  1. --They defeated that powerhouse Temple of CUSA.......
  2. --I Listened on radio... and we lead a lot of the time..... The reason we even played them was that Tennessee had backed out of their deal ( after we defeated them) and we managed to replace them with Texas.... A very good game .. Fry and co. were interesting... they were never boring.... win or lose and they won a lot. Without Earl available, North Texas would have won... His long run near the end (right offensive side? was the difference. I saw it a lot of times on news highlights and those coaches shows that existed then.
  3. ---McMurtry is better known for the books (and Movies) "Lonesome Dove", "Last Picture Show", "Texasville", and "Terms of Endearment. than the above movie. Any famous writers from Baylor??? ---Our alums have won more Grammys than any university including Jullaird. We have dozens of successful professional musicians and a lot of them were not even music majors. ---We have many Miss Texas's and a couple Miss Americas... Baylor might have a Miss Texas or two but not very many, and no Miss Americas. ---Our Comp-sci program was the first (or in the first group) of accredited programs in America... when did they began a comp-sci program? ---We have exactly the same number of NFL hall of Fame players (1) as they do but ours was voted in first. -- A lot of accounting grads (from other colleges) come to UNT for a CPA prep program. One of my cousin's husband did, then passed. Outstanding business department at UNT. ---When did Baylor first integrate and allow minorities to attend ? I believe WE did "the Christian thing" and allowed blacks to enter more than 10 years before they did. ---And one last shot I notice they open their season on this coming Sunday...what happened to the old Baptist belief of "keeping Sundays Holy". Could it be money or greed from TV money??? I once had a Baptist Deacon take "a cheap shot" at me because I worked once a Month on Sunday when I was in college... (to pay for my education) ...jerk.... he was shopping on Sunday and even eating out after church... what is the difference?... it was his type that kept us open and caused restaurant people to work on Sunday.....then he thinks WE are the heathens.. This is a very short list of how we are better than "those guys". FINALLY: If the number of championship a university has won defines how good a university is then the University of Miami must be a lot better than Yale, Harvard, or MIT......... and it is obvious than Texas is far superior to Baylor by that measure. .
  4. 1. NO STUPID PENALITIES (everygame) 2. Get some turnovers and hopefully early to rattle the UT QB. 3. Don't commit turnovers. 4. Go with a positve attitude and never give up.
  5. ---I don't think you understand Rick's signature.... That is an old picture of UT scoring against us in 1988 when we "supposedly lost" by 24-27.. The problem is: we should have won because even the UT announcers thought he was out of bounds when that catch was made in the final min or two.. .. in short it was a bad call (one of many that day) that cost us the game. [see I actually defended Rick and I think he thinks I dislike him , which is not true] ---LongJim never supports UT over us.... I can't remember why he uses it but it makes sense. ..
  6. --Never give up.....wierd things happen. SMU somehow defeated 11-1 TCU last year. The Houston Texas in 2004 defeated the Steelers (Super Bowl champ now) with less than 50 yds offensive with good D and turnovers. I saw a state-ranked team lose a playoff game (by 14) to a unranked team that had less 35 yards of offense but got lots of turnovers and could stop their opponent inside their own 20. ______________________________ Anything is possible.... May the ghost of the 1975 Tennesse game arise again. NT defeated them (with a West Texas QB and we have one again) at the largest stadium in the South (it was full) at that time. Go get em.!!!!
  7. ----I will be surprised if Cobbs is not in uniform somewhere.... After TWO good showings he should be getting some attention of someone. Other teams hang around like buzzards waiting for other teams (especially good teams like NE) to make cuts of players they can use. If that doesn't happen he will make the practice squad I would think.... I still would not be shocked to hear that he or Faulk has been traded off somewhere. Patrick is 7 (seven) years younger and can be around a lot longer than Kevin. ---NE is in an interesting situation this year.... they are good (maybe not as good as in the past) but their schedule is very soft.... Jets, Buffalo, (both twice) also Green Bay, Detroit, Houston, and Tennesee...... none of those strike fear in the eyes of their opponents.... backups may get lots of playing time.
  8. --Was Todd Dodge really a coach at UNT... If so I was not aware of it. --The statement about students being mean to football players seems a bit crazy.... the truth is that in HS he may have received lot of local attention and when he got here he was just "one of the herd", and that just bothered him. That happens to a lot of HS athletes when they go to college and now aren't considered anything special anymore and don't get a lot of attention or "breaks". We had a former HS QB here about 20 years ago commit suicide in college his second year and a lot of rumors was about he was no long the center of attention but just one "of the herd", I think he also had girlfriend problems as well, probably related to the fact he was no campus/hometown hero anymore. ---No we are not very optimistic this year, we lost 63-0 last time and since then UT has won 24 of 25 games and are the defending National Champion. Even Colorado lost to them 70-3 in the Big-12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. Our experience with top5 teams lately has not been good---UT, OU and LSU. Added to that, we had a poor year last season. ---The price of tickets are not cheap (for poor seats) and the odds of winning are slim....plus it is on TV. Most of us will just stay home (I went in 2004) and hope for the best. Thus tickets were sent back. --The guy sounds like a jerk...glad he left......he did not even appreciated the "free" education he was getting.... I notice he did not play at UT either, would not surprise me to learn he flunked out here due to no effort, just expected NT to pass him for no work.... perhaps his HS had done that......
  9. ----Another "what if" is the late 1970's vote that SMU made against us. Baylor wound up being the ONLY private school in the Big-XII. What if we had we we been admitted (we had Fry with a good football program and Blakely with a good Basketball program at the time.). We no doubt would have improved and added to our programs.... so by the time the SWC came apart in the mid 1990's (aabout 15 years later) we would have been a giant in enrollment compared to Baylor and TCU and I don't think there is any doubt that our game attendence would have been good by then since we would have have a lot moe media interest by being a SWC university.. ---When the SWC came apart it was mostly about attendence and several schools corruption... Arkansas and UT were disgusted with filling the stands and the tiny privates contributing nothing plus so many of the others were not running clean programs and had a lot of bad press (including TCU)... . SMU was awful in corruption, Clements could not have saved them (despite the DWM articles's comments) in fact he was a big problem. Rice was a midget. Houston had the problems mentioned, TCU was also copnsidered very small in addition to their scandles as well. It would have down to us and Baylor I think and we were double their size asnd a state supported school.........Who knows what would have happened in that deal. That vote changed our athletic history. ---I hate SMU.
  10. ---Great comment... applies to everything... I don't care if people (especially my students) really like methat much, just respect me. More parents and teachers need to learn this and do what should be done. We would have a lot less problems in the world. My daughter sometimes grumbles when I mention football that way but there is a lot to be learned from competition in general. PS: ---Never give up!!!
  11. Red tailed...???? SMU is red... it is their fault... get revenge.!!!!
  12. ---Love the Bush comment...LOL... his dumb brother Neil was in Midland yesterday and a junior high kid asked him about him running for President. His response was to "Google my name in on the internet and you can see why I could never be elected" .... Good grief!!!, you would think he would just say he had no interest in politics rather than point out all his infidelities with prostitutes and others --plus his divorce mess---especially to a junior high kid. What a role model... so much for the Bush family values that they claim to have. He was also deeply involved in the largest savings and loan scandel, EVER, as well (Silverado). . ---No prediction... I have seen a lot of strange games... winning is unlikely but stranger things have happened... Remember SMU/TCU or the Texans defeating the Steelers with only 50 yards offense two years ago..
  13. ----Absolutely a good thing...... alot of people will hear the North Texas name and realize we are a major university......Almost every university would lose to UT and most would get stomped most likely. UT hammered Univ of Colorado 70-3 last year in the "BIG-XII CHAMPIONSHIP Game''. If we lose to UT, it is not the end of world-- most people would and would lose big.. How many people will hear about Lamar or UT-Arlington next week. About no-one!! They once had decent football programs but messed up and dropped it. ---Having said that... Good luck in Austin... Go North Texas.!!!!
  14. --- UTA officials really messed up, as did Lamar, when they dropped football.... Their name recognition has really declined since then... There are those that are really critical of us going to I-AA (wasn't exactly our decision) but the NCAA created it and the guidelines put us in it. At least our administration (regents?) made the right decision and we continued with a hope of getting back to I-A which we are. In Texas a school without a credible football program is not thought of very well unless it has extremely high academic standards and even that doesn't work very well. UT-Dallas sometimes has the highest SAT's in the state (Rice usually does) but not a lot of people outside of Dallas know anything about it. ---When I was a NT student during the 60's, both UTA and NT had almost exactly the same enrollment, about 13,000. We had an advantage status-wise and were more widely known because we were in high profile basketball conference (MVC) with Louisville, Cincinnati etc. UTA's advantage over us was a huge population that was located extremely close which kept their enrollment up. Since they dropped football we have really grown and they haven't so much in enrollment and I think dropped in Texas name recognition. Obviously you never hear the UTA name on sports during the fall and North Texas does make news/sports some. Football is important to student recruiting and to school pride and causes name recognition away from the Dallas area...even if we aren't in an elite conference. In West Texas I can't even remember the last time I heard the name UTA mentioned. North Texas is mentioned a lot and in the paper and on TV quite a bit. ---Success in football can be important as well. I can not even tell you how many UT shirts and and hats I have seen the past two days on the community college campus that I teach at. Very few of them will ever go to UT. Everyone loves big winners, and UT (sorry Emmitt) is one. This despite the fact TxTech is only 120 miles north of here..... [120 miles in West Texas is like down the street to those in the metroplex, distence means little to us]. See yawl at the SMU game (which 350 miles from here), I will be there . --Hope we can hold our own in Austin next week.... it would really get people's attention in this area (Southwest) if we did. NT has really gotten West Texas attention when they have defeated TxTech especially when Dykes was coach because he went to Tech from Midland. Why does UTA have a football thread...??? They want back into the sport but that is a tough deal to do now. Somthinng to think about... Buffalo has a horrible football program but we at least have heard of it.... without a football program I doubt we would recognize the name college-wise. --
  15. It seems that half of college clothing nowdays has is burnt-orange or white with a longhorn on it. At least it seems that way in West Texas. One look at most of them and you realize that have neverfinished ( maybe attended) any college.
  16. --He still gets to play again UT.... just not at OU....... He likely will get to enjoy "really losing big" to the Horns. Little known fact... at one time (about 1890 to 1900, I think when NT was established) Sam Houston State was the largest college in the state of Texas.
  17. ---I have always said to my kids that everyone needs to act 12 once in a while... 12 was fun, few responsibilities, but enough old enough understand what is going on and not care what people think about what you are doing. .The key is knowing when to act 12 and when to act older.... Some never learn.
  18. Funny story, Emmitt ---- I am always amazed by those (mostly kid but not all) who think money can fix anything...... Reminds me of a situation when I was in Paris airport with a student group and the air-controllers went of strike and we were told it might be a week before we could leave. A rather wealthy kid in the group told me to just call his dad and he could arrarnge to get a plane get us out of there... He just did not get it, even if you owned the plane it wasn't taking off.....LOL.....( about 10% were flying) . I found a plane with empty seats (planes could not land to transfer passengers either) so I arranged for their seats to Canada and got into DWF 6 hours late. I will take know-how over money. ---Careful with the words "shoot/chute". We semi-country kids understand the difference and a lot of us have experience shooting cows down a chute. Also being careful when you shoot. A policeman shot at me once when he thought I (college kid then) had broken in to where I was working.... I was the night employee maintaining refigeration equiptment and was supposed to be there. He was no kid but about 50 yr old. In today's world he likely would have been fired (not shot), but this was the 1960's, nothing much was done except getting chewed out. I saw him multiple times after that and I don't really think he enjoyed seeing me, I would always speak with a smile on my face.... LOL.
  19. Heard rumor that we play Miami (Fla) in 2007? Anyone know anything???/
  20. You probably are correct... they likely know.... but there still some concern.. whoever it is, is not so obvious to everyone else who is best choice.
  21. Looks like he just made the NFL..... maybe or maybe not at NE but somewhere.... If they don't keep him he could be traded (they are hurting for receivers now) or picked up if he is cut.... ---It would not surprise me to see Kevin Faulk traded and Cobbs kept.. he is 7 years younger. No doubt he would cheaper on the salary cap as well. ... Final stats: ATT YDS TD LG P. Cobbs 13 92 2 36 K. Faulk 6 38 0 16 H. Evans 8 16 1 7 C. Dillon 5 12 0 3 L. Maroney 4 12 1 5 M. Cassel 2 0 0 1
  22. ---Considering the present QB situation you would think that there would some really good potential QB recruits out there that would perceive this to be an opportunity to get three years of playing in. Not likely to get one that would be worthwhile a Freshman (next year) though. After all how many division I programs are there plus programs that is likely to provide 2 or more years of playing time. ---Granted last year was not very good but the previous three were and we are exposed to many top programs such as Texas etc. which would really get people's attention if he did reasonably well. ---Which is better for the recruit a program with multiple years of starting time or a program that is QB rich and may not ever provide an opportunity to play much if at all. ______________________ --This is not good, one Week from now we meet Texas and we don't seem to have a clue who the starting QB is.....ability-wise or health-wise.
  23. ----Decoy???? ---catch one and let them chase you the rest of the night. Besides we are assuming that our offensive line will give the who-ever QB time enough to throw.
  24. The last time they revealed the New Bevo..... Bevo XIII or whatever! Beginning that night the new Bevo and UT has a record of: 24-1 They lost to the then undefeated OU by 0-12 I wonder if there is any hope of them going 24-2 with this Bevo ??????? not likely I suppose. I guess the good news we only lost to them 65-0.... Colorado lost to UT 70-3 in the Big XII *TITLE GAME*, geezzzzz, also Baylor lost by 62-0, Kansas 66-14 and LaLa 62-0. If you look at that way, things aren't quite so grim.
  25. False alarm......I thought someone had picked us to defeat Texas...... What was I thinking????
