Mean Green 2007 Fb Schedule Finalized
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
---This is not rocket science. Wasn't the '05 and '06 schedules exactly opposite on conference games... ?? Now we add Western Kentucky and we need to split up the Florida travel so they start over for '07 and '08. The conference schedules are worked up in pairs (two years at a time) without paying much attention to the previous two years.... It works out in the long run. Yes we have one home game in the first five.. BUT SMU is not that far away so is almost like a home game as far as fans are concerned (except for kids in dorms without transportation). ---I wish we could show up with 20,000 at SMU... did you see the basketball turn-out by our "rabid" students for a team that just won 20 games and is moving on and has a chance to get to the NCAA. tournament..??.... AWFUL..... I am no longer optimistic about that SMU attendence any more. I make a couple of football games every year from 325 miles away and they can't even walk across campus.... disgusting... if they have exams or whatever due the next day..... ok ....but most just stayed home or went to the all-important Greek meeting. ---Several teams now owe us return visits, they will appear in the future... have faith. ---Ever get the feeling I am tired of HEARING from various sourses (and in person) about how poorly UNT students and alums support the university ?????? Maybe we don't need a new stadium if that is all the support we can muster up in a fine basketball building for a very meaningful game..... -
---Well there is another reason the non-Greeks have little respect for Greeks at times. It nearly always seems that is all about you and and your group and not the university you attend. I have no idea what your activity was but I notice it wasn't explained. I wasn't a Greek, could not afford it really, but my daughter was when she attended NT and my sons joined at another university and one finished at UNT but did not join the UNT branch because he did not think his personality fit in with the NT group after he attended a couple of meetings. I am sure I am not talking about all members -- but as a group yawl messed up. It also partially explains why membership is so small in frats as it was when I was student ...attitude... not so much true with the females.. ---For what it is worth yawl were not the only ones that failed to show... attendence is far worse than it was 30-40 years ago.... with a college enrollment of about 1/2 the size. . Is it Greek week at Texas? that game was packed (on TV). If you want your degree to be respected show repect to your university and help improve its image and attend university functions... we get widespread criticism in Texas because of the apathy shown to athletic events... you will learn after graduation if you don't already know. UNT-66 From my hometown" HPC vs McMurry (girls basketball... last weekend:. Both colleges have about or less than 1500. Howard Payne Lady Jackets prevailed 49-40 over No. 10 McMurry to claim the American Southwest Conference women's basketball championship on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,850 fans at Brownwood Coliseum This really makes us look bad....... 3850

Probably you will see a reverse next year... most conference schedules are set as two year flip-flops and maybe 07 & 08 are the flip-flops.... adding Western Kentucky changed up some things as well. It was mentioned about the FAU and FIU change so we dont have two Florida trips in one year. -

Thanks to Harry et al. hmmm ----Maybe you could take a shot at the NT students at their lack of support for the basketball team that just won 20 games (a big deal) and recently won a playoff game at home with poor attendence... Student bodies of a major university should support athletics better than that. [ look aroundat others] If they want our university to be better recognized and I don't just mean athletics, then they need to support our programs better in order to get noticed. Athletics is the best and easiest advertising any university has... ---- just an idea. UNT-66 [ been around awhile ] -

--Two open dates.... Sept. 15 and Nov 3. ..........long season with 12 games... Two weeks to prepare for Navy which give the band time to get together a good Veterans's day program (if they will), Tough September.. -
--Campus students could watch it on TV??? That should never happen unless it was nearly a sell out.... that cuts into attendence. A radio broadcast is ok.... Not TV for locals when we need butts in seats.

--The NIT was a joke in that period..... I think every team they invited (eight I think, all games played in NY) was East of the Mississippi (most in the far East) .... it was sometimes insulting called the EIT.... Eastern Invitalional. Most had worse records than UNT and many Western teams. The final pick for the NCAA was apparently between Kansas and UNT for our region (so we heard). We had the better record and a couple of reallly good wins but they got the bid and had a longstanding reputation of being good.. Things in the NCAA were actually done on the regional level and not like now but the regional names still exist today. ---It is dificult to judge that schedule years later.... some that are not so good now were very good then.. Some are exactly as it looks (Austin). WTSU was very good and had a player that later played for the Celtics with Bird.

---Not that is matters but South Alabama has lost their last THREE games (they said two).... after winning thirteen straight... This tournament is wide open. -
---I was proud of our basketball win against LLU last night and the tournament looks wide open with 5-6 teams as possible winner...BUT.... I was really disappointed at the turn-out by fans... especially students who are on campus. They need to realize to sports success and fan support is one indication of being considered a major university. Attendence was much better when we were much smaller ( even in the 60's when we had 13,000 students) ....someone on campus need to get students involved somehow and wake them up... Meanwhile the Texas/A&M game on TV was likely turning people away from the door.... students should realize what this means other than just rankings. We just won 20 games for the first time in nearly 20 years --- to get respect in the state as a university (not just in sports) we need student support especially plus more alum support.

Doubt About Future Of Cusa ?
SCREAMING EAGLE-66 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
---I do agree that Baylor was the better team to pick as a Big-II member over TCU.... but my point was which would you rather be now... a successful winning team in the Mountain West that has been to some Bowl games or the constant doormat of the Big-XII?? Baylor got what they wanted and also got into a league that they struggling (in men's sports) . If they can improve they will be better off but in 10 years they haven't. That is what I meant by be careful for you ask for. ---Agree we really do need to improve our football stadium situation. The problem is not age as much as modernization and overall set-up. Parts of Texas Memorial and Kyle Field are even older BUT... ours is a bad design to start with with too much space between the field and the stands. ie. Start over and soon. ---I favor CUSA ONLY because of regional match-ups... long term it would not surprise me to see the Belt the better conference. The West-CUSA group contains a lot of small private schools that are not likely to improve much...Houston and UTEP might.... the Belt contains teams that will improve and maybe greatly. I still think the Big East will change up some which will become an domino effort and could change CUSA and the Belt and maybe even the WAC if some if LaTech and NMSU come East again. LaTech is out of place and NMSU would like to in the same conf as UTEP and maybe even us. NMSU is in a tough spot because the Belt is now very far East and the WAC is very far West. They thought they were joining UTEP but then UTEP left the WAC. ---I was proud of our basketball win against LLU last night and the tournament looks wide open with 5-6 teams as possible winner...BUT.... I was really disappointed at the turn-out by fans... especially students who are on campus. They need to realize to sports success and fan support is one indication of being considered a major university. The crowds much were better during the 60's..... and the enrollment was 13,000 not 33,000....... Sad.

----You are right.... 20 wins does't get you an invite, maybe not even NIT but it is better than we were doing. You are also right that the coaching staff needs to learn how to finish games and turn those close losses into close wins. -THINK !!- That is why I stated "We need to get our act together.... The league is fairly decent (not great) but the end of the season indicated by all the close games and "upsets" that the winner of it all is an open position and any of about 6-8 teams could win it. We are one of them..... ---They need our fan support and they need to go in with some confidence that they can win and that winning it is not really a stretch at this point. I don't see anyone in the league that I think is really better. Only 1-2-3 shots made in those losses turn those into wins instead. That is not too much more to expect and hope for.

My Mean Green Encounter With Nfl Hall Of Famer

--Berry did not play in college during or after 1960 which is what I meant. He did play well into the 60's however. Bobby Lane was also playing in the NFL until the early '60's but left UT in 1947. ---1960 is an interesting NFL year and to me starts the modern era..... Those players that started before then represent a totally different group. The AFL started in 1960 and the NFL added the Cowboys that year and Minnesota started the following year. This is the beginning of National-wide pro football. Until then it was pretty much a Northeastern league with a couple of West-Coast teams. TV coverage really kicked in at that time as well. (TV had been common place in remote areas only a few years (5?). Also I was a HS kid in 1960 and almost no-one ever talked pro-football or paid much attention to it at that time... Here people paid more attention to college football. A lot of the very good players in college did not even "go pro" until that time because of the salery was rather low and physical risk was high. -
From NT athletics site: (interesting) With one more win this edition of the Mean Green would become only the fifth 20-win team in the school’s history. Currently the 19 wins stands as the most successful season at NT since 1977-78. The Mean Green will bring the nation’s 30th rated offense into the tournament. It is led not only by Davis but, also the low-post duo of Quincy Williams and Keith Wooden. Williams currently leads the Sun Belt in field goal percentage (56.8), and Wooden is averaging 11 points and 8.5 rebounds per game over his last six outings. ___________________________________________ ---This could be interesting unless we shoot ourselves in the foot... our last FIVE losses have been by a total of "eleven points". We need to get our act together.

---He is the ONLY former Aggie player to be a member of the NFL Hall of Fame.....which means we have as many alums in the HOF as do the Aggies and Baylor (Singletary) and one more than TxTech (none). To me that is somewhat surprising. UT only has one that has played since 1960 (Earl Campbell) but also had Tex Schram and Landry for their non-playing duties. The same is true of SMU and TCU.... only E.Dickerson and Bob Lilly played since 1960...... UTEP has one and there are one or two from smaller colleges. ---In other words there are not a lot of those guys walking around in Texas. UT, SMU, and TCU had several players that were players prior to 1960 but I am not sure if any of those are still alive. -

---North Texas is 20 times larger than Howard Payne. ----- We need to do better--- (this was girls basketball at a college of about 1500) I attended HPU my freshman year which is in my hometown. _________________________________________________________________________ Lady Jackets Win American Southwest Conference Title Author: University News Service The No. 3 ranked Howard Payne Lady Jackets prevailed 49-40 over No. 10 McMurry to claim the American Southwest Conference women's basketball championship on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,850 fans at Brownwood Coliseum in the final regular season women's game. West Division top seed HPU (27-1) won its second conference title in three years. -
-- We play OU the first week... need to make sure it is obvious who is going to be 0-2.... I doubt we win the first one but maybe a miracle will happen.

---One more comment-- at the time Cincinatti, Memphis and Louisville left the MVC... the NCAA basketball rules only allowed one conference member to enter the post season tournament, the league champion. As a result sometimes some Top-10 teams were not even allowed to play because they were the second best in their conference. . There was an advantage to being independent in basketball for a while since several independents were chosen. ..later the rules permitted a maximum of two per conference.... which we got burned on after we were independent and should have been picked (23-4 ?) but a #2 team was taken instead of us even though a regional was held in Denton. ---At that time it was only a 18 or 24 team tournament, later 32 teams and two per conference allowed ... then it later became 64 teams as it is now. -
--- I won't --- I would not cheer for SMU against anyone... not even some Yankee or West-Coast team. I hope Tech drills them and demoralizes them so we we can just pulverize them.... As you can tell... I have no love for those cheating, disrespectful arrogant slimeballs. --I would say worse but the board's obscenity rules prevent me from stating it....LOL

--- I have been to a lot of major cities.. both in Europe and the USA... and Dallas has the worse downtown of everyone of them,... even Ft Worth is far superior in the evening. I went to a convention a few years ago in downtown Dallas and I found it hard to believe how "dead" it was. Having been to a lot of major cities I can tell you that people feel a lot safer in cities where there are a lot of people circulating around... that is not the case in downtown Dallas. There is safety in numbers and Dallas has very few. It can spooky down there in the evening unless you are in the small area of West-End. The problem I see is there (first) are not much mass transportation into the area and not as many Hotels with people filing the streets as goes on other places. Because of those two problems there are few eating places or places to just hang out.

The MVC. Cincinnatti left in 1969 Memphis left in 1973 Louisville left in 1974 North Texas left in 1974 The Metro-Conference was formed as a "basketball conference" with the above teams (but not us) plus So. Miss and Tulane, and maybe St. Louis and maybe sone more in 1975 or 76.. It pretty much became CUSA when it became a football conference as well. We went Independent and the SWC membership may have a a stretch (maybe) but we came with one vote of being accepted since we needed 7 of the 9 members to vote for us .... 6 did......, SMU, TCU and Baylor did not. SMU opposed us and convinced the others to vote with them based on the fear that we would be a metroplex area team (state supported as well) and would harm their programs. The MVC continued to exist as a football league until the end of 1985... there were enough teams to continue (unlike what has been said). .. Tulsa, Wichita, West Texas, New Mexico State, Drake and a few others (Illinois State) were still in in when it folded as a football league after the 85 season.. Wichita State football ended in 1986 and was then independent. The MVC was also forced into I-AA the same time (1982) that we were placed there. The MVC still exists as a basketball league and three made the NCAA basketball tournament last year.... Bradley, Wichita and So. Illinois. When Larry Bird made the finals with Indiana State, it was a MVC basketball member.... as it is now. http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/index.php This site supports most of what I stated.
