Props to Vito An Explanation on Crazy Sub Pattern
Cooley replied to MeanGreenHoops's topic in Mean Green Basketball
This can't be accurate as I have seen Benford pull folks who were playing well. (or not in the game long enough to make a mistake) This is a coaching style seen often with inner city HIGH SCHOOL basketball coaches. This drives me nuts. Based on Benford's logic, we should be undefeated because the guys left in the games are playing well. What if RV pulled coaches out the first time they made mistakes. The only game in town left to watch would be intramurals in the men's gym or field next to Fouts. In the history of all of college coaches, no one has ever done this. Why should RV trust that this will work for a first time coach? I want to give this guy time (perhaps because he is contractually bound to us) but if he ain't winning, he should break Shanice's record for shortest involuntary time in Denton, TX. -
ESPNU is working on a possible doubleheader in the metroplex on December 13th. Chicago Simien was scheduled to play Plano Prestonwood but ESPNU decided to drop Prestonwood after the injury to national recruit Julius Randle (and super 6-7 soph Mickey Mitchell) What is currently being discussed is a game between Simien and DeSoto (Matt Jones, Duke signee). Dallas Kimball (Keith Frazier) is schedule to open up against Greg Wesley's Arlington Sequin. Not sure if both games will be televised. Discussions are ongoing.

So does half the team

This team seems all screwed up from being overcoached by Benford and staff. His constant rotation is an example. The worst thing that happened this year was when the NCAA allowed coaches to conduct 2 weekly practices during the summer. These guys had developed better chemistry on their own from last year and during off season pickup games. Every offensive play is a struggle and they are very uncomfortable with their defensive assignments. This time last year we would have seen at least 10 ally oops from Chris Jones to Jorgan and/or Mitchell. I can't recall any thus far. Another example of overcoaching is moving your huddle out toward the free throw line during timeouts. (3,000 folks in the building) Why? These guys are having to think too much instead of playing naturally. They don't know who's going to be in the game, how long and what their individual responsibilities are. We have some athletes on the team but most aren't great basketball players. It seems our early disappointment is from the Rival ratings and You tube video's. We have lost to teams with less pub but better basketball players. As been stated, Benford is not going anywhere anytime soon. I just hope he can find an 8 man rotation that he can live with and allow those guys suffficient time on the floor together. (A rule of thumb coach is to not take a guy out unless he is tired or in foul trouble)

If Holeman is not open for a shot he is a liability. I don't know if it matters much who starts since Benford substitutes every minute. Not a Coleman fan but I would like to see more of him at the 5 with TM at the 4. (Just to see what we have). Would like to see more of Overlander against zone defenses. (especially when the other guys aren't hitting) Like you, I would GIVE the starting point guard position to Hardwich. The offense seems to flow smoother with him than Jones. He's not going to score much but I think he is better getting the ball to the scorers better. With Chris, the other guys aren't sure what he is going to do. Don't know if Patton is totally back but I would like see more of him Hardwick Alzee Patton Mitchell Coleman

The goal of a coaching staff (especially with a team as bad as ours) should be to upgrade the roster wherever and whenever we can. I know its still early but will Trice make 1st team all-conference? Until there are skins on the wall, all jobs should be open.

Congratulations to the Moving Mavs. The best team won tonight!

Saw Zach and family Saturday night in Duncanville; watching his younger brother play (freshman). Zach commited to Kansas as a freshman and needless to say, oversigned. Never thought he'd even make it to Kansas as he was better player as a freshman. Don't mean to be too harsh but I'd pass. Unfortunately for him, and other local hopefuls, SMU has turned up their recruiting significantly since Brown took over.

I would like to see more quality and not quantity. (Running back is a perfect example) I'm not worried as much about getting up to the 85 scholarship limit if guys aren't good D1 prospects. A boat load of our scholarships have gone to walk ons. This translate to a bad football team without talent. (Yeah, I know we needed numbers) Do we have any potential All Conference running backs on the current roster? Of the commits we have so far, are any of them potential all conference type guys (in 2-3 years) Our hope lately has been in hoping they get on the field in 2-3 years. We need the biggest, badest and quickest defensive lineman we can get to play in September 2013. If this requires 5-6 Juco's then we need to go in this direction. I get the thought of building with high school kids, This assumes we are getting our fair share of good ones. (and we aren't) I'm tired of new coaches taking 5 years to put a better product on the field. We aren't exactly playing in the Big 12 or SEC. Enough of the bs about how much we are improving and what we inherited. To finish my rant, please don't recruit any more projects with what is left. If guys aren't ready to contribute as true freshmen or after a redshirt year, don't recruit them. The time to win is now. We should be at a point where 5-6 high major recruits are looking to transfer back to the metroplex for more playing time. It shouldn't take much effort by the coaches to answer the telephone. Signed Tired of excuses

VERBAL - 2013 HS - Greg Wesley 6'7" SF
Cooley replied to Cooley's topic in UNT Basketball Recruiting
Wesley had 17 last night against a much shorter West Mesqute squad. Sequin played much better than their loss earlier in the week to SGP Recap from the Hoopfest: http://hoopmixtape.com/2012/11/julius-randle-showcases-his-crazy-athleticism-at-hoopfest-thanksgiving-hoopfest-recap/ -
Hopefully the team shows up

Not a good signing for SMU. They lost their entire offense line last year and their best players this year are seniors. Not too impressed with the recruiting class for 2013 so far. May end up in a bowl this year because CUSA is so bad.

VERBAL - 2013 HS - Greg Wesley 6'7" SF
Cooley replied to Cooley's topic in UNT Basketball Recruiting
SGP hits a 3 at the buzzer to win 55-52. Wesley ended up with 8 points (1 mid range jumper and 3 put backs) I was overall dissapointed with his effort last night on the defensive end; considering that their 6-7 transfer center from Plano West (and ULL commit) is not eligible yet. (on the bench but not in uniform) 6-5 TCU commit Brandon Parrish was their entire offense. Wesley is a very athletic complimentary player. He's excellent around and above the rim but does not have the overall offensive game to be a factor. Both teams, by the way, are ranked too high in my opinion. Sequin plays a very good West Mesquite team Saturday night in the 4th annual Thanksgiving Hoopfest in Duncanville. 7:00 pm tipoff for anyone interested. -

JJ should have gone in another direction with this scholarship. Having said that, Overlander did impress this poster with his outside shooting in high school. Though he did play the center position at Argyle, he was able to roam outside and consistently hit the 3. He is what I expected, (12th or 13th guy on the roster) with a remote chance of moving up the depth charts next year with TJ Taylor added to the mix. Probably oversigned and should seriously consider a smaller program for meaningful playing time. (though I know UNT is his childhood school) For the record, Argyle was/is not your normal rural small high school playing exclusive rural schools. 3A ball today (in Texas) is very competitive with a great deal of talent. Argyle actually destroyed the Dallas schools in route to the 3A title last year, in which Clarke was 1st team all-state and tournament MVP. Most urban schools across Texas are moving down to 3A and don't lack for D1 talent. Most of the inner city schools in Houston have move down. I expect Dunbar in Ft. Worth and more Dallas schools within the next few years. Overlander also gained significant experience playing AAU. His Flower Mound Marcus team won the National AAU Championship a year ago; going up against the top talent in the country. Clarke played the 2 and 3 position. Not a huge fan, but since we signed the kid, let's see what he can do now, before league games. If he does not come around, I'm sure Benford may decide to keep his options open down the road based on need and who comes available. Not popular, but we have to come to grips with the reality that the kids we love are bottom line employees to many in the big business.

Norris is from Hobbs, NM. The coaches are very close with his family. Grades will be the only thing to keep him out of Denton.

Wednesday, (November 14, 2012) is the start of the early signing period (through November 21st) for Men & Women's Hoops. Decided to take a short drive down south today to Corsicana to watch Norris' Midland Chaps play Trinity Valley in the first game of a doubleheader. Norris is trying to get his grades in order and I'm not sure if he will sign early or not. On the court today, Norris had 4 points with about 10 minutes left in the game when I left. Not a great player but may find time in the rotation. Didn't start and only played about 2 minutes in the first half. Coach inserted him in the game with about 9 minutes in the first half and pull him 1 minute later. Came back later in the half and was pulled again after about 1 minute. Didn't score or take a shot the brief time he played in the first half. Started the 2nd half and played with alot of energy. Missed 1 outside shot badly but came back with the dunk of the game about 3 minutes later. Kid caught a pass right under the goal and quickly went up with a windmill left handed dunk. Missed the only free throw he attempted. Despite not playing much he appeared to be a leader on the floor. Hustles well, good passer and unselfish. Midland didn't have a lot of height so Norris played against a taller 4 but switched to the 3 at times. He will have to play the small forward position here as he does not have the bulk or strength to bang inside. Overall, will not be an impact guy for us but should see the floor. Jerion Henry, former Kimball All-State forward and Jordan Williams' teammate, was in street clothes on the TVCC bench. Henry verballed to USC in high school but didn't have the grades and ended up at some prep school last year (I think). Verballed or signed with OU earlier this year. Anyway, not sure if he was joking but he expressed some interest in UNT on twitter his senior year. There was some discussion on here that 2-time state tournament MVP, Shannon Lilly of Dallas Kimball was considering walking on at UNT. Anyway, Lilly plays for Navarro. Had a very brief chat with him prior to their game against Texas Wesleyan's (JV) .

Where would a win over Creighton rank in UNT Basketball history?
Cooley replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Spud verbally committed to play for Coach Blakeley. Blake was fired and we brought in Tommy Newman. Newman felt that Spud would not fit into his slow ass brand of ball. Spud went on to Juco before signing with Jimmy Valvano and North Carolina State; winning a National Championship.and having lucrative NBA career. Newman was fired after failing to ever get the ball up court.
