Good move! When he first arrived, Haydn Fry sent his players, dressed in their jerseys, all over Denton to sell season tickets.

Hugh Freeze fired at Ole Miss
letsgiveacheer replied to Coach Bill Lewis's topic in Mean Green Football
As luck would have it, I found myself seated next to a former Ole Miss player at a bar in New York City on the very day Freeze's firing was announced. He had me in stitches with tales of life as a SEC football player. My favorite remark of the evening: "Most Ole Miss players take a pay cut when they go to the NFL!" -
They would start at about 100,000 plus expenses.

I don't know. When I was at North Texas, I don't remember any night games. Kickoff was always early afternoon. After all, the final scores had to be reported to the Prudential College scoreboard which came on at about 4pm est.

Those were some strange uniforms. Fry's apple green was on the front and the back was a darker green. Of course Fry left and the school changed to a different shade of green. Given the life span and expense of uniforms, it meant that the band was marching around for about 15 years in two shades of green that did not match the existing official green, adorned with a long abandoned flying worm! These things only happen at North Texas.

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

I know the intent was good, but I really despise seeing the flag used in violation of US Code Title 36. We should know better.

DRC: Final Learfield Director's Cup standings are out
letsgiveacheer replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
The point I was making is UNT and many other schools in this region do not offer the same variety of sports that east coast schools tend to do. Conference mate ODU offers 18 different sports. In nearby Newport News, DIII Christopher Newport offers 21. We offer 12. -
DRC: Final Learfield Director's Cup standings are out
letsgiveacheer replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Good post, Video. One of the big shocks I had when arriving at North Texas as a freshman many years was how few sports the school actually hosted. In the east, almost every school had the usual sports plus things like wrestling, soccer, lacrosse, gymnastics, swimming, etc etc. Old Dominion even has sailing, rowing, and a great field hockey program. What the Learfield Cup does show is the regrettably poor shape our entire athletics program is in. Spin it all you want but to be among the very bottom of all D1 schools shows just what an uphill battle we have to face. -
DRC: Looking back at the top 10 games of the last decade

If we are speaking only of memorable games, Portland State will be hard to forget. -
Fans To Vote For Flag Design Outside Apogee Stadium

That's pretty good! 1974 was the only year that Maurice McAdow did not direct the marching band. He turned those responsibilities over to Jim Hansford who was his graduate assistant at the time. Jim instigated the "Mean Green Dollies" who did a dance number during the half time show. I graduated that year and have no idea what happened next. I do know, however, that it was Winslow who watered down the fight song, claiming the original version sounded too "old timey" -

DRC: A look back on the top five coaches in UNT history

I agree about Rust although he also finished with a losing record. Besides, he was the only North Texas coach to be named a head coach of a NFL team...although that could have gone a bit better for him! -
DRC -- Details of Seth Littrell's new contract

Jerry Falwell is holding on line 1. You see, there is some benefit to scheduling Liberty. -
DRC -- Details of Seth Littrell's new contract
letsgiveacheer replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm sorry, but no G5 school is going to gain national recognition due to success on the athletic field. The CUSA conference champion may be known to hard core football fans but that is about it. For example, Boise St has about 20,000 undergrads and we have about 30,000. Yet, according to startclass.com, we had 16K applicants for admission while Boise St only had 8K. The average SAT for a UNT freshman was 1642 and for Boise State, 1525. People say that athletics are the "window of a university" and perhaps there is a bit of truth to that for some of the P5, but for the rest of us, not at all. The fact that our football coach makes twice as much as the president is indeed ridiculous as GTWT said. -
1. The same rationale could be be applied to Liberty unless we are going to start recruiting in Virginia. Come to think of it, it is very probable that we will play Old Dominion in Norfolk in 2018, leaving us with two games in Virginia in one season. 2. We won the Army regular season game last year but lost every game after but one. I guess playing Army caused these losses. 3. Thirty cadets were injured in last year's pillow fight. Have we suffered any injuries following any of our games with Army? I don't recall we have. 4. Please see #1 above. Playing Liberty in Lynchburg does nothing for recruiting. 5. Perhaps, but we are paying a premium salary to our athletic staff and expect better. 6. Yes! I'm looking forward to hearing about this as well. I am still curious if we had to pay Army to get out of these games.

For those interested in Liberty and it's facilities

Yes, that's about the only upside to this series! It is a beautiful region and history buffs will enjoy visiting nearby Appomattox and other Civil War sites. -

Does anyone know if we had to pay Army to get out of these games? -
Here's the link that speaks to this. They say the contract was obtained via North Texas sources rather than Liberty. http://www.aseaofred.com/flames-schedule-football-series-with-north-texas/ As someone said earlier, I suspect WB is friends with someone at Liberty and the deal was sealed during lunch at Lynchburg's fine dining establishment, Olive Garden...where one can get all the salad, breadsticks, and soup you want for $6.99.

Lots of work to do to rectify this
letsgiveacheer replied to untjim1995's topic in Mean Green Football
Good post, Grand. I like football as much as the next guy but this has gotten completely out of hand. There is no valid justification for the excessive money spent on college athletics. Twelve schools out of over 100 pay their own way but the others do this on the backs of students and university support. As someone earlier said, there are also cost savings in the bloated administrative staffs but I suspect those savings are small when compared to the AD budgets. Yet, about 50% of our country's university faculty are adjuncts and even at North Texas, at 23 to1, the student to faculty ratio is among the worse in the country. -
Shouldn't the names be listed alphabetically?
