  1. 12/5) Warriors and weather stop Cards from winning at Indian Hills/Hy Vee Classic. #2 Mineral Area dropped their first game of the season 74-54 to #5 Indian Hills on Friday. Curtis Muse was the lone bright spot scoring 21 points. Snow stopped DesMoines Area from traveling to Saturday's game, forcing the Cards to leave Iowa 0-1 on the trip. DJ Article Indians Hills hands Mineral Area first loss By DONN ADAMSON\Daily Journal Sports Editor OTTUMWA, IA - The Indian Hills Warriors wanted their No. 2 ranking back after losing it this past week, and it meant having to defeat the Mineral Area Cardinals who had just been elevated to that ranking. The Warriors came out with great intensity and a tenacious defense that kept the Cardinals at bay on the boards, both backboard and scoreboard for a 74-54 win.The Warriors outrebounded the Cardinals by a margin of 36-23 with several of their boards coming on offense for second chances at scoring. Indian Hills also spent much time at the free throw line where they were exceptionally good, going 22-25 in the second half, and 29-35 for the game. The Cardinals were only 10-16 on free throws. The Cardinals trailed by 10 at the half, but the Warriors pushed out to a much larger lead. Mineral Area closed it to within 10 points again with four and a half minutes left in the game but a three by Ashton Sauls kept the Cardinals from coming any closer.Curtis Muse led the team with 21 points, and T.J. Britton was next with seven. The Cardinals, 9-1, will have a week to figure out how to beat the Indians since they will be at home against the Warriors (8-1) on Saturday in the Rotary Classic. MAC's next game is tonight against Des Moines Area College at Indian Hills. Dec 03, 2005 - 00:09:16 CST (11/30) #2 Cards stay perfect at 9-0 with 88-74 win over Lewis & Clark. MAC used a balanced attack and solid defense to win their first MCCAC Conference game of the season over the TrailBlazers. Curtis Muse scored 14 and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the way. Willie Hassell added 14, while Darryl Butterfield & Tony Webb each scored 12. DJ Article Second-ranked Cardinals remain undefeated By JASON VIOX\Daily Journal Sports Writer PARK HILLS - The Mineral Area Cardinals had just recently been ranked as the No. 2 team in the nation. They were not prepared to lose to the Lewis and Clark Trailblazers on Wednesday. Mineral Area dominated the Trailblazers with an 88-74 victory.Lewis and Clark had a very frustrating time on the charity stripe as they made only 18 out of 40 free throws. The Cardinals had a much better showing as they were 20-28 from the free-throw line.Mineral Area's Tony Webb scored two baskets, and Darryl Butterfield added a lay-up to take a quick 6-0 lead, but David Graham quickly tied the game up with a jump shot and a pair of lay-ups. The Cardinals went on a 12-4 scoring run which included a three-pointer by Webb and Ralph Mata to regain a 18-10 edge. The Trailblazers tied the game on a 12-2 run for a 24-24 game. The Cardinals regained the lead on a 13-3 scoring spree. Willie Hassell had seven points which included a three pointer during the run. Lewis and Clark's Will Jones broke up the small run with a free throw, but Hassell answered with another triple.Jonathan Jackson drained a jump shot for Mineral Area, and Dontavis Jones added a three-point shot for their last points of the half. Alphonso Towns and Pierre Howard both added two more tallies for the Trailblazers before the end of the first half. The Cardinals were ahead 47-36.The two teams exchanged four points before Mineral Area's Curtis Muse slammed down a dunk as the building shook with cheers. Lewis and Clark retaliated with a small 8-1 scoring run for a 54-48 game. Terrance Peirson scored six of those eight points. The Cardinals racked up 12 straight points to extend their lead which included a couple of lay-ups by Steven Schauf. Howard broke up the streak with a three pointer. Webb later drained his second three-point shot of the game for a 75-55 lead.Hassell set up Butterfield for an alley oop before the Trailblazers added 10 consecutive points for an 83-72 contest. Peirson scored the first four tallies of the drive. Lewis and Clark added two points, and the Cardinals chipped in four more, which included a dunk by Tremaine Wilkerson before the end of the game.Peirson finished with a game-high 23 points. Muse had 16 points and nine rebounds for Mineral Area. 2. Noticed Mangrum has not played in the last 3 Howe games. Does anyone know if he is injured? He had average about 32 points the prior 3 games!
  3. I know you can't address all the needs in one recruiting class but I'd like to replace most of the returners. We have seen better football before the Dickey era! I'm sorry but I am not impressed winning the Sun Belt anymore. Just my opinion
  4. What's the difference in this verbal assault to RF's? So many called for RF to be fired. George Dunham should be fired also!!! Besides, both of their play calling have been bad for years now. Just a joke!
  5. I don't see a reason to panic and blow things out of proportion. I want a New Football facility (In Denton) as bad as the next alum. I don't, however, expect the construction to commence at the expense of a needed 4-year public campus in Southern Dallas County. The city of Dallas last year purchased 202 acres in southeast Oak Cliff and deeded it to UNT for development of the proposed campus. Another 62 acres has been added through gifts and purchases. The 264-acre campus will be a significant intellectual and economic force in the region and shows the commitment to a first-class campus. Instead of bashing UNT's administrators on this issue, I commend them for their commitment to Oak Cliff, the City of Dallas, Dallas County and Ellis County and the surrounding area. As a previous poster mentioned, the lower projections are a result of the limited number of undergrad classes currently available at the UNT Systems facility. Less than 2 miles away from the UNT Dallas site is Cedar Valley Community College of the Dallas County Community College District. Paul Quinn College is also only 2 miles away. Many current Denton students, from the area, have stated that they would prefer UNT Dallas but because of the lack of classes, they choose to commute UTA's current provost and vice president for academic affairs, has stated that UTA has achieved dramatic growth in the last five years, and she doesn't see UNT Dallas as a threat. She also feels that UNT Dallas and UTA will not be a competitive situation. In fact, they are trying to find more ways to partner to accommodate student demand. They also desire partnerships with UNT and she wishes UNT Dallas well. UNT Denton, and others universities, are not new to setbacks and delays. The Texas Legislature recently failed to address a school finance bill that would have financed a new Business Admin building and dormitory. Dr Pohl had sought these funds for some time. Over the years, no individual or effort has taken place to fund a new stadium. To now blame UNT Dallas as a reason to delay a new Fouts is not fair. A Darrell Dickeyless coached team may speed the funding efforts. BTW, the 1st building (24 million) is under construction. As with a new Mean Green Village Stadium on a nice piece of prime real estate on the other side of 1-35, if you build it, the students will come.
  6. Can someone explain to me why the uproar over Ramon Flanagan? Darrell Dickey hired him 7 years ago to join his staff. I'm not sure if he has been the offensive coordinator each of those years. Anyway, I'm sure that in preparing for each game, Darrell Dickey conducts team meetings with coaches through out the week. Extensive game plans are discussed with the coaches collectively and individually. I would think that Dickey's footprints are all over the game plan and plays to be called. (During certain game situations) Each game that I have seen, DD has always had a head set on to talk to Flanagan, and others, upstairs. In a critical 3rd and long situation, I would think that Dickey knows that a draw play is coming. Since we often can't get a play off in the allotted time, I would think that Dickey has vetoed the play or had to approve the play. At the least, discussed the play. After each game, I'm sure that the coaches again gather, collectively and individually, to review game film; critiquing what worked and what didn't. As an employee of DD, I would think that Darrell feels and have felt for 6 other years that Flanagan continues to play call according to HIS game plan. Now I don't know if Flanagan is a good coordinator or not, but he continues to perform to Dickey's liking. If you want to see a change in play calling, you have to have a change in head coach. You don't get to fire the OC and keep the coach. Generally, when coaches are reassigned or terminated it is usually because of philosophical differences. This does not appear to be the case with Flanagan. If Leach at Texas Tech asked Flanagan to take over as his OC, I’m sure you would see the same offense production that you see from Tech now (40 points per game) Folks, play calling is totally on the head coach. It makes no sense for Dickey to replace Flanagan when Dickey has sanctioned the plays. (7 years now) Lastly, did anyone see that Mean Green defense this year? Offense and defense were equally pathetic in 05. I get a kick out of the PA announcer with his trademark "First Down". If he just shouted that out for each first down by our opponents this year, he would have lost his voice after each game.
  7. I've followed North Texas football recruiting for approx. 30 years now. NT averaged 10-15 kids annually listing the Mean Green. This, of course, was pre-Darrell Dickey. I don't know why he would attempt to keep this information out of the press. Why be so defensive instead of proactive in selling this program. These kids have an opportunity to play early, earn all-conference honors and set all-time school records. Since so many will return to the metroplex once their playing days are over, why not get a head start with job opportunities and connections while playing at North Texas. The gap today is so large between our players and those of CUSA, Mountain West, Big 12 and others, that those schools may rethink trying to sign someone that has committed UNT. If I'm a D1 prospect with several offers, why would I be interested in this program? (When no others kids appear to be interested) Perception is everything to the kids, parents, coaches and friends. This practice, if true, is stupid and may deter the signing of others. I would rather build on the momentum of a top pledge by spreading this information (unofficially) to all other kids. A review of the actually signing classes (Under Dickey) will validate the fact that we are doing a horrible job in the metroplex. The marginal area players that actually show up on tour roster (from the metroplex) actually walk on. If we are going to put an undisciplined team on the field, with brushes with the law and/or academic concerns, we should at least recruit better athletes of this type.
  8. Rowlett High teacher collapses, dies 05:35 PM CST on Wednesday, November 16, 2005 By MARGARITA MARTIN-HIDALGO / The Dallas Morning News A teacher collapsed at Rowlett High School on Wednesday morning and died later at Lake Pointe Medical Center. Two students found Sandra Reaves-Blackmon, chairwoman of the school’s business and career technology department, shortly after 8:30 a.m. on a classroom floor, said Steve Knagg, the Garland school district’s director of communications. A school nurse tried to revive her with a defibrillator but couldn’t, Mr. Knagg said. Paramedics who went to the school, at 4700 Kirby Road, also tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the 51-year-old teacher, said principal Marlene Hammerle. Dr. Hammerle said Ms. Reaves-Blackmon, who had taught at the school since it opened in 1996, was a great teacher and loved by her colleagues. She was the wife of the school’s head basketball coach, Stan Blackmon. Stan's son, Stan Jr, was All-Conference at Arkansas Little-Rock a few years ago and his daughters stared for the National Champions Lady Bears last year.

  11. Mean Green Basketball Inks Four Standout Recruits Early Courtesy: University of North Texas Release: 11/09/2005 DENTON (11/9/05) -- North Texas head men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones has announced that Howe (TX) High School’s Collin Mangrum , Mineral Area (MO) College’s Curtis Muse and Jonathan Jackson and San Jacinto (TX) College’s Ben Bell have all singed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Mean Green next season. "This is an exciting day for North Texas basketball and its fans," said Jones. "It gives me great pleasure to announce the signing of four unique players that will make an impact on our program for years to come. This is the first time that we have been able to complete our recruiting class in the early signing period and it speaks volumes of how hard this staff has worked leading up to this special day. All four of these players come from successful programs and we welcome them and their families to our Mean Green family." Mangrum is a 6-4, 185 pound guard that helped lead Howe High School to the Texas Class 2A State Semifinals last season and is a big part of its No. 9 ranking in the TABC 2005-06 Preseason Poll. Howe finished the 2004-05 season ranked No. 3 in the final state rankings and Mangrum was named an all-state selection as a junior after averaging 15.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He was also named to the Texas State All-Tournament Team, tabbed All-District 13-2A and a first team all-region selection. He is ranked No. 38 out of the state’s top 100 seniors by TexasHoops.com and No. 123 by PrepRoundBall.com in the class of 2006. Mangrum, a preseason second team all-state selection among all classifications by Texas Basketball Magazine, was also recruited by TCU, SMU, Baylor, Tulsa and Stephen F. Austin. He will join former teammate Justin Howerton, who signed with the Mean Green last year. "Collin is the hardest working player I’ve had in 26 years," said Howe head coach Tim Rose. "He has great talent and his work ethic is unbelievable." North Texas will get a couple of big men in junior college transfer’s Muse and Jackson. Both players will have two year’s of eligibility remaining with the Mean Green. They helped lead Mineral Area College to the 2004-05 MCCAC (Midwest Community College Athletic Conference) championship and a 21-10 record. The Cardinals are ranked No. 19 in the NJCAA I Preseason Poll and 18th nationally by Street & Smith’s magazine. Muse is a 6-10, 225 pound center that averaged 8.3 points and 4.8 rebounds as a freshman last season and was named to the MCCAC All-Conference Team as a honorable mention selection. He was tabbed preseason all-america by Street & Smtih’s for the upcoming year. The St. Louis, Missouri, native ranked second among all players in Region 16 last season in field goal percentage (62.2 percent), seventh in blocks (0.9 bpg) and 13th in rebounds. Muse posted season highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Before signing with MAC, Muse attended Vashon High School and helped lead the basketball team to a state championship. Vashon went undefeated Muse’ senior season and he was an all-state selection. Muse was also recruited by Wyoming, UNLV and Oklahoma. "Curtis is a big guy that runs the floor well," said Mineral Area College head coach Corey Tate. "He is very exciting to watch. He is athletic and knows how to play the game." Jackson is 6-8, 240 pounds and can play either forward or center. He competed the second half of last season with the Cardinals and averaged 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He ranked eighth in blocks among all players in Region 16 last season. Jackson attended Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon. He was also recruited by teams such as Utah State and UNLV. "Jonathan will bring alot of leadership to our team this season because he is real mature," said Tate. "He is exciting to watch because he can play down low and step outside to shoot the three." Ben Bell is a 6-3, 170 pound point guard that is competing for No. 8 San Jacinto College this season as a sophomore. Bell originally signed with Weatherford College after a successful high school career at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas. He was named the NTJCAC (North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference) Freshman of the Year last season and was a NTJCAC All-Conference selection. As a freshman with the Coyotes, Bell averaged 15 points and seven assists per game for the entire season. In conference games only, he averaged 12.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game. His 6.6 assists per game were the fourth most among all players in the league. Bell was also named the NTJCAC Player of the Week after recording 20 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds and three steals in a victory. Through three games with San Jacinto College this season, he is averaging 12 assists per game. Bell completed his high school career by being named first team all-district, district MVP and First Team All-Region V as a senior. "Ben is a player who will run a team and distribute the ball well," said San Jacinto College head coach Scott Gernander. "He is quick and strong enough to get in the lane and does a good job of getting the ball out. He is also a solid defender who can get his hands on the ball. Ben is a true point guard." The four early signings will join Arizona State transfer Keith Wooden as newcomers on next year’s team and wraps up North Texas’ 2005-06 signing class. A 6-9, 245 pound center, Wooden is practicing with the Mean Green this year, but will not be eligible to compete in a game until the 2006-07 season due to NCAA transferring rules. Out of Free State High School in Lawrence, Kansas, Wooden originally signed with Arizona State as one of the top 100 national high school players according to several publications and websites, including Basketball Times, Athlon’s, CBS Sportsline and HoopScoop.

  13. Editor's Note: ESPN Insider has teamed with Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook to provide a comprehensive look at all 326 Division I teams. To order the complete 25th anniversary edition of Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, visit www.blueribbonyearbook.com or call 1-866-805-BALL (2255). (Information in this team report is as of October 1.) The 2004-05 season began with much anticipation at North Texas. Blue Ribbon Previews: The Mean Green started 8-4, including encouraging victories against UNC Wilmington and Lamar. Better yet, Denton was set to play host to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament a couple of months down the road. But Johnny Jones' squad opened the league schedule with an ominous 27-point loss at Denver that seemed to set the tone for a 6-9 league mark. North Texas concluded its disappointing season with a first-round league tournament loss to Arkansas State. The showing lacked the anchor of consistent post scoring. But equally important was the fact that the go-to guy, the departed Leonard Hopkins, shot 29 percent from three-point range while attempting the most on the team. Hopkins did do a lot of things well. He scored 18.3 points per game and got to the free-throw line 176 times (85.8 percent). Still, Jones believes the perimeter should be better this year with the return of 6-0 senior point guard Isaac Hines (6.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.1 spg), 6-5 junior wing Calvin Watson (11.2 ppg, 2.7 rpg) and the arrival of 6-4 wing Kendrick Davis, a transfer from Arkansas who sat out last year. Davis has generated a lot of excitement. He averaged double figures as a freshman at Arkansas before falling out of favor his sophomore year. But any optimism of Jones' begins with Hines. "If I was coaching anywhere in the country, I'd want Isaac Hines to be part of my basketball team," Jones said. "I believe he was the first player ever to lead North Texas in rebounding, steals and assists." The rebounds are what stands out, and certainly provide a good measuring stick for the heart of the 6-footer. "He has a nose for the ball," Jones said. Davis should be among the league's top new faces. He often stood out during Mean Green practices last year. "He would do things in practice and you're thinking, 'Boy, I wish he was playing tomorrow night,'" Jones said. "He's able to share and create opportunities, and he can really play both guard positions and small forward. "I think he's going to be a very good player, and I think he'll bring a presence at both ends of the floor. He has an opportunity to be an excellent defensive player with his quickness and long arms." Watson made 51-of-127 three-pointers (40.2 percent) last year and could evolve into an all-conference player as an upperclassman. "Calvin has shown what he's capable of doing," Jones said. "He needs to be consistent on both ends of the floor." Another guard Jones has back is 6-4 sophomore Michael Sturns (4.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg), who played in all 28 games as a freshman. Sturns had nine points, nine rebounds and seven assists one game, and made two free throws with no time on the clock to give North Texas a 74-73 victory against New Orleans in its next to last game of the regular season. Lionel Brown, a 5-11 junior who played last year at Eastern Oklahoma State College, should spell Hines at point guard. The Mean Green will have to do a better job this season of defending the perimeter. Last season opponents shot 36.7 percent from the three-point line. Of course inefficient interior play and contested perimeter shots go hand in hand. Jeffrey Simpson (7.7 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.8 bpg), a 6-8 senior, was the leading inside scorer, and he might not have topped seven points per game if 6-10 senior Justin Barnett (5.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg) hadn't missed eight games with a broken hand. "Jeffrey Simpson was playing as well as any post in the latter part of the season," Jones said. "I thought he and Justin both had pretty good years." Jones signed one prep center, 6-10, 240-pound Justin Howerton (Howe, Texas), who averaged 17.8 points and 11.7 rebounds during an all-state senior season. Only one experienced forward returns, 6-8 sophomore Quincy Williams (4.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg). Williams was second on the team in blocked shots despite averaging just 14.4 minutes a year ago, but he was also second in personal fouls. A sturdy 215-pounder, Williams could be the Mean Green's most improved player this season. "He has a chance to show some great strides," Jones said. "He's put in a lot of work in the off-season." Two freshmen forwards Jones was pleased to sign are 6-6 Harold Edwards (Mobile, Ala.) and 6-8 Harold Stewart (Fort Worth, Texas). Stewart (16.9 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 2.0 bpg) was the 26th ranked player in Texas, and Jones says he got a "steal" in Edwards, who played for nationally ranked LeFlore High School. BLUE RIBBON ANALYSIS BACKCOURT: A BENCH/DEPTH: B+ FRONTCOURT: B INTANGIBLES: A- On paper, the Mean Green looks deeper in the backcourt and more experienced in the post. "I'm excited," Jones said. "I feel like we can match up with anyone in the league on the perimeter with these guys. And if Jeffrey and Justin can stay healthy, we should be OK in the post. "Chemistry is always big. Kendrick was part of the team last year during practice, but he wasn't out there in the line of fire." If the personalities mesh after the playing time shakes down and Simpson and Williams stay on course with their progress in the frontcourt, North Texas should improve on last season's .500 showing. Thanks to those that inquired. The brain tumor was removed successfully. I returned home today
  14. October 27, 2005 Now at his third stop in three years, Ben Bell may be ready to settle on his fourth destination. The solid 6-foot-3, 170-pound point guard originally from Irving is now at San Jacinto College in Pasadena after playing at Weatherford last year, and is considering a move back closer to the DFW area. Bell is currently evaluating all of his options - which includes waiting until the spring to sign - but there's no doubt that one school is on the forefront of his mind. "Ben really likes North Texas - they're at the top right now," said San Jacinto assistant coach Scott Horstman. "He visited them about three weekends ago for football homecoming. He also visited Louisiana Tech last weekend, and he's also getting mail from a whole bunch of schools, and some others like Iona and La Salle have called. He's getting a lot of play, but UNT is on top." North Texas leads for Bell's services for several reasons. The question at this point is if they lead enough to secure his signature in the fall signing period. "He likes them because it's close to home and he has a chance to step in and play," Horstman said. "He would like to commit and sign early, but it appears his dad is telling him to maybe wait. But if were to sign early, it would be with UNT." As a freshman at Weatherford College last season, Bell was named co-Freshman of the Year in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference and earned a spot on the All-Conference Team. He'll step right into a big role with the Ravens this year. "Ben is a true point guard who gets the ball to the open man," Horstman said. "He has a nice mid-range jumper, and can shoot the three well-enough to keep you honest, although I wouldn't necessarily call him a three-point shooter. Last year for Weatherford, he shot 40 percent from the three-point line but he didn't take that many shots. He's got good size and quickness, and he's a very good defender too." Texas Hoops Analysis: Ben is a very athletic guard who can really create with the dribble. He is very quick to the hole, can elevate and finish in the paint, handles it well in the open court and plays with a lot of energy.
  15. I guess the pending signings of two big bodies (and Mangrum) will conclude the 05-06 recruiting class. That should negate a potential signing of Ronnie Morgan Jr (6-7, 220) from SOC. (Who lists UNT as a favorite) Though I don't think that he would be a difference maker, his signing, (wherever) might impact his younger brother, sophomore J'Misson "Bobo" Morgan. I attended an open house at SOC last night where they had a 3-point & slam-dunk contest as well as scrimmage; before we were able to meet and talk to the kids. J'Misson is every bit 6-10, 260. Though he is not at the level of their 6-9 Pre-Season All-American senior Darrell Arthur, he will be the closest thing to a Baby Shaq in 2 years. As mentioned in earlier posts, the brothers are the son of UNT All-Time great Ronnie Morgan (about 6-7, 250) BTW, SMU's Jimmy Tubbs made it over and feels that the Mustangs are on Arthur’s short list.
  16. Hard to beat a staff of: Bill Blakeley, Head Coach (Not much on X's and O's but played exciting ball that excited the crowd, put points on the board and put asses in seats) Billy Tubbs, Asst. Coach (Brought in the best kids outside of Dallas and the Juco ranks) Jimmy Gales, Asst Coach (Recruited the very best out of Dallas with emphasis on his former kids at Dallas SOC) Herb Dillion, National Recruiter (Recruited top kids across the country)
  17. Thanks Buford for the update! Any word on whether Seneca Collins will attempt to play in 06-07? He could really help us next year.
  18. I'd like to see a coach get 1 metroplex kid (top 100) to list UNT in their top 5 choices (in October.)

  20. September 28, 2005 Richland's Bullard Taking Off -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blue Zertuche TexasHoops.com Recruiting Analyst Since taking over the Richland College men's basketball program, new coach Chuck Taylor is trying to continue the tradtion of division I athletes that get highly recruited each year. The player that has already started the most "buzz" around Texas is 6'4" 215 pound wing Will Bullard, a Detroit native. Bullard hasn't played a game yet for the Thunderducks but is attracting attention from many schools. There has already been offers extented his way from division II on up to the mid-major ranks. "Will is doing good and he is doing well in the classroom too. Will is getting a lot of looks," said coach Taylor. "There have been many schools that have already come in and more to come in the next few weeks." Four division I schools have offered and others have called to inquire about Bullard. "Corpus Christi A&M, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana and North Texas have offered, along with a few D-II schools," said Taylor. "Oakland University from Detroit has called to ask about Will and so has Nebraska, Centenary, Southern and TCU." Bullard spent last season in his hometown and attended Marygrove College which is part of the USCAA Conference. Bullard was a second team All-American as a freshman. After a year at Marygrove, Bullard needed a new setting and figured that Dallas would be a great place for a new start and a chance to be seen for a division I scholarship. "Dallas is great and so is the school," said Bullard. "Right now I am concentrating getting my work done in the classroom and I should graduate." Like most junior college players, Bullard will wait til the spring to sign. "I will be looking for a school with a good education besides a good basketball program. I am studying business because I will need something after basketball. It doesn't last forever." Texas Hoops Analysis: WILL BULLARD is an extraordinary athlete and a big time leaper. Bullard has a trim basketball body, is a lefty and plays either the 2/3. He is very explosive going to the hole and can finish above defenders. Bullard will use his athleticism to rebound, has good ball handling skills and will knock down the open three.
  21. September 30, 2005 Decisions, Decisions for Dabney -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TexasHoops.com Recruiting Staff Last weekend, the United States Military Academy pulled a coup out of the Lone Star state when they secured commitments from Lance Pevehouse and Cleveland Richard. Can Army pull off a third this weekend with a pledge from Cole Dabney? It's possible the massive 6-foot-10, 260-pound post from Bowie High School in Austin pulls the trigger, but it's just as likely he won't. He's got a whole host of options he's trying to sort out this fall. Dabney Family "Right now, I'm just sitting back looking at what everybody has to say," Dabney said. "I'm taking an official visit to West Point this weekend, and a couple of other schools want me to set up this October, so I'm deciding when and where right now." Dabney has a whole host of options that he's looking over. His offers so far come from Army, Albany, Binghampton, and UT-Arlington, but he's got high-major programs such as Michigan and Northwestern talking to him, mid-majors like Tulsa, SMU, and UNT calling, and academic-oriented schools like Yale interested. Asked to give a top five or six, Dabney replied with Yale, North Texas, UNC-Wilmington, Tulsa, Army, and Michigan. Of those, two are at the very top. "Yale and North Texas are my top 2, and while they are night and day, they both have a lot to offer," Dabney said. "I have the grades to most likely go to Yale, and North Texas has a great film program (like Yale) and that's what I want to major in and then my mom and dad, family and friends could see me play on a regular basis, since it's only 3 hours away." "The Ivy League has a really cool basketball scene, and you have a chance to go to the Tourney every year," he continued. "They play a really cool southern and north-eastern schedule, with a little bit of everything: Big 12, Big 10, Conference USA, and Big East are all in there. The no athletic scholarship thing they have is kind of hard, but the opportunity to go to a university that is consistantly rated the first, second or third best school in the nation along with Princeton and Harvard, would be a once in a lifetime experience, and a degree from there would be a big accomplishment that I would like to achieve." Still, Dabney is thinking about the possibilities of playing in a big conference if given the chance. "Michigan is in the Big-10, and that's big-time basketball," Dabney said. "And Northwestern - they've been recruiting me for awhile. They have a really good program too." For now though, Dabney is looking forwards to his visit to Army where he hopes to have some of his questions about the school and program answered. "The thing with West Point is the five-year commitment afterwards," Dabney said. "I don't know if I definitely want to do that. But the coach did an in-home visit with me and told me that I would be the biggest guy they'd ever have there. So it's kind of neat to have somebody who really wants you. I'm definitely looking at them." Will Dabney be able to process enough information to make an early decision? "I've always planned on signing in the fall if the opportunity was there," Dabney said. "But the thing I've heard a lot is that it doesn't make any difference if you sign in the fall or in the spring if you're not 100 percent sure. There's no reason to take a chance on four years of your life. So I don't want to rush it. There's so much to take into consideration basketball and academics-wise, so I just have to find a place where the basketball and academics are right."
  22. Ohio State's Hawk Flys Above All Others On Defense By Mel Kiper Jr. Special to ESPN Insider While USC quarterback Matt Leinart remains at the top of the board with good reason, there is no question that Ohio State outside linebacker A.J. Hawk has solidified himself as the top senior prospect on defense. Leinart's arm strength has noticeably improved this season, allowing him to upgrade his rating from the end of 2004. The loss of offensive coordinator Norm Chow hasn't slowed down USC's awesome offensive production. Hawk simply is all over the field, showing superior instincts along with picture-perfect ability as a form tackler. UCLA tight end Marcedes Lewis combines incredible athleticism with impressive natural pass-receiving skills. He'll be quite a weapon in the NFL. Florida State linebacker A.J. Nicholson and Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter both made a move into the top 25 board. Nicholson is coming off a career-high 19-tackle, two-interception performance against Boston College, while the physically talented Carpenter has been very consistent. Carpenter's teammate, center Nick Mangold, shows the type of skills you look for in a future Pro Bowl caliber pivot man in the NFL. The entire list: 1. Matt Leinart, QB, USC (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) | previous rank: same Leinart does not have a cannon arm but does have a keen understanding of the complex offense, and barring injury he should remain at the top of the draft board. He is super accurate, distributes his passes all over the field and always knows where to go with the ball. 2. A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio State (6-1½, 242) | previous rank: same An instinctive player and sure tackler, Hawk racked up an amazing 141 total tackles last season. He knows which angles to take to the ball and finds his way through traffic very well. There is very little separating Hawk from Chad Greenway, whose teams will face each other Saturday in Columbus. 3. D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia (6-5½, 295) | previous rank: same Ferguson is light on his feet, has long arms and is a superior overall tackle. He toys with defensive ends in pass protection and is also a very good run blocker. 4. Marcedes Lewis, TE, UCLA (6-6, 258) | previous rank: 5 Lewis has legit 4.5 speed and a perfect frame for the position, and the UCLA staff needs to take it upon itself to improve significantly on last year's total of 32 receptions. There is no reason Lewis can't catch five or six passes a game if the questionable Bruins quarterbacks can get the ball to him. 5. Chad Greenway, LB, Iowa (6-2½, 244) | previous rank: 4 Has become one of the top-flight linebackers in the nation over the last two years. A smart player with great physical skills, Greenway knows how to find the ball and can go all over the field to get to it. 6. Jimmy Williams, CB, Virginia Tech (6-2½, 207) | previous rank: same A former safety who moved to corner before last season, Williams showed in the first few games of 2004 that he has awesome natural skills, fluid movements and enough size to deal with today's big receivers. 7. DeMeco Ryans, OLB, Alabama (6-1½, 235) | previous rank: 10 Coming off a great junior season, Ryans is a defensive leader on a Crimson Tide team that is 3-0 for the second straight season. 8. Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, Boston College (6-5½, 260) | previous rank: 11 Kiwanuka recorded 11½ sacks last season but there is still room for improvement as he enters his fifth year. He has tremendous natural talent but still needs a little work on the finer technical points. If that happens he will be the most feared sack artist in the nation this year. 9. Jason Allen, CB/S, Tennessee (6-2, 205) | previous rank: 8 Moving back to corner from safety, where he led the SEC with 123 total tackles last season. Another big corner who can deal with big wideouts. 10. Hank Baskett, WR, New Mexico (6-3, 220) | previous rank: 14 An interesting player who is a big target with good speed. Already has 399 receiving yards in the Lobos' first three games. 11. DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis (5-9, 215) | previous rank: 9 Coming off a 205-yard performance last week versus Chattanooga. A tremendously creative runner who averaged 6.2 yards per carry in his first three seasons and scored 37 rushing touchdowns. Has worked his way back to 100 percent after breaking his leg in the GMAC Bowl and should be a top-10 overall pick. 12. A.J. Nicholson, OLB, (6-2, 235) | previous rank: unranked Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week following a career-high 19 tackles and two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) in the Seminoles' win at Boston College. 13. Claude Wroten, DT, LSU (6-2, 293) | previous rank: 20 A junior college transfer last year, Wroten's six sacks in 2004 came in the final five games. Will be fun to watch Saturday against a determined Tennessee offense. 14. Tye Hill, CB, Clemson (5-9½, 181) | previous rank: 21 An outstanding pure cover corner with great recovery speed. Three-year letter winner, Hill tied the Clemson record for passes defended in a season in 2004 with 21. 15. D'Qwell Jackson, ILB, Maryland (6-0½, 230) | previous rank: 16 He had a game-high 15 tackles in Maryland's loss last week versus West Virginia. He reminds me a lot of former Miami linebacker Jonathan Vilma. 16. Jesse Mahelona, DT, Tennessee (6-2, 297) | previous rank: unranked A very solid interior lineman who continues to be a thorn in the side of centers and guards. 17. Bobby Carpenter, OLB, Ohio St. (6-3, 255) | previous rank: unranked A newcomer to the board this week, Carpenter has caught my eye with his game-to-game consistency. 18. Babatunde Oshinowo, DT, Stanford (6-2, 318) | previous rank: same In a 3-4 defense, Oshinowo is the ideal nose tackle. He's a powerhouse from a physical standpoint with quickness and agility. A real force to be reckoned with on the interior. 19. Dominique Byrd, TE, USC (6-3, 260) | previous rank: unranked Overshadowed in an offense that has Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and Dwayne Jarrett. Byrd had 37 receptions in 2004, all coming in the Trojans' final eight games. 20. Eric Winston, OT, Miami (6-7½, 315) | previous rank: 12 A left tackle for the Hurricanes, he could move to the right side in the NFL. He has given up too much outside pressure in Miami's first two games, and hasn't been able to neutralize the pass rush of the defensive ends he's facing. A former tight end with great athleticism, Winston is coming off a knee injury that cost him most of 2004. 21. Rodrique Wright, DT, Texas (6-5, 310) | previous rank: 7 Wright had only one sack and three tackles for loss last season compared to eight sacks and 12 tackles for loss in 2003, but the drop-off can be attributed to a high ankle sprain that dogged him most of the season. A hard worker with great attitude and intelligence, he could be a high first-rounder when all is said and done. 22. Justin London, LB, UCLA (6-1, 234) | previous rank: 25 London is off to a good start for the undefeated Bruins. Leads the team with 17 solo tackles in the first three games. 23. Thomas Howard, LB, UTEP (6-2½, 233) | previous rank: 13 Came to UTEP as a walk-on defensive back and is now a potential first-rounder. Howard is a gifted athlete with 4.4 speed who makes a "Wow!" play in every game. 24. Nick Mangold, C, Ohio St. (6-4, 290) | previous rank: unranked He has the type of skills that will make him a future Pro Bowler at the next level. 25. Marcus McNeill, OT, Auburn (6-7½, 335) | previous rank: 15 A mountainous tackle with the feet, quickness, balance and strength to warrant a high first-round grade. DROPPED Johnathan Scott, OT, Texas (6-6½, 310) | previous rank: 17 A very intelligent player who has allowed only half a sack in the last two seasons, Scott looks primed to put together a phenomenal senior year. Jeremy Trueblood, OT, Boston College (6-8, 322) | previous rank: 19 The tallest member of the BC team has been a reliable three-year starter. Gabe Watson, DT, Michigan (6-3½, 330) | previous rank: 22 Does not put up a huge number of tackles but is very adept at plugging the middle of the offensive front, thus freeing the middle linebacker to run to the football. Davin Joseph, OL, Oklahoma (6-3, 312) | previous rank: 23 Has moved outside to left tackle after playing last season at guard, but Joseph will likely be a guard at the pro level. Joseph will be especially important this year as he will be protecting the blind side of Oklahoma's quarterback. James Wyche, DE, Syracuse (6-5½, 263) | previous rank: 24 Wyche really started to come into his own late last year. He's always been athletically and physically gifted, and last year there was a dramatic difference in his play compared to 2002 and 2003. As a freshman and sophomore, Wyche had a total 3½ sacks and 8½ tackles for loss. In 2004, Wyche had 5½ sacks and 15½ TFL and in his first game of 2005, he goes out against West Virginia and made his presence felt with seven tackles, one forced fumble, and one pass breakup. Mel's Hot Juniors Quarterback Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green Brady Quinn, Notre Dame Running back Reggie Bush, USC Laurence Maroney, Minnesota Michael Bush, Louisville Lorenzo Booker, Florida State Brian Calhoun, Wisconsin LenDale White, USC Wide receiver Chad Jackson, Florida Santonio Holmes, Ohio State Tight end Vernon Davis, Maryland Anthony Fasano, Notre Dame Leonard Pope, Georgia Offensive line Justin Blalock (RT), Texas Winston Justice (RT), USC Aaron Sears (LT), Tennessee Joe Thomas (LT), Wisconsin Kyle Young ©, Fresno State Defensive line Haloti Ngata (T), Oregon Mario Williams (DE), NC State LaMarr Woodley (DE), Michigan Ray Edwards (DE), Purdue Linebacker Ahmad Brooks, Virginia Ernie Sims, Florida State Defensive back Darnell Bing (SS), USC LaRon Landry (FS), LSU Devin Hester (CB) Miami Ashton Youboty (CB) Ohio State Bernard Pollard (S) Purdue Richard Marshall (CB) Fresno State
  23. September 22, 2005 Former WashingtonPrep excelling on JUCO scene -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Warchol WashingtonPreps.com Since it had been almost three years since he last laced up his basketball shoes in a game, you should have expected Jonathan Jackson to be rusty. But the versatile 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward/post originally from Vancouver slowly got into shape during his freshman year at Mineral Area College in Missouri, and now he's not only looking forward to a good sophomore year, but another chance at playing Division I basketball as well. It's been a long road but Jackson is almost there. Jackson, who last played as a high school senior at Evergreen High School in 2001-02, has spent the past three years essentially as a nomad. From Evergreen, he sat out a year at Jefferson High School in Portland, and despite never donning a Demos uniform, he earned a scholarship to Eastern Washington. Jackson never played in Cheney in the year-plus that he was there though due to various reasons, so from there he moved on to Mineral Area, where after joining the team at mid-season in 2004-05, he averaged 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds in a reserve role. "Jonathan had a little bit of an up and down freshman season," said Mineral Area head coach Corey Tate. "But I expect him to have a great season this year. He's a great kid who's going to work hard and do some things." Although his numbers weren't mind-blowing last season, Jackson's talents have not gone unnoticed - much like his high school days. His size, length, and ability to play some on the perimeter had several schools intrigued this summer and it's to the point where Jackson is going to sign a letter-of-intent somewhere in November. "He's getting recruited by North Texas, Utah State, UNLV - a lot of guys," Tate said. "He went on a visit to North Texas last weekend, and it went pretty good - he loves the coaching staff. He's got a visit scheduled to Utah State this weekend. After that, he's still trying to get things organized. But he'll sign in the fall." Tate noted that Jackson is taking is time in making his decision. But one thing he believes his emerging big man will benefit the most from is a school that will allow him to play his game. "He needs to go somewhere where they let the big guys step out and shoot it," Tate said. "That's his greatest attribute."
