Just don't think he's a D1 mid-major. Was shocked when SMU offered. Dropped too many passes and only made the easy catches. I would prefer LaDaryl Blair over him but he committed early to Boise State. I think I only missed about 4 games this year. He was just OK but nothing special. There was a noticeable drop off at the WR position behind JF Thomas. GMG24, do you scout for anyone in particular of just as a hobby?

Took in his game tonight against Grapevine Faith Christian(in Grapevine) Triple-Double 41 points 25 rebounds (Est.) 12 blocks (Est.) Still raw but should be a damn good player before his career is over at UNT. Of course its hard to judge a kid going up against smaller/bad competition but he has the tools to get much better. Looks like he's picked up about 15 pounds since I last saw him. (About 6-11, 240) Very nice left handed hook near the basket. Will probably be about a 68-70% foul shooter. Plays with his back to the basket. Good mobility up and down the court but seemed somewhat winded at times. Hopefully we can find an impact Juco big man to start; so we want have to throw him to the wolves so soon.

Too bad. From what I have seen, he's much better than Cedar Hill's 4th receiver -

Too early in the season to declare Combs the top freshman. I've seen too many games (HS) where he struggled mightily against taller/stronger big men. When he committed, I stated that he reminded me of Kenneth Lyons. Lyons continued to gain weight and muscle. He also improved his outside shot. Combs is just not there physically and is not a threat at all away from the basket. His bad free-throw percentage will continue to hurt this team. Hopefully, when we get the 6-11 Brice kid in here next year he'll be more effective. Also, our point guard (Reese) will be able to penetrate much better than what we have now and dish off to Combs and others. My Top 10 1. Ronnie Morgan - Dallas SOC (97-98) 2. Kenneth Williams - Dallas SOC (74-75) 3. Kenneth Lyons - FW Trimble Tech (79-80) 4. Tony Worrell - Goldsboro, NC (84-85) 5. Josh White - Baton Rouge Christian Life (07-08) 6. Jesse Ratliff - Biloxi, Miss (90-91) 7. Chris Davis - Dallas Kimball (98-99) 8. Leonard Hopkins - Dallas Lincoln (00-01) 9. Pat Hicks - Houston Madison (79-80) 10 Jason Miller - Livingston HS (99-00) Next 5 Deginald Erskin - Gonzales HS (98-99) David Miller - Lancaster (94-95) Quincy Williams - Midwest City OK Carl Albert (04-05) Sean Riley - Houston Madison (95-96) Fred Mitchell - Amarillo Palo Duro (74-75)

Hoops/football recruiting notes (Wheeler to Texas Tech)
Cooley replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I didn't quite understand that quote either. I don't remember him from last year but I know he was their starting center every time I saw them this past year. They (Allen) deserve credit for their back to back to back season but I would love to see what a more talented Desoto or Cedar Hill squad could do with 6,000 students. -
Derek Thompson, (and all other quarterbacks in the modern era) should be putting up larger numbers based on the spread offenses which didn't exist back in the day. Before Texas Tech (college) and Southlake Carroll (High School) and others, most schools ran the ball 60% -70% of the time. You CAN NOT use passing statistics to compare or rank quarterbacks from different era's. If anyone insists on using passing statistics you must include their INT's as well. Dan McCarney is as conservative as they come but he was more conservative with Derek Thompson. For 3 years, Derek was a turnover, sack or bad throw waiting to happen. This coach did not trust him and this board rightfully bashed him after most games. How in the world is he now a "Hall of Famer" is beyond me. Using only passing stats (in rankings) as an argument is not fair or accurate journalism. Any 4-year starter at UNT will probably surpass all other previous QB's. No one should be put in the Hall just because we've had poor quarterbacking since. Dan McCarney can't recruit. I think Ken Washington, Jordan Case and Steve Ramsey are the only legit Hall of Fame quarterbacks (By not lowering the standards) These guys, and others, only played 10 games. Some played more with the DII playoffs. For the most part, there were only a handful of D1 bowls. With the addition of about 25 more bowls, teams are bowl eligible with 6 wins, (.500 record). Derek Thompson is Glen Ray and Ken Smith. 3th and 4th string quarterbacks back in the mid-70's. They rarely saw the field. No way in hell does Derek belong in this company. Don't mean to beat up on Derek Thompson. He had an above average senior year. He, in my opinion, is just not Hall of Famer worthy. We didn't win a conference championship and ended up beating a bad UNLV team. (In one of the 25-28 bowl games in 2014. Their coach was fired the next year. Please UNT, let's not lower this thing any further!

Just when I think that UNT's Hall of Fame couldn't get watered down further, Vito drops Derek Thompson's name as a sure bet. Hell, if Josh Greer reappears next year and this teams becomes bowl eligible, he's in.

We were just another TE away from turning this program around. He surely redshirts behind 2 seniors. You would think a much faster Chumley also plays ahead of him. Where are the impact Defensive Linemen?

We've brought in other guys with similar resumes in the past that didn't pan out (Derius Terrell, Aaron Wallace, Brockland, Felt, Stradford and others) I not saying he should be behind the Commerce kid but McCarney will have him there. I'm quite frankly tired of folks giving this coaching staff a pass on Defensive linemen. The Cowboys are out of the playoffs because they can't put a pass rush on a one legged quarterback. How is it that other programs can find them and we can't? I have no confidence in this coaching staff recruiting a solid class in areas of need. I'm on board signing this kid up but we need to run off 3-4 more quarterbacks to make room for more defensive linemen. Start with not signing any that don't have major college size. WE PAY McCarney alone 800k And he has been here 4 years with nothing to show for his line. I have a 6-4, 300 lb great nephew at Dallas Skyline. That is a beast at DT/OT . HE'S WAS THE ONLY fr coach Samples moved up to varsity during the playoffs' I will be coordinating his recruiting process. We've made an unofficial visit to Denton. I've got him thinking about being a big fish in a smaller pond. Still waiting to hear from UNT and OG -
6-7 Fr. from Desoto. It will be interesting to follow his early career at Baylor. Could be a nice transfer candidate.

Why did Nebraska pull their offer? Why is it down to UNT and Houston? SMU needs a QB as bad. Where are the Ponies? Where's all the other interests in this kid today. I would think that if he is special that he would have better suitors. The new coaching staff at Nebraska decided to keep their other commitments with the exception of this one. Nebraska is not exactly playing for the National Championship @ AT&T Stadium tomorrow. I'm not crazy about kids that move around so much. It also appears that we have a legit QB for the next 2 years in the Juco signee. I wish we could focus more effort on finding big time defensive lineman than adding to an already crowded stable of QB's. This coaching staff would have him 4th or 5th behind McNulty, Josh Grier, Chumley, Means and the kid from Commerce on the depth chart (assuming Dajon doesn't return) I'd take him but this is not my priority -
Though I don't disagree, these kids still play for high school coaches as well for 3 years. AAU should not replace the role of HS coaching. The bigger problem is kids coming out of college after 1 year. Kobe didn't spend 1 day in college. Where were his complaints then? (And now)

TCU gets a number of true freshmen on the field. I'm sure Zach Whitfield would have gotten some time on their field as well (as a freshman). There is no reason to continue to salivate over these two. I thought Chris was an average HS linebacker at best. The fact that kids get offers does not make them outstanding prospects. Wisconsin wanted in the metroplex and Desoto in particular. Louisville offered 10 at SOC. Wisconsin offered 6-7 from SOC. Many of these guys were way overrated. As you guys know, many of these kids will end up transferring back to smaller schools that make more sense. I also thought that Dez White would have been a major impact here. (as QB) Though small, he would have been our best option at quarterback as a true freshman (running, passing and running the offense). What I seem to recall, over the past 2-3 season, is all the hype about Dan McCarney's recruits and how they are so much better than what we've attracted in the past. (Based solely on offers) How is that working out?

I really don't understand all this interest in Chris Orr...
-
For now, Wilson holds onto two potential scholarship opportunities — Division II Southern Arkansas and MacPherson College, a NAIA program in Kansas You can't make this stuff up
-
So was Desoto coach Claude Mathis. Rumored to be the new RB coach
-
Not disappointed at all (If he remains with the program) Big picture is that we get the kid for 2 full seasons, along with a legit center that we don't have.now. You build a team with a good big man and a very good point guard. There are enough ships to compliment Reese and Brice nicely for the next 2 years. The extra semester should help attract some other nice recruits.

Could be the state championship game. I just hope that SOC doesn't lose it to mistakes and bone head coaching decisions. Ennis doesn't have the athletes but the tradition and coaches. This is huge this time of year.

DISD generally doesn't develop good linemen. Has a lot to do with resources and coaching. Historically, the measurables have been there. Same thing with the Houston ISD. I guess college coaches feel that it may take too long to develop linemen that they generally pass on the kids. Skill positions has always been different. Same reason Houston & Dallas hasn't had a state champion in years. SOC has 3 D1 receivers committed: LaDaryl Blair (Boise St), Lamont Johnson (SMU) & JF Thomas (TCU). The 4th receiver is Notre Dame commit, Prentice McKinney (playing more and more on offense but primarily plays safety) RB Jordan Stevenson is close to a DISD rushing record with over 5,000 yard. (committed to UT) SOC has now advanced further than they have since my junior year in HS (70-71); when the refs took us in the back shed against Permian in Lubbock. SOC takes on #1 ranked Ennis Friday in Mansfield. As always, I'm in the house!
