  1. Nice!!
  2. It worked once and will work again! North Texas 24 Tulsa 21 By the way, how did a team in land-locked Oklahoma come up with the name Hurricanes??
  3. Those are some great photos! Thanks for posting.
  4. Well, there is the "corps style" and that is what most of the bands use today, including North Texas. The military style is used by colleges like A & M and Va Tech's Highty Tighties. I believe Silver's reference to the "show band"style is what colleges used to use and some still do, especially for the pre-game...think about Ohio State's "dotting the i" The historically black colleges have a "high-stepping" style all their own. Finally, there are the "scatter" bands like Stanford and Rice. There will be a quiz next week so study hard!
  5. That list was plagiarized and is the only US News and World Report survey done on graduate music schools about 15 years old. Also, there were several ties on the original list and if I recall, UNT in absolute terms was ranked about 11. Most professional musicians would tell you the list is bunk anyway. For example, Illinois is ranked ahead of North Texas but their Dean left to take the job at North Texas. Curtis is widely respected as the "best" with Juilliard to follow. There is no doubt, however, that Indiana is a very fine school. Interestingly, the Dean at North Texas in the 50s, Willford Bain, left Denton to become the Dean at Indiana and did great things there. The two schools battle each year to claim which is the largest school of music in the country. Last I checked, North Texas is the largest if that matters!
  6. The local press here (Raleigh-Durham) is reporting that the ACC will be adding Rutgers and UConn next. I really doubt that anyone bolts from the ACC. The presidents just unanimously voted to increase the exit fee to 20M. My two cents is that this will ultimately affect North Texas sooner than later.
  7. Alabama's State Slogan: "If it wasn't for Mississippi, we would be last!"
  8. I'm confused. I thought you requested us to focus on the positive and quit the negativity! Are we allowed to resume our negative ways? I have been a critic of the band primarily due to the fact they don't do things like in the old days! I'm getting old and this is what we like to do. So, here are a few positives: 1. Good for them for not wearing their uniforms in the summer heat. In the "old days" we wore suits with an overlay on top of that. Think how comfortable you would be at the game in a heavy wool suit with a vinyl topcoat. While on that subject, if the decision was up to me, I would order one of every shade of green on the Pantone scale, that way, we would be sure to have at least one hue of whatever green the team is wearing. 2. In a previous thread, I read that the students had to provide their own shorts. Thank you for doing this. 3. Thank you for giving up your summer break and coming to campus early. 4. Thank you for practicing many hours a week in the hot sun for your one credit hour. 5. Thank you to the director for putting a band of over 300 on the field. The logistics involved in this are tremendous. He is paid much less than half of the least well paid member of the football staff and he has no other full time staff to help him. 6. And congratulations for being named the top college band in the country. Even though it was from the Bleacher Report, there are 119 other D1A schools that would have loved to have that publicity.
  9. Details, details...maybe our SID can explain the error?
  10. I had to come into the office today and have seen a great many people getting ready for Duke's game with Richmond (my money is on the Spiders). Anyway, the Duke fans are all dressed in blue t-shirts. On the back of the shirts, there is a stylized drawing of two praying hands pointing upwards with the Duke "D" underneath receiving some sort of blessing from above. Pretty clever! Clearly we are not the only ones hoping (or praying) for better things to come!
  11. There are at least three or four of us from the "old days" (I'm in my 40th year of being a fan) that are active on this board. As much as I dislike the comparison of an abusive relationship, there is some truth to what he says. Not to start telling 'old fart" stories, but I remember when I was a lieutenant stationed with a handful of other Americans on a Turkish Air Force base in Balikesir. I've have to shoot you if I told you what we did. Anyway, in those days, there was no Internet, TV, etc etc and the only link we had with the outside world was the weekly delivery of "The Stars and Stripes", a newspaper for GIs stationed overseas. I could not wait to get those papers and the first thing I did was to go to the sports section to see how North Texas had done even though the game had taken place over two weeks prior. We've seen the program when Florida State would come to Fouts, regular whoopings of Corso's Louisville teams, national ranking, etc. And while we never set the world on fire, there was a national measure of respect for North Texas State and no one laughed at us, even in the lean years. But since then, I am not sure there is another D1A program in the country that has suffered like North Texas. And that is why the blow-out to FIU was so disappointing. Maybe I didn't expect a win but after the new well-paid coach, bravado, etc, I was hoping for a close game. After it was all over, I said to myself, "why do I bother? This is just more of the same." But like an abused spouse, I will be back for more; win or lose.
  12. Florida = God's waiting room.
  13. I suspect it would be also very difficult to receive any type of television exposure as an independent. All the other schools you mention have quite a bit more name recognition than we do, unfortunately.
  14. Dan Mac is here to stay So here is what I say It's time to boot haiku iambic trimeter's for you The past is all behind On us, the sun will shine North Texas' success is clear So let's all give a cheer
  15. I know a program is usually not turned around overnight (it does happen, though), but I hope we can muster more than 4 wins after all the attention and money our program has received this past year.
  16. Very sad. Our country is fortunate to have such outstanding young men.
  17. There has never been a requirement for every music major to be in the marching band. We would have a band of 1600+ if that were the case! I think you are referring to Maurice McAdow's requirement that every person who wanted to be in the concert band (the top band during that time) had to march. As he would say, "if you don't walk, you don't sit!" As I've posted before, it was common that the head band director at major universities conduct both the marching and concert bands but those days are long gone. I suspect now it is a requirement for every (band) instrumental music ed major march in the band at least a few semesters, but that wasn't always the case.
  18. This is a great month for North Texas and I could not be more proud of our school! The College of Music really needs this gift and I know Dean Scott will put this to good use. 10 million is a great deal of money but other schools have benefited from similar gifts. Rice University received 8 million in 1950 and let it grow until 1975 when they finally opened their school of music! Yale University's school of music recently received a gift of 100 million which has enabled them to eliminate tuition for all music majors. Yale's Dean is a North Texas graduate (twice) by the way. Video of the announcement. Thank you, Sir!
  19. KRAM1 is right. Good things come in threes. As Paul Harvey said, "Stand by for news!"
  20. On the contrary, seems like a great deal to me. Congratulations to all those involved! My link
  21. I'll trade you! My shirt was a commemorative T from the Sun Belt Track and Field Championship!
  22. Quite right! Think of the advantage this would give our linemen.
  23. Can somebody confirm that this is or is not the same shade of green we unveiled a few years ago? It's hard to tell with the lighting and screen resolution. I also am glad to see no black!
  24. The groudbreaking for the "Super Pit" was in 1972, and it opened in 1973. As much as I love Hayden Fry, and what he did for our program, he told the DesMoines Register a big fat lie.
  25. Wasn't there also some story (or something similar) about the woman's bb coach coming into his office complaining that someone had spilled water on the court and did not clean it up? He said to himself something like, "what am I doing in this place?" I'm sure the demands of being an AD along with head coach were pretty great although he did get to drive an apple green car! Silver, one small point...the dancers were called the Mean Green Dollies as I recall.
