Extra Notes From Cbs Sportsline Story
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to Peacock's topic in Mean Green Football
---I agree with your comment...... He had lived in Dallas a long time as a coach with the Cowboys and was the Head-Coach at A&M during the 60's and I think he had too much memory of the past and not thinking about the current situation. During the era he coached in Texas, the SWC was THE conference in Texas and we were not in it and "thanks" to SMU were not admited during the Fry era. The situation is now completely changed. The SWC is gone and there a lot of universities in Texas that are not in THE conference anymore. Then we and UTEP were pretty much ignored (note their win/loss record in the era before the SWC break-up also) We can easily compete with SMU, Rice, Houston, TCU, and UTEP now and we are much larger than every one of them except Houston. Baylor may be in the Big-XII but they are near the bottom and regularly take a beating so we can get as much respect as they do as well. --We just need to get our act together and I personally think hiring Dodge was the first step and it has created more fan and media interest. Now we need to win especially against some name (even other Texas) teams and hopefull get a better stadium. --- I respect Stallings but I think he missed this one, beside the SWC had just disappeared when he made his comments and the Belt was just getting started. Things have changed... This past season showed that the Belt is not a lot different than CUSA... To us CUSA would provide more regional opponents but other than that it is NOW not a great deal better with a lot of small universities. ---I hope you read the Rice post on another thread when someone trashed us and the Belt--- then the next Rice "poster" reminded the others that Troy which clobbered them in a bowl game [41-17] was a Belt team. Rice was the #2 CUSA-West team behind Houston. -
What a sleeper.... You joined in 2003 and you posted for the first time today... welcome aboard.

Excited About Our Recruiting Class So Far
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to BonfireBrian's topic in Mean Green Football
--- You also might note that North Texas had the first accredited computer science college program in America and that there are a lot of those jobs a few miles away in the North Dallas/Richardson area. There are a lot of other great programs at UNT as well. There are days I wish people would just forget we have music and education departments... we are a great deal more than that although we have exceled at those two areas as well. -
Excited About Our Recruiting Class So Far
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to BonfireBrian's topic in Mean Green Football
---Some of recruits realize they may not get a lot of playing time elsewhere and really don't think they have NFL possibilities so they prefer to play where they can play or excel. No doubt a few pick schools because of location or academic reasons... [ Yes we do have some programs that are better than A&Ms and many others ] There is always the girl-friend and buddy factor as well plus a few honor the tradition of family of where they went. ---It always amazes me that several recruits would select Utah, Nevada, etc. where their friends and family would almost never see them play ... the exception might be a high profile program such as Notre Dame or USC. ---Interesting fact -- We have one player in the NFL Hall of Fame (Joe Greene).... the exact same amount as A&M (Lary) and Baylor (Singletary) and more than Rice and TxTech who have none. SMU has several but only one that attended college after 1960 (Dickerson) and the same is true for UT (Campbell) and TCU (Lilly). -
---There are some nice BLACK ones...... LOL ---Note the symbol at the top of page: -- The old star one, not the newer Eagle one. (as shown on most hats.. The color shown is so bad on my computer that it is possible that some of thosse are the newer color.

---I voted for Brewster since offensive lineman rarely get there due and the above stated it all plus he started FOUR years, BUT Booger was the most interesting to watch and the UT comments (Mack Brown) after their game against Booger said it all about him. Simms and been sacked 8 times and Booger was in their backfield all night. He was not a happy camper after NT shut them down the lst 2.5 quarters. Both would have been NFL players if they had been larger, ability was not a problem, size was. ---Love the video of Booger against ?MTSU? .
-
--- We are all completely normal, well at least I am. I do however question the normality of Quoner and also Plum who can create a novel on what could be a short story... LOL ---Future of site... don't know... hope no one shoots me for what I post..( I am 300+ miles away, hopefully safe) I seem to be able to incite riots here. (no one ever accuses me of not speaking my mind and just saying "yes-sir". Typical 60's grad. ---Athletic future.. it will continue to improve... The best thing to ever happen to NT was the break-up of the SWC. Until them NT and UTEP were the outsiders and pretty much ignored... now there are several of us who are not in THE conference and seeking attention from media and fans. It will also improve because of student growth (therefore Alum growth) and the fact that "Dallas" is getting closer every day...... We are way down in Basketball from what we were in the 60's and 70's. in the MVC and under Blakley later.

Morgan Informed Thursday To Look Elsewhere
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to GreenBat's topic in Mean Green Football
--If they just pulled it without reason... they are rats....... If they had told him what his SAT scores had to be to get the scholarship and he didn't make it then that is a different story. Also he should have taken the SAT much earlier if and and then that would not have been a problem. ---It is reasons like this that coaches should try to reserve a couple back until signing day because you just don't know who might suddenly become available for various reasons. -
Interesting Post Regarding Dickey's Recruiting Classes
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
--Seems to be a rather disconnected post... ---One of my personal phrases is: "Expect nothing and you will likely get nothing". TD will have high expectations of his team. That is also how I perceived Hayden Fry (fellow West-Texan)..... he always expected to win or at least be very competitive. I am not sure that has been the case lately. TD is accustomed to winning and will not accept losing very well. He has won regularly even when he was in HS. ---Recruiting: Every coach in Texas knows who he is and how well he has done and most kids that play HS football do also. ---Discipline... I can't answer about off the field but on the field things have been terrible. We have had players commit lot of unsportsmanlike penalties ( and other dumb penalities) and they were not even pulled off for even one play or apparently anything done about it. Most winning coaches get irate about "stupid" penalties and even sometimes about routine ones that hurt the teams effort. A few penalties sometimes make some sense, interference to stop an interception for example, but not what we have seen. ---HS stadiums may may gotten ridiculous but some make a lot of sense. Abilene's stadium is home to two high schools, three colleges and located on their fair grounds. San Angelo's is actually owned by their college and two HS use it regularly in addition. Midland's is owned by the city and shares the parking lot with the AA minor league baseball team and is used for several community events. Odessa... school owned and is an absolutely football crazy town and often full, 15-20,000. Odessa had to build it to replace an old smaller beat-up one that was located on community college land who needed their land for expansion of academic buildings. Brownwood's is independently owned and is home to a college team as well. All of these places rent them out to several area teams to use throughout the season and likely bring people into town which helps local merchants/restaurants.. -
Your 1st North Texas Football Game ?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
--Perhaps you would enjoy this site.... Football records all colleges including UNT. http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia_team_index.php HEB's ... there are a few in West Texas.... (Midland) I don't ever remember seeing one in Dallas.. my three "kids" live there. -
Your 1st North Texas Football Game ?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
1964--- My first -- West Texas State ( West Texas A&M) now. Don't remember much about it but we lost 13 -21 . --- I remember several from the next year (1965) .... Tulsa and Louisville especially.... They were "pass" happy games and our best receiver was John Love.. both of the opposing QBs made the NFL. Our QB was Carlin. --- My favorite was 1988 in Lubbock which we came from behind and won 29-24. It was my first in-person game since graduation (I live in West Texas) and my wife is a Tech grad. All my kids were there with me. It was a fun game with the amazing comeback. -
Nt Provost, Howard Johnson, To Leave Position

Re Crow: Probably pretty bad... My cat will eat almost any bird in sight (loves doves, which he catches regularly) except those noisy black grackles. I have shot some with a pellet gun and the cat will not touch the things. [ they sort of look like crows ] They must be bad if a cat won't even try to eat it. -
Reggie Bush
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to UNTLifer's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
---This seem to be forgotten but this did was an issue when Houston did not draft Bush... They did not want any bad publicity which they feared might result from this. This wasn't the only issue,,, team needs and the fact that they feared he would be subborn to sign was also a problem.... They apparently did offer him a contract prior to the draft (they could since they drafted #1) but he turned it down and wanted more. --- Sure enough, this issue is back again... -
---Most Italians as individuals do not like to be identified with the Mafia and would not consider that funny.... That might fly like a lead balloon.

This is January.... no games until late August....... that is several months.

----The Reason for the crazy one-year Card/Pitt merger was WWII and that both teams had very few players left... They were in the military or doing other defense related jobs. By the Fall of 1945, the WWII had just ended and the two teams attempted to go back to normal operations. --- As kid during the 50's the NFL was not all that popular, at least in Texas, TV started becoming commonplace during the mid 50's and things began to change... slowly. . (at least in Texas). The closest team to Texas may have been Chicago (the Cardinals and Bears were in Chicago then). I knew no one that watched or listened the NFL regularly but they did watch college football, even though I actually knew one Cardinal player (Gray). When the AFL started and Dallas Cowboys came into existence (1960?) everything changed and it really changed when Dallas played Green Bay for the NFL championship in 1966... Super Bowl I also occured that season, Between Green Bay and the Chiefs or Raiders. No one paid much attention to it, they had to the Dallas/GreenBay game played in Dallas........ the next year... the ICE BOWL...played at -11. in Green Bay.... unbelievable...

Cam Montgomery In Class At Unt Right Now?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreengdub's topic in Mean Green Football
---Maybe he can't afford to attend North Texas without a scholarship and the one we offered him would not become effective until next semester. He may be working to collect some cash or to buy some transportation also. Not everyone has the resources to attend college without financial help. ---Don't the "rules" now require students to pay for 15 hours whether or not they enroll in 15 hours or not. ( a lot of state universities do this now) Once students often would work and take 6-9 hours. That is not possible at NT now is it? -
Dickey Sees Many Positives At Usu
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreenEngineer's topic in Mean Green Football
--- "Dickey Sees Many Positives At USU" --- --- NT Sees Many Positives with Dickey being at USU --- -
---His father, Britt Hagar, played Linebacker on some very good Odessa Permian teamsbefore he went to UT. After UT he played in the NFL for several years. It may not mean much but he has a very good football history, and they like to win.
-
---There have been two Dallas Texans.... The first one occured during the early 50s and later became the Baltimore Colts. I don't think they were an NFL team when in Dallas but a part of that League group joined the NFL (Cleveland Browns was one of them. 49ers may have been). I can't remember the name of that failed league. ...American something... The second Dallas Texans was an AFL team owned by Lamar Hunt and they did move to KC and became the Chiefs (Abner Haynes was on this team).... Later the AFL merged with the NFL when the entire AFL became the AFC. Cleveland, Baltimore, and Pittsburg was also moved to the AFC to even up the size of the two conferences. ---There have been other pro-football leagues since including the World Football and Extreme Football one, but they financially failed and none of those teams became NFL teams...... but several of their players did go to the NFL individually.

---Maybe he wants to be retired (nothing sad about that) and doen't want to be full-time anything. Also when I was at NTSU we had had three guys in the math department that passed around the chairmanship... they all prefered to teach instead. For what it is worth I am doing the same as Pohl... I have two (sometimes three) college classes.... I don't really want any more to do, but I enjoy the interaction with students and having something productive to do a couple of days a week. Being an administrator can be very confining and takes a lot of time if you do the job properly.

---It has been a while but Beasley Reese (from Temple) was a walk-on for Hayden Fry during the mid 70's... he was later given a scholarship and after graduation went to the NFL (undrafted) and made the Cowboys then to the Giants then to Tampa Bay. I think he played 10-12 years as a defensive player mostly in NY. The last I heard of him he broadcasting sports for (CBS?). ---It is very possible that walk-ons can be very good. A lot of good players are missed, sometimes because of size and sometimes because they haven't fully matured by the end of HS. Some make up the difference in size with desire and the mental ability to understand the game..... which may be overlooked when recruiting but becomes very obvious when working with them personally..

---Texas Legislature just getting started. You need to check to see what bills have been introduced. The real problem is not so much "has it been approved" , which I think it once was, but "has it been funded" which needs to appear in the proposed state budget.. ---Our wonderful guys two years ago did not not even pass a budget (actually the legislature did but I don't think the Law School made it ) but it did not matter anyway since our even more wonderful governor chose to veto it and the state operated without a budget for a while (a full year) and public schools did not have the funds need to operate properly. ---Unfortunately for education , he is back....

Unt Lands Pair Of Running Backs
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
---JC players can sign now so it appears that Montgomery is ours. Will he be sophomore or Jr eligibility next year? ---It is ideal to have good recruits in place 2 or 3 years behind projected starters... They will be ready to start when the others graduate and at the same time not have players unhappy with their playing time as is the case often with players that are only one year behind the starters. JC transfers are a bit different since they have not been on campus until a year or two into their college careers. ---Glad to see that our recruiting appears to be much more active that in recent past years... ---I like the second part of the share the load comment: ' They know when they need to run and when they need to pass." --- That will be a change from "the run is not working well, so let's us run some more" style of offense. as displayed in the So.Miss bowl game and many others.
