  1. the* (I don't claim them)
  2. ---It is political correctness completely out of control. Never is a native American name for a college used as a insult of them although a few live mascots or cartoonish figures may carry it a bit far. Most names (mascots, place names, etc.) are very respectful of our native American heritage. I guess some of radical ones would just want us to forget they exist or ever existed and just erase their name from everything including their erasing their past. Then they would probably start complaining about that wanting more attention paid to them then and demand a Native American month or something else. I doubt that most native Americans want this but the radical folks of any group [ native Americans, politicians, religious extremists, etc. ] you just can't satisfy. They will always find something to complain about and stir up trouble.. --- All of us need to just not emphasize what group we are a member of and accept the past as past and only complain about what is truly insulting or disrespectful. It seems like some groups have special days almost every month.... Live in the present, most of the injustices of the past were not done by the people who are alive today or even their children or grand-children. --The most insulting of all of those in existance now is the term "REDSKINS" which exists in our nation's capital.... of all places. People would scream to high heaven if the term blackskins, brownskins, or whiteskins were used. That is the one they should complain about... not Indians which McMurry and ASU used. Perhaps they should just change it to Indians which was never meant to insult anyone.
  3. ---All..?? if MOST of them had decent attitudes then my opinion would change... about the time I find a decent one then 3-4 of the other type appears. It would also help my opinion of them if they were not constantly ignoring our existence or trashing us in the media which their leadership seems to do with some regularity. They are always claiming the have the ONLY whatever program etc. in the area when they know very well ours is as good or better than what they have. They seem to think that we, UTD, TCU, or UTA don't even exist. TCU folks have a similiar opinion of them as well. --We need to win this one to prove last year was no fluke...
  4. -- My kids know I can walk on water... I have done it before...... of course it was about 12 degrees and had been that way for several days.
  5. --In 2006, they lost to Florida State by 7, Georgia Tech by 15. --in 2005, they had a rather bad year --in 2004, they defeated Marshall and Missouri, and lost lost to highly ranked LSU by 4. --in 2003, they defeated Marshall and UAB. --In general they have not fared all that poorly lately .... and with a little luck, and no unfriendly refs, they could win several more games they most people expect them to win. You have to have some confidence in yourself and believe that good things are possible.
  6. ---Six years..???.. maybe they should recruit people who know how to read before enrolling there.
  7. --Just having money doesn't not create a person of class... just as not having a lot of money doesn't deny one from having class either. Arrogance is not a sign of class... just stupidity. ---SMU will always be a rival whether we compete against each other in athletics or not. We are in the same "neighborhood" with our alums making contact regularly. Beat SMU and the rest of them. !!!
  8. --We would have been in the Big XII if we had been able to keep the COACH that used that helmet... Hayden Fry (from Odessa, West-Texas). His version of football was very entertaining as was he and his gift for gab. ---I still like some version of the super-imposed NT, not exactly the one Joe Greene et. al. used but something close. The worm does jump out at you BUT it is also the largest logo used.... at least in the pictures. It looks way too dated now.
  9. --- The President ( and friends) hates the media also. They don't like things said that they don't agree with or that they don't want publicized or their actions criticized. Good ol" Nixon was trying to even have the FCC pull the broadcasting licenses of various stations that was reporting stories about Watergate. Not everything said in the media or here is accurate but we have a right to say them. --- This a good idea but someone needs to set up an account somehow with a couple of names or so on it to control the funds or accept pledges..
  10. ---Interesting to note that is was from New Orleans, likely displaced by the hurricane. If that is his only incident, it could be meaningless.... perhaps the guy had been harassing him and he just had enough. The kid likely has been having a bad time considering all that he might have gone through. I am sure TD has checked into the entire story.
  11. ---I disagree.......Since the increased recruiting is being successful anyway, I would think it would increase the odds. One reason to have kept us out is so we couldn't recruit against them. It appears that reason is disappearing fast and being a member or not a member may make little difference now. I would think one more reason to keep out is vanishing. ---If we can overshadow SMU (especially because of the large Dallas/Texas market) and also some others of them without being a member, then I would think it might increase our chances. It is extremely early and maybe not possible but a good winning season this year and defeating SMU again would sure help our reputation and credibility. Overall last season was a bad one but it would not take a lot of improvement to turn several of those losses into wins. Less stupid penalities and a better mind-set will help a lot.
  12. --Personally I grin more when Michael Johnson (Baylor grad and track star) is seen in Coors Lite commercials.
  13. --- Maybe DD was just really trying to help us and we misunderstood him....... wear black..... there is only shade of Black.... BLACK... LOL
  14. ---This is ridiculous ..... as it has been for years. No one is more deserving, including at least half of those already inducted.
  15. --Good comment.... a lot of coaching is getting the best out of the talent that is available and I don't think DD did. For one thing I expect a lot less stupid penalites which often cost us points or give the opponent points.
  16. ---They had defeated the Aggies first but lost the final two so the Aggies move on. They got the Aggs respect and attention and did not hurt the Belt's image any.
  17. ---Four straight years will become much tougher as the league improves overall -- and it is. I do expect us to be even better in the near future than we were when we won the four straight years and with better talent (teamwise).... the problem is so will the rest of the Belt. This year is a complete mystery to me... we should win more than last year but not do that great with Dodge only recruiting just one year, and they are Freshman. We could be anywhere to 2 to 7 wins. I expect us to win more Belt games and 5 or 6 wins being likely as a total. ---Any coach capable of winning four straight in the Belt will likely move on before that happens so that makes 4 straight unlikely as well. Let us hope the rest of Belt can improve and knock off some "name" teams to improve the Belt's image. We are just now getting to point that HS recruits have grown up hearing the Conference's name in football) and not thinking it is a new flash in the pan. ---Congrats to the Raging Cajuns for doing well in baseball and almost making the College World series... They came up one game short and lost to the Aggies twice after first defeating them. They got the Aggies attention.
  18. ---I live in Midland... Benson was very good. and the person prior to him was named Strambler who also excelled at being a jerk. He did nothing in college. I also saw Steve Worster of Bridge City who later led UT to a National championship in 1969 when they ran the wishbone and won 30 consecutive games. The day I saw him against Brownwood he got 30 whooping yards until reserves played the final couple of minutes... however Brownwood had shut out 9 opponents that year (plus Bridge City) and only one team had managed more than 10 points. I was a Brownwood highschool/elementary school classmate with Max Emfinger and he very good considering his size. He was very determined, quick, and hard to bring down because he had the ability to often spin out of tackles.. My vote for THE BEST is Earl Campbell, did not see him, but knew a lot of people who did. He was a man playing with a bunch of kids.
  19. For Harry----testing... Harry... It now works!!
  20. ---Scrappy was the mascot name used during the 60's and I think even the 50's. If that live Eagle existed during the 70's, he was named for what had existed for years. During the 60's I remember seeing some stuffed eagles in the Union building that had once been mascots at some point in the past. I think they were Golden Eagles and were showing their age even then. Eppy (the costumed mascot) was a temporary change to a peaceful, non-violent mascot... the change seemed dumb then and even dumber now.
  21. --Publicity is publicity.... the name used is our name even if it did not mean us. That was the headline in Yahoo sports news as well. Out of state people may not know they were refering to the metroplex (Dallas).
  22. ---Talk about peer pressure... The guilty guys will hear a lot of comments from the rest... and maybe team members will try to see that teammates stay out of trouble. It will likely also keep some of the the arrogant ones feet on the ground as well.
  23. ---Dodge did no recruiting until after Christmas since his HS team played until the final weekend before then. DD was let go with at least three games left and don't remember any other coaches being released that early. I remember some instances in years past in which an assistant (other colleges) finished the season's final game or two when the head coach was released and either the Coach or university did not want him to continue. (Spike Dykes did this at TxTech) DD could have been officially released at least 10 days later than he was. ( or Nov. 18) when there was only one game remaining. ---In any case it was a classless move on DD's part to do what he did, we had given (and paid him) a head coaching job for nine years. It may not the best paying coaching position around but it sure beat what most people are earning and he agreed to it. At least this way he had a chance to look around for other positions as they opened up and I suppose the athletic department "trusted him" to do what was expected of the position. ---Rick is probably correct... there is no "tampering" rule involving HS and colleges like the NFL has. The early announcement may have happened because DD learned Dodge had been contacted. The 30 day rule just gives everyone a chance to learn of the opening and apply... doesn't mean the decision has not likely been already made, it just can't be announced or officially filled until then and the new guy can not take any job actions until 30 days have passed...
  24. ---DD probably is/was a good person .... BUT .... he made himself a target when he suited up the team in black uniforms. He would have left here with a lot more friends at NT if he had not done that. With that action he was asking for criticism forever and burned a lot of bridges. Other coaches have been fired also but I don't remember anyone doing anything similar. In an odd way our athletic department was asking for it when he was released so early in the season but was still around to coach several games and had time come up with somewhat a parting shot. That just isn't done in corporate America... fired but still on the job (unless the job is being eliminated which is not exactly being fired for poor performance). --- North Texas has been the only university to hire him as a head coach (and for nine years) and we did not deserve that type of classless exit. He had won only 5 of his final 23 games (21%) and the schedule was not that demanding for many of those games. ....He should not have been very surprised....besides most of those losses just weren't all those close.
