Recapping the old/new Big East in terms of North Texas
letsgiveacheer replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
The bowls are going to be another question. I would be really surprised if CUSA retains all its tie-ins once the current contracts expire. I would guess most of them would go to the new conference. -
Maybe FGCU would be interested in joining?

Yes, but I bet we could whip them in football!

Off season fun! Crazy dorm stories!
letsgiveacheer replied to North Texas Shep's topic in Mean Green Football
Certainly agree that this was not a good idea!!! In those days a mass shooting would have been unthinkable and I believe this is why the officers dismissed this as a college prank. This trip down memory lane made me think about whatever happened to my old friend. It's amazing what you can find with a quick Google and it appears the dressing down was not his last experience with the law. Unfortunately, he has been in and out of our penal system quite a bit. Mostly drug and bad check charges. What a shame this is. He came from a really nice family, was an excellent athlete, etc. I hope he has his life together now. -
It's the NIT for Middle. Also, I see the Troy coach retired after 30 or so years and 500 wins. Best wishes to him.

20 loss Liberty Flames going to the Dance
letsgiveacheer replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I notice Liberty licked Longwood pretty well during the regular Big South season. -
I appreciated our team. It is often easy to forget that they are still young men and I suspect they gave it all they could given the circumstances.

Evans at the post game show "better days are ahead!" Now that's something I've never heard before!

AP: Big East football keeps $100m in split
letsgiveacheer replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Agreed, the C7 schools really did make out in tis deal! My guess is that the new C7 conference woud want its schools to be full members in everything as well as share a common footprint such as being private and Catholic, expensive, etc. But then, if the Pope can retire, then anything is possible. -
Off season fun! Crazy dorm stories!
letsgiveacheer replied to North Texas Shep's topic in Mean Green Football
Ok, here we go.... In 1971 at West Hall (not coed, of couse) I had a friend named Ross P. who had transfered from a small men's school in Virginia, Randolph-Macon, to throw javelin for our track team. As I was also from Virginia, we became friends, sometimes to my great regret. One day, Ross came into my room with a starter's pistol he had brought from track practice. His idea was to go to the pool room at West and fire at me. I was to "go down" and then we would watch the hilarity ensue. So, I go and get into a game of pool with some others. Ross comes in as planned, fires the pistol and I hit the floor. Next, he fires at someone else who also goes down. Now both of us are really concerned as this was not part of the plan. Turns out the guy fainted from fright. The rest of the people run out of the pool room into the street, zigging and zagging to avoid being hit with Ross in hot pursuit, firing away. I (quickly) returned to my room and began studying. In a matter of minutes, the place is crawling with the campus police, Denton police and the Texas Rangers. About 30 minutes later, Ross returns with his tail between his legs. Surprisingly, all the police did was give him a good dressing down and took his pistol away! It seemed a good idea at the time. I'll save the story of the time I put a scorpion in my roommate's bed for another occasion. -
Congratulations to them but I wish they would wear green rather than black. Or either we should become the Mean Black and put this argument to rest for good.

Happy 84th Birthday to Legendary UNT / Iowa Coach Fry
letsgiveacheer replied to Green59's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes, he was a great coach by any standard. But there is a fine line between being a raconteur and something else and Fry often crosses this line even when he was young. In this interview, there are so many incorrect statements it is hard to know where to begin. The Mustang story is something he has told time and time again but he is the only one who does so. Ford has another version and Fry never comes into play. Tennessee was not ranked number 5 at the time of our game with them. He did not have winning records immediately after coming to North Texas. Rust had three years of losing seasons but prior to then, he had some really excellent seasons, going 8-2 several years if I recall. There are some other whoppers Fry has often told like raising all the money for the Super Pit. The story about him painting the visitor's locker room pink is true. What is also true is that he was probably the greatest coach North Texas ever had and maybe ever will have. It's a pity that the younger fans never had the opportunity to see a Fry coached North Texas team. They were something! -
Postseason success would forgive disappointing season
letsgiveacheer replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
And so would a trip to the Final Four! -
As someone already said, please make it stop. UNC is in some trouble with SACS for handing out worthless degrees to "student-athletes" and their chancellor just resigned to become the provost at St. Louis (I think that's the school). Here in the Triangle, you commonly see homes painted Carolina blue, Duke blue, and NC State red. A few years ago, I would have told you that a break-up of the Tobacco Road rivalries would be impossible. Now, it would not surprise me one bit. Rumors are circulating that UVa may be going as well. Maybe its a good thing we have no rivals after all?

What UNT helmet logo would you prefer?
letsgiveacheer replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
There's too much in the box thinking here. Let's really shake things up with a picture a distinguished alumni like Roy Orbinson or Dr. Phil on the helmet. -
Anyone think ACU will catch up with us?
letsgiveacheer replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm afraid you don't know much about our history. Our relationship with some of these schools (Louisville, Cincinnati, Houston, etc) goes back long before Fry. Others came out of nowhere and quickly passed us ( South and Central Florida, Boise State, etc). Some, like ECU were playing the forerunner of IAA ball when North Texas was playing with the big boys. When we complain about people still calling us North Texas State, that is because whatever success and visibility we had on the football field, it occurred when that was our name. We never set the world on fire other than a few seasons under Fry and earlier under Mitchell, but we were still respected and never at the bottom of the barrel as we are today. -
