  1. Sorry Silver, I could have sworn I stored my Bell and Howell Super 8 film of the half time show next to my Miss Green Jacket of 1974 calendar. Now I can't find either one.
  2. What great memories, although most of these were after my time. Here's the San Diego State game in 1974 which was our only victory ever against a ranked team. The announced attendance was 1000 (!) but in reality, it was more like 300. Note the fans rushing the field after the victory! http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc272190/m1/
  3. Agree. In 20 years of active duty, I never once heard any discussion about the AF Academy football team unless it was from former faculty members complaining about all the special treatment the football team when compared to the rest of the student body. Personally, I wouldn't drive ten miles to see the Academy play. They hold no more interest to me than say, Sul Ross State.
  4. Agree, it is going to be a very nice stadium. Congratulations to UH for getting this done.
  5. This is a story where no one wins. Stealing is despicable and our justice system will deal with that if the players are convicted. I just can't understand such behavior. As Mean Green fans, the larger question for us is what happens now? Are they thrown off the team, do they lose their scholarships? Sit out the first play of the Texas game? When I was an commander in the Air Force, I had occasions where young men, most the same age as our players, would break the rules, were caught, and had to be punished. I say had because the Uniform Code of Military Justice is very specific and leaves few, if any options as to what offenses must be brought to Court Martial. Thirty years past, I still regret having to press charges against those who "slipped up" so to speak. They were basically good airmen who made a mistake and deserved a second chance. On the other hand, there were those who were bad to the core and I did everything I could to either get them in prison or out of the Air Force. Mac has options I did not have and is paid a whole lot of money not only to be a coach but also to make the right decisions in these cases. If the two players are indeed basically good human beings and deserve a second chance, then I hope Mac does so. To varying degrees, we all do things we later regret.
  6. Happy Birthday, Bill!
  7. This is all very interesting. I suspect I am not the only one who has seen the USA Today Football Preview magazine. In this, we are ranked 84 if I recall correctly. You would think there would be some consistency between the magazine and paper.
  8. Why I knew this bit of useless information is almost scary. But since I'm the winner, what's my prize? Please send it to me care of: Vic Trilli Director of Athletics Newman University Marble Falls, Texas
  9. I'm afraid the flag is not original. The Esperanti would have something to say. See here.
  10. Let's not get Silver Eagle involved in this. You know what the outcome will be.
  11. That's nothing, I found Theron Fouts the other day here
  12. Of course this is exactly what Hayden Fry did as soon as he arrived on campus. He also assembled a team of "pretty girls" to assist in the recruiting effort. I can't remember what they were called...Mean Green Angels? Something like that. Maybe some of the other old timers can help here.
  13. Congratulations, Emmitt!
  14. Are we certain SMU didn't have anything to do with this?
  15. I hope they do get whipped! Last year, they begged UNC to shorten the fourth quarter to ten minutes when they were losing by about 60 points. This would have not be so bad except ODU had been running up the score in previous games against 1-AA opponents.
  16. Sometime in the 80's, they changed their school colors from Columbia (light) blue and white to slate blue and silver. That aside, the new helmet portrays their nickname better then the old one.
  17. UNC has deservedly been attracting attention for their bogus courses and degree programs. Here is what a final paper looks like, in its entirety, at that esteemed institution as submitted by a student-athlete. The paper received a grade of A-. On the evening of December Rosa Parks decided that she was going to sit in the white people section on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. During this time blacks had to give up there seats to whites when more whites got on the bus. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. Her and the bus driver began to talk and the conversation went like this. "Let me have those front seats" said the driver. She didn't get up and told the driver that she was tired of giving her seat to white people. "I'm going to have you arrested," said the driver. "You may do that," Rosa Parks responded. Two white policemen came in and Rosa Parks asked them "why do you all push us around?" The police officer replied and said "I don't know, but the law is the law and you're under arrest.
  18. Here's an interesting article from the Washington Post about future possibilities. It will be an exciting time!
  19. Creighton came later and yes, it sure was a great time to be a basketball fan at North Texas!
  20. It's nice to watch and root for so many of our old MVC partners in the NCAA tourney: Louisville, St Louis, Memphis and of course Wichita State. They all played great ball then and continue to do so today. I wish I could say the same about us.
  21. How times change. In the early 70's, you could only eat in the dorm in which you lived. I lived in West my freshman year so if I had a class in the Admin building for example, I had to walk back to West to have lunch. Obviously not very convenient or smart. There was only one entree for each meal and no concessions were made for those with any allergies or such. For me, the worse part is that the dining rooms were closed on Sunday night so you were on your own. On the plus side, I was introduced to Texas cuisine such as King Ranch Chicken, Frito Pie and my favorite, Chicken Fried Steak.
  22. I'm Whitman Mayo
  23. Signing it "Coach Benford" was better than if he signed it "Tony Denton".
