I would accept a kid who has apologized and is ready to accept his consequences. It sounded to me that he was not trying to spin his actions but that he was ready to be accountable. Many of us (including our politicos) should be this humble. I would be excited if Dodge were to pay this kid a visit. Be careful to throw stones to make yourself look politically correct on this. Blind faith is a scary thing.

The First Opponent In The New Stadium...
kingwoodgreen replied to BIG DAWG's topic in Mean Green Football
It is hard to tell how good programs are gong to be in the future but... Big 12 - Iowa State or Nebraska local - Baylor or Houston maybe utep Big 10 - Indiana or Minnesota Big East -Syracuse ACC - Duke always smu I am a litlle conflicted on big names or winnable games -
Just as in any issue in life self examination is a viable tool. It is best used to break down the problem, find a resolution and correct if possible so that the issue possibly is not repeated. I believe our current financial crisis is a repeat of greed and ethical issues on wall street and our politicians. But that is not my focus for this board but UNT athletics is. Is our problem been a history of leaders that did not value athletics as it rose to big business stature. By that I mean as a strong revenue source for the school as well as exposure. Did we just miss the boat during the time we moved down (IAA) instead of moving forward. How far back did that set us. Too big a hole? We missed conferance affiliations and had a void of vision (and success) that has probably lost many potential alums for good. Or is our problem that we are a liberal arts school that just will never be supportive of a div. 1 caliber program (with all its costs). It has been said before but we do not provide some degrees that graduate donors that some other schools have. Just a fact but I am hoping the engineering program to help this cause. Since we have been a mainly music and teaching school from the past this gives us a disadvantage. Nothing negative about any of this just the facts that relate to $$$ of giving back. Personally I am not sure people should be giving millions of dollars to athletcis programs but we have elevated college sports to this level. Of course this again is an interesting subject itself but one for another time. Related to above. Do we have a student body that just does not relate to what we consider school spirit. by that I mean enjoing going to games, supporting thier fellow classmates in various sports and having pride in our performances. We all see "gameday" as a big deal. And by the way thanks RV for making this happen. On this subject I am least proud of my school when I tend to view the attitude of what I have seen as arguments against the stadium. Yea I did some stupid things back in my day but I was not stupid. Most of the opposition's ranting do make for good debate. Are the the flip side of most schools? 70-30 enjoy their school's athletics, are we 30-70? or some such proportion. If so are we right in trying to make UNT something it is not? Are our current frustrations levels so high because we cannot turn around something that is so far behind. Too many donors disconnected over a span that should have provided for some level of foundation over the last 30 years. Or does our school really value athletics. If we all enjoy our connection with UNT and still would like what all our friends that wnt to UT,a&m, etc have then did we just pick the wrong place? Sometimes I feel that way but when I was entering school in 79 we were coming off of Hayden's success . We were certainly not top 20(but close) but we were not 120. I think given the constraints above RV has one tough job. Even though communication about certain things could be better I believe he may not know just how to tell us how bad things really are. AS far as Dodge is concerned any coach deserves four years probably. This ship is in trouble, but is RV and Dodge to blame for the big picture. I dunno, just thinking as I watch my savings dwindle...

I just got home from the game. I was impressed by our crowd. Lots of green. I had two kids and my neighbors from across the street who are grad. He was a lambda chi but turns out he is a great guy. That is about all the good news I have. Bad news is I cannot ever get back my Saturday afternoon, my 70 bucks and the experiance of my son seeing the worst defensive game I could ever imagine. I cannot spin this game at all. Worst I have ever seen.

Can we accomplish the same theory (no body bag but a viable chance of winning) but not do a FSC team? Army Utep Houston (may not be winnable now but in the future this game needs to happen) New Mexico State or New Mexico Tulane Memphis Wyoming this is where I add East Carolina but not this year, this may be the underdog team of 08 temple Minnesota...

Here are my top three picks for our first game in the new stadium. Texas - no matter what you say, still the quintessentail collage team in our state (best possible upset of all time except I would personally love to beat the aggies most) U of H - this needs to be our annual rivals Iowa - Hayden on the sidelines for them the first half and on ours for the second half comeback victory

I just wanted to also chime in and agree on the Landry's comment. You can find much better in the Houston area. I am not sure any locals eat there. Find a Pappas or maybe somebody more familier with that area can suggest something better. Even though I live in Kingwood we do not venture in the big city much. My son and I ate at a great little pizza joint close to campus last year. It was called Foxes. We ate their before the b-ball game. I am really looking forward to this game. Rice is a very nice campus of course the staduim is a relic of the past as is Fouts. I hope to meet alot of Houston area alums there. I am not sure what their taligating situation is. Rice does not strike me as a tailgate type gameday. They do struggle with attendance. They are still running full page ads in the sports page promoting the smuu game. I bet we could have a dencent turnout with the locale. It was sure fun to see our attendance at the smuu game last year. Alot of green grouped together looked great as I had seats on the wrong side but was proud of the view and heard many comments about our spirit. Most of the alums were spread out but the students were impressive. I hope we all can be in the same sections for Rice.

The Houston Chronicle has an article on a new fund drive to expand Robertson Stadium. This is not tin the sports section, called city and stateI cannot link but here is the jest and quotes; "the school is hoping it can increase attendance at games, RAISE THE SCHOOL'S PROFILE, and even boost it into a more desirable athletic conference." Headline - athletic director says it would boost school's reputation "all the great schools have good athletics" "people have to look at us as, they really do mean this" 38.7 million in which the school will kick in some due to part of it will include things other than athletics, this is part of the end zone

CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SONS Adler most of these guys just do not get it. And for you older guys like myself. SECOND VERSE IS THE SAME AS THE FIRST Not that many "money people" out there are going to contribute to what they see as a student body that does not really care. And belive me we do have "money" people out there. I know many but they have no interest in sending money to what has been an embarrassing athletic history. Even with what I see as an old timer as some great strides and hires we are not going to get many of the old alums back. So we might as well get realistic about going back to that well. If we were to max the fees and get the money needed to fund a good division 1 program then maybe some will see the light. But we cannot carry on with the status quo or we will get the status quo. Somebody has to kick start this program and cash is the way. Time to pull out the stops now. Max the fee, originate an agressive alum donation plan for a mid size kick ass stadium and bring every butt we can to all the games. Dodge can take us to a new level but he needs a staduim and funds. We shuld have been implementing a fee all along and raised it as the years went by and there would not be a peep. Desparate times call for desparate measures. If you think we are not in those times then stick your head in the sand and shout it to the housetops about how your alma mater has a great music program. Feel the pride and then turn on the UT game for some good collage football. Or get the cash in house and stop making excuse that we do not need any extreme fixes. Stop saying we can get by on this so we can be all we can be. Which is probaly a very good mid major program that is a blast to come and see exciting div 1 football (and other sports). We will have a state of the art stadium that includes some new and old traditions. The old golf course should be a great canvas to design the best tailgaiting park in the country. Occasionally we will bring in some fun teams to watch and we will occasionall provide the faithfull with some upsets that will make headlines on gameday. None of this can happen without a financial windfall. If we could all sit down with RV or Todd and have a beer I am sure they would eventuall tell us the same thing. Money cannot buy you a national championship but it can put you swimming with the sharks and that is all I want us to be doing, not hanging with the small fry.

Best Place To Get A Good Meal Before/after A Game?
kingwoodgreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I could not tell you how many chicken fried steaks I ate have eaten at the Charcoal Grill. I had forgotten about that place until you brought it up. It was cheap and great. I was friends with the owners of the NY subway way back. One was local (Ted) and the other was actaully from the NY area. He stayed the owner for quite some time. I got a 13 which was pastrami. I lived in the Sig Ep house back in the early 80's. They would have my sandwich started before I made it through the turnstile. Another popular place was the Cozy Oaks on University. Nemo's sub shop was good as well as Godfather's pizza. Denton county Hamburgers always rocked. They pick up was a great place to take a first date, preferably a new freshman. -
I had a mean green encounter in the Subway in Malakoff, Texas. I eat there often as I am building a waterfront home development on Cedar Creek Lake. There was a couple eating in the booth nearby that I overheard talking about their son. They were talking to someone else about how they had high hopes for next season and about their son moving back from the Air Force Academy. Upon further conversation with them they of course were chuck Peterson's parents. They were super nice and very excited about the team under Dodge. It was nice to hear as I was walking out the door his Mom yell "go mean green" across the restaurant. Kingwood Green

For those of us in the Houston area it was dissapointing to not see us included in the front page article. For those of you not in our area it was a story on Texas basketball success stories this year. It included of course ut and a&m but was mainly on the success of uh, uta, sfa and shsu. Sure would have like to be included in that group but our record did not warrant it.

I drove down from Houston to see this game versus a big 12 team. I got to see us beat Rice last year in a very good game also.I don't care which big 12 team it is they all have big budgets and should out recruit us any day of the week. It was a great game for us I hope the players take this momentum and build. I left north Carrollton around six. I had to pick up my 8 year old nephew to take with me. Butts in the seat and all. We got to the parking lot around seven. I was thinking from the traffic that a sell out was close but it was not. I have been to two of the best attended games at the pit. Our SLC championshsip game and the regional tounament with a & m and North Carolina. The pit crew blew me away. They looked great in all the green shirts. You have to admit the amount of orange present was impressive. We could do better in green but it is probably the best I have ever seen. The cheers were great but the band needs to learn how to end it on a high note. To continue playing until you run it into the ground loses some of the effect. The team. Wooden was a stud. If we had another real good big man we would be a top 40 team. The young guards had no fear and a nice touch (especially at the free throw line). Everyone else looks a little lost, tentitive or just outmanned. When we had the right five we stayed up by 10. The next five we let them get back. But that did make the see saw battle exciting. When they would get close we took control. The end was a little scary but makeing FT's for a change was the difference. Yes it was worth the drive and traffic. From what I heard on the radio we were lucky the game was not tonight.Oh the post game mob was cool to watch. Showed alot of school spirit. Hold on I just said school spirit regarding a NT sports event. Things really are looking up. We have a ways to go but Rome was not rebuilt in a short time. We old timers have to admint things have been worse. Kingwood Green

I will be driving down from Houston for the day. I plan to bring my nephew who lives in Carrollton. I am looking for some others to bring so we will have some more butts in seats. Kingwoodgreen (we have some studs at Kingwood HIgh I hope JJ takes some interest in. The last two went to Arizona and TTech).

A flyover is also in the plans. This game can be special if done right and I believe we will. A sell out is probably a given. Get ready.

Who's The Todd Dodge Of Tx Hs Basketball?
kingwoodgreen replied to Cooley's topic in Mean Green Basketball
The coach here in Kingwood has done very well. Three straight years in the finals. Two losses to Duncanville (this year), a loss to Plano and a win against Desoto. This season they beat Christ the King out of NY and lost to Dematha. Huseman is his name and they play a mean defense. -
I was at that game. even though I am anti-aggie it was great to see Dean Smith lose. He was the father of the four corner stall and I always hated that play. The shot clock later took care of that style of game. UNC had a late lead and went into the stall and it cost them. The pit was packed and had all the atmosphere of the tournament as it is today. They later raided the attendance minimums that put the pit out of contention for further venues. Anytime you get a program like the tarheels in town it was good pr for the school.

I don't pretend to know anything abut this recruit but I do see the bigger picture. He is the icebreaker regardless of how he pans out. Hopefully he is the first of many area locals to consider UNT. This had to happen for us to open the gates. Thats what I am talking (excited about).

Please add me to the list if possible. I do not post much but read every day.

Soon I will be starting my first development. It is 14 waterfront homes on Cedar Creek Lake. I also have a mosquito misting systems business out of my home in Houston and I also rep for the manufacturer. Our family sold our electrical supply business (Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Atlanta and New Jersey) a couple of years ago. I have been also trying to build an indoor sports facility with indoor soccer and basketball for several years now.
