Just don't expect any tailgating! Alcohol can only be served in hotels and in the homes of "special" individuals who hold a license.

GMG.com Places to eat and drink in Denton -- 2013 version
letsgiveacheer replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Hi Plumm, Obviously I can't speak to that but do know that Pender's does quite a bit for UNT in terms of financial support. They also hire many UNT grads of course. I forget the son's name that runs Pender's now but he was some years behind me and used to hang out at North Texas while still a student at Denton High School. I don't know if he attended North Texas or not.- 156 replies

Good memory! No, you're not dreaming! Harold Gore bought a little store that sold a lot of everything, a smaller version of Voertmans but it was sheet music that he really promoted. I forgot the name of the street this was located but it was annexed by the university and an academic building is there now. Anyway, Penders moved near the square and dropped everything but sheet music. Under the direction of Harold's son, they are one of the largest music distributors and publishers in the country...still in Denton among several other locations. Pender's- 156 replies

I do remember the Hickory House having the best BBQ in Denton at the time. I also remember there was a chicken place very close by that was pretty good. They gave you a free jalapeno with every order! But being from Virginia, what would I know about Texas BBQ? Here, we use pork and vinegar sauce.- 156 replies

One thing I really miss from Texas and cannot get elsewhere is Chicken Fried Steak. I hope to get back to campus this fall. Any recommendations? I know they used to be great at Ranchman's.- 156 replies

Reading this thread makes me hungry! I worked at the Pizza Inn on Eagle all four years while at North Texas. I think it is gone now but if it is not, it should be! Of all the places mentioned, the only one I remember is Ranchman's. What a great place that is. The last time I was in Denton ( 2 years ago, unfortunately), some of my old gang met there for a little reunion and it has not changed a bit! But reading some of these other suggestions...truffle mayo, sushi ??? The only seafood served in Denton in the early 70s came from a Mrs. Paul's box.- 156 replies

UNT Board increases student fees for athletics
letsgiveacheer replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
The Dallas Business Journal said we had an athletic budget of about 22.5M. In another post about our GPA's, someone on this board said we had 300 student-athletes at UNT. If thiose figures are correct, we are spending about 75,000 per athlete annually. Wow. -
Thanks so much, Harry. Gomeangreen.com is a big part of my life! My opera company is in France preparing for performace at the historis Opera Theatre D'Avignon. Sorry Silver, no Wagner fanfare here!

There are four or five excellent old-line Creole places: Antoines, Broussards ( got engaged there; must have been liquored up)!), Arnauds, and my favorite, Galatoire's. I don;t know about today, but all of them used to ask gentlemen to wear coats and ties. If you are looking for a place with a little less damage to the wallet, then Tujaques is your place. All of these have been around forever. Mothers and Acme have already been mentioned and I second that! Some other 'off the radar" places in NO: Favorite Bar: Napoleon House Best sandwich not a Poorboy: Muffuletta from Central Grocery Best native ice cream: Angelo Brocato's I used to live in Biloxi and NO was a frequent destination.

Not impressed as there is not much originality here. Does anyone else think the stylized star is in homage to CUSA?

ODU Football Ups Revenue $2,000,000
letsgiveacheer replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
"admire guys like you and Gray Eagle and SilverEagle who have stuck with this program after seeing some very good teams in the 60s and 70s. Its amazing to me that anyone could have put up with what the last 35 years have brought, save for the 1988 and 2001-2004 seasons." This made me think about things and I looked up our records since I began following North Texas football in 1971. In 42 years of being an avid fan, I've seen only 14 winning seasons! Something's wrong here, folks! Maybe its me? -
Thanks for posting and the team did indeed look sharp. I enjoyed listening the the KSU feed for some of the game and recall they were really complimentary of us. None of that "we looked past them" nonsense. Here's hoping for a winning season and bowl invite! PS. I know I'm in the minority here but our uniforms look great. Simple and to the point.

ODU Football Ups Revenue $2,000,000
letsgiveacheer replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
We've written about this before but as All About UNT said, ODU is in a really good situation. A huge metro population with no competition. When I was growing up, they even used to hold an annual "Oyster Bowl" with the purpose of bringing a major college football game to Norfolk. Even without playing 1A ball, their athletic budget is among the top of all of CUSA. Once they get their stadium upgraded and have a few years of 1A experience, I predict they will be the next school to join the AAC. -
I was at Barnes and Noble this morning and noticed that the football magazines are starting to arrive. One of them ( I forget which ) ranked the conferences and (following the BCS conferences) had the following: AAC, MWC, Sun Belt, MAC and finally CUSA. I know you can't read too much into things like this but still, it was disapointing.

Marching band selections from the old days.
letsgiveacheer replied to letsgiveacheer's topic in Mean Green Football
It's a great march but not to be a "know it all", it was written by an Austrian, Josef Wagner, not Sousa. It was one of Sousa's most favorite marches. Hitler's too for that matter. -

How many suits will we need to bring?
-
It's things like this we should complain about. I can't imagine any other IA program would show their all-century team in uniforms other than the school they represented. If this was a one time thing, it would be no big deal, but we tend to do things like this all the time. How about that new season trailer? I especially liked the inclusion of Idaho and only hope they reciprocate.
