McCarney should reach out to Chico, first priority. Make an offer to at least say he did and cross that T and dot that I. I'd love to see two minds like these on the same side of the field, and if McCarney doesn't talk to him I also agree that it's a sign that McCarney isn't the right guy.

Projected 2011 North Texas Coaching Staff
meangreendork replied to thecoachingtree's topic in Mean Green Football
I really want Canales to stay here. I really, really do. It'll help the players deal with the adjustment and it'll mean an offensive genius at Assistant HC and a defensive strength at HC. Besides, 2 guys who are balls-to-the-wall enthusiastic at UNT who have a chemistry with each other can be great for us. -
If Canales goes to ULL, McCarney better post a BIG win.
-
UT was trash this year. Shouldn't be hard to accomplish if McCarney can post wins consistently.

Mike Canales Coached His @ss Off Today
meangreendork replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Seriously. What kind of UNT coach goes and promotes football to the fans? You know the fans hate football. This is the toughest job in the NCAA, man. A real coach never comes out from under his rock to do something as selfish as urging people to go to the games! -
1) Worried about this too. He'll have to have one hell of a sales pitch to get the new guys to trust him. Something that maybe shoves the blame on someone else, but I don't see that working. Maybe the "we're all here for the same thing" is the best route to go. 2) I want to give him 2 years to a bowl and 1 year to produce a winning schedule. When a school can cut a coach for being 28-22, we should be able to demand that if a coach doesn't do his job (ensure academic success of his players/WIN), then he has to go. 3) I'm worried that if McCarney is a dud, then the stadium becomes an empty building. I mean, sure, Fouts was often close to empty as well, but it was PAID for.

Mike Canales Coached His @ss Off Today

Anybody get the impression that the decision was made weeks before the KState game and not even remotely taking into consideration the results? In thinking about this, it dawns on me that even if the score tonight was 51-49 UNT, McCarney would still get the offer. -
I would venture that McCarney's sample size isn't that great at all. McCarney probably lost to KState with BigXII players against lesser KState teams. Canales may as well have beat them using a 4th string QB, a strained roster, and a list of injuries with a team he just joined.
-
Screw it, go for 11-1. He'd better have one hell of a plan to beat Canales to the job. He'd also better show some production in high order for the salary he'll be receiving. With Canales, we would've expected 5-7. He would alter his defensive coaching staff and recruit DLs and DBs to beef up the defense. He'd probably continue to build on an already outstanding offense. In year two, we could probably expect 6-8 wins and continued work on an already solid foundation. We know what to expect with Canales. He has the buy-ins of the fans, the media, and most importantly, his players. He's been at all levels of the game, so I don't see how McCarney is better hire. 56-85 in 12 years of head coaching? You would swear that he would turn the corner somewhere and keep it consistent, or at least not take half a decade to start winning. But hey, let's pay a guy $500k and hope he's as good as the guy we already have.

And with all of this, the higher-ups are hoping that McCarney is as good as Mike Canales. How about we stop wondering if McCarney is as good as Canales and just take Canales? It's like wanting a block of wood to become a table when you already have a table. -
Sorry, head coaching experience. My parallel doesn't work well if we're looking at total experience, which McCarney has more of either way, but between the two, I actually feel Canales is the safer bet, or at least the one with higher reward.
-
If this is the guy UNT has hired, he'd better be on a short leash. Like, "If you don't produce 5-7 wins in 2011, you're gone" kind of leash. Side statement - I feel like he could be the Darrell Dickey of the BigXII.
-
I'm not sure what to feel about this. So we have McCarney who has head coaching experience, and 12 years of it. He's seen it all, sudden success and sudden failure. That's good. He can recruit and he can manage and he can motivate. But his record doesn't look good. It took him 5 years to start winning, and even if he did, his record of wins to losses is on the negative end. Yeah, I get that he's done this at a hard-to-work with campus in a tough conference. But I feel like he might be on the way out. We've seen what he's done and it's not that spectacular. This one feels like, "we're hiring to not lose games." Which, I guess is alright, if we win. But if our team loses, then it becomes, "we were too scared to make the big leap." As for Canales, he doesn't have much coaching experience. But we have seen is some incredible potential as a coach. It isn't easy to churn out 2 wins and a near-win against KState in a short span of time like that. Heck, our best coaches here had difficulty doing that in 5+ year UNT coaching careers. Canales did it in about a month, using talent that many thought wasn't there. Yes, we don't know for sure how good he is, but we do know what he can do in a short span of time. Canales is more like, "we're hiring to win." If we win with that, it's great. It paid off. If it becomes a bunch of losses under Canales, then we can say, "we at least took the risk." However - I'll assume the powers that be know something I don't. And as such, I'll look at this and support the decision.
-
I am amazed - going to a BigXII team and matching them shot for shot. That is astounding and it lets you know the sort of potential that UNT has on that roster. I cannot wait to see how that potential can grow and what it can do when it's unleashed next season.
-
Had Canales come in earlier, we would have done 5-6 wins THIS season.
-
Fixed.
-
If we go with McCarney, I'd like to see Canales stay on. McCarney is a defense-minded coach and we really need strength in that area right now. I think Canales has proven that his offensive schemes work, so a combination of the two approaches could be dynamite here.

McCarney had 12 seasons at Iowa State while it was in the Big XII. Years 1->5 were losing seasons. No bowl appearances, of course. This is pretty bad, BigXII Iowa State or not. Years 5->11 were all winning seasons, with the exception of a horrible 2-10 season. 5 bowl appearances, 2 wins. This is a pretty good set of results as a whole. Too bad it took 4-5 years to get 5 years of wins. His final season was a series of losses. In short, McCarney took 5 years to produce 5 years of winning, then he coughed up another 2 losing seasons. That's 7 losing seasons to 5 winning seasons. Yes, I understand that the BigXII is tough and that Iowa State doesn't have the cash behind its football program the other BigXII schools have, but the time it took to start winning could reflect what will happen if he comes here. I don't think we want to wait 4 more years to see winning seasons, especially after the stadium. Sure, it'll be full for 2011 and 2012, but the casual fan won't go to the stadium, fancy or not, if the home team is losing. If it's McCarney, I'm gonna trust the consultants and RV to know a whole lot that I don't.
-
Gagreed. No reason to cut Canales, either. You can look at the last season and see that there's no lacking of a scoring offense, meaning that he's done his job. Factoring in his work in the last few weeks looks better on him as well.

Game At Wrigley Will Have Only One Endzone
meangreendork replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
All I can say is: WTF. I don't even know how this gets muffed in planning stages, especially for teams with fields like these 2 have. -
You have all the class of a 24hour XXX store, man. So let me make sure this is nice and clear since you're riding the slowtrain today. First - Dodge isn't coaching here. You're trying to cut down a tree that's already off to the paper mill. Smart. Second, after a long series of concussions, there's a risk for permanent brain damage, and for some, even death. Let's see you face down family and friends and say you wanna play college ball when there are good odds a hit at the wrong time and place can kill you. Finally, Newton's performed very well in his short career at UT. I don't see a failure on Dodge's part here, and therefore, your entire argument is both dead and was poorly assembled. Great work, kid. You gonna tell us that Troy Aikman shouldn't have retired? That Steve Young should've gone for another 5 years in the NFL? That Muhammed Ali was a failed boxer due to his career not going longer and therefore, his coaches and trainers failed?

I want to see how Canales handles ULM. They are a team that can be beat by his system and his players, so now we see how he'll win. It shouldn't be us waiting to see if he wins. I'd also judge his performance against KState, but I want to be clear - I'm not expecting a win. I am expecting to see him throw all the stops out and hit Kstate with everything in the arsenal. I'm less concerned with the score (a win would be awesome and a close loss is alright, too) and more concerned with how much fire the team comes out there with. If they get bogged down then that's a bad sign. But if the team keeps fighting until 00:00 in the 4th and they have some key plays on both sides of the ball to show for it, I think Coach Canales could be it. However, I want to see him weighed against other coaches. We have to keep in mind that just because another coach may be a "name coach" doesn't mean he'll perform. It could be any number of factors that lead to success - good assistant coaches, or coming into a program that already has great players. Those things can mask over shortcomings in a coach. If Canales can come back with a win against ULM and a strong performance against KState, we know what he can do with someone else's player and coach choices.

If A Wrong Hire Again-Will There Be A Split Down
meangreendork replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
PMG, are you really one to be asking this question? You're partially responsible for some of that same behavior and even more, you've exhibited some yourself. -
They did a shoutout to Coach Dodge. Nice of them. Not bad for something these guys probably put together in just a few weeks. I have a good feeling they recorded it using one of the soundbooths on campus, too.
