  1. WHAT???.. the DMN is wrong.... ???? ... the world is about to end. ---The finals are not this weekend.. They will be Dec. 23. (according to the Midland Republican Telegram ( make that Midland Reporter Telegram) which is NEVER wrong.....Midland is Bush's home town..... supposedly...... so you know what we read is absolutely correct.
  2. .. I agree with Rick.... WE older folks know about Harbaugh but HS kids don't and some parents don't.... I would prefer someone better known in Texas....like Dodge....every HS player to be recruited has heard of Southlake and probably Dodge. Later on his North Texas reputation will matter more. ---#1 he needs to be able to recruit. ---#2 He needs to have good coaching skills. ---#3 He needs to have good relations with fans, media, and players. (good personality) ---#4 He need to hire good assistants. ---#5 I would prefer someone who is not immediately looking for a better positon and is rather happy here and will stay at least 4-5 years. (Texan?) __________ Go Brownwood.!!--- won three playoff games going for #4.
  3. ----Mojo ended Todd Dodge's HS QB days with a loss as Mojo defeated him in the state Finals.... I am sure he would like revenge.... however it is sounding like Mojo has stiffened after a opening drive TD by SLC and is frustrating them. Typical of West Texas teams... they usually get better as the game goes on and wear the other teams out.
  4. AIRPLANE ----was my first real word.... I was born during WWII and the fighter planes practiced straffing the wheat field next to where I lived...... woke me up all time P-38's were loud prop planes especially when they pulled up at the end of filed where our house was. .. Uusual is that #2 son came up with same word... lived 1/2 mile to a private airport during Midland oil boom duing late 70's and a couple of oil company Lear-jets were there and they woke him up 2-3 times a day. My word I will use will be my #1 sons first word--- because of all the construction during that oil-boom there were bulldozers, scrapers, concrete trucks, trenching machines, etc. across the street building houses and apartments --- again noisy and he could see them from his bed room. We just called them all --- --- TRACTORS --
  5. Yahoo: He will active for Jacksonville game this weekend. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-d...ov=ap&type=lgns
  6. --It is winter in West Texas. (Midland)....it is snowing and there are tumbleweeds blown upon against my garage door. (23 degrees today and 70+ yesterday))
  7. Marginally known in metroplex...??. Not among people that know anything about football.... I have heard of him for years... and I live in West Texas ( not a coach) . ---Every Coach and probably most high School seniors are familiar with his name...... and those are the guys you need to know when you trying to recruit. Not knowing Texas coaches has hurt a lot of coaches recruit. ---I can promise you one thing, mention Todd Dodge and Darrell Dickey and have them identify them and guess which one they know. If they miss both then mention Mack Brown... if they don't know that one that ignor the responce, they don't know anything about football anyway..
  8. Barnett... Oh no.... let's hire DD back.
  9. ---"The Afganistan of the West"...?? .... LOL That is pretty bad country but never heard it called that.... LOL ---Was in a mall yesterdy and it appears that several stores have a surplus of UT items.... it appears that they are not selling so well anymore..!!! In fact they had a pretty good sale on most of them. Too bad they are an awful color that goes with about nothing. Perhaps they could be used as camauflage clothing in Afganistan..... or maybe even in the Afganistan of the West.......LOL.
  10. ---Your season's over.??... have faith ( you are no West Texan, never give up) ... Miami has 5 wins including 4 consecutive wins.... there are only two wild card possibles with 7 wins and one of them is Denver which seems to be falling apart plus the other 6 win teams aren't very impressive at this point.... Miami still has a chance.... after all the Cowboys were two games down to the Giants and now they lead by one. Go Patrick. Make the most of the situation.....
  11. --CODE OF THE WEST: Don't shoot (block) someone in the back. ---Rick is correct, it is a safety issue. A running-back is likely moving forward anyway and is less likely to get hurt than someone who may be practically standing still and would likely be injured (legs, back) if hit from behind. Besides the RB is expecting to be "hit" and is prepared for impact from any direction at any time and will protect himself somewhat, a lineman and other person may not be, and can do little to help himself and prevent injury.
  12. ---When a person is released from a job especially a situation where they will be replaced... it should be done and they pack up and leave almost immediately before they can cause damage. It is entirely different from a situation when a job or program comes to an end. It should have not been announced until the end or at least the final week of the season. Don't give the employee time to do "things" that could be harmful. Doesn't our business school teach that?
  13. I don't anyone similiar to Kathy Ireland in the second movie. Question: Was Kathy in the large cast picture with the unknown Dillo in front or was she missiing.... or I am just blind.
  14. ----Bama would have lynched Fran by now if he had not left for A&M.
  15. ---Permian is not the Permian of old.....yet anyway. Mojo's coach has been there two years and is a grad of Permian. I (from Midland) will be surprised if they can pull it off. ...Now if one of those West Texas northers (and wind storms) show up then the odds will change...... need a bit of blowing dust too and Lubbock has plenty of that.
  16. --Shocking isn't it.... LOL... ----If he decides to leave the HS ranks he will eventually be a success where-ever he goes..... ( if he can hire good assistants with the budget given him )
  17. ---Interesting comments from the UNT announcers during the Monroe pointed out that a lot of Monroe starting and first reserve linemen were from the Metroplex. Never should Monroe out recruit us... which is pretty much what they were saying without saying it. That seemed to be our weakest area this year.... (besides the obvious choice of who to start at QB. With a better line then even that might obvious.
  18. --I hope you are kidding.. I teach a lot of them in my summer classes ( at a community college) and I have never seen that attitude from them ... in fact a few summers ago I had one UNT student that had them shaking their head because he finished test in less than half the time as the rest of them and was making an "A" everytime. He did not hurt the UNT image any. I also have One Aggie son and his buddy that regularly attends UNT games (they live in Dallas) with my other son, a UNT comp-sci grad. We may well be well below A&M athleticly (thanks to SMU and their opposition to us being SWC and CUSA over the years) but otherwise we definitely aren't. Many of Aggies son's comp-sci profs had degrees from UNT. ---No one can make us feel inferior except us , but some here seem to have that oppinion and seem to be worried about it. At least once during each summer session I wear an UNT shirt to let them know where their prof came from... and no I don't give all A's or even passing grades usually. I am not Uncle Scrooge and I am not Santa Claus. Most comment that is is nice to a math prof that actually speaks English instead some other language and are near impossible to understand. (that is why many take math/sciences classes at community colleges in the summer, a lot of mine had dropped at Tech or A&M because they did not have a clue what they were hearing and the instructor did not know what he was really doing) Freshman/Sophomore profs at mega universities are often grad students (sometime foreign) teaching their first class (I was once one, but Texan) and not a prof that has taught for years and knows what they are doing. ---As I have said earlier I support every Texas team over out of state universities (except SMU which has done "evil" things to us). I am amazed by those who would support a Calif. or Yankee school over fellow Texans...
  19. ----This entire situation explains why coaches should not be "Let Go" until the season is over or until the final week. None of this would have happened had nothing been announced until after or during the final week, which in this case would have a holiday week involving a road game. . ----The same applies in business and elsewhere, once a person is fired it is usually better to be effective immediately instead of having them hanging around causing problems. ---Don't feel too sorry for DD, he is walking away a pretty good pile of money. Coaching is a tough profession with little job security and they all are aware of it when they enter it.
  20. ---I don't suits are absolutely important but sloppy dress should be banned. The N.E. head coach (Belicheck, can't spell it) looked like he was wearing something he would wear doing yard work or camping. Weather should be a consideration but that was awful. In hot weather, a team knit shirt or shirt and tie is fine. Landry did not always wear a suit or blazer but often did. The most extreme in dress was Hank Stram (Chiefs, Dallas Texans, Saints) who always looked like he had just walked out of Nieman-Marcus etc. --Basketball is entirely different... it is played inside and not in rain, cold, heat, snow, etc.
  21. ---After hiring the head, there needs to be money left to hire good assistants. An expensive head with poor assistants would be a bad situation. It is not all about who the head coach is.
  22. This is Spike Dykes third season at Texas Tech (with mostly his recruits) He had been there part of one fall until he took over from David McWilliams about Thanksgiving. Before then he had spent several years at Midland Lee and other West Texas high Schools. Would you accept this results? 1989: 9-3-0 Texas Tech Coach: Spike Dykes W Arizona W New Mexico W Oklahoma St. L Baylor (TX) W Texas A&M L Arkansas W Rice (TX) W Texas W Texas Christian W Southern Methodist (TX) L Houston (TX) W Duke (NC) --- All-American Bowl (AL) He was 6-4-1 his first year, 5-6 his second year and the Tech had been 4-7 and 7-5 the two prior years. He coached at Tech 13 years plus a couple of games prior to that when McWilliams decided to return to his alma mater, UT. Dykes had only year with less than 5 wins (he won 4), Univ of Miami and Ohio State was on their schedule that year plus the usual SWC games.
  23. --They don't hate him... just the fact that he wins all the time. ---I am sure any AAAAA HS coach would recommend him for the NT job..... just to get rid of him at the HS level..... LOL..
  24. ---Great post----hope most people read it, especially those who think a HS coach should not be hired.... A lot of what he said reminds me a lot of what Gordon Wood was saying when coaching at Brownwood.... He also gave motivational speeches at times. ---Some the more interesting comments were 1. Kill their will to win... Wood often had his players laugh, smile, whatever, during the 4th quarter to make the other team think they were still having fun while the opponent was dead tired and bend over. 2. He also had players pop up immediately after a play and head back to the huddle (no mouthing) --avoids a lot of stupid penalities. 3. "Never give up" is very important but equally important is the fact your opponent knows you will not give in and that you will fight to the end. I have seen a lot of them just fold in face of that, in gets into their head that they are going to lose. 4. Wood paid a lot of attention to details and spent a ridiculious amount of time on special teams-- kicking, returns, punts, punt blocking, short yardage, etc. A huge percent of plays in a game involve special teams--- not just the usual offense and defense. --Dodge knows how to win and does not like losing.. Wood did too, he won state nine times.
  25. In that case the black jerserys won...
