  1. --CNN... McCaffrey who is on with Blitzer is pretty much to the left .... The guy on at about 6:00 is definitely no Bush-lover (name escapes me at the moment). Thinks he has made a mess of Iraq, immigration, budget deficits, and exporting jobs. --- Fox is horrible ( my opinion). They may be fairly good at the truth but when it comes to the whole truth they have a real problem. They are very selective in what they report. Some of their people are ok but several tend to just talk over prople when they don't like the answers or word questions that are loaded to make certain people look bad.... Such as "When did you begain to think like a sociallist? if they want a person to look bad. They can get rather ridiculous..... They might pass as entertainment but not as credible newscasts.
  2. Agree--- Deep Green started it ( note my reply to his comment ) ---- LOL plus I love taking "cheap shots" at SMU. _________ I am in higher education (Mathematics instructor, Physics, History minor) -- Just thought I would follow up on that.!! This is on topic....------ LOL
  3. True.. I amend it.... since the Civil War........ however Houston had been a Jacksonian Democrat when governor of Tennesee and when serving as a Senator from Texas was considered a Democrat. .
  4. ---Every Governor of Texas was a Democrat until Bill Clements.... ( except the one forced on us during Reconstruction ) ( Wasn't that SMU grad a real prize and honest man?? "We are cleaning up the program"!! Shortly before being given the death penalty....) Sorry ........ I couldn't resist either.... LOL
  5. --Mathematics instructor at local community college.... Also own some ranch land...family has operated it for over 100 years.
  6. --I hope some of his staff does have college coaching experience although I see nothing wrong with these selections.
  7. ---What you are proposing is pretty much what NCAA basketball once was. It was 24 teams with 16 playing a first round, with the "best" 8 getting a bye. ---I agree very much with you... I would like to have a 12-team playoff (4 start with a bye) with at least 9 conferences represented and no conference would have more than two members in the playoff [ Basketball once did that when they went to 32 teams ] . The Holiday bowl system could still exist but would pick teams not involved in the 12 team playoff system. After trying this then consider going to a maximum 16 teams. ( both would take 4 weeks to complete ) ---I wonder if Stoops still thinks he played the #10 team (Boise State )?? ...LOL... Guess OU isn't a top 10 then. ---These BCS coaches really need to wake up and look at the NFL players some. ( some of the media needs too also ). There are lots of outstanding NFL players that did not play on BCS teams and some are even QBs, WRs, and RBs. That should tell them something (if they can think at all).
  8. ----It would be good for them, maybe us, if the program was Boise and we could compete well with them . (not the others) --- you are saying they get little attention the Mountain Time Zone and that the South/Southeast area teams does get a lot more attention.... We need to stay out of the WAC.
  9. --- I like the last line.!!... people do not pay much attention to the teams in the Mountain Time Zone ....Stay out of the WAC... think about it.
  10. ---The WAC at the moment has a couple of good teams but the rest pretty much on the same level as the Sunbelt. Travel would be more expensive and with the Belt we play teams intermingled with the ACC, SEC, Big-East, and CUSA and get more attention than we would in the Mountain Time zone and beyond. I prefer the Belt over the WAC... the Belt will get better, doubt the WAC will. Basketball and minor sports would kill us financially in the WAC. ---CUSA would be the best for us because of the number of regional (especially Texas) opponents. It would create more fan and media interest in us...(cheaper travel expenses as well) . I really don't think that the current CUSA is much better than Belt however. Note: --- 50% of the 12 CUSA teams won half or more of their games..... 50% of the 8 SunBelt teams won half or more of their games.....44% of the 9 WAC teams won half of their games or more.
  11. ----Article listed above states Strock is gone from Florida Int. I had missed that one. ---The Minnesota coach did not have a great year anyway but the 31 point comeback by our fellow Texans at Tech did him in. I can't imagine how he and his team must have felt after the game and the following day.
  12. ---- I remember watching Utah beat the absolute tar of A&M that year in the opening game... The Aggies looked awful... They were not very good but they were not as bad as Utah made them look. ---- The Utah QB that year was Smith... now the QB of the 49ers. ---- Utah deserves lots of credit but their coach left the following year. Can't remember who it was.
  13. --Two great plays.... way to go SMURFS.
  14. -----Another anchor ( Tatum Hubbard, and a former Miss Texas ) did a "bit" on Caris about Thanksgiving and asked for locals to vote for her. [ provided the website ] I live in the CBS-7 viewing area and saw it. I feel sure most votes came from UNT and the GMG-board but Odessa/Midland area did contribute votes as well. I think I remember a news item also appearing in the local Midland newpaper when the voting was going on and probably it appeared in the Odessa one also -- which I don't read. I suspect a lot of Odessa alums and friends were voting as well. Her winning definitely has appeared in Midland paper since she won... ----- More good UNT publicity to go with all the articles appearing about Todd Dodge going to UNT.. --Adler --do you live near Odessa???.. thought you might since you knew of the TV "bit".
  15. ---Some younger people sort of understand, most don't.... After he and some others enrolled at NTSC crosses were burned on President Matthews' lawn and for quite some time sidewalks and other places were spray painted in protest. UNT kept it pretty quiet and not much of the events managed to not make the news ( George Wallace and Un. Alabama was the same year). Matthews managed to not publicize the protests which was very good on his part and for UNT or NTSC). Work crews were up every mourning early cleaning up those remarks. The KA incident was mentioned but that was one day by a few idiots..... not almost everyday for a year or two knowing that most people was wishing he would just go away. Big difference. Perhaps you know... most younger people don't..... even then it is hard to understand the environment as it was then if you have never been there. I wasn't either but did see some similiar things as a kid, just not at UNT. ---I am very proud of what UNT did... it was the right thing....no one in the former SWC can say the same. Fry (at SMU) was the first in the SWC to take action in the mid 1960's, about ten years later. .
  16. ---Nothing I have said has been to harm Andrew Smith... he made a fatal error... I just don't see him as the most worthy person to have a high-profile item named for him... Joe Greene and Abner Haynes are far more worth in my opinion. The problem the younger members here don't truly realize what they have done and how much they have been a credit to OUR university. Both have brought a lot of positive attention to us... Abner was not so popular at the time but North Texas did the right thing and allowed blacks into the athletic program... The SWC wasn't... nor was ACC or SEC. We stood out and a lot of our younger members do not really understand what that meant. Greene is our best nationally known athlete EVER. ---The religion comment is a very cheap shot.... I am not attending a Baptist Church but instead a Presbyterian one, not that it matters. I have German name and my family made Beer during Prohibition (most German families did) but for personal use not for sale (no one seemed to care, I actually think it was not illegal to make smalll amount for personal use). I consume pretty much as Europeans do... maybe more than most people but not all of Saturday night. Europeans in general drink quite often but most look down on those who drink way too much... actually legal penalties for intoxicated driving in Europe are much more severe than in America. ---I just think the suggestion sends a bad message.... there are a lot of other good people who have been at UNT that have nothing named for them. For what it is worth... he wasn't the only player that contributed to our Bowl win.. so did Cobbs, Brewster and many more. ---Maybe I have lost respect... if so, I don't care.... I still think Greene and Abner Haynes are far more deserving. I have never been afraid to speak up for what I believe... When you get my age you likely will remember times that you wish that you had spoken up for what you believed instead of accepting what was happening..... I do. ---Twenty years from now which of the above will be remembered the most for their accomplishments, especially outside of the UNT community??? UNT-1966
  17. --Why not Joe Greene field.... He was an all-American (have we ever had another). He was a fine person. He went to the NFL where he was an all-pro many times.... he played on Super Bowl teams..... He is our only NFL hall of Fame member and if it were not for him would we be called the "Mean Green today?...... It seems like he deserves it and has been a great role model and even one of the most popular TV commercials of all time features him... ---I would rather honor him.... or even Abner Haynes for all that he did include break the color-line in Texas division I colleges... almost 10 years before the SWC accepted integration..... He went through a lot that most of us don't understand or know about. You younger members have no clue what he went through.... plus he also was a stand-out player in professional footbal. Both of these men seem like far better candidates.... To answer one post..... the DD suggestion seems crazy to me as well. Like I said when I first posted... I knew this would not be popular with everyone (especially the younger members) but I am never afraid to speak how I feel.... I think the other two (and older) names I mentioned are far more deserving.
  18. Read the above statement by me .......
  19. ---I am not trashing him at all but I don't think it is a great idea to name something after him.... We have all done stupid things...but it seems inappropiate to name some major item after him knowing the history of his unfortunate death.
  20. Agree with the car accident but there is more to it ---as the result of being in College Station with his buddies earlier that night and doing what... (so his friends said and medical report said) ??? http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=18...&type=story
  21. ---I understand we have a lot Tech haters here ( not me I am a West Texan with a Tech-grad wife) but what they did was remarkable and I am supprised that no thread was created that mentioned it. Like it or not, TxTech is almost never out of a game [ 20 point come-backs are common ] and they are exciting to watch. ---I hope we will be as well in the future. ---I guess a lot of yawl disagree with me but when any Texas team wins a bowl game it can be slightly helpful and can draw attention to us... It points out how outstanding football is in Texas. I see UT won a tough game as well...and TCU won a blowout. We all have "TEXAS" in our school name. .. ---Perhaps the title of this thread is not so accurate after all. The Aggies looked pretty bad the rest of the Texas and Okie teams [Tech, Texas, Okie State ] are doing pretty well..... as well as one of our Sunbelt teams, Troy. ---CUSA has looked the worse... 0-4.
  22. ---This comment may not be accepted well here but.. didn't he die as the result of illegal drug use???
  23. --I agree.. ---That was extremely generous of Royal.... Personally I think that the visiting team should should always be entitled to no less than 10% of the gate and maybe even 20%... That would be a lot more than we currently have been receiving from UT and OU. --- It could be good for fans also because they would want to schedule games that would fill the stadiums or at least close to it and would slow down some of these across-country games that are sure to be blow-outs and have fans grumbling.
  24. ---Your experiences with SMU alums much have been better than mine.... Most that I know have a "God I'm good" attitude. --- I won't sent a a package in the mail that ticks.... digital clocks don't tick.
  25. HO, HO, HO and Ho...!! --not original by me -- heard it on TV.
