In the heart of recruiting season
-
I stated last year that Tony was no where near NBA ready and should stay in college for four years. If he has good advisors, they should tell him the same. The Benford factor and money may push him out sooner. Tony is a very athletic COMPLIMENTARY player. As correctly pointed out in the article, he is not a go to guy. When Benford finally figures this out, the team will be better. Unfortunately, we don't have a go to guy on this year's team. This is the basis of our struggles. TJ Taylor is that type of guy but we will have to wait next year.

2013 Commit #1 Sed Ellis OLB Paris HS 6'3 200lbs
Cooley replied to All About UNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
It depends on what your expectations are. I personally would like a recruit to come in and help us immediately. (at this point of McCarney's tenure) As you know, we have not won around here in quite some time. Since he is a high school kid, the chances are great that he will redshirt. The next question becomes will he be able to help us as a redshirt freshman? Don't know. What I do know is that we are asking a lot of him to accomplish before he will be able to hit the field. (Gain considerable weight, reaquant himself to a position that he has not played in over a year and perform at a higher level than what he was exposed to at Paris) My desire would have been to 1) sign someone who has the size right now; where we don't have to worry about weight gain. 2) Someone who has played the position and excelled in high school and 3) Sign someone who has played at a higher level of ball (assuming everything else was equal) My bigger problem is with the coaching staff. Where is the sense of urgency to win next year? To put the best guys on the field next year. We are approaching year 3 of 5 of coach McCarney. Could he have not offered this kid so early in hopes of landing a more established linebacker? Another possible transfer (for the following year) or another Juco? I understand the concerns with Juco's but they are just as great with a project high schooler that's on the books for 4-5 years. Recruiting comes down to probabilities as taught in a statistics class. Am I better off with a smaller (height) and slower prospect who was a great high school linebacker or a potentially great college linebacker if he gains weight, muscle and learn a new position? Too may unknowns. If this was Mac's first class, I wouldn't have as great of a problem with the signing. Not knocking the kid (or certainly not my intent) I just don't think we need, at this time, kids that we will have to wait for (and then hope they pan out). I'm sure many, like you pointed out, are fine with this commit. My desire and expectations in recruiting is to see a quicker return on my investment. (When my recent investments have been poor) -

1st team all-district defensive end (District 13 3A). Everybody and their mother made all-district for Paris. http://www.theathleticsdepartment.com/football/honors/UIL-All-District-13-3A-Boys-30415/ -
The conclusion of the football season! Seriously, the excitement (at the time) of men's hoops recruiting and the pending season.

2013 Commit #1 Sed Ellis OLB Paris HS 6'3 200lbs
Cooley replied to All About UNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I had always wanted an excuse to see Allen's new stadium and decided to attend Paris' playoff game there against Kaufman. (Mid November) Ellis was a non-factor on the defensive line. A few fans I talked to had never seen him play linebacker. His listed 200 pounds was generous. I really like how recruiting has picked up lately but Ellis was one of our first commitments. In my opinion, he will have to gain alot of weight over the next 2 years just to be worthy of a D1 scholarship. Whether or not he can play the positon is another issue/concern. -

Craig Robertson Cleveland Browns Interview
Cooley replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Could have been a low major basketball player in college. Named All-tournament in Austin at the State Tournament. Hopefully Jarian Roberts can follow his lead as a two sport star. -
Saw Kimball against SOC in week 10. Don't remember if Howell played at all but he certainly didn't play on defense. #55 in the video is Justin Manning, #1 defensive lineman in the state that committed to A&M. Another name for UNT to consider is SOC's McKendric McKenzie, DE/DT (6-3, 250) Kid is athletic enough to be a pretty good basketball player; similar to Booger Kennedy. Others around the DISD: Montrez Blackwell, 6-1, 280 - Dallas Madison Chris Blair, 6-1, 280 - Dallas Madison Cameron Pierson, 6-3, 290 - Dallas Roosevelt Abe Perkins, 6-2, 275 - Dallas Wilmer Hutchins Kevonne Pierce, 6-3, 275 Dallas Wilmer Hutchins Draven Taylor, 6-2, 280 - Dallas Adamson Jason Adams, 6-2 270 - Dallas Carter Joshua Pitts, 6-2, 288 - Dallas Carter Edward Victorian, 6-5, 305 - Dallas Kimball Darnell Anderson, 6-2, 274 - Dallas North Dallas Bryan Williams, 6-3, 290 - Dallas SOC Samuel Tatum, 6-2, 275 - Dallas Conrad Eddie Day, 6-2, 285 - Dallas Hillcrest Jose Barjas, 6-2, 280 - Dallas Thomas Jefferson Billy Joe Washington, 6-2, 255 - Dallas Lincoln Donavan Salinas, 6-4, 270 - Dallas Samuell Marcus Hernandez, 6-4, 290 - Dallas Spruce Everado Enriquez, 6-2, 270 - Dallas Woodrow Wilson Juan Torres, 6-3, 265 - Dallas Skyline Deshaun Lawson, 6-3, 270 - Dallas Skyline Kerrick Huggins, 6-4, 280 - Dallas Skyline Vinceion Johnson 6-3, 325

SMU Shows Dominance and Progress in Hawaii
Cooley replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
The Ponies did look impressive last night. Marcus Hunt will be the steal of the 2013 NFL draft. Hopefully the Dallas Cowboys will seriously take a look at him in the first round (stock rising) and possibly Zach Line in a later round. Hunt reminds me of JJ Watts (Houston Texans) that we passed up for Tyron Smith. Smith's a good player but we needed help at the defensive end spot more. UNT will have the psychological advantage against SMU. This is the main reason they have avoided playing us and you can't blame them. UTA continues to kick our ass but we still feel superior. We've been talking about this series for the past 2-3 years. Not sure SMU fans are even aware of the upcoming series. We need to continue to take care of what we can control at North Texas (better recruiting) and stop hating on SMU. I actually feel that good football in Dallas in better for North Texas as well. -
What's the latest update on the hotel? Is it still planned for the Apogee side? Fouts make more sense. Last update I read was that they were on the 5 yard line with the city. I-35 construction starts next summer (at least in some areas between Dallas & Denton) We may not be winning a damn thing but the facilities are looking up.

Southwest Roundup : North Texas Rebounds to Surprise Texas Tech Running back David McGinty raced 20 yards for a touchdown to cap a stunning second-half comeback Saturday night and propel North Texas State from a 24-10 halftime deficit to a 29-24 victory over Texas Tech at Lubbock, Tex. Quarterback Scott Davis, who scored once himself, guided the North Texas 63 yards in 6 plays and sent McGinty spinning around right end for the winning touchdown with 3:54 remaining. Davis sparked the pivotal drive with a 27-yard pass to split end Thomas Greene for the Eagles, ranked No. 5 in Division I-AA. Field goals of 51, 55 and 46 yards by Keith Chapman and a 46-yard touchdown run by linebacker Rex Johnson with an intercepted pass kept North Texas close until the Eagles' closing heroics stopped the favored Red Raiders. The comeback overshadowed a good performance by Texas Tech wingback Wayne Walker, who turned 2 passes into touchdowns and gave him a total of 184 yards on 5 receptions. "These kind of wins are so hard to come by for our football program," North Texas Coach Corky Nelson said. "It's not very often that we can go on the road and beat a Southwest Conference school with the tradition of Texas Tech." Nelson admitted Walker's electrifying touchdown in the opening seconds made it appear the Eagles were in fro a tough evening. But, Nelson said, the turning point may have come when cornerback Kim Phillips was put in to defend against Walker in the second half. Walker, after gaining 163 yards in catches in the first half, got only 21 the second half. Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes said that the Raiders had plenty of scoring opportunities but "just couldn't ring the bell."

He's ok but too small for LB. Saw him last week in Midlothian against John Tyler. Blew a coverage late to help JT erase a 19 point deficit with 6 minutes remaining in the game. Guyer's blue chip QB, Jerrod Heard, single handedly snatched victory from defeat in the final minute. (Most incredible game I have ever witnessed) Across town, Denton Ryan has two really good Defensive Ends coming back next year. Hope the UNT staff can get in early on that pair.

Dilonga was not a player in high school. Maybe he can help by his junior or senior year. I don't know why we didn't go heavier in the Juco's. I get the concern about the impact on the program 2-3 years down the road; in terms of numbers. We've had 2 generations of freshmen graduate without seeing a winning product. Why worry about the next 2-3 years? The conference realignment will not end any time soon. We need to win now! We are still a bad football team. The administration owe it to long suffering fans to put the best product out on the field next year. Our HS recruiting continues to suck and we end up stuck with bad players for 4-5 years. I really like the signing of Brown (DE). Building a championship team starts on defense. In particular, the front four. Maybe we can continue to build on recruiting next year. (or the next year, or the year after that until UTA get's their program up and running)

UNT lands JC offensive lineman Justin Manu
Cooley replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I think Coach Benford could use some of the extra's to use as part of his rotation. -
Glad to see Rice on the list; grades should not be a problem. (assumed when the TV guys said no offers) I don't know what's going on behind the scene on Bonnie Brae but to pass this kid up for a smallish Louisiana kid would appear to be a mistake. Moreover, ULM taking a another player from our neighborhood.

Man, I think what the last 8 years shows is how horrible the Sunbelt was during our so called "Glory Years" under Dickey. Practically all the schools in the new Sunbelt, other than North Texas, were start ups, hadn't started a program or had been playing D1AA ball. All have since past us by (including Dickey's last 2 years) When you throw in our out of conference record under Dickey, it gets worse. Looks like Todd Dodge didn't set this program back. He just didn't advance it. We may have already enjoyed our best days under McCarney. Tulane, of all people, saw us coming to CUSA and they jumped ship. Gotta laugh to keep from crying.

I've heard the 1st game is @ 6:30 on ESPNU and the nightcap is on ESPN

No wonder the bad start! Hell, our guys are spending too much time in the library instead of the gym. I knew we'd miss JJ.

"Taylor Young might pass Zach Orr as the best linebacker I've coached at DeSoto," Mathis said. "He controls the defense. Everything goes through Taylor." http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/high-schools/football-news/headlines/20120526-coach-claude-mathis-desoto-has-best-spring-game-in-five-years.ece
