If one thing contributed to wins this season, it was conditioning. When every other team was gasping for air, overheating and cramping, our guys were still in the fight and ready for more. It's gotta be a combination of solid endurance training, the right nutrition, in-game care, and player rotation. When we would see Tulsa, Southern Miss, UNLV and almost everyone else gassed out, our guys were still ready to go. Hell, I would be our team still had more in the tank at the end of the 4th than some teams came in with at the start of the 1st. That's a big reason why we would see our scoring go up in the last half and watch our defense really pin their ears back and make plays in the last half.

I'm less concerned with size and more concerned with speed, power, technique and, conditioning. Our previous line went up against bigger teams but was almost always in better condition and had better technique. The new starters should be made up of guys who had playing experience and may have been starters a few times last season. Really, my only concern is long-term, varied experience now that I think about it.

CBSSports.com Final Top 126: A Surprise or 2 For Some?
meangreendork replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Houston fans don't really have an excuse. They've had a good team for at least the last few years, it really is time for them to show up and especially when that new stadium gets built. The fans are just whining and crying over fresh milk in a crystal wine glass. -
SMU was ever in? It's mean coming from us, and having had Dodge and the back end of the Dickey era, but I don't remember SMU ever being a thing since after the Death Penalty and those hookers some guy killed.

UTSA Board: "UNT thinks they can beat the Sith Empire"
meangreendork replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
By that logic, that leaves us a receiver, a trainer, and Berglund's left shoe. At any rate, if there's a year to beat UT, this may be that year. Maybe Strong will have forced out enough bad egg/talented players, caused enough stir in the ranks, and the team will be in enough disarray to get a win. We've got a better team going into UT than I can remember (short of the '88 debacle), they have a new coach, so while it's still a long shot, it's closer than it ever has been.- 40 replies

Strong will do some great things at UT if given the time. Hell, if McCarney left UNT, I'd be yelling and screaming to give Strong an interview here - even if we can't afford him. But if Saban and the other candidates didn't even bother to interview at UT, it's a good showing of how spoiled their booster base is and how dysfunctional the upper workings of UT's program are.

SMU SMU Fans discussing the 2014 UNT game
meangreendork replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I've met SMU students - they're generally nice folks like any college kid would be. None have expressed interest in SMU football. Some in that group weren't sports fans (okay, cool), but many just didn't think it was worth it. Mind you, up until this season many thought the same about UNT football - but I find that once they go to a game at Apogee, they're hooked. I think it's because the newest group of students from the last 5 years has been brought in with a lot high spirits for the school and that translates to pride no matter what's on the scoreboard or in the schedule. So come gameday, that means the sort of deafeningly loud atmosphere for Idaho when UNT went just 4-8 the year before.- 50 replies

I'm cutting them a break for being a private college - they're pretty much stuck at a small overall student population. Which, not surprisingly, also makes it difficult for them to become the team of their city.- 50 replies

UNT vs. UT 2014 UT Fans ready for STRONG showing agin UNT
meangreendork replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
If there's a year to put UT away, this is it. Maybe as Coach Strong weeds out the team, it'll whittle away the skill of the team until better players come into fill the gaps. Yeah, beating UT next season means likely beating a weakened team, but if UT is as good as their fans think they are, they should win. I fully expect the team go out there and beat on UT from the first kickoff to the last whistle. I might even expect a win if I hear about UT players jumping ship or not jelling into Strong's system.- 54 replies

SMU SMU Fans discussing the 2014 UNT game
meangreendork replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Fine, doc. Up until this season. But TCU's done pretty well as a whole for about the last 5 years. They're closer to being the college team of DFW than anyone else, and could lock it in if they figure out how to be more accessible to the average person and start raking in the football wins again.- 50 replies

meangreendork replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
We probably have a greater on-campus and in-Denton student population than their entire campus as a whole. UNT hasn't been a commuter school in at least the last 14 years. The real commuter schools in this area are UTD, UTA, and yeah - likely SMU as well. TCU doesn't fit since it's got a lot of loyal fans and has a lot of athletics success lately.- 50 replies

I just about ruptured a lung with laughter at that comment. SMU isn't winning, is pretty much the symbol of Highland Park affluence and exclusivity, and hasn't been a relevant team. And to get the buy-in of Dallas at large, SMU will have to feel a lot more accessible to the average D/FW-ite. Right now, two college teams have the best odds of being the team of D/FW. One is us, and the other is TCU.- 50 replies

DRC: Breakout season, bowl win change game for UNT
meangreendork replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
More positive talk than before, especially after the bowl game win. The local car dealerships and banks with the giant electronic highway signs are displaying "UNT HoD Bowl Champs" - type messages. It's not at the level of UT crazy, but it's on the way. The bowl win was a big deal, the win over A&M was a big deal and it's paying off. The city already knows UNT is a solid academic institution, the athletic part is now getting some more attention. The DMN and DRC press is really helping it take off. -
I have to give a lot of kudos to the OC and DC for rotating players on and off the field this season. I have to give more kudos to the sports medicine, training and conditioning staff, too. All of those parties came together to make sure that when most other opposing teams were gasping for air in the 4th quarter, dealing with sudden cramps, and showing fatigue-related decision making problems, our guys were sharp all game. You could see it all season from Idaho all the way to UNLV - conditioning and rotation makes a huge difference.

Big thank you to The City of Dallas and an idea
meangreendork replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I'll take Apogee over the Cotton Bowl. I mean, it's a historical site and the Fair Park stuff is a nice thing to see as you walk up, but when it gets down to game time, the acoustics, sight lines ---- really everything else about Apogee is better than the Cotton Bowl aside from capacity. So, to back that statement up - partner with DART and DCTA again. Set up special packages that get fans from the various DART sites in Dallas, up the Green Line, to the DCTA terminal in downtown Denton, on the DCTA buses and onto campus. -
I didn't get a chance to talk with any during the game or on the train ride, but I'm pretty sure they're mad. On paper, they were supposed to be a really good team, but toward the end of the 1st half, their big guys just looked gassed. Maybe it was the time zone or maybe it was bad conditioning, but UNLV was not ready for the game today. Not even close. If I were a UNLV fan and traveled into Dallas, sat in a bowl game that was basically a UNT home game and got blown out, I'd be mad too.

The helmet looked great in person on the field and it looks awesome in the ESPN replay. The carbon fiber with the soft metallic eagle is unreal. I love it.

UNLV didn't brought an ensemble by comparison to our Green Brigade. The Rebel band just couldn't compare to the brigade. Marching wasn't as good, the sound wasn't as good, and the size was really not there at all. Plus, some sneaky UNT fans set up shop right in front of them.
-
He says "never wanting to paint outside the lines" as he's pushing the same interlocking or block lettering style that a long list of other sports teams use. I'll take the diving eagle or "UNT" or "North Texas" over the possibility of people reading "Texas Northern." Plus, the last thing we need is yet another logo to add to the inconsistency of the last 15 years.

Cotton Bowl Stadium: Personal seat backs?

Cotton Bowl Stadium: Personal seat backs?
meangreendork replied to jdennis82's topic in Mean Green Football
Chair backs? We planning to spend the majority of this game sitting? (Unless of course you have to, which is cool. I get that.) -
That's the kicker - the research is incomplete for two reasons - the first is that fracking is relatively new and that recording of data from the sites could stand to be a lot better by both the companies and whomever is in charge of regulating it. So I'm in the boat of getting more data and trying to play it safe until we know for sure. Personally, I could see how fracking/fracking wastewater procedures could cause earthquakes but the info isn't all there just yet. I mean, I'm concerned since buildings in Texas aren't at all built for earthquakes, but that's not nearly as worrisome to me as air and water quality when fracking isn't done properly.

Maybe it'll be the thing that gets Mack Brown fired? Actually, no it won't.
