs (10) and even a lot of I-AA schools and smaller colleges with football programs dividing up the talent plus a lot of out of state raiders. California probably has the advantage with the fewest I-A colleges compared to the population.
-
--- It is easier to recruit when you are a Big XII team than a SunBelt team. plus these recruits reallize they will get to play more years and probably get more high-level exposure than they would at UT (because of playing time)or at North Texas (likely more televison time or media space). --- SMU shooting us down in the 70's is still hurting our program, it might be us in the Big-XII instead of Baylor had we been admitted, after all we are larger and in a larger market and at the time had a good football and basketball program going. ---STOMP SMUt.
-
--When a person is in charge..... the final responsibility rests with him... whether he himself was corrupt, dishonest, or whatever. We pretty much do the same with a football program or a government situation, the final responsibility rests with the coach or leader to run a clean program, company, or government and to get honest people, qualified people in the right positions.. ---As for Hell, we don't get to make those decisions and whatever happens will happens. Some people seem to think they get to decide who is headed where but they are just guessing. All Religions are all about two words...beliefs and faith.... not proofs and absolutes. Because of that there are so many groups and sub-groups and most of us sleep well at night knowing that God makes the big decisions, not us.

Texas Tech ...... they are SMU's next opponent.!!! Go Tech.!!! My 2ed favorite changes every week to SMU's next opponent.. ---I also spent one year of Grad school at Tech and taught there. Wife graduated from there plus it is only 120 miles north of me. My two favorite Tech games (that I saw) are 1. The North Texas game in Lubbock that UNT came from behind that is now known as the tortillo game. 2. another one they lost to A&M in '67 when the Ed Hargett ,Aggie QB, could not find an open receiver and would up running fro 40 yards and the winning TD. That win eventually put them in the Cotton Bowl. I was wanting Tech to win but it was a great game and Dave Campbell Football placed it in one the greatest SWC games.

---Ken Starr spent $50,000,000 [$39 million on Clinton directly] investigating Whitewater which was a small 240 acre developement in the Arkansas Wilderness. That is almost $250,000 per acre spent in investigation fees. After all of that he found absolutlely nothing on the Clintons and wound up locking Mrs. McDougal on contempt when she refused to say in court what he wanted her to say. She had testified several times and said she wasn't going back again. The most crooked thing item about Whitewater was all the money spent by Starr. Since $50,000,000 later he found nothing on them he must have been very incompetant or else there was nothing to find....... You get to decide. ---He then got lucky with the Lewenski "affair" and went after him on that. That had nothing to do with Whitewater. http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/199...el.probe.costs/ ---A lot of retirement funds lost money on Enron (including a portion of mine) but to me the very worst situation occured to those unfortunate people who never worked from Enron but was retired and too old to ever work again. Enron accquired their companies and looted their retirement funds and these people were left with no income and no insurance and are struggling to survive without family help in many cases. Lay's activities of looting billions makes Whitewater's $300,000 alleged crooked loan look like peanuts. Too bad Lay did not die in prison the day before his scheduled release years from now. He had earned it and made Bonnie and Clyde look like saints and cheapskates... Long live Skilling... (in prison)....and several more that knew what was going on including Wendy Gramm, audit committee member. .

---I guess this thread partially confirms the theory of evolution. The original subject what it has become is totally different....even fictional. ---It really is a shame that our newer students/alums don't understand the status that we had in the MVC era. In an odd way we were better known and respected out of state more than in-state because if you weren't a SWC member you really did not get much "Texas" attention. I have even had several out-of-state students at UNT mention that to me when I was a student. We were in a conference that stretched all the way to Ohio and Kentucky with Cinn. and Lousiville. We were on the schedule of many of the best teams in America (excluding UCLA) and most of time competing pretty well, especially at home the the old "Snake Pit" which was the most hated gym in the conference. When you bought cokes at the "pit", they did not contain ice because the many of them would wind up on the playing floor after a questionable call. The craziest game I attended was our defeating ranked Cincinnatti two years after they won the National title. The person behind was tossed out of game for actually hitting a player with a smashed cup from many rows up in the stands. Usually cups were just toosed on the floor in protest and not at anyone. One goofy thing the cheerleaders sometimes did then after a questionable call was yell "give the ref a big hand" and the crowd would give them the German salute with one hand extended and yell. Unless you were there you really don't understand how crazy things could get. ---At this time the SWC and SEC had all white players none except Kentucky was very good. This is one reason that was understood by us why the SWC teams would rarely play us, WTSU, or Texas Western (UTEP)..... besides they did not want to lose to us which would have been likely. Kentucky would never play Louisville despite both being top teams until sometime duing the 80's. I think the first time occured when a NCAA playoff bracket forced them to play Louisville finally. ---It is my opinion that the best thing to ever happen to UNT was the break-up of the SWC. We get more attention now that we aren't the total outsider. UTEP was also somewhat but didn't really care since they are so distant from the other I-A colleges in Texas and were very successful in basketball and track.. .

---Supposedly that color was an accident. UT washed what had been normal orange uniforms (around 1920??) with something else and when when came out of the wash that odd orange appeared but they still used them and that odd color became standard.. ---Odd fact #2--- BEVO is the result of the Aggies stealing the UT mascot (also around 1920). They branded the thing 13 - 0 which was the previous year's score that the Aggies won. They then returned him. Texas obviously did not want 13 - 0 on the side of their mascot so they altered it to read BEVO. The 13 became B, - was part of the E, and O was still there. ---Odd fact #3-- Texas defeated North Texas in 1988 by 27-24 when the ref had tempory blindness and did not notice the UT receiver had gone out of bounds prior to catching the winnng TD..
