  1. That is correct... on practice squad at the moment it seems.. http://www.nfl.com/teams/rosters/MIA
  2. ---I accdentally posted... since I did I will add this. I don't accept defeat easily. I never accept that I can't do better when I am not satisfied with things that as they are. Neither should we. We are a major university.... and we are in Texas... a state with an huge amount of football talent out there. We should be able to do better than we are doing. ---Winning at the college level is mostly about 3 things... 1. recruiting, 2 motivating, and 3. coaching. We can do better and should not accept things as they are, especially when we know we CAN DO BETTER.
  3. this shows practice squad activity for Miami. http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFL/A...ami/default.htm This an NFL site for Miami.... Cobbs is listed http://www.nfl.com/teams/rosters/MIA
  4. ---I would not surprize me to see him appear on the active roster soon... their offense has not been too great and Minor has not appeared at all. Suggs played last week and I at first thought he might be deactivated for Cobbs.. Just guessing I know nothing really but Miami is 0-2 and may shake a few things up. ---Their schedule is Tennessee, then Houston, New England, the Jets and Green Bay. Could be some playing time for backups in that stretch.
  5. . Well at least he is not ALL wrong.....LOL...poor SMU........hahahahahahahaha!!
  6. --Good points Rick---- Coaching does make a big difference, but the community in general is important too. You mentioned Brownwood (My old hometown). Despite having several coaches before and after Coach Wood, they have had only had ONE losing season in the past 48 years. It has been along time since they have won it all but they still continue to be rated in the top 10 a lot of the time. They were once in top 20% size-wise of AAAA and now they are in the bottom 20% according to size. Their failure to win it all is a combo of size and coaching dropoff. I don't buy that wealth wins... although limited resources may cause failure. I would take the hard-working middle class that isn't afraid to sweat and is accustomed to work over the kids that don't need to. One of the reasons that Wood often won was that many of those kids he had --worked at very physical jobs (Rock Crusher, brick plant, construction, and farm work) in the summer and when time fall got here, they were in shape and the other teams faded late in the game while they were still producing. Excellent coaching then gave them the edge when other things were equal. Another odd thing he did was little full contact scimmage during the season--that reduced injuries and by the time Friday got here they were not bruised up or really tired, and were ready to HIT someone. We once had an idiot coach here in Midland that almost killed kids at practice and they mostly lost... they were too tired and beat up to play well by Friday nite.. Wood also played a lot of mind games such as telling kids to laugh, smile and have good time in the second half.... the other team was often dead tired and felt that they were going to lose.
  7. ---Things are lot different since the break-up of the SWC and the recent successes of our football program..... It even helps for us to be playing "name" programs and former SWC teams... even if we get blown out at times. We were mentioned a lot on TV last Saturday prior to the UT/ OSU game and our name showed up a lot on the screen on the helmets and jerseys shown during highlights. ---It reminds me of the old saying : "I don't care what you say about me, just spell the name correctly". --- Statewide we are no longer put in the box with East Texas, Stephen F., Sam Houston, and some of the others..... our name recognition has really improved outside of the metroplex. ---As for enrollement size I would just say that Houston and NT are almost identical in size and 3rd largest behind A&M and UT. The question now seems to be which semester and how do you count the enrollment, entension classes etc.??? It appearrs that we more students on the main campus than they do but they may have a few 100 more if you count remote campuses.
  8. ----Personally I am seeing things that I don't think were happening before. The offense looks more unpredictable and more balanced. The So.Miss. bowl game was the most disappointing game of all when we continued to attempt to run when they were stacking up the line and we would not try to throw to back them off. Our OCC record is not good but quite a few of the teams have been top-10 teams that most people would have lost to. Our OCC schedule is more difficult that what most Big-12 teams face... Their conference schedules are more difficult but except for last year we have won those. --- I have been impressed that we haven't seen so many stupid penalites as in years past. I remember one "unsportsmanlike conduct" call last game but that is much better.. so far. Teams that draw 15 yd penalities and have lots of turnovers lose..almost every time. That has really improved. To me the weakest link seems to be the offensive line.... the reason could the players, the competition so far, or the coaching... I have no idea.... there has not been a lot of holes to run through it seems.... hope it improves. Thanks for the SMU win...... Beat Tulsa and the rest of them.
  9. ---A&M was not permitted to attend bowl games for a couple of years during the mid-90's when some players there (from Dallas Carter) had summer jobs that paid them to do nothing but show up and play cards or whatever.. The coaches and athletic department had absolutely no knowledge of it but the entire team was penalized. ---In the Bush case, it had gone on for quite some time and the family had even moved into a very nice home for MONTHS. I would think someone at USC would have found out, they had time to learn about it. ---It may not seem right to punish them all but then again in life if one family member messes up the whole group pays for it somewhat. I thought the A&M situation was a bit severe but not in this case..... USC had time to learn about it and it should have been pretty obvious to many that something was wrong. ---This is even different that the Oklahoma situation... OU reported it and got rid of the kid. USC reported nothing but likely suspected or knew about it. The NCAA was not as mean to OU as they were to A&M. I guess reporting it was the difference but A&M had not discovered it yet and it was reported shortly after it started by someone. ---The SMU situation is completely different, Gov. Bill Clement who was involved the payoffs (maybe providing part of money) was directly connected to the university and even as spokesman of them. That was not the case at all in the Aggie situation and may not be at USC. Likely the basketball program at SMU was just as corrupt as the football one but was left alone..... the SMU basketball coach at that time was Dave Bliss---the same guy that brought Baylor their problems almost 20 years later. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/lies.html ---The one thing I think is wrong with the NCAA rulings is that penalities apply to the school and none to the coach even if he is at fault..... Neuheisal left Colorado a mess and then went to Washington and problems occured there as well... It has happened several times to other coaches as well.. -
  10. I wish the old rules applied to the final quarter.
  11. ---Patrick is showing up on Yahoo fantasy football as a Dolphin........with NA by his name which means he is "not active" ........ at the moment...... ---Apparently he has signed with them..... Backups there now are Suggs and Minor and Suggs was just added recently from the Browns and did very little last year (8 carries in 8 games, plus 4 rushing TDs in the entire 3 year career and none last year). Suggs did not appear in Miami's first game. I would not be surprised to see Patrick on the active squad soon because he can catch the ball out of the backfield and it seems their other backs lack that ability (combined they have only 3 TDs receiving and not a lot of catches)..... Good luck this time...This looks like the best situation yet.
  12. I have respect for you Southern Stang, but this addressed many others at SMU : __________________________________________________________ Until the SMU community changes their attitude toward others, they will get no respect from ANYONE nor do they deserve any. SMU attitudes are destroying your university. SMU is in a city of one million ( downtown Dallas) yet you have awful attendance… you have no support from the city at all, just the SMU community, and not even very good there. SMU can not recruit and it is getting worse. Most of the best athletes in Texas come from middle and lower income family and almost none of them want to come to SMU if they get an offer from anywhere else because they understand how they will be viewed… as inferiors and not equals….much more like the Southern slave system which valued them for what good they would do. -----It is NOT your Coaches’ fault they have no chance to win in this environment. SMU's attitude that the rules don’t apply to us caused the death penalty to be invoked during the 1980’s and partially contributed to the break-up of the SWC, that and low attendance by several schools including SMU, also no longer being competitive with the others. Ask any grad of a division I school in Texas who they detest the most and nearly all will list their big rival first and SMU second because of attitudes and disrespect shown by SMU. This is more personal but SMU is shooting yourself in the foot by not scheduling North Texas….. That game will fill you stadium or close to it and cause local interest.. It could help you… At this point I no longer care…. Just self-Destruct.. You kept us out of the SWC and changed our athletic history. Soon you will likely be in a conference with McMurry et. al. if nothing changes. _____________ I did not see it but heard there was an SMU sign or window painted with : CASH defeats TRASH .......what a classless lowlife statement, if true.
  13. Midland (350 miles west of Denton) Will join my son and about 6-10 more many of which usually go to game (including 3 Aggie grads) living in Dallas.
  14. ---You definitely went to SMU. You spell "University of North Texas" as NTSU. Either that or you haven't read a newpaper in over 25 years... of course that is assuming you can read!!!
  15. Ok... If we are a HS team then let us make SMU look like a junior high team. Miami and FSU played each other and neither of them had as many yards rushing as North Texas did... They had 4 and 5 yards each...... and no they did not pass well either Miami had less than 100 and FSU only about 175. Neither were playing the #2 team in the nation, we were.
  16. There were comments about the our lack of rushing yards: Florida State rushed for 5 YARDS against Miami Miami rushed for 4 YARDS against Florida. We had 8 YARDS against Texas. ( #2 and Defending National Champion) I am not sure this all means other than two ranked schools rushed for less than we did. Sort of interesting stats.. Neither of those were that successful passing either ---Miami had 99 and FSU 174.
  17. ----You seemed to be ashamed to be from North Texas... I am not. We have some very good programs and that magazine is not all that good at evaluation.. You need to read the criteria for evaluation. It is not allthat that great and even some are meaningless as to how good it is .... how did Princeton have a top tier law school listed when it did not even have a law school. It is a bunch of nonsense. I noticed the college in Texas with the second highest SATs is also listed very low... UT-Dallas... only Rice has higher SATS (sometimes) ... I repeat it is poor judge of schools. I think you listed the former SWC schools.... just because it was once a SWC college does not mean it is better. Same BCS non-sense we constantly face...You can bet the alma maters of the publishers are rated near the top. ---Maybe I was a bit rough on the Texas comment but I do not consider us or my education inferior and consider the rating insulting, especially when you look at some others listed with us which aren't even close.. I manage to hold my hold very well as do most other of our graduates (example, our alums have more Grammys than any college in America). I have a lot of pride in where I came from. The West-Texas and Texas comments were meant to be a bit funny.... VERY FEW OF WE LONG TERM TEXANS (my family was on the Western Texas frontier) are known have an ego or self-image problems and usually just say to He** with them anyway! Texas and North Texas seems to produce a lot of sucessful people... Ivy League, northern, or BSC school does not mean sucessful or well educated. The President once lived a 1/2 mile from me in Midland. I will not mention politics. The commander of the Iraq invasion (Gen. Franks*) was from Midland (and UT-Arlington) also. That wasn't a so-called tier-1 school, but he became successful. The first was successful because of who he knew and was more than the Yale education he received or anything else.. PS.. I tossed mine into the trash as soon as I received it along with the advertisements etc. * a cousin of mine was a HS football coach of Tommy and is sometimes mentioned in his speeches.
  18. ---Maybe not but TCU just won their 11th straight and half of the Baylor players had physical problems and cramps... Baylor wasn't physically prepared to play.
  19. ---What is wrong with Eagles... that is what is on my class ring.... not Mean Green. I think our mascot (Scrappy) is an Eagle as well, not a Green Blob. ---Other schools use two names as well including Georgia Tech (YellowJackets or Rambling Wreck) and Notre Dame (Fighting Irish and Leprecons) ...they played each other. Ever notice the Elephants on Alabama window stickers, that is their real mascot, not Crimson Tide.
  20. ----WE had very few problems compared to what Baylor had today... It seemed half their team had cramps or some physical problem. It was even a lot hotter in Austin than Waco plus I don't think the Baylor players had to sit for an hour or two on an un-airconditioned bus to start the day. (they were the home team).
  21. Can we convince them to come to our place and tear the entire stadium down????
  22. Stupid comments....... Cobbs did not do so well against Texas and now he is in the NFL..... Football is a team sport. Let Texas and North Texas exchange QBs and Colt McCoy would look a lot worse.
  23. Dear floudering Houstonian (probably grandparents weren't Texan: ---That magazine rating has little credibility.... The closer to New York you are the higher you rate. Alos if you read the criteria of the ratings you will understand it more. Private schools have as huge advantage I would think because one of the issues is alumini giving and that is really a focus of private schools by necessity. For one the average income of a family of a private school student is a lot higher than most public schools simply because they cost most and take more family resources to go there. Thre are alot of other goofy factors as well taken in consideration as well. --The nuttiest thing happened a few years ago (as reported by my wife's TTU magazine) that Princeton was rated as a top tier law school----------there is a small problem..... they did not have one, just a prelaw program....... Since then I think they have begun one. Tech was laughing about it because of their low law school rating which has a high rate of passing the bar exam, higher than some rated above them. ---Those ratings are a farce. I will bet the editors of the magaine all went to schools that are "highly rated"... It is worse than the situation with the BCS. __________________ ----As for myself (a West-Texan) I don't feel inferior to anyone and I will not let anyone tell me that I am. We are smarter, tougher, meaner, and more independent than almost every city-kid or person from somewhere else........LOL.......Be darned If I accept what they say as fact and lots of facts indicate otherwise. Maybe you should move out of Houston and be a real Texan. Why are all those yankee types bailing out of the north and moving to Texas and the South if everything is so good up there??? Ask any European to name one state and most will name Texas (recent survey). It is the one state's shape that most will recognize as well. ...Again the closer the college to NY (and the publisher) the higher they rate them..... look at it. Perhaps they havae an inferiority complex, it sure not present in West Texas. From a Texas family for over 125 years.
  24. FOX is an awful network..... news or sports. In news they come up a few facts and nutty conclusions. This is the network of Geraldo etc.
