Should be a competitive conference race https://thedailydragon.com/2016/09/20/2016-17-preseason-all-cusa-basketball-awards/ From a UAB perspective

I really believe so

I know UTSA was first, followed closely by Illinois, Colorado and Rice (in some order) Don't think he is active on twitter. I seriously would like to see UNT offer so I can work on him more. (My sister's grandson) Me bringing him up to Denton on an unoffical is not a problem.

This is my nephew (great). I continue to talk up UNT but no offer from the Mean Green. Class of 2018. Offers from many Big 12 and other P5's but no UNT. He really loves Nebraska from his visit. He hears from them often. Does not like Baylor because he had to pay parking on his visit. Has visited UT and A&M and offers are pending. Grades should not be a problem but he is struggling with his spanish class this semester. Rated as one of the top DL nationally in the 18 class. Will be a top 50 in Texas. http://247sports.com/Player/Calvin-Avery-84052

MGB: Follow-up thoughts on Littrell, Benford comments
Cooley replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Was Darrell Dickey ever a head coach before UNT or after? Did Dickey's teams play in an inaugural league with "new to football" schools or others that had just moved up from DII? Did Dickey have a winning record while at UNT? What was Dickey's record outside of this newly formed league? How many games did he win outside of this conference? I know we have had disasters since Dickey but it is not saying much by describing him as the most accomplished football coach since 95. Who cares that he had to play Texas, Alabama, TCU or Arizona in one season. Many NT coaches have had similar schedules. (TCU and Arizona were not national powers) As an alum and fan, I'm happy that we did win those conference games/titles back then. We should have. It's time to move on from Darrell Dickey and that cupcake start-up league at that time. -
What does Benford need to stay at UNT?

give the Temara kid a chance... Just stated that he is not a center... -
What does Benford need to stay at UNT?
Cooley replied to Matt from A700's topic in Mean Green Basketball
potentially best team in NT history??? How can that possibly be with a very large hole in the middle? (that wasn't addressed this off-season) Brice can't stay on the court for more than 18-20 minutes. The Temara kid is not a replacement for Eric Katenda in the middle. This team should be entertaining but I don't see much more than 18 wins. A good number of schools also returns a nucleus as well. 18 wins may get Benford a 2 year deal based on how competitive this team is and what the attendance looks like. He's either not renewed or given 2 years. He also will not be released prior to the 2nd semester before Keith Frazier and Ryan Woolridge are eligible. -
After leaving UNT, how many would have ever imagined Dodge on the cover of Texas Football?

Did I read that someone with a similar name was arrested with 2 other guys for armed robbery or assault? May not be the same person. Just asking. -

MGB: UNT men's hoops in mix for UALR grad transfer
Cooley replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Simply because of the scholarship numbers available. (13 to 85) The hope is that 1 or 2 guys can or will turn a program around in basketball (or be a key contributor) There is also not as much development in basketball from a kid's fr year to sr year. You generally know early if a kid can play or not. The player also realizes early his chances of playing. Why keep a kid around that's at the end of your bench? If you're a competitive kid, why hang around if you can't crack the top 10?. There are 3 times as many D1 programs in basketball for kids to transfer to. Kids are allowed to leave for the NBA after their freshman year compared to football where they must wait 2 before bolting to the NFL. It generally takes 4-5 years to turn a bad football program around, whereas, maybe 2-3 in basketball. Coaches seem to feel more pressure to win sooner in hoops. I think coaches owe it to their players to be realistic about playing time. If a kid has graduated or is a cancer, they should mutually part ways. Running off a few kids in football will not make as great a difference in the numbers. Besides, injuries are more prevalent; where depth is needed more. Bench players in football can be looked to for special teams help. Currently over 600 (All levels) http://verbalcommits.com/transfers/2016 -
Wish we could have kept the Texas transfer (Jones)

Mom just indicated his first offer to UNT. I am friends with his mother from NTSU. I expect a commitment. Other family members also attended NT. Attended South Grand Prairie but will play his senior season at Dallas' Bishop Dunne with my Great Nephew. (TAPPS State Champs in 2017)

Very impressive! http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/042616aac.html

If Kenny Buyers is a starting WR, this team is worse than I think they are.

Regarding threads for players we aren't recruiting
Cooley replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
This is my great nephew: Starting to get a new offer weekly. (Class of 2018) I've been talking up UNT to him for 2 years now. Was listed as one of the top Soph's in the 2015 Texas Football Magazine while at Skyline; transferred to Bishop Dunne prior to the season. Dunne will have as many D1 recruits as anyone in 17 & 18. No UNT offer yet http://www.hudl.com/athlete/5366737/calvin-avery http://247sports.com/Recruitment/Calvin-Avery-87209/RecruitInterests -
Out of high school before he went to UH. Not much of an offensive game but is eligible immediately. Could assist Brice in the center rotation. Don't know who we can run off to make a spot though. (Well, I do know but won't say) D'Angelo Allen makes the most sense (Missouri) but he'd have to sit out a year. http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/sportslink/2016/apr/04/valentine-izundu-transfer-wsu-basketball-team/

MGB: Benford says he will be back, confident in future
Cooley replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I'm completely satisfied (not thrilled) with him coming back in 16-17. Wish he could tweak the roster and find a more dependable impact big man or two. No one is happy with the record(s) but this team was competitive in most games (especially at home) and could have a break out year with the right moves. Folks are still pissed about what happened (or didn't) 3 years ago that they can't move on. In interviews with NBA officials, our top prospect admitted he didn't always give it his all. Additionally, our top point guard didn't take care of business in the class room and subsequently quit on the team. Yes, in most cases, a new coach should capitalize on what is inherited but it could also be a challenge. Benford continues to improve, in my view, each year. There have been no scandals and this staff deals with disciplinary actions swiftly and fairly. The beloved JJ didn't really do much until his 6th year. Let this man finish his last contract year, stop the bashing and see what happens. This revolving door of coaches in and out every 4 years, in all major sports, has got to stop. It was clear to me that Mccarney had to go because the recruiting was getting worse. Regardless of how he got here, we have never signed a higher prospect than Keith Frazier. There are others in the wing. The irony is that UNT, under Benford, is probably in better shape than LSU is today under JJ. Not the end of the world- 88 replies

No, I don't know about his future plans other than him wanting to be closer to home. As stated in this article, he got plenty of PT as a freshman. Not the tallest of centers but his bulk would compensate. Ronnie Morgan clone http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-hurricanes/sfl-forward-omar-sherman-transfers-out-of-miami-20150823-story.html
