  1. Troy, Florida Atlantic, Buffalo, and La-Monroe has been mentioned.
  2. --I am from Midland.. Ced Benson was the runningback here for three years with Andy Brewster as his center and the tight end on that team was Eric Winston (Miami) who was drafted by the Texans this year.... That group only won state 3 consecutive years and did not really face much competiton in the process. How many more RBs played all four years at UT and was an impact player. I guess the pro scouts were all nuts and know less because he was a first round pick. --I also noticed he ran right though us on the first play from srimmage when we played them in Austin two years ago. He sat most of the game to hold the score down (not that Selvyn Young is a lot worse). ---Sound more like more UT hate.. the boy was good, extremely good.. so good that his HS teams and college teams rarely lost. In fact his freshman/sophmore? year the only game UT lost was to OU was when he did not start, a mistake which they admitted later because UT picked it up after he came in.. Wasn't he a Heisman finalist???? Perhaps you have seen something few others have!! ---Yes he won against HS competition, but he was a HS kid and even a young sophmore (age 15) when they won state the first time. ---He was a fairly good baseball player as well and played baseball in the minor leagues for three summers after HS. He had some kind of contract arrangement that he could stop for fall football at UT. He did not play prior baseball to his senior season. .
  3. ---Abilene has Dyess Air Base which has a lot of B-1s and is very active. It is not as active as during the cold war though when it had B-52's constantly flying with nukes ready to go on a moments notice. ---Fort Hood is not extremely far away either and is huge (Americas largest army base?) and contains the largest armoured units in the USA. It constantly make news because of Iraq. I am sure Bell provides dozens if not 100's of choppers to them. ---I am not sure where they are coming from but the area around Brownwood/Ballenger/Brady constantly has fighter pilots practicing dog-fighting. Once in a while one crashes in the area. Also in Brownwood is the head-quarters of the 36th division which is now the Texas National Guard and is partially deployed in Iraq plus it was the first American Army division to hit the European coast during WWII. They invaded Italy at Solero (south of Naples) about 10 months before Normandy. Another Texas division that invaded shortly afterward contained Audie Murphy from the North Texas area.. ---All of these are within 150 miles of FORT Worth which no longer has a fort or sizable military base..
  4. ---This Texas.... trust no weather report unless it is for the next hour.... and even then it sometimes is wrong. The worse hailstorm I was ever in happened ten minutes after the weatherman on TV declared the storm and rains were over. Over $40,000,000 of hail damage occured, mostly roofs....
  5. ---Why do you like a "damn Yankee" team over a homestate Texas team? Beside Ohio State has a history of all sorts of athletic problems including academic cheating (tutors writing papers and other things for years). Even years ago, good old Woody Hayes was a complete embarassment to coaches in general with all his antics including hitting opposing players and grabbing yard markers and throwing them onto the field, usually in the direction of the refs.. Had he been an NFL coach he would have fined severely ans suspended. Maurice was a fine example of an alum there, a total idiot and outlaw.. ---I haven't noticed OSU being willing to play us either. What have they done for us...nothing. At least D.Royal was a big supporter of us being admitted to the SWC along with Broyles of Arkansas. Unfortunately it did not happen due to SMU's efforts to be the metroplex's team. ---Maybe you don't like the fact that UT wins but they have done it without being constantly reviewed for cheating or some other scandal or recruiting outlaws. They have done nothing to us other than defeat us. Even the high score against us was not the result of their keeping their first team in until the end as Nebraska always did to lesser opponents until a few years ago.. They had earned and deserved the 10-70 loss that Tech gave to them. --I do not care for SMU but there are lots of reasons...they have tried to harm US every way possible and have no respect for us or anyone else and have a history of thinking that rules do not apply to them. UT doesn't have that type of history. ..
  6. --- I have always said, "Everyone needs to act they are 12 once in a while". Makes life more fun. ---I think my wife would object if I said 18, she would oppose me dating and chasing girls, besides that would get me in trouble !!! LOL.
  7. ---During the MVC days we were probably better known outside the state than inside. We were in a conference with Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, and a lot of Mid-West Universities (a great basketball conference) Meanwhile inside of Texas we were mostly ignored.... because we were not a SWC member and they would not play us either partially because we had gone through integration and they hadn't so the rumors went. [note who they played then, mostly SEC and ACC teams] We had a lot of out of state students in that era partly because of our low out-of-state tuition then and also so many out-ot-state students I knew had families members in the DFW area who had moved here from up North. ---It bothers me that some posters consider us 2ed class. We have a lot of great programs which are better than most other universities in the state. Football is important but it is not the only thing to be considered. It just gets us recognition. For example Ivy leagues schools aren't so great at sports but they are considered good universities. I like sports but it is not the ultimate or only item to consider. ---Nice post from the now Californian. I ran into the same thing in San Fran a couple of summers ago when I had a NT shirt or sweatshirt on. Most assumed I was from Dallas area.
  8. ---All those games prior to 1950 or even 1960 have little meaning to todays situation. I use 1960 because about that time TV became popular with TV games and transportation changed greatly with jet travel and interstate highways. You also note that college enrollment jumped rapidly about that time as well. Interest in football really jumped about that time and even the NFL expanded with the creation of the AFL and teams outside of the North-East (Cowboys, for one). Prior to the end of of WWII, even 1950, there were some really strange opponents just because they were closeby. prior to then the widespread fan appeal did not really exist much.
  9. ---The Law school was passed wasn't it??? Perry and the current Legislature who are very education unfriendly did not fund it. UTEP has a completed Pharmacy School but they failed to provide funds to operate it as well. The 2003 Perry/Craddock Legislature cut university funding by nearly $700,000,000 then let each university set it own tuition (to make up for the budget cuts). This explains the rapid increase of tuition in Texas. In 2005 they passed no budget at all. ---Enough politics but people need to know what is really happening to our schools and univeristies. We get what we pay for, we are 49th in state taxes per capita. --No more name changes... people would just think it is some newly established place!!!!
  10. --- Sometimes the middle of nowhere can be good.... there isn't a whole lot of other things to do (unlike in the metroplex). That is one reason HS games in West Texas is such a big deal.... 10,000-15,000 at a game is normal and the area is football crazy. What else is there to do in College station that is not university related. ---Playing schools from Texas helps a lot as well, their alums work with the alums of the schools they play against which really creates interest and they really don't want to hear about getting defeated the rest of the year either. That doesn't happen to us if we lose to Troy or whoever. I don't think CUSA is all that great BUT those members would really increase interest and media attention for us. To heck with the WAC, the situation would be no better but travel expenses would really increase.
  11. ---We play Uni. of Texas (National Champion) first.... We stand a whole lot better chance of winning game #2. Would you rather us to discuss the likelyhood of winning the first one????? --- We should bet on which one of us allows the most points in week #1. Either one of us could win that one. If Tech gets their system "chugging" they could be good for 80, Ask Nebraska or even TCU. Go Tech!! (wife is an Alum, I am a non-degree one as a former student and part-time instructor, also a West-Texan)
  12. Three kids: (good collection) 1. Son (Aggie grad.--software eng./Law Student) attends some NT games 2. Son (North Texas grad --software eng., has a patent or two) 3. Daughter (North Texas Grad--Business-Computer Networking field) me: A couple of NT degrees in Mathematics -- wife: TxTechsan
  13. --Agree-- let it play out. Not a lot of details here. Someone mentioned go to rich neighborhoods instead. I know of a local underage girl (her father was a fortune 500 person) who got caught doing what I said... Grabbing beer and running. If this is what happened then it may not be a real serious deal. The assault item may have been the other person, as I read it, and it may be pushing off to get away and not what most people think of as a violent crime.. Kids do dumb things at times and if that is the case and he has no record of anything else he may not be a bad kid really. I have had over 8000 students and a lot of them have done a lot of stupid things but were good citizens as a whole. --- If it was actually a normal robbery ( for money or items of real value) then forget him, he not worth the risk..... We don't need the image that Miami has. .....(people do remember that stuff, note-- another poster commented about it) ---Baylor already has image problems due to the basketball, shooting/murder situation... They are taking no chances.
  14. ----After reading carefully it is quite possible he just did a stupid thing. No weapons and perhaps some of the others did things that he never expected. It was mentioned as originally being a shop-lifting situation that got out of hand.... It could have been a stupid beer run ( not exactly rare since minors can't legally buy it) that some idiot escalated into a bad situation. The "beer run" if that is what it was is not smart but it is not exactly prison material either. ---Armed robbery... totally different situation or if they looted a cash-register. Assault could just mean someone pushed back the store keeper who physically tried to stop them.. Apparently the kid was driver and not the real problem person in the store.
  15. --Sure gets the cat's attention!!! LOL
  16. --You have got to be kidding!! Would you also support having your brother marry a "hot" woman if she had spent time walking the street for a living. I have more pride in myself and my university that that. I would not want to be lumped into that class of people. --- I suppose that my family could become instantly super rich by marrying into a family of mobsters but I would not want that either. ---I have notice a degree of disrepect on this board of SMU because of their history of cheating ways.... It just is not worth it to win a few games.
  17. - ---From what I have read from people who were present at Bush Jr.'s first cabinet meeting meeting, war with Iraq was mentioned from the beginning, long before 9-11. Colin Powell did not really support it and he is long gone. --- I doubt Germany will ever be a problem again, too small, plus the rest of war is very technical now and Germany doesn't contain a lot of religious fanatics like the Middle East. Political Religious fanatics are the absolute worse folks possible, you can't reason with them because of all the emotional issues involved. After all the Protestant /Catholic wars in Europe the framers of our Constitution hoped to avoid all those problems that religion in government causes. Islamics crazies aren't the only ones that have caused problems, Ireland has had problems (Catholic/Protestant), and even the Bosnia situation was more about religion than most people know. The Serbians were killing off an ethic group that was mostly non-Christian (mostly Islamic) but not the nutty Islamics like the ones in the Middle East. Even Hitler targeted a religious group.. the Jewish people. Religion and government is a bad mix...... any religion......too much emotion......very little common sense used.......absolutely no compromising. ---As for Austin.... I am hoping for a lot bettter results than two years ago... I was there for that one... it was very disappointing. ---Some of mine may have met your family (mothers side, they fought in Revolution under Lafayette and some may have been here in the mid 1600's in S.C. and not part of the religious crazies in New England that was hanging or torturing each other for being Witches or Infidels).
  18. ---That was a dumb quote from the Animal House... not meant to be accurate. The drunk and stupid comment below is also from that same movie. ---Doubt he cared... U-Boats had been sinking American shipping near the American coast for years. Most Spectacular was the sinking (and explosion) of a oil tanker a couple of miles from Hilton Head S.C. prior to Pearl Harbour. Media reported it as an accident, it wasn't, we just did not have the resourses to do anything about it yet. . We only had about 250,000 troops (Total) when Poland was invaded and had spent two years trying to catch up. Our Army was better than Polands but not as good as the British at the beginning of the war. We were 1000's of miles away and thought we were safe, we weren't. We were in not in any kind of shape to fight anyone. My father on Pearl Harber Day was involved in constructing an Army camp (Camp Bowie in Brownwood, which was the home of the 36th and other divisons). We were desperate to catch up and construct weapons, we had very few modern plances, ships or even guns. Many American troops went to basic training with wooden guns and had fired a weapon only a few times before being shipped out to Europe. American planes were antiques, our carriers had wooden decks, our tanks were never very good except in troop support. In tank to tank warfare against German Panzers we lost by a ratio of about 9 to 1. Our air support destroyed their many of tanks especially in Battle of the Bulge. The one big advantage we had was they could not touch American industry while we were decreasing theirs and could not replace their losses. I had a family member that was an American "Tanker" under Patton and in the Bulge. 90% of his unit were casualities. He was damn lucky. Had Germany succeded in taking Britian we would have been in a world of hurt, with no place to launch an attack and the Germans would have the Mediterrean completely under control with no good European base to resupply Allied ships or keep troops. The Normany or Salerno (Italy) invasions could not have happened without a place to stage an invasion. ---Yes this topic has been hyjacked but young members have no idea what conditions were when the war started. We had just gone through the depression and had an awful excuse for an Army as did France, Poland, etc. Britain and Germany were the only exceptions and the German army was far superior. Repeating, it took us years to catch up and defeat Germany despite how small it was.... Never will we be in that condition again, distence from Europe or Asia is not safety as we thought then. Car---My last two were Mercedes (German) but now own a Chysler (owned by Mercedes ie. Daimler-Chrysler). I have a German name as well but family has been here since 1850's. It was not lost on the Germans that the American Allied commander was Eisenhower (a German name) and the Pacific fleet was under command of Nimitz, another Texas-born-German as was Eisenhower.. 30% of American troops in WWII had a Germanic name according to Charles Ambrose's book "Citizen Soldiers". Another odd fact.. the most common second language in Texas as of 1900 was German, not Spanish, which included my family..
  19. ---Yep France surrendered rather quickly and the Germans pushed the British Army into the sea at Dunkirk at the same time. It then took several years for the combined armies of USA, the British Empire and the Soviet Union to defeat them..... The important thing to note might not be that that the French army was all that bad but instead that the German army was all that good and had extremely good generals and more modern weapons..... ---No I don't respect Hitler, nor the Nazis beliefs, but the German army was extremely good and well equiped in the early years.. We are very fortunate that Hitler became impatient and started WWII when he did. Had Germany waited about a 3-5 years they would have had Atomic Bombs, good jet planes and a very good rocket system povided by Werner Van-Braun ( who we captured and used to create our Space Program.... They were far ahead of us in those areas when the war started. --Back to football ---Good luck Patrick!!!
  20. --These loonies probably think Univ. of Houston and Sam Houston State is the same place.
  21. ----Yeah we are down there with Texas Southern, get real..... These rankings are a joke. Strange how almost all the top universities are in the north. I think the closer that you are to the media centers of NY, Philadelphia and Washington (also big population centers) the higher you rank. My two sons are software engineers and when they were co-ops both had a MIT co-op in their group as well. Both said the MIT co-ops were next to worthless....but they came from a "great" school. Neither were hired meanwhile both my sons, one with a NT degree and another an Aggie degree were immediately hired full time then went back to finish their last (fall) semester. ---A few years ago US News listed Princeton as having a top tier Law school. They did not even have one but had a prelaw program. They have one now. Reminds me a whole lot of BCS thing...... It is BS, and I don't mean a degree. ---UT-Dallas third-tier???? every college except Rice in this state has lower average SATs than they do (including UT-Austin) ... It is mostly engineers and business majors...... More BS. --- SMU's ranking is likely based on the amount of tuition they charge, if it expensive, it must be good ......... I wonder where Bill Clements ( and his checkbook) were when they put this list together ????
  22. ---Faulk is now 30, closer to 31.....meanwhile Patrick is 23... 7 years younger and seems to have the same skills and similiar size. Who would you keep??? ---Both seem to be rather intelligent guys and neither have a history of causing problems. Faulk's future is short at best. What edge does Faulk have other than he has been there for a while?? That is likely a push since he will not improve from where he is now, Patrick could. Patrick has hope if he keeps producing, he is totally different than the two big backs --one of which will not around long either (Dillion is almost 33). Faulk has been the 3rd down back or long yardage back which Patrick could fit into since he can catch --as last week showed. Money-wise Patrick is chaep at this point...cheaper than Kevin I would think, so that helps the salary-cap. Practicing with Brady tells me that are testing him out very closely and are considering keeping him if he matches Kevin Faulk. --Several teams seem to be RB desperate for an decent or backup RB. Faulk would likely be better trade bait than Patrick since he has an NFL history.
  23. "if that's the kind of smack we can expect from NTSU fans this year, it's really going to be boring come game time. Go and practice some more, then come back. At least we can rest well in the mean time knowing we blackballed y'all from Conference USA --I and some others have been criticized for our SMU "hatred" and bashing. As long as they keep putting out this type of material they will continue to deserve to get every anti-remark SMU remark we make. .... and NO, this is not rare and is the attitude that I usually see in the media and in person from people that have no idea that I support UNT. In fact some students in my class have the same attitude about them and they live in West Texas and do not attend UNT. SMU "shoots" in almost every direction...after all they think they are superior to the rest (after all they DO pay higher tuition and are therefore better) or perhaps they realize their time has passed and are trying to hang on their past glory which no longer exists. *** One can pay $60,000 for a "Yugo" but it is still a Yugo, not a Mercedes. ***
  24. --Maybe --but what kind of choice is Hell, Hades, Pergutory, OR the Underworld--- that is four choices but none of them are exactly ideal trips. If the center was a bright spot then the QBs must not be capable of holding a ball, because it kept falling to the ground....just shoot me....less painful.
