  1. Didn't locate when the HOD game will be played. So we are now up to 40 bowl games; where only about 46 schools don't go to a bowl. I remember our 9-1 team in 1975 (ranked 17th during the season) that wasn't invited to one of the 10 or so bowls during that time. Don't know what's worse, the number of college bowl games or 4 high school teams going to the playoffs in each district (with 2 state champs in the upper classifications)
  2. Curious to know when this bowl will be played next season. The new college championship semi-final games (Rose & Sugar) will be played on New Years day.
  3. Hall was a lightly recruited and lightly regarded DB that played some QB. Don't remember him being on anyone's top lists. I remember posting his commitment on this board and his commitment went mostly ignored. I'm also on record as saying that in some games, he looked like a DB playing QB.
  4. I know most won't agree with me but I have no problem with trying to score on every play/possession.. the only exception is when your opponent is too small or old or young. Make sure you play all you guys though. Walk off the field as you must but take that ass whipping like a man ..bother' s me more to whine about it..
  5. North Texas has had a great walkon program for as long as I can remember.
  6. Solid representation of future Mean Green ballers http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/high-schools/boys-basketball-news/20140108-dallas-area-schools-combine-for-40-mcdonald-s-all-american-nominees.ece
  7. I am not as big a fan of Nick Orr as everyone else. Saw him get beat too many times and not make tackles against bigger receivers. Allen is state champs because their receiver got 5 yards behind Orr and Howard Wilson (La Tech) with Desoto up by 15 with 7 minutes to play. That turned the momentum around. As for White, who probably want sign with us, would have played some wildcat QB for us but probably not in the Big 12 at TCU. He would be a defensive coordinator's nightmare not knowing if he would run or pass. He would certainly be the best running QB on our roster. Orr is a dime a dozen. Fonzale has had very limited return action. (kickoffs or punt returns)
  8. He is not a tackle and he is on record as saying that he does not want to be someone's 2nd choice.
  9. Chris was actually a junior this year and wore #35 as well. A lot can happen between now and next season but he is no where near the player Zach was in HS or size as you mentioned. I think Desmon White is also a soft verbal to TCU.
  10. The quarterback will always (or should) be a team leader. I think Darius Terrell will step up his game and show upper class leadership, having transferred from UT. I also expect true freshmen Tee Goree and Xavier Washington to command respect, at some point in the season. This, of course, is assuming Washington finds his way to Denton. The obvious choices will be the senior Offensive Linemen.
  11. Not quite the same but Cam Feldt was a state Top 100 as well as Darius Terrell and Anthony Wallace.
  12. This patience offense is killng me! If Benford is going to sub 3-4 guys every 2 minute he needs to employ a more up tempo style to take advantage of this depth. Chris Jones is totally lost and ineffective, as well as the other guys, in this offense. Regardless of how inferior the opponent, they will always stay in the game with this pace. If he desires to play this style, he certainly needs to shorten his bench and allow the guys to get comfortable playing together. Voss is ok but he is not a center. Our big men were on the bench and not able to get stops nor 2nd chance opportunities for rebounds (offensive) Unfortunately, we are absent of a speedy true point guard that looks to penetrate and kick the ball out to the shooters. To be that guard, he must be able to hit the outside shot more consistently than Chris or Alzee and break down his defender. There doesn't seem to be a purpose on each possession. Guys pass the ball around until the shot clock runs down prior to taking a shot. Coach Benford, please keep TJ Taylor and Maurice Anfiak (sp) on the floor until they pass out! Keep Flash off the floor. Keep a big man in the game at all times (Gaines or Coleman) Push the ball up the court on each possession. Damn!
  13. SMU has the money and/or resources to invest in a 40+ million dollar renovation and pay a "Coach in Waiting" Tim Jankovich $700,000. The Super Pit is still not bad. SMU actually lost seating with the renovation. It doesn't bother me what SMU is doing in hoops because It does not affects UNT as much as it would in football. The AAC is a basketball league. (albeit, not the original Big East) SMU has to attract national recruits to stay competitive. SMU is already recruiting a different recruit than we are. I wouldn't worry too much. We just need to win our conference or get to the tournament. Kids want to play. We offer most kids that opportunity. And, as long as Benford is the coach, everybody will get to play. There will always be enough Jeremy Combs and Greg Wesley in Dallas for us to attract. Tony Mitchell was the exception. Additionally, we provide a great opportunity for big time transfers. For now,we just can't have UTA, UTSA and similar programs pass us.
  14. How disappointing it would be to learn on National TV that the kid chose someone else?
  15. That's part of the problem. Looking at stats instead of watching the actual players/games and understanding the different era's. Derek Thompson just finished playing 13 games. (12 regular season games, instead of 10, and a bowl game) 50% of teams today play an extra game because of the ton of new bowls added since the 70-80's. (compared to maybe 10% back in the day). Though Ken Washington (1972-1976) is legitimately in the Hall, they only played 10 games in 1975. (I believe 1 year, the team only played 9). A few years before, freshmen were not even allowed to play. Wasn't that long ago that every offense in America ran the ball more than throwing it. (with the QB under center) In fact, the saying was that if you threw the ball more than 30 times, you were losing. Can anyone see Thompson under center a whole game? How about running the wishbone or veer? You can't compare stats from different era's; where everyone today runs the spread offense with the QB in the shot gun and at least 4 Wide Receivers. I came on board in 1975 (Hayden Fry) when Ken Smith and Glen Roy were the 2nd and 3rd string QB's to Ken Washington. Glen Roy was a Derek Thompson clone. (but 3rd string) Jordan Case, another legit Hall of Famer was the backup to Washington the next year or two. His numbers would not compare to any modern QB because of the systems in place and the number of games played. (Ramsey was before my time). I'm not trying to knock Derek Thompson but to compare him to Ken Washington, Jordan Case and Steve Ramsey, Please!
  16. Our Hall of Fame is so watered down that I can't disagree with anyone going in anymore. Derek is the perfect example where after his first 3 seasons, most on here wanted anyone else to win the QB job. Our great coach even stated that the job was wide open going into the spring. Derek won the job and didn't suck as bad as we thought during the season (with the best offensive line ever) Now he is Hall of Fame material. Other programs would laugh at the thought but not at North Texas. .
  17. I don't get why folks continue to blame Dodge for "running the team in a ditch"; instead of the folks that hired him. He was a high school coach. How many other programs in the history of college football have hired a HS coach? (maybe a handful) We thought we could go cheap and hire a highly successful HS coach (with a joke of a budget) and be successful. He had to bring in other HS assistants coaches because that is what the budget would allow. (60-80k) If RV was responsible for the hire, RV is the person who ran the program in the ditch. Dodge, in my opinion, does not deserve much of the criticism he continues to get years later. We got what the hell we paid for. We actually need to thank the man for the bulk of the key recruits from the current team. I'm actually still waiting for McCarney to top what Dodge (and Dickey) were able to do without all the resources he enjoys today. Can we finally get a quality QB or DL?
  18. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/high-schools/football-news/headlines/20130206-dallas-area-top-100-recruiting-rankings-am-pledge-myles-garrett-jumps-coppell-s-solomon-thomas-for-no.-1.ece
  19. Saw the replay of the game yesterday. They put up a graphic that stated that he had 14 TDs on the season and 13 Int's. That can't be correct, right?
  20. Didn't make sense to try to ice the kicker attempting a 53 yard fg into the wind. I don't understand why coaches do that. I also don't understand why coaches use a timeout to avoid a delay of game penalty when you are punting the ball on the opponents 40 yard line. You actually need that 5 extra yards to avoid kicking the ball in the end zone. (Which our guy kicked it in the back of the end zone) Anyway, great win for the program!
  21. I don't think there were more than 600 UNLV fans there. The HOD must do a better job in its selection of opponents. I thought the UNT crowd was great. And, we have so much more to do in the metroplex.
  22. I think we caught a break playing in the HOD against Las Vegas than going to the Liberty against Miss. St. Hopefully we can build on this as Mac said during the trophy presentation.
  23. Worst coach in program history? Didn't this guy recruit a majority of the key players on this 8-4 team? Was he and staff paid anywhere near what this staff is paid? I don't know where he should rank but he certainly didn't get near the support this current staff has been afforded. This slap at Dodge sure seems personal! Geez, potential coaches and their families read these message boards. Bob Tyler Dennis Parker Rod Rust Tina Slinker Shanice Stephens Gene Robbins Judy Buckles Tony Benford Tommy Newman Vic Trilli
