DRC article on 1st NT scrimmage,Tune leads to 2 TD
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
---We really are in trouble..!!! --- -
---Let see......... The last place team in the worse rated conference gets to play #1 and "Defending National Champion" in game 1...... pass the aspirin please. ---If your kid are the dumbest kid in the dumbest class on campus... it is rather unlikely that your kid that is all that average in intelligence.......... 109 may be low (now) but to put us in the middle is absolutly "green-eyed optimism".....especially when the last scimmage was a comedy of errors. --- It the #1 team in the nation (Texas?) can't center the ball correctly they will lose, even if playing a low ranked team.... unfortunately it doesn't seem to be them but us at the moment....[ Feel my pain!!!] Forget the rest of practice --That is THE PRIORITY, get the ball into the hands of the QB and absolutely don't leave it on the ground. [ oh the pain!!!..I need some painkiller, and soon... ] ----Is there any possibility that all those turnovers and fumbles were an attempt to make UT over-confident.? I am sure they are shaking in their boots now after reading these articles about our screw-ups and great ranking... [ Where is that pain/killer?? ]

DRC article on 1st NT scrimmage,Tune leads to 2 TD
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
----The worse item in the two articles is the turnovers, especially the center exchange is is really nuts. That should be almost automatic. Just wait until they get 100,000 eyes watching and thousand more watching from home... Then you will see nervous. -
DRC article on 1st NT scrimmage,Tune leads to 2 TD

---Tune, a walk on??? Sounds like the QB situation is nowhere near settled and not is great shape. Someone need to step up and separate themselves from the rest in a hurry. We play UT in two weeks. .... -
1st practice notes from FW*TElegram article
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
--Sounds terrible about center exchanges, should never happen.... turnovers is harder to evaluate ...sounds like defense is hustling but the offense is messing up....a lot of turnovers could be from the poor center exchanges. --Personally I think our best chance to do really well against Texas is to get turnovers early (hopefully a cheap score or two) and get their inexperienced QB's confidence shaken. We just can't afford to do the same. -
----I agree with the statement about bashing the Belt. We are in it and should accept it and make the best of it. It will improve, not likely to Big-XII standards but it will get better as teams improve and start winning some OCC games. I do agree CUSA would be a better fit for us because of local in-state opponents but a lot of those schools are small and liklely all of them are much smaller than us. ...which brings up the point that we should do a lot better in fans in the stands than we do. Nothing else appears to be even remotely possible (today) but things change. Personally I want nothing to do with the WAC and think in the long run it is no better than the Belt.... in fan appeal or status. ---It appears to me that more promotion of UNT would be possible in the DFW area, but the best promotion would just be play more Texas teams and defeat some of them. That will get us us more "space and time" in the media. North Texas really got noticed here in West Texas when they defeat TxTech a couple of times and almost did one other. The odd thing it seems that UNT did not try much to recruit West-Texas kids much then when they had suddenly gotten a lot of local attention here and might have done fairly well.... in fact lately it seems to have gone the other way with fewer ones.

Cobbs make Pats Highlight Video
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to GreenBat's topic in Mean Green Football
---If New England has no real use for Cobbs they could trade him for a player that might be useful (a WR for example?) that is on a team that is overloaded there. I would like to see him go to Jets but tht would be a intra-division trade which makes it a little unlikely, but who knows? He did himself a lot of good with that last game, running, blocking, and catching. Someone may have their eye on him if he is cut or made available to othrs. -
--I agree...but... considering the name (TEXAS BOWL) it is still an insult to single out one Texas team (North Texas) to not be eligible. I don't think we are really expecting an invitation but we just dislike the fact that if we somehow managed to be 10-2, 11-1, 12-0, or better than any of those other teams, we would not be considered for a bid. It is still an insult. It would been just as easy to state a member of Big XII, CUSA, plus "any I-A univ in Texas" instead of naming "TCU" individually. ---It would have been much better public relations and would have "cost them" nothing and besides we would have had to earn the bid anyway. ---It reminds me of the "Texas Sports Hall of Fame" in Waco... if you are somehow connected to a former SWC school, then you are much more likely to be in it... thus Abner Haynes isn't, despite an oustanding AFL (NFL) and college career and being a pioneer in Texas desegegration in addition to that.

Read this on the SMU board
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to Mean'n'Green07's topic in Mean Green Football
---Amen brother on that. ---What "gets" me the most is the absolute intolerance of others who have a different opinion... and I don't mean about just Chritianity or moral issues. I don't think some of them ever read (or would read anything that has a slightly differnet viewpoint. They just ignor facts, have a I am right attitude. Their "language or implied language" is much more rough than appears here. I have read several others and this group is about as civil as it gets. I admit that I have not checked out SMU much, just when a link is provided. One can't only stand so much arrogance very long. Maybe I have been lucky but the LaTech one was always rather civil when I read it. -

"Texas Bowl" replaces Houston Bowl
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
---I Agree absolutely but an addition to that is-- defeat some teams from inside the state: [sMU, Baylor, SMU, Rice, SMU, TCU, SMU, TxTech, SMU, UTEP, SMU, Houston, SMU, and be competitive with the Aggies and Horns when we play them. That will get the attention of Texas media and Texas fans, and help recruiting inside Texas. Recruits will then see us as an equal. I repeat SMU because of local media and local interest where there are lots of HS players. [besides I admit, I don't like most of the SMU folks for what they have said and done to us for years, some are ok including Southern Stang who shows a lot of class] ---All this means that we get need to get a lot of Texas teams on our schedule when we can, and defeat a lot of them, especially those beside the powereful Horns which could defeat about anyone usually. PS: No blowouts??? --What if we blew them out?? --Would that be ok?? --LOL.. -
--Thanks, "Cedric Hardman", he was on the team that almost defeated Arkansas (15-17) and this was a great 10-1 Arkansas team that was highly ranked and that lost only to Texas who in the process of winning 30 consecutive games. --If I remember right, NT had the ball close to the Arkansas goal as time ran out. It is a scary thought to think he and Joe Green were lined up beside each other for North Texas. Meanwhile Steve Ramsey (future Bronco starting QB) was the North Texas QB. --And we received no bowl bid...crazy-- Then even more than now (fewer bowl then also) , bowl bids had a lot to do with how many fans you would bring. We need to increase attendence!!!! ---Yes,Virginia, North Texas had been mentioned on National NFL TV before, a lot.
-
---At appears the Jets have a big problem ay RB and Houston may have as well. Several others have very little depth at RB. Patrick would be an interesting additon to many teams because he blocks well and can catch and run.

The Texas Bowl and the voice of reason...
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
---When I stop reading and hearing insulting remarks from SMU officials in the DMN and other sourses about us or just claiming they have the only whatever academic program in Dallas area then I will back off criticizing them and making fun of their attitude... ---True we have made mistakes and our administration could have done better at times but had been become members of the SWC we would not have been in the situation that we are now in... You have to admit that!! ---I don't think we wanted to go to I-AA but were forced into it by the NCAA as was UTA, Lamar, and WTSU. We did better than the others did, they dropped football or in the case of WTSU, they now have non-scholarship football. We survived and now need to more create fan interest and put seats in the stands. I haven't notice that dropping football has helped their public standing any. Dumb idea, Gonzaga is the exception and not typical of colleges without football. Texas is a football state. A university without football will get no athletic recognition. -
Patrick is doing great..... I am really impressed with his blocking and keeping the defense away from his QB. Play like that will keeep him in the NFL.... Good Luck, go get em!!
-
Good grief..NO.. Steve Ramsey was the starting QB for Denver in the 70's. Spider Lockhart was a Giant starter for a long time. Ron Shanklin was a Steeler reciever for Bradshaw (starter), Beasley Reece was a Safety for Dallas and long time starting safety for the the Giants and there have been many more. A lineman (Name?) was a pro-bowl starter for the 49ers.

NCAA Attendance letters go out to 13 schools
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
---The MAC was really impressive... and some say they are a better conference than the Belt.... They have had some good teams but no one watches them apparently. ---It appears that SMU may be cheating as is their tradition...just on attendence numbers now. -
The Texas Bowl and the voice of reason...
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
---I would not have.... These guys really need to THINK a little about they did. Including every I-A university in Texas would have accomplished the same thing, not made us mad and probably would have made no difference, they still get TCU maybe.. The only difference would have been if we somehow managed to win 9-12 games and looked more attractive than anything other team they were considering. Then it would get very interesting.... ---It is a slap in the face... especially because of the name, TEXAS BOWL. With name Houston Bowl or whatever then maybe things would have been different. I am sure the state of Texas is looking forward to having Southern Mississippi or Central Florida being the host team of the TEXAS BOWL. If they have a poorer record than we have then it really will be an issue to gripe about. I agree with you TI-Green-001..... If SMU had not voted to keep us out of the SWC 20+ years ago then we would not be in this mess. Meanwhile they continue to take pot shots at us every chance they get. Did I mention that I have NO love for SMU.... #@$%^% them anyway. -
The Texas Bowl and the voice of reason...
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
---If we are NOT good enough to be invited we will not be invited... that I accept completely....But when they rig up the situation to include two conferences and one extra team (TCU) then there is a problem....especially when it really cuts only one university (UNT) of the picture. ---I am not expecting to be invited but if a miracle occured and we went 12-0, 11-1, 10-2 or something like that then we should be considered... It says TEXAS BOWL and we are in Texas. The goofy thing now is that Iowa State, UAB or East Carolina might be the host team and have a worse record than we have. "That just ain't right". ---I think I am and others here are being reasonable. We are not asking for a bid...just to be considered if we deserved a bid and have an outstanding record. This is as crazy as gerrymandering .... and smacks of the SWC eliteness that we faced for years. ---Instead of the TEXAS BOWL, perhaps it should called the "Former SWC and Current Friends Bowl" -

---Ok -- I can't spell salary, can you do calculus? I teach it.. My test Monday will include functions involving practical applications of first and second derivatives and finding critical points also finding tangent lines to various curves. My other class has a test about inverse trigometic functions and equations along with a few other minor conversions and identities. Be glad to mail you a copy...and will expect it returned by mail the next day when completed. LOL... I went to the Ben Franklin/Mark Twain school of spelling... Both said every intelligent person should be able to spell a word in more than one way. Beats me where you found lose/loose which could be a typo maybe and the misuse of "their/there" which appears constantly here in posts. PS: you missed seeing "benefit" in a previous email....LOL ---Actually I do hate to see posts that are "loaded" with poor spelling or English. Supposedly we went to college a few days. -
"Texas Bowl" replaces Houston Bowl
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
---If I were there with an email address available to me I would point out to them that 9 of the 10 Texas I-A teams are eligible. They should have just included all Texas I-A teams (which gets TCU and us) plus Big-XII and conference USA teams. They still would not have to pick us if weren't deserving. It is the TEXAS BOWL and only one Texas team can not go....(even if we had a undefeated record)............... very insulting.!!!!! Do you have a Houston Chronicle email address that be posted here???? Maybe the dummies are so enept they did not realize what they just did. You might be surprised what could happen if they were swamped with emails from UNT and realized we actually care and that there are lot of us. ---If we get that address...keep it short and mention that 9 of the 10 Texas teams are eligible but not UNT which is completely unfair for a TEXAS BOWL. It is completely stupid to have Marshall and Iowa State eligible as the host and we aren't. -
"Texas Bowl" replaces Houston Bowl
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
---I don't care if we have had 0-11 record for four years. It is still an insult to be the ONLY I-A team in Texas to not be eligible to play in this bowl... Obviously if we were 0-11 we would not be picked anyway. The ENTIRE point is that we are the ONLY TEXAS I-A team that would not be elgible even if we were 12-0. It is still an insult to us. ---It is still the old SWC buddy system..... every I-A team in Texas was a member of the SWC except UTEP (and us, thank SMU for the screw-over!! ) and now UTEP is in a league with 3 teams that were----SMU, Rice and Houston-- so they get included now. ---Being a Belt team is indirectly meaningless... not being in a league with former SWC members is everything. -
"Texas Bowl" replaces Houston Bowl
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
---Absolutely, we once had company, UTEP and us, but now they they are a member of CUSA they are in a league with the old SWC teams. In the older days it was SWC and "there are others???? Things aren't good but better than they once were. ---Our athletic dept need to point out to them than 9 out of 10 Texas I-A teams are elgible for the Texas Bowl bid and only one Texas I-A teams isn't....UNT... which ain't exactly right. They could have simply said any I-A teams in Texas plus Big XII and CUSA members and get around it without insulting us (even if we unlikely to get a bid).....but they didn't.......jerks! -

---Cedric Benson is an odd situation... He was a very good baseball player as well and had signed a professional baseball contract (Yankees?) He had been drafted by them and in the summer he played professional baseball (minor league) and had received a rather good salary for it. He played for them I think three summers. He did not play the summer before his senior year at UT. He had signed a fairly large bonus and received a pretty good salary as well. I am surprised that this is not very widely known but it isn't. He could afford a new plasma TV and well as a good car. The reason I am aware of this is that is from Midland, where I live. --- Years ago this would not have been illegal by NCAA standards but it is not now. Pay from a different sport no longer makes a person a professional any more. There have been several cases that a kid tries pro-baseball, fails or dislikes it, and goes back to college and plays football or some other sport sometimes on scholarship. -

--As I posted on another thread...we do have an advertising and marketing school plus as you pointed out we also have a computer science and graphics courses. We should be smart enough to use this talent. That in itself doesn't say much for the academic part of UNT or the leadership. We should promote ourself better...one thing for sure SMU and the other division I schools sure are not going to do it for us.
