I hope like hell that he is right! We shouldn't be in a conference with Florida schools! Let them have their day in the Sunbelt!

The most damaging play in UNT football history?
Cooley replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Nothing like the touchdown pass that wasn't against UT to win the ball game. The call was so bad, there would not be a reason to even look at replay today. We win that game and we are playing in Conference USA today! -
September 13, 2005 Kelley Back on the Scene -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TexasHoops.com Recruiting Staff For the past year, Kenneth Kelley has been pretty much under the major college radar screen. After a solid freshman year at Tulsa in 2003-04, the Dallas Carter High School product and the Golden Hurricanes decided to part ways, and Kelley seemingly fell off the face of the earth. But what the high-scoring 6-foot-1, 185-pound combo guard was doing was preparing himself for a comeback. He'll be playing the 2005-06 season at Navarro College in Corsicana and should resurface at the Division I level afterwards. Rivals.com Kelley has been at Navarro since arriving on campus in January. He's worked out with the team ever since and will project as one of the top players for the squad this season. It's been a semi-long road for Kelley, but he's definitely learned from his experiences. "He's more mature now," said Navarro assistant coach Johnny Estelle. "Especially on the court. Before his shot selection - there was none. He'd launch up long threes and that's good as long as it goes in. But he understands things better now. He knows how to play, how to make the extra pass, how to feed the post." While most have lost track of Kelley since his freshman year at Tulsa, some are on the ball. Two schools who barely lost out on him when they recruited him out of Carter, North Texas and TCU, have been well aware of his whereabouts and have offered him scholarships again. In fact, it's been highly rumored that the Horned Frogs - who were essentially second on Kelley's list two years ago - will eventually land the high-scoring combo guard. "He's probably going to end up doing that, but he'll wait to sign late and see," Estelle said. "We will see how things go this season." With that said, Kelley will play out the year and revisit things in the spring. While he very well may end up inking with Neil Dougherty's squad, you never know. "I think with Kenneth's potential, he could play anywhere he wants to," Estelle said. "It all depends on him and building on what he already has. A lot of schools may be backing off because they think he's just going to go to TCU. But we'll see." Texas Hoops Analysis (Fall of 2002): Kenneth can play either guard position. He is a smooth athlete who can break down the defense off the dribble and finish in the paint. He can really stroke it from the 3-point line and can create his own shot. He is a very good ball handler and passer, pushes the ball up court and has a good feel for the game. He plays hard and is a solid defender on the ball. I personally like UNT's chances. TCU has verbal comittments from similar type players and rumor has it that they will also get the services of another area transfer. Kelley was also good friends in HS with Seneca Collins and a teammate at Tulsa. Would be a good pick.

Don't know if this is a poll or not but I: Like the helmet (scripting) better than last year. I also like the "Mean Green" on the chest. Don't like the large numbers. Have never liked black socks. I think the coaches could use better uniforms. I also like not seeing a water boy for the head coach?

Ex-Tulsa basketball player transfers to UNT 02:19 AM CDT on Thursday, September 8, 2005 By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle Seneca Collins, a former member of the Tulsa basketball team, has transferred to UNT and joined the football team. Collins started 17 games for Tulsa last season and averaged 7.5 points a game. Coach Darrell Dickey said the school is trying to determine how many years of eligibility Collins will have at North Texas. Dickey is considering the former Duncanville standout at defensive end, tight end or defensive tackle. UNT basketball coach Johnny Jones said he would talk to Collins about playing for the Mean Green if he was interested in continuing his basketball career and Dickey approved. Never saw Collins play football but he would be a very nice addition to JJ's basketball team. Graduated from Duncanville HS in 2002 as a top area recruit

Updated: Sep. 3, 2005, 6:28 PM ET By Andy Katz ESPN.com The ugly side to Hurricane Katrina, the despair that led to the looting this past week in New Orleans, has spilled into the seemingly trivial world of college basketball. Monte Towe, head coach of the displaced University of New Orleans, told ESPN.com on Saturday that his best player, sophomore guard Bo McCalebb, is being approached by intermediaries representing other schools to leave the university. This comes on the heels of the school deciding Friday, according to Towe, that the Privateers will play this season. “ We're a microcosm of the whole city of New Orleans because now someone is trying to loot my players. ” — New Orleans coach Monte Towe Where and when is still up for debate. Towe and athletic director Jim Miller are investigating possible sites such as Tyler Junior College (Texas) and Chipola Junior College (Fla.). McCalebb, who is from New Orleans, rode out the storm with his mother in their home near the French Quarter. When the levee broke Tuesday and flooding began, Towe advised the McCalebbs to evacuate. He suggested Baton Rouge, but they drove to Houston to be with family instead. "We're a microcosm of the whole city of New Orleans because now someone is trying to loot my players," Towe said by cell phone from St. Augustine, Fla., where he went for a planned trip last Thursday before the hurricane hit. "My kids are vulnerable right now but we're going to have a season and play ball," Towe said. "Every player knows that and I've told them that if they don't feel they can be successful under these conditions, then I'll let you go. But based on conversations I've had, they'll be ready to go, including Bo. "People [talking to McCalebb, who averaged 22.6 points a game last season] have been acting on behalf of institutions," added Towe, who wouldn't name the programs. "He's not getting calls from coaches, but he's getting calls from people representing coaches and schools saying that 'you're not going to have a basketball team this season and we've got an apartment for you.' I've fought this for a year with McCalebb but fortunately for me he loves New Orleans." NCAA president Myles Brand said on Thursday that transfer situations would be considered and that the organization would be flexible. In his news release, Brand did not say for sure that players could transfer without having to sit out, just like Baylor's players were allowed to do two years ago. Under NCAA rules, New Orleans would have to release a player from his scholarship before other schools rightfully could call that player. "The difference with us and Baylor is that was over the summer," Towe said. "We've started school [on Aug. 22]. If it got to a point where we weren't going to have a team, then I would tell Bo to go to NC State or Alabama or wherever. But we're past that point and we will have a season. We might play 28 road games, but life could be worse. We're still the University of New Orleans and it might be on a different floor, but we're going to help rebuild this city." In this instance, Towe said NCAA administrators in Indianapolis should not allow players to transfer so they instead could help schools like UNO rebuild. "We're a member of the NCAA," Towe said. "We're not Duke, but we're the University of New Orleans and they need to make sure a member organization is taken care of. Our women's basketball team is going through the same thing. It's disgusting, people trying to kick someone while they're down." Towe said he's not certain of the extent of the damage to the university, Lakefront Arena or his home. He said his players and coaching staff evacuated last weekend to be with extended family and friends around the country. UNO finished 7-8 in the Sun Belt last season, 13-17 but with McCalebb could be one of the better teams in the Sun Belt this season. "I don't know what I have to go back to, but we're going to have a season," Towe said. "It's going to be a little bit abnormal but we're going to play and we expect our kids to play well."

Bell Off The Board Arlington Sam Houston 6-3 SG Donauld Bell pulled the trigger and verbally committed to UT-Arlington Saturday night. Chalk another steal up to the Maverick staff. Bell like 6-9 PF/C Trey Parker of Terrell has big time potential, but was interested in playing close to home, skipped some big summer events, and like Parker turned down bigger offers for somewhere close to home and more comfortable. In Bell, the Mav fans get a tremendous athlete, definitely one of the top leapers in the state. Bell needs to sure up his ball handling and decision making a tad, but is a good shooter already who can create his own offense. He has all the tools to be a lock down defender. After already landing 6-9 shot-blocker extraordinaire Trey Parker things are looking up for the Mavs. Bell and Parker headline a class that also includes 6-4 PF Tommy Moffitt of Irving/Houston Gulf Shores, 6-7 PF Matt Read of Weatherford, and 5-11 SG/PG Roge'r Guignard of Mesquite Horn. But it's Bell the #24 player and Parker the #33 player that make this a huge year for the Mavericks.

August 3, 2005 Texas point guard pulls the trigger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adam Munsterteiger BuffStampede.com It has been a busy day for recruiting news in Boulder. Ricardo Patton and the men's hoops team picked up their second highly regarded prospect from the Class of 2006. Rivals.com Thorne committed to Colorado. Arlington (Texas) Martin High point guard Dwight Thorne chose the Buffaloes over scholarship offers from Utah, Fresno State, Illinois State, New Mexico State, North Texas, SMU, Texas-Arlington, TCU and Toledo. "Dwight just committed to Colorado," stated Martin head coach Jeff Plemon. "He talked to Coach Patton this afternoon and verbally committed to them." "Colorado has been recruiting him since he was a freshman," he added. "They were in as much contact as they could be according to NCAA rules and they were very professional in recruiting him." Thorne, who currently stands 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, has the ability to play either guard position. The Buffs projects him to play point guard in Boulder. "It is a great place for him to have an opportunity to have an immediate impact," said Plemon. "They are looking at him to possibility come in and start, if not, play significant minutes as a true freshman. He plans to take an unofficial trip there in two weeks." The three-star prospect averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game as a junior. "I think I handle the ball well and make good decisions," Thorne expressed. "I can get it done in most areas of the game. I also feel like I'm a solid defender." "Dwight has just gotten better every year," Plemon said. "He is a very good shooter, he is a leader and he is very smart. He can run any offense you put in front of him. "One area I really wanted him to improve on was strength and he has done that. He dedicated himself to the weight room. He is benching 210 now and is up to 185 pounds." Hopefully this kid will get home sick! - Cooley-

August 3, 2005 Butler Played Role to a Tee -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TexasHoops.com Recruiting Staff Every team needs its role players, and Justin Butler was willing to be that this summer for the talent-laden Dallas Showtyme squad. The tough 6-foot-8, 245-pound post from Palo Duro High School in Amarillo concentrated on manning the paint and hitting the boards hard, but also used his time to work on some individual aspects as well. It should all pay off in a D-I scholarship, as Butler is getting looked at by a number of schools - including one that could be offering soon. Rivals.com "AAU basketball was good - it was a good all-around experience," Butler said. "I was really disappointed that the last tournament (Best of Summer in Los Angeles) was canceled - we were 3-0 and we had a good chance of winning it. I just wish they had a backup tournament or something like that." "But I did good in Vegas," he continued. "I stayed on the boards pretty strong. I mostly improved my defense this summer. I worked on my jumpshot too - basically everything about my game." Schools came out en masse during the month of July to watch Showtyme, and while some coaches may have been there to watch some of the team's other players, several came away impressed with what they saw of Butler. "I'm getting recruited by North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Colorado, and Virginia called the house the other day," Butler said. He indicated that there are no offers yet, but one school could be close. "I think that UNT is scouting me pretty hard. They're a nice little team, and they've got Mike Sturns who used to play with me with Dallas Hoops. But I don't have a favorite right now." There's one major thing that Butler is looking for in a college program, and official visits will be critical in helping him find it. He's hoping to get things started soon. "I have to get my SAT score back before I can take some visits," Butler said. "I just want to go where I can feel comfortable. It doesn't have to be close to home, but just somewhere where I can be comfortable in the environment." Immediate playing time is not necessarily an issue. "I know they'll have scorers there already, so you can't expect to be the main guy," Butler said. "So I'll just play my role and wait until my time comes." Butler noted that he may very well wait until the spring to sign. If that's the case, it will come after what likely will be another banner year for Palo Duro. "I think we'll be right back where we were last year," Butler said. "Except this time, we'll take it one step further." Texas Hoops Analysis: Justin is a big-bodied paint player who is learning how to work in the lane. He has the size to take up space and clog the lane, will lean on you on defense, and can catch and finish in the paint. He is a nice rebounder, gets points off the offensive glass and runs the floor well for his size. I personally would not offer Butler -Cooley-

I understand that there is a younger Morgan by the name of J' mison. Like Ronnie Jr, J'mison is contemplating transfering from Desoto High to SOC in the fall. This kid is more the size of Ronnie Sr (6-8 250) The great thing is that he will only be a soph. I looked him up and he is ranked the #2 center in the state (class of 2008) Not sure if this is UNT news at this time but we can hope. I like his size. BTW, excellent recruiting job by coach Mays at SOC this summer!

Any Famous Faces At Denton's & NT's Great American
Cooley replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Former NT player, OSU & New Mexico assistant and Washington St head coach Paul Graham -
I just saw where Texas Hoops has him as their pre-season #65 ranked senior entering his senior year. Ronnie Sr was 1st Team All-State at post and lead SOC deep in the playoffs. He also was highly recruited. As you know, he played HS ball for new NT coach Jimmy Gales. Morgan Sr. left NT after his junior year to play ball overseas. Ironically to help support Ronnie Jr. He struggled with high blood pressure and weight throughout his junior year. Ronnie Jr is closer to around 215 than 205. Technically, he did not even start for Desoto this past year. But then again, the coach did not start their OSU signee Roderick Flemmings. Though the coach, (Chris Dyer) has been successful every where he has been, (including a state championship at SOC) the kids feel that he plays too many mind games and don't won't to risk their senior year to such tactics. Desoto will be fine

No where near dad. As the article states, he is relentless on the boards and a tough defender. Not an offensive threat at this time. Also needs work on his free throws. I had heard rumors that Morgan and DeSoto's pt guard were transferring to SOC. (Melvin Goins) Caught one of their games during the Denton Shootout. He would not be a good sign for us at this time. Would be a good pickup for a Southland Conference School. Morgan transfers to SOC from DeSoto Move helps forward continue to follow his father's footsteps 11:19 PM CDT on Monday, July 11, 2005 By TIM MacMAHON / The Dallas Morning News DENTON – Ronnie Morgan's performance at the Great American Shootout probably will result in increased attention from college recruiters. They'll need to make sure their letters are sent to Morgan's new address. Morgan, who started at forward for Class 5A state finalist DeSoto as a junior last season, said he will attend South Oak Cliff after moving two weeks ago. He will join a program that will attempt to defend its 4A state title. "I think we're going to do real well at SOC, but it was hard leaving [DeSoto]," said Morgan, who helped Texas Top Prospects 2006 reach the NBA Gold division semifinals Monday. The 6-7, 205-pound Morgan, who has grown two inches during the off-season, looks forward to a frontcourt partnership with 6-9 Darrell Arthur. Morgan plans to fill the shoes of Kevin Rogers, a 6-9 Baylor recruit who combined with Arthur to form the state's most intimidating inside tandem. Morgan said DeSoto coach Chris Dyer wished him well when informed of the move. Dyer and South Oak Cliff coach James Mays II did not return phone messages Monday. Morgan will be following in the footsteps of his father, Ronnie Sr., who starred for South Oak Cliff in the 1980s. The younger Morgan, a rugged rebounder and defender who has spent the summer working to improve his offensive skills, said he is being recruited by several Division I schools. One is North Texas, which made its only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1988, when Morgan's father earned Southland Conference freshman of the year honors. "I hear about it all the time," Morgan said.

He plays for Mansfield. His parents were in the front row. Unfortunately, they did not get to see him play very much.
-
He scored 7 points and had some nice assists in their 3:25 game today in the Pit. If 6-8 teammate Gary Flowers (formerly of Dallas Lincoln) would have given up the ball a little more, maybe we could have seen more of Mangrum's game. Only negatives were 2 air balls. I remain impressed that he can help us.

Glad to see Rudy Levarity make the Hall. Got to know him well after I graduated. Once beat Carl Lewis in his prime. I also agree with the Walter Chapman snub! The best track star that we have had, that no one talks about, was Alvin Crenshaw. (Dallas Roosevelt HS) We've heard all the stories about Milton Collins being our all time biggest football recruit. Well, Alvin Crenshaw was every bit the national high school track recruit that Milton was in football. Crenshaw actually transferred to NT. The Dallas I.S.D. has produced many of the nations top track stars. (Michael Johnson, Michael Carter, Roy Martin, etc.) Alvin Crenshaw remains the top overall sprinter ever to come out of Dallas. His specialty was the 440. Also kicked butt in the 880 and every 220 yard dash he ran. This guy consistently ran everybody down on the anchor leg of every relay event I have ever seen. Clearly should be in UNT's Hall of Fame!!!

Not quite the same dissapointment as Milton Collins, but I have to give a high honorable mention to Spencer Stack. Though he didn't have any other D1 offers, he proclaimed on the local sports stations that he would make the other schools regret not offering him a scholarship. Hell, I believed him!!! By the way, Collins pledged the same organization I was a member of (Wisconsin Sleepers) During a visit back to NT, I made the entire pledge class to write me a letter. I still have those letters from 1980.
