  1. Got a mixed feeling on this one. It takes more force to fire someone at UNT than it does to move a mountain. That's good if someone does well with their work but has some terrible co-workers or superiors who want to politick them out of a job. However, it's bad when someone is horrible at their job and is making their co-workers pull slack for them. So if it makes it easier to cut chaff, then I'm for this as long as it also allows more than solid protection against office politicking. I saw that in the corporate world and it's ugly. Really, really ugly.
  2. The same reason that there's the equivalent of the same for the other minority groups, and why there's a Black History month. Because most other organizations probably have a majority of caucasians, because the other 11 months of the year are often spent on history as told by and recorded by (you guessed it) caucasians. It's like "why do we have BET?" Well, because most other networks are dominated by caucasians. The population of the US may be dominated by the total population of minorities, but as far as representation on television, politics, coaching, and in business, the majority of that is still caucasian and there's still some advantage in that.
  3. She's a singer. Not a government official. Not a member of the military. Not a religious figure. Not a philanthropist. Just a singer. She doesn't deserve to have the flag lowered for her.
  4. Not that it made going into Iraq a strategically sound idea. Thankfully, the Iraqi army was more or less in shambles. The actual problem came in the postwar stage, which there wasn't a great deal of planning for. That was the major failing in the start of the 2nd Gulf War. I agree and disagree with this - Al Qaeda might be broken a bit in Afghanistan, but remember that it's also a decentralized group. It's power isn't in having a central command, it's that it's all cell-based, running off of a key ideology (blow up stuff for some bastardized version of Quran interpretation). The Taliban are in a less hostile mood, but there are still problems to be solved in that country. But just like you, I know that occupation is a horribly expensive venture. I don't have a solution there.
  5. I'm still amused that political talk didn't really spike up on the GMG boards until the 2008 election.
  6. Christian Science Monitor picked it up too. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2009/1116/biblical-anti-obama-slogan-use-of-psalm-1098-funny-or-sinister It's all in how the verse is used. As a whole, the verse isn't bad, but when it's down to the widow/fatherless part, and JUST that part, then we have a whole other issue.
  7. No, I do get it and I mostly agree with the sign. I don't really think Jesus would approve of where some of Christianity has gone.
  8. Obama gave the NDA the go-ahead and would've let SOPA and PIPA on through if the public hadn't made a storm about it. So far, he hasn't spoken up about ACTA or any rewrites about SOPA and PIPA. So those are definitely things Jesus would probably have not signed off on.
  9. That question was probably worse than your "politicians are distancing themselves from Christianity" line. Oh, and being from a Christian background, I don't think they are. It's just that when they're abused in a way that divides people, generates ill-will, to steal money from others, engage in corruption, commit hypocrisy, and intrudes on the lives of people who practice something else or nothing at all, or when they're used to rack up votes...that's when I have a problem with them. It's like a firearm. It's not bad in and of itself, it's when it's abused and mishandled - that's when its a problem.
  10. The Democrats, maybe. Not the GOP. Not even close.
  11. No, you're very right about this part. There's a line between, "I think that my ability to keep my job in rural Kentucky shouldn't be influenced by someone gambling with billions of dollars in something that's made to fail all the way out in New York" and, "OMG, I got a degree, why didn't I get hired even if I never did the footwork and phonecalls?!" But that points out a key issue with the OWS movement - it's still lacking a central message.
  12. I have mixed feelings about the ABC piece. See, I think it's important to know that Newt wants to preach about morals and sanctity of marriage while doing almost exactly the opposite of that. Normally, I wouldn't care about his personal life, but because he's living or has lived opposite of the policies he wishes to promote, it becomes a matter of integrity. It's like telling your son not to smoke crack while getting arrested for it 6 times over. The situation really does damage credibility and make the integrity of Newt questionable. But at the same time, I don't think ABC needs to do a huge piece on it, especially since they should also be trying to maintain, or get, a certain level of journalistic integrity as well. Now, they can do a coverage piece on the candidates and point out all of their flaws, but to go specifically after Newt and just Newt, is a low blow, and one that's telegraphed.
  13. Tell that to anyone who started a political thread after the 2008 election. It was a pretty serious cluster up until the last year or so and I'm betting it might kick up again. It only really died down after the board admins put the hammer down about it. It's still there, but you can't pay your dues and earn your stripes without being first hired. TLDR: nice generalization there, kid. Some did make some pretty heinous life decisions or didn't actually attempt to forecast into their post-baccalaureate plans. Hell, some took a lot longer to graduate than expected either by failing or finances, but I think most just want to pay their bills at the end of the month. Those that want a ton more than that without the work would be screwed with or without the financial crisis anyways.
  14. "And in the needlessly painful process, all 38 faculty members in Dallas were canned and forced to reapply for their jobs at a reconstituted UNT Dallas -- including Barfield-Cottledge in March 2010. The move rankled UNT Dallas professors who'd invested years into the institution, fearing that even if they were rehired, they might get demoted in the new regime." Wow. That's outstanding. Go UNT-Dallas. Separate of UNT flagship, right? Also, that letter was horrendous.
  15. It's a pretty serious dick move considering that there was a friendly agreement made, and the people who really are infringing on someone would be Dr. Pepper/Snapple with their fake Dublin formula and packaging. But this the whole part where it's no longer free market at work, it's more like big money at work.
  16. Hahahah, "Diddle Arena."
  17. Hope they got the OK for that Batman music license. Good stuff though.
  18. All the fancy uniforms in the world don't mean jack if the band sounds like ass. I'd rather have a great sounding band playing in shorts in 100 degree heat than a band that would sound okay if they weren't sweltering to death, and didn't sound that good in good weather to begin with.
  19. The article would be great if the bowls weren't rife with some of the corruption talked about in an article in a previous post here. Sounds like a lot of "let the greedy be greedy and lock off the big time from any competition" and, "see what the little guys did, they messed it up for everyone else."
  20. Going vs. LSU is pretty bad. It more less yells out small-time, but having South Alabama and Texas Southern on the schedule not only yells out small-time, but it also damages the strength of schedule. We're supposed to beat USA and TX Southern, winning doesn't count for much and losing does a TON of damage to the team's record and likelihood for a bowl game.
  21. It's a crap situation to be in - you gotta pay X amount to keep a competitive coach, and then turn around and look at this possible $2k/scholarship athlete. Not a good place to be, not to try to keep up with the Joneses.
  22. I've wanted to see our helmets do something like that once the UNT brand is strong to carry like that. Really, I'd like to have seen the wing things on the uniform more if Oregon hadn't beaten us to it already.
  23. I'll get a haircut and a real job someday. Someday.
  24. Reads like a marketing piece to me. "Well, at SMU, we charge this astronomical amount, but that's okay because prices at private colleges only rose half of what they did for public colleges. We'll also hope that you don't remember that it's still almost 2x as expensive to attend a private college in Texas, though."
