  1. "Villarreal went on to make that point that the investment UNT made in other programs like tennis paid off eventually." Not to belittle the tennis team's accomplishments as they have been one of the few bright spots in UNT sports in recent years but while they have done very well in the Sun Belt, they lost most of their out of conference games this year and went out in the first round of NCAA play. I hope this is not our benchmark.
  2. What a small world. "Magic Mike" is in a relationship with the young lady who used to cut my hair...until she left to become a pirate as well. You can't make this stuff up.
  3. In my opinion, the one really distinctive uniform we have ever had was during the Fry years. You never forgot the candy apple green nor the flying worm and I would be delighted to see these worn again. But, if I were to guess what what is worn on throwback day, I would guess a mashup of several uniforms from the past. Now if we could only get the band to play the original fight song for at least this one game!
  4. Agree with the earlier posts that say winning is the key, not our entry into CUSA. When Apogee opened, most thought that would be the ticket to increased attendence but of course that did not happen. In fact, given our dismal record of the past decade, it is very remarkable we get as many fans as we do. Is there any other school with a record as bad as ours that draws similar attendence numbers?
  5. He has his M.D. from Ross University, a Caribbean medical school owned by DeVry. Ross seems to be in the news quite a bit and sometimes not in the most favorable light.
  6. This is really first rate. Well done, Christopher!
  7. Are you sure you didn't mean to hire Art van de Lay instead?
  8. Plumm, point well taken. Let me propose this. Instead of a signature win, we had a signature season in 1978 when we finished 9-2 and ranked 15 in the nation. Has any other current CUSA team finished so high?
  9. I would go as far as saying we have never had a big win. If I recall, the only ranked team we ever beat in 99 years was San Diego State in 74 (or somewhere close) and the rumors behind that was Hayden Fry voted them strong the week prior, bringing them up in the standings. We keep talking about the Tennessee win which was very nice but they had a lackluster season that year. Look at who Monroe has beaten in their short time in IA.
  10. I was so excited, I wanted to give to the Mean Green Club, but the link brings me back to the home page.
  11. That cake is one of the saddest looking things I've seen in a long time. Where did they go for that? Krogers? I hope they served some punch and ice cream to go with it. Some party hats would have really made the day something to remember.
  12. A good article from my high school classmate! For selfish reasons, I'm very glad to see ODU in CUSA. With ODU, Charlotte, Marshall, and (for a short time) ECU, I can finally see North Texas games on a regular basis!
  13. Happy Birthday to my friend, Silver! I'm about to break out my spats and march around Fouts in your honor, all while playing a Wagner fanfare!
  14. Yes, I plan to make the drive from Durham. Only 6 1/2 hours away and much closer than any other UNT away game this season. I've book a room at the Ohio U. on-campus hotel. The Athens Hampton Inn was sold out. For a bit of UNT trivia, we play two away games in towns named Athens. See you there!
  15. Ah, but there was and therein lies my confusion. I remember reading the Carolina gold rush was the origin of their nickname, witness the pickaxe in their logo!! But maybe this axe is just to throw me and everyone else off! Carolina Gold Rush
  16. Maybe PickAxe can elaborate but as I understand, they are named after the gold rush (yes!) that took place around Charlotte in 1849.
  17. Welcome. It looks like all the cool guys in CUSA will be wearing green!
  18. Shoot, these are some "glory years" compared to what we have been through in the past. Who remembers 98, 99, and 00 when we won a grand total of 23 men's basketball and football games combined? 98 3 wins in football, 4 in BB 99 2 in FB, 7 in BB 00, 3 in FB, 4 in BB
  19. What a sad coincidence we were just talking about this but the owner of Pender's died yesterday. Harold Gore
  20. Yes it is good company! That's why those ridiculous US News rankings are so disheartening for us.
  21. If you fly first class on Emirates, you can take a shower in route! I've already got my ticket just in case. For rich people only
  22. UAB: closed steelworks fun to visit Southern Miss: While living in Biloxi in 1979, I sent a letter to their MBA program looking for more information. In response, I received notification that I was accepted as a student, no GMAT, no transcripts, nothing! Terrific! La. Tech: Like that they have a doublewide to use for recruiting Rice: What's not to like about the Vanderbilt of the Southwest? UTEP: Kentucky Club accross the border. Best margaritas ever. UTSA: Can transfer to UTD, UTPB, UTB, UTPA, UTA, UTEP to keep eveyone confused
