Sun Belt to 9 teams in '07 ?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
---What is their enrollment....and in what town/city are they located? I realize that they are a Sunbelt basketball member but are they very small like Rice or rather large like Texas State (27,000?) which is located between two large cities, San Antonio and Austin.. -

---Some of yawl need to read closely. I am no medical expert but they keep using the term inbalance of testosterone. There seems to be two types and they are not in the usual ratio. It is not so much about an excessive amount and again the way they usually get inbalance is the use of steriods but.... a sudden use of steroids is absolutely makes no sense since they require long time use. ---This whole situation does not make any sense, there is no benefit to use them for a day or so WHY would he or anyone have used them knowing they would be tested. The other days of competition he apparently passed without problems. Using anything as medically explained is senseless. ---To me it looks like some physical abnormality OR someone somehow got some into his body sosmehow (food/drink) OR someone messed with the drug exam OR the particular exam is not 100% reliable. MAYBE time will tell. ---Remember it took years before the security guard at the Atlanta Olympics was completely cleared...finally with no doubt when another confessed to being part of that. Much of the public opinion doesn't know about that confession that even now- ---It seems to me that the French officials just refuse to admit an American can actually win this race. Lance was hounded for years. America has far fewer racers in this sport but somehow we have done pretty well the past 20 years despite that with three different winners and 11? wins.... -

---The Landis situation is completely illogical.... A one day use of steriods or anything that this caused this would be of NO benefit.....it takes long term use to be of any help. Considering he had passed many more tests during the tour...this make NO sense... Why use a banned substance for no benefit????? besides he would know he was going to be tested. There has to be another explanation.... bad testing or something he ate or took to cause this odd inbalance. Let us hope the second test will show nothing or explain what happened. ---Bonds: People claim they saw him use Steriods, his body changed dramatically and his performance as well. Looks very "fishy" to me....plus he seems to be one of "the rules don't apply to me" people. Now the IRS is after him for not reporting income which he was diverting to his mistress...........what a great guy!! -

---I like your attitude... Congrats to a kid with a lousy background. I really don't understand those who knock others who are successful as long the success is gained honestly [unlike SMU did]. I see folks here that knock wealthy of SMU, it is not the wealth I dislike, it is all about SMU's general attitude toward others that a lot of their alums, students and administration display. ---As for the Dallas/Ft Worth discussion, I have never lived in either but the nightlife of downtown of Dallas is the worst of any major city I have been in (I have been in many world wide-New York, San Fran. Chicago, San Antonio, London Paris, Chicago, Rome, Munich etc.) Ft Worth may be much smaller but downtown at night between the Coliseum and the Courthouse (basicly Sundance area) beats anything I have witnessed in Dallas. -
---Some coaching poll systems (especially HS district or conference polls) have the coaches rank every team but their own team (ie opponents) and compile the list. That probably gets the best overall results and may be what they did. In national polls, coaches do vote for their own teams.

---What you said is true.... but they left the WAC because they viewed CUSA as better than the WAC. The WAC is even less attractive now that it has "moved" further West. Poor LaTech is now very isolated with only one conference school within 1000 miles of it. Their conference games will not attract any media or fan interest. The UNT/ LaTech game is a lot more interesting to their fans than any of their conference games. ---I do disagree that we will never improve our status... I still think the Big-East is not stable and those changes could eventually effect CUSA and Sunbelt teams. The Big East contains 8 schools that play football and 8 more that don't. It is unstable partially because of its size. That is 16 teams trying to win one basketball championship.... some will get discourage and want to change the situation. It may take a few years but it will fall apart.... just as the WAC did when it got too large... many left and formed the Western Athletic and the WAC and struggled to be stable ever since. ---Don't be surprised if the Mountain West doesn't add a team to go to 10 members as well. So many conference have 12 members now which creates an end of season playoff. the Pac-10 could raid the Mountain West l for a couple of teams.. If either of those happen the WAC could be doomed..... There is really nothing else out there to add.... plus LaTech isn't too pleased with their situation with the WAC either and may drop out of the WAC. They may be forced to go back to the Belt for financial (travel) reasons. ---As Yogi said is ain't over til it is over... and it is not over.... just a temporary time out at the moment while things stabilize somewhat and people see greener pastures elsewhere.. ---We need to better position ourselves for the next big swapfest!!!! It is a lot like earthquakes....... a lot of calm periods and then comes chaos and changes.

Stadium: ---If we start defeating saome "name" schools especially some from Texas, the probability of a new stadium greatly increases.... There will more interest and more fans in attendence. That is key at this point. "TheSMU game is Big" as it could starting shifting more interest in our direction from the area fans. A win at Texas (though extremely unlikely) would do wonders as well.

----I am 100% agreement with Long Jim (Horn). We do not want anything to do with the WAC....apparently SMU, UTEP, Rice, and Tulsa were not thrilled with it either....they left. ---The WAC would do absolutely nothing to help create any more interest than currently exists in the Sun-Belt. Being a member of the WAC would not help recruiting, not fan interest, and not media interest...... and about all that would increase would be travel costs. Remember, football is not the only sport we are involved in. It would be a terrible move on our part. No one in Texas is impressed or cares that we beat Fresno State or whoever. I personally see more potential for improvement in the SunBelt. The Belt plays a lot of SEC, ACC, CUSA, and Big XII teams largely because we are mixed-up within their conference boundaries. If the Belt starts getting wins then people will notice, No one gives a frap about Mountain-Zone schools and only the far Western Pac-10 has a lot respect and most people don't follow many of them outside of the California ones. The Pac-10 and WAC often finish their games after Texas and Eastern newspapers have gone to press and people watching TV news/sports has gone to bed. We would be worse off. ---The WAC would be an awful move anyway you look at it, even that area is sparce in population for the most part (except Calf.). ---CUSA may happen. For one, Memphis may not stay in that conf. The Big East is an odd conference at the moment. It really is two groups ..those that play football and those that don't. To me that conference is not stable......yet.... who knows what will happen there, it could split up some. If some of the football playing ones aren't successful in basketball as they have been they many decide to split off to start over. That happened in the old MVC...Louisville, Cinn, Memphis and North Texas left, they played football the most of others didn't. They basically split over football issues which the basketball ones did not care about.

---It is worth noting that we got put I-AA largely because we were prevented from being a SWC member because of the SMU vote and their efforts to convince others that we bad for the SWC [ actually bad for SMU because we would take metroplex attention away from them ]-----they feared us and still do which partially explains their attitude toward us. ---1988... SMU went 0-0 because they were kicked out of the NCAA,meanwhile we went 8-4 in I-AA and owned wins over TxTech and Rice...plus.... we should have owned a Univ. of Texas win as well but lost after at least a half-dozen terrible ref. calls in Austin.

SMU vs. UNT- Class Warfare?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
----I do not resent anyone being rich (have some friends and relatives that WAAAY past average, enough said) .... nor do I resent those who can go to college without having a job.......... What I hate about people is poor attitude and the disrespectfulness of others. I do understand that some people are intimidated by people with lots of money but I am not one of them. ---I have read your many posts (Southern Stang ) and I am sure I would get along with you just fine.........BUT the other guy that insists on continuing to refer to us as NTSU is feebly attempting to put North Texas down......again. Those are the guys I dislike and unfortunately many from SMU (or at least the ones I know) have that attitude. I suggest when you listen to the media or read the DMN when a SMU person is "talking" that you do so with a "North Texas perspective" and then you will understand that much of what is/has been said by SMU people is insulting to us. You and many of SMU are not really a problem but there is an unusually large group there that are. For it is worth we are not the only college that feels that way...I have heard a student of another university in Texas said about the same thing this week.....We are probably the one with the strongest feeling against them because we likely receive the most insults by SMUers.... ---Actually I think their putdowns of us shows a lot of insecurity by those of their status and perhaps some even feel inferior to others...crazy. -

SMU vs. UNT- Class Warfare?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
--Proof: ---That post indicates the typical "SMU lack of class and respect". I suspect you really do know the name of North Texas but you insist on being disrepectful..... either that or SMU folks are just plain ignorant of what is going on away from the SMU campus... Could be either I suppose.. ----I guess you may be correct, we are a different class, we are in one that shows some respect for others and doesn't think the world revolves around ourselves.... ----That comment demonstrats exactly why we outsiders (not SMU-types) are not very thrilled with those from SMU. Thanks for the demonstration this time.... it proves a point. --- Some on this board do not understand why some of us really want to defeat SMU (their attitude) more than UT. I would "like" to defeat UT but I really would "love" to defeat SMU because of their attitudes toward all outsiders (not just us). ___________________________________ ---"We are cleaning up the program." quote: SMU alum, Gov. Bill Clements ..just prior to SMU being kicked out of NCAA football and even more violations and disrespectfulness of NCAA rules. -

SMU vs. UNT- Class Warfare?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
....Income is not really an issue.... it is all about attitude not actually money.... It is not exactly a school of the "rich" but of people who think they are. ....NT is blue collar??? I knew a lot of extremely wealthy folks when I was at NT... It is probably true that we have more people working our way through school than they do ... but the real comparison should be 10 years after graduation. Besides a lot of somewhat blue collar folks I know are far from poor.... ever hear of ranching and the oil business? -
SMU vs. UNT- Class Warfare?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Class warfare???? ----Most SMU grads I personally know (not all, just most) don't seem to show a lot of class.... just arrogence. Even a very good friend of mine allowed his daughter to go there (honor grad) and she has become a total mess... divorced, lives somewhat at home, a menial job, and half nuts. ----Personally I have never considered UNT a lower class school, just less expensive and with students that usually demonstrate more class than that other one and definitely more pleasant to be around for the most part.. ---My opinion is that you are whatever class you think you, I don't think SMU as superior to anything...to start with many of them have a real attitude problem and are not very pleasant to be around. The UNT degrees my family has is outdoing a lot SMU people I know. There is a difference in saying "I am good" and actually being good. -
---You have misseed a lot, '07. There are have been years of efforts by them to keep us from getting the recognition we deserve. They are largely responsible for us not being admitted to two conferences [ SWC and CUSA] which could have changed our history and status in the athletic community, especially the SWC one. Constantly their adminisstration and others have made statements printed in the DMN and other media that they have the best "whatever program" in the area when they know otherwise and often just stated a program that we have excelled in for years. ---In short you have missed years of disrepect and efforts to "keep us in our place" and to keep us from distracting attention from their self perceived "prima donna elite" status . On the other hand UT was one that was pushing for our admission to the SWC and as a school has not been harmful to us. ---With SMU, it is a personal issue, with UT it would be nice to get the additional attention that would come with defeating a National Champion, but it isn't anything really personal about it.

---Part of the problem is that a lot of us actually went to NTSU and not UNT (that is what my diploma says and remained so for another 15+years). It is not as bad as I once heard when I was a student some... North Texas State Teacher's College ... which at that time was a name that had been gone almost 30 yrs. I hated that name. Even some of science lab equiptment still had NTSTU stickers on them during the 60's. No doubt some library books are still stamped that way. ---Those who do it just to irritate us (SMU), I just consider them stupid and have no respect for them but the rest I just accept the fact don't know better. Those folks (unfortunately, my era mostly, will pass away). ---For those who don't know it, the UNT name was actually approved in the early 60's by the House of Rep. but the Texas Senate had too many UT grads and basicly said "We have only ONE Un. of Texas and we aren't going to have a Un. of North Texas". Sort of funny since four? years later they had to rename Texas Western and Arlington to UTEP and UTA for financial reasons. UNT window stickers were actually on sale somewhere near campus when I was a student because someone had jumped the gun on the name change and had them printed. People would buy them and most would cut off "Univ of" and use them. --Having said the above, lets us call SWTSU what it is now.. Texas State.. we are no better when we do it as well even though that change it rather recent. I noticed a finalistist in the home run derby called his alma matre Southwest Missouri when interviewed, it is now known as Missouri State. Old grads names die hard sometimes.

NT Enjoying Bright Days In The Sun Belt
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
---This article is very kind to us. It demonstrates what SunBelt teams should do..... support each other except when competing against one another instead of tearing each other apart or undercutting them. Publicly we should not speak bad of fellow conference members. Our conference gots enough of "potshots" from ourside the conference, we don't need to contribute to it. What other universities in our conference accomplish is a reflection on us as well. ---I am not sure how old you (Pollock) are but Pat Boone was probably the "hottest" pop musical person during the mid-50's until Elvis appeared and the style of pop music changed, then the Beatles appeared about 64 and really changed things . He also appeared in several movies including "State Fair" as late as 1962 with Ann-Margaret. He currently holds the record for having the longest period between #1 hits when he recorded a heavy metal song about 1990. He had a squeaky clean image and was very religious and that song turned a lot of people against him. Giant may be a slight exageration but at one time "everyone" knew who Pat Boone was. At his peak I would say he was better known than Roy Orbison ever was but Orbison's fame has lasted better. He was more like Perry Como, Bennett, and Sinatra, than Elvis, Beachboys or Beatles which came later. -
Isn't TSU Texas Southern? You hit upon one of the reasons I never wanted the "Texas State Universisty" name at UNT. There are a lot of them including Tarleton State University. UNT or NT is rather unique and still a short name. I noticed one thread about TSU got locked... probably should have.. Several including me would like TSU in the SunBelt. ....however your statement about TSU admissions is very wrong (at least from everything I have read) .. The highest Avg SAT scores in Texas are at Rice and UT-Dallas (surprised?) . UT-D is largely a business/engineering school locasted in highly educasted Plano and is not a much else, major-wise. Usually Rice is higher but UT-D is higher sometimes. The last that I read showed UT and A&M next... This can largely be explained by the fact that both are now 50,000 and do not want to increase is size... so they are getting very selective to hiold down enrollment. Part of the UNT and TSU growth can be attributed to this since we are still smaller and get a lot their applicants that aren't admitted there. TxTech is so far away from population centers and is now smaller than UNT and soon TSU as well. I suspect as we approach 40,000 then admission scores at the our universities will tighten up as well. At SMU if you have a pile money you get in, especially if you agree to donate a small fortune. You can even have a 0.00 GPA as some Delta haus guys did. Tthis explains why they can't remember we are UNT unstead of NTSU. Feel sorry for them (joke).
