  1. I can't speak to Texas State but eastern schools of every size play many more sports than most of those in the west. For example ODU hosts nine men's sports and nine women's sports. Besides basketball, they are a powerhouse in field hockey, sailing and wrestling. IIRC, their athletic budget was larger than ours even before they started playing football.
  2. We can be a sad lot. In my day, every coach other than Ara Parseghian wore a suit and tie to each game, no matter the heat. Now what do they wear? Polo shirts and khakis. Why? Because it is too hot. Let's make a deal. At the next home game, you wear a wool suit and tie, sit in the sun, do a good amount of physical activity for three hours and then report back how you enjoyed the game.
  3. This is our SID's fault. Knowing this is a recurring problem, why can't they brief announcers prior to the game? BTW. Great game!
  4. We are still the Eagles I see. At least he didn't call us North Texas State.
  5. Unfortunately, Russia State's band cannot make it but they are sending their chorus which will present a "Salute to the Beetles" at halftime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIPSZq2Itf4
  6. Thanks for the correction. I'll fix it: Southern Methodist and/or Philosophical University
  7. It will be a pillow-fight, that's for sure. We looked as bad as I have ever seen and that is saying a lot! SMU looked bad against Baylor as well but Baylor was ranked and Texas was not. Central Arkansas, N. Dakota St., and S. Dakota St all did better than we did last week against ranked and/or B12 opponents. But, in the end, the Safeway Bowl will come down to who wants it most and that is us. North Texas 7 The biggest cheater ever in the history of college football, which is particularly bad since they come from a church school and one would think that God would give them some kind of extra help: 3
  8. I hope so because now, it's not looking so good.
  9. The schools that go by their initials have national reputations. Unfortunately, we do not and I do not see us achieving a national reputation any time soon. I work in New York City and am faced with blank stares every time I tell someone other than a musician where I went to school. This story will sound "big-headed" and I apologize in advance but it actually happened: I was having dinner with our board chair and his wife at his club. I knew the board chair quite well but this was the first time I had met his wife. Both were Harvard grads. We were making small talk and the wife asked me where I went to school. I told her I had done my undergrad work at North Texas. She did not respond and changed the subject. As dinner progressed and more wine was consumed, she then asked, "if you went to North Texas, how did you get to be so smart?"
  10. Local people may know UNT but I can assure you that UNT means nothing to those outside of the region. A typical conversation: "Where did you do to school" "UNT" "Where?" "UNT" "What is that?" "University of North Texas" "Oh"
  11. I always get a kick out of these. Growing up in Virginia, we had nothing like this. The magazine does not seem to change, and that's a good thing! I suspect there is quite a bit of work to put this together and congratulate Brett on his usual fine job. I do wish there was a bit more coverage on Ponder, however!
  12. For the past several weeks, each time I've visited gomeangreen.com, I notice there is one person in the chat room. Why is he there? Who is he talking to?
  13. UT 28 UNT 13 If Texas' band shows up in polo shirts and shorts, it will be much closer.
  14. I should ad that prior to signing up, Direct TV showed the Texas game as "available". After signing up and trying to find the game on Direct's schedule, I learned that it is being broadcast on Wednesday rather than live. Not quite the same thing! It does look like the SMU game will be broadcast live.
  15. For those out of town fans that use Direct TV, I just learned that most, if not all, of our televised games are available through Direct TV if you activate the "Sports Pack". if you call them to activate, it costs $13.99 a month but there is a special now if you activate on-line for $7 a month. Money well spent!
  16. Everything has changed in forty years but this is how it was: We marched 128. While there may have been some, I do not recall any non-music majors in the marching band. Mr. McAdow auditioned everyone before allowing them in and the standard of playing was very high. The primary reason people joined the marching band was to have a chance to play in the concert band in the spring, at that time the top band on campus. In the words of Mr. McAdow, "if you don't walk, you don't sit!" Among my fellow marchers are members of some of the top symphonies and leading professors. I should add that all the major programs did it this way. The Director of Bands always directed the marching band and the top concert band. Those days are long gone. It was not required for music ed. majors to be in the marching band. In fact, most of them avoided it. A few other tidbits: We wore our full uniforms for every game. Rehearsals were from 4 to 5 each day with dress rehearsals on game day. We did a new show for every game even when we played consecutive home games. In my four years, I remember only two out of town trips, one to Tulsa (out and back) and another to NM State where the governor came to Mr McAdow following our half time show and pronounced the North Texas band the best he had ever seen.
  17. you tell em, GreenMachine! You right. Who need's English, mathmatics, philopsphy, physics? None of those guys will ever come close to 70K. Music, art...for pansies only. get rid of them to. ROTC, forget about it. Those guys will never make big money. Foreign languages, no need, if they are in America, they should speak American.
  18. 7-5 Losses to Texas, Indiana, Rice and UTSA plus one of the other games we are supposed to win.
  19. 7-5 Losses to Texas, Indiana, Rice and UTSA plus one of the other games we are supposed to win. I'd say higher but have no idea about our QB or new starters.
  20. An excellent article. This also calls to mind Rod Rust who was fired from North Texas to later become head coach of the New England Patriots, only to be fired again after one dismal season.
  21. Hmmm... if Baron Von Raschke joins our forum, there may be trouble.
  22. For protection, it's hard to beat Troy State.
  23. Perhaps 25 years from now, it will be a big day when the UNT-Dallas Jaguars come to Apogee to play us.
  24. Touche Almost anything is believable when discussing UT football.
  25. This entire statement makes no sense. Are they not going to cooperate with the police until they have performed their internal investigation? Does the commissioner have the final say here or the boosters?
