  1. I'm with you here. The good thing about having Loop 288 is that there are all of the places we're all familiar with there. There's your Starbucks, GAP, Target and whatever familiar big biz stuff you want there. It's also just a few minutes from campus by drive AND also on the Denton bus lines (which are free with UNT id I believe). But, when you hit Fry Street, ideally, there's all of these unique restaurants, bars and shops you won't find anywhere else. I love local places, when I'm in SF or Oakland, I'm not looking for a Chili's, I'm looking for a good, mom-and-pop restaurant or a classy and unique place to eat. That's what's at risk of being lost. Fry would be great all cleaned up, but in cleaning it up, that doesn't mean you can't have unique local places too.
  2. We do have guys like that, and we had another guy like that... "The Mighty" Johnny Quinn and his utterly spectacular 1-handed, mid-air catch in the corner of the endzone from the gifted Scott Hall. Courtesy of the ASU Indian defense, of course.
  3. It'd be pretty backwards if I want to handle art direction on big-name client advertising but hated big business, wouldn't it? No, I just don't think it really belongs on Fry. Starbucks is as generic-chain-business as you can get, and there's nothing wrong with it inherently, but I do understand how people feel about keeping Fry weird. It'd be the same if the weird, small shops in Austin all got replaced the same way. We know the buildings haven't been kept up, but that doesn't mean they can't be taken care of now. Too bad the right inspectors never got to check it out. Ideally, the area could've been saved by repairing the old buildings and cleaning up those terribly nasty nooks and crannies of the area, but that didn't happen. Or at least saving a place for the businesses losing space. There's a misunderstanding about "run-down". Let's go with vintage. Point being, new buildings with modern architecture or even buildings designed to look like vintage buildings (see Southlake Town Center) feel very, very sterile. They're so manufactured and assembly line in appearance because that's what they are. They're the same stores and restaurants you'll find in any town. Another poster said that UNT needs to stand out from the other schools, and if it's got the same Starbucks, etc next to it, that's another selling point the school doesn't have. Students come to a school for more than just academics and athletics, and any unique point about the town that you can sell should be preserved. It's kind of like how Dallas (as much as I like it) pales to Austin in terms of uniqueness. I would've ended up at UT if the people there weren't as cold, the campus weren't as bloody huge, and the cost not as high. UNT's getting a good balance with the art/music program, biz, sciences, arts, and athletics, I think this would help improve it. But please, not another Starbucks...get some other competing company at least It's like Gamestop where's like, 4 of them in 1mi in Lewisville near the mall.
  4. There's charm that's being destroyed (or at least temporarily displaced) by this. I always liked the food at the Tomato, and while I do like J&Js, the square just doesn't lend itself to the same atmosphere as Fry Street used to. I can't really feel like I'm in a slightly run-down part of town with Granny's Ugly Antiques and Granny's Sister's Old People Clothing Store next door. Besides, we have 2 bloody Starbuck's already, we have a Walgreens or CVS or whatever the hell it is. What's next? GAP displacing a tattoo parlor? Making Voertman's move? I like GAP, but that store has NO place in Fry Street. I don't even like having Pita Pit (overpriced, way overrated), Jimmy John's (it's okay but still overrated), or that stupid bank (what the hell? a bank and coffee and Kolache Haus?) on Fry much less a big chain corporate coffee joint. Again, I don't have a problem with big biz, I just don't think we need to turn Fry Street into a mini-Loop288. We don't need the traffic there and there's room enough for more big biz on 288. It's just not right, and there's an increasing challenge for small business owners because things like this.
  5. You just gotta piece together the world through the two eyes and the mouth opening, that's all.
  6. Transportation issues...I'd say Dodge should drive out to get him, but that's probably breaking 1203 NCAA recruiting rules.
  7. Yeah, they tried to do that but I think they weren't allowed to play more than just the first measure...playing just a verse would be AWESOME.
  8. PM sent. I've retired from it, which finally means I can watch a game from the stands and not via the jumbotron!
  9. This is good, this is good! Vizza will really force our current QBs to square up their games in practice. I also have to say that Dodge is absolutely killing it at recruiting this year. He's already brought on incredible talent in just a short time, I'm looking forward to what he can do with a successful football season, a bowl win, SBC ring, and a full recruiting season.
  10. Is it just me, or does it seem like every time I check the board out, some well-skilled kid is transferring, considering strongly, or already committing to UNT? Either way, FREAKIN' AWESOME! Thanks, TD!
  11. I agree. When J-MO was at his prime, our OL was still dominant in the belt and gave him time and good enough blocks to make it outside and turn the corner. He isn't a power-RB, he's a speed-RB and with that kind of guy, you'll need a powerful OL to buy the guy time to make a play. If you look at the big highlights for J-MO from his big year, you'll see that it's mostly plays that bring him outside or plays where there are really, really good blocks made. These last 2 years, he didn't have that kind of blocking or the adjustments weren't made so he never had a chance to make a big play. In short terms, it's not the RB's fault if he gets tackled one step after getting the carry. That's on the OL and the coaches. J-MO still has it, but like talent in anything, it's got to have the right leadership and the right team to use it. Even Cobbs ran into that problem his last year. He's a power-RB and we've seen him hammer through lines before, but an RB can only punch through so many defenders. Proof? Look at the Memphis game. Wilson, and well...probably the entire QB roster was badly worked with, too.
  12. I'm sure he could've waited until he got to his destination. Was the pot THAT good that he had to sneak it onboard? I mean, it's not like he couldn't have had some waiting when he got picked up.
  13. A thanks to those two as well as Dr. Pohl. I remember when I came to UNT in 2000, it still had that ugly funk from Helwig. Then in 2001, it's like the entire tone of the university changed, and that was a start in results from Dr. Pohl and Rick V's work. I'm very glad Rick V. took a chance on our university and that he's still making contributions to it every day he comes into his office. I'm also glad that Dr. Bataille knows, understands, and is in total favor of athletics as a means to represent and promote the university as well. Though, when she said "University of North Carolina band" at my grad ceremony, I wasn't too happy about it. In her defense, she adjusted well, smiled, even chuckled when the joking boos came from the crowds. Good save, Dr. B!
  14. I have to say (again) that I really, really like TD's attitude. He's not complaining about the fans (well, I think everyone who knows he's been hired is all for him), the facilities, or even having to attack recruiting with a late start. I know part of this is his knowing that he'll make or break his NCAA coaching career with his new job, but I also know this is part of his work ethic. Man, it's really exciting to have all of this happen now. It's a great, great time for us fans and I think it'll only get better.
  15. FIU shield logo: UNTD shield logo: The logos are okay. But just okay. Wish they'd chosen something different, but this's (yup) the fault of the wrong people making wrong decisions on the wrong debates. I'm just mad that this mark is too similar to FIU's and the colors too close Southern's.
  16. We do, I've seen their work. Too bad there's certain powers-that-be that feel like stopping the great stuff before it leaves out of the door. BTW, if I can find the shield logo, we'll compare that and the FIU shield.
  17. The colors, the mascot name, one of the logo designs... They're all copies. Way to go, admin staff. Bet those marketing degrees came in handy. At least they look okay.
  18. I only wish I had a podium to bang on and banners with all the MMajor school logos on them behind me. Still, Ohio got SMASHED, hahaha. Looked like a Florida vs F_U game.
  19. No problems with that, but I do wonder what their research said about exchange rates and if there's really enough people with pesos to make it worthwhile. Hence my referring to the Euro, because there's so much border-crossing in Europe that it's basically been a necessity for the last 20 years now.
  20. YES. I felt dramatic this morning.
  21. I've seen the "shield" version of the logo. Looks ALOT like the FIU shield logo, the light even comes from the same direction and the proportions of jaguar/panther head to the shield are remarkably close. It's not a copy-job or anything since the colors are different (UNT-D blue is lighter and has more red in it, and the gold color isn't as dark or brownish as FIU's), animal design isn't the same, and simply because animal heads on shields are pretty common. It was however, not a good decision because UNT-Denton shares conference ties with FIU. Other than the shield looking like the FIU mark, the rest of the stuff is okay right now. There's the shield, a leaping jaguar over an arched wordmark, and a few word/letter marks in the set.
  22. That's because Ohio State was utterly wrecked by Florida. I know why they want to play Boise: Because they think they'll win. It has nothing to do with Florida being in a sham BCS championship game, it has to do with the fact Ohio State not only lost, but was continuously dominated throughout the 4 quarters of play. They lost to Florida as if it was Florida playing FIU, not Ohio State. Did Florida deserve to play in the championship game? No, it didn't look like it before the game, when all of the media-hype was focused on their one loss. But that changed fast once they started to break a good lead on Ohio State. 41-14? Plain and simple, Florida belonged in the game to at least prove that they were better than Ohio State. If anything, Florida and Boise should play. Florida's one loss doesn't count because they flat-out were better than Ohio State. This isn't when Oklahoma U played LSU after losing the BigXII championship game and lost- Oklahoma had no business being in that game and it showed. Florida may not have deserved to play for the national title, but they earned it as they played the game.
  23. What impresses me most is how smart he plays. He doesn't make a bee-line for where the ball carrier is; he tries to make a good guess of where they're gonna be in the next few seconds and then finds a good angle of attack. Whether or not this means a full-sprint, a jog, or just waiting for the ball-carrier, he's right there at the right moment to make the hit. I'm very impressed because all the speed in the world doesn't mean squat if you're not smart enough to use it properly, and this kid is fast.
  24. Breece "The Breeze" Johnson?
  25. Good for them and Florida...don't think this really does anything for our program though. Not yet, at least.
