Mangrum scored 45 of his team's 59 points in a road victory over Gunter last night. (59-52) Translating HS game minutes (32) to the NBA's 48, Mangrum would have scored approx. 68 points with NBA minutes. As of last week, Mangrum lead the Metroplex in scoring at 28.2 ppg. He has since scored 32 and 45 respectively

Besides Quarterback and the Offensive Line, the Defensive Line was a major weakness and dissapointment in 05. Dickey will probably redshirt the entire freshmen class. Where's the improvement on the D Line? I'd like to see 1-2 Juco (impact) players to come in in the fall. Looks like again, we're going to load up on TE's & DB's. I see alot more of the same (defense on the field too long) unless the DLine is addressed (In a major way)

http://www.aggieathletics.com/coaches.php?SID=WBB&CID=130 Don't remember if they hired Judy Buckles or Tina Slinker over Blair but I knew it was a huge mistake at the time. Blair was very interested in the NT job but not even afforded an interview (seems our AD had his mind made up and preferred a woman) Buckles, if you recall, married Corky Nelson. (Souce: Gary Blair - he told me so)

Bell's shot at buzzer lifts San Jacinto past Jacksonville Ben Bell broke the hearts of Jacksonville College Jaguars players and fans alike, when he knocked down a jump shot at the buzzer to give the San Jacinto College Ravens a 68-67 Region XIV Conference win at Curtis Carroll Field House Wednesday night. The Ravens (10-6 overall, 4-4 in conference) inbounded the ball with just 12.30 seconds to play in the game and worked their way up the court. After a couple of passes, San Jacinto reached its end of the floor and Bell got the ball in the corner. As the final seconds ticked off the game clock, he dribbled around just long enough to create space and get an open shot to win the game. “It’s tough,” Jacksonville College head coach Greg Young said of the loss. “You feel for the kids. They are the ones that played their fannies off and played so hard, and put themselves in position to win, and made all the plays that they could make. “They (the Ravens) just made a good shot on us. What else can you do? You have got to get ready for the next one. That is all you can do.” -- Jacksonville Daily News Through December 10, 2005 FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE (At least 50 attempts) Player . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Blue Zetuche TexasHoops.com Recruiting Analyst For the second time in less than a week, SMU has grabbed yet another player from the 2007 class from the Dallas Metroplex area. This time SMU picks up a versatile foward that can go inside and out. 6'7" Alex Malone from Mansfield Timberview has made his pledge to join Jonathan Sloan as a future Mustang. The soft spoken Malone talks about his verbal commitment just minutes after leaving the basketball gym. "I committed to SMU earlier tonight," said Malone. "It was an easy decision because of location and I like the coaches." Malone goes on talking about the basketball program at SMU and what he liked about it. "SMU is a very athletic, quick, strong team that I feel that I fit in." Malone leaves no doubt that he will be ready to play at the Conference USA level by the time the fall of 2007 rolls around. "I was told that I will have the chance to play both the four and the three position. I feel that I perform well from the wing. My strength is my outside shot, and then get the defense off balance and penetrate. I do need to improve my ball handling skills and I work on that daily." Along side of Malone was his father, Otis Malone who was a big part of his decision making process. "I am really pleased with the opportunity to see my son play college basketball close by," said a proud Mr. Malone. "Coach Tubbs and his staff treat their players very well and you can tell how much they love basketball and their players." Timberview is 1-1 in district with eight games left to go and Malone has a few goals for his team. "We are focused on winning district and our next step is a trip to state." Malone is planning on studing engineering at SMU. Texas Hoops Analysis: Malone is a long and lanky athlete who can run the floor and finishes well on the move. He is a good leaper, can finish at the rim and has long arms. He is a nice rebounder and shot blocker and can put the ball on the floor from 12 feet and finish. He will need to get much stronger for the next level but has the time and frame to add the necessary weight. Talk about it in:

TexasHoops.com Recruiting Staff After persevering through all the controversy surrounding his transfer to South Oak Cliff, Ronnie Morgan has emerged on the basketball court in a big way. The athletic 6-foot-7, 210-pound has fit right in with his new teammates, and has given SOC a tremendous second option after Darrell Arthur. Morgan got some college recruiting interest in the fall, but decided to wait things out just in case something else came up. From all indications, it has. "The season has been going really good so far," Morgan said. "We just beat Kimball the other night, and we're ranked like number two or three in the state. We're about to take off to New York to play a game too. It's been great." In addition to the team doing well, Morgan has had his share of highlights as well. "I'm averaging about 15 or 16 points and about nine rebounds," Morgan said. "I had a 40-point game earlier this year too. My role is different now. The team depends on me to score more, instead of just rebounding and defending." The increased offensive production has no doubt caught the eyes of college coaches, many of whom have made the trip down to South Dallas to check out SOC's talented roster. Morgan almost wasn't available to be recruited - he had offers from and took visits to schools such as Louisiana Tech, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Western Illinois in the fall. He's still considering those schools but is open to newcomers - and recently a school from a high-major conference has sent overtures. "Right now I'm planning on visiting Michigan after the season," Morgan said. "They want someone who can come in who's big and strong. I'm pretty sure that they're going to offer me, and Coach Amaker is coming down to talk to me soon. If they offer, I might just jump on it." Morgan noted that he's also been hearing from UNLV a lot lately and is certainly listening to anyone else who might want to call. It's still a little early though and he certainly wants to concenrate on helping SOC win another 4A state title. Keep in touch with TexasHoops.com for the most up-to-date information on his college recruitment. Texas Hoops Analysis: Ronnie is an athletic and strong paint player who uses his body well in the lane. He is a lefty who finishes well on the low block, has good spring around the goal, gets easy buckets with his active body in the paint, runs the floor very well and is a good rebounder. He is a physical player who will compete on defense and fight for loose balls. He is raw on the offensive end and as he improves his low post game, he will be a tough player to defend. Talk about it in: The Message Boards Note: Ronnie is having a great year and replaces former 6-9 SOC and Baylor signee Kevin Rogers very nicely. Correction on Tx Hoops' Analysis: Ronnie is right handed. Brother J'Misson "Bobo" Morgan is a 6-10, 265 lb Soph center at SOC. Not fully developed yet but should be a force by his senior season.

Blue Zertuche TexasHoops.com Recruiting Analyst Richardson Pearce's 6'8" Jr. post player, Jonathan Sloan made a verbal commitment earlier this week to attend college near home. He won't have to travel far to hit the campus of SMU in the fall of 2007. After taking an unofficial visit to North Texas and one to SMU, it was a decision that just felt right. "I chose SMU after talking to my family," said Sloan. "We felt that it was the best place to go." One thing that stuck out in Sloan's mind on his unofficial visit was the way that coach Tubbs conducts himself during practice. "On the court coach Tubbs is really positive with the players, and is a good coach." With a record of 3-3 in district play and stuck in a four way tie for third, Sloan feels that consistency is the key to winning. "We go on long streaks during the game and make our shots," said Sloan. "Then we let the other team go on a streak of their own to get themselves back in the game. We need to be more consistent on both ends of the court. Sloan clogs up the middle for Pearce, but feels that with some time and practice he can develop into becoming a wing player. "The SMU coaches haven't said where they will play me, but I can play the four for them. I need to work on my strength and ball handeling skills and then maybe I can play the wing." Sloan is not sure what he will study, but he is interested in coaching. Texas Hoops Analysis: JONATHAN is a very smart post player that plays hard and is scrappy. He has a big frame and takes up space in the lane. He likes to score on the block and has good footwork and hands. He will rebound and is a good passer from the high post.

Thanks Rick! I was just listing guys from the recent past that some of the newer poster could relate to. E-bone, thanks for your post below on what your expectations are for the program (a few days ago) Though I must admit, I don't quite follow you, at least you chimed in; when Calvin didn't. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I don't have a required number of wins by a certain year or anything like that. I just want to see an improved team on the floor every year, which is something that I have indeed seen. However, I think that we are nearing the time when our basketball teams take the step to the next level. That doesn't mean winning conference every year, but the occasional conference championship, compete year in and year out in the conference tournament, and play in one of the two post season tournaments every year are places that I think these programs should be in the near future. Since I started following NT basketball I have really wanted a NCAA birth for the men's team, and I think that will happen sooner rather than later. I just hope when it does I am able to make the trip to see them play." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E-bone, I forgot to include Rich Young with the 2005 class. As for as Edwards, if he has played limited time against Hardin-Simmons, UT Perminan Basin, SFA, Angelo St. etc., JJ's not going to play him in conference. Hopefully we're loading up next year with newer/better talent. The following year, JJ gets to add 4 more ships to a pretty nice foundation. (When this happens, Lionel Brown will not be here or Rich Young). Shawson Johnson was only here 1 semester but he raised my vision for big time basketball in Denton. The 2005 class was a let down. I, like others, have waited patiently for JJ to load up. I am now thinking it will the 2007-2008 season (for our banner year) If we don't make our feelings/expectation known, we will continue to be a mediocre program. E-bone, imagine RV reciting your above expectations to JJ. Do you think he would have a clear understanding of what was expected of him? Posters have been critical of students and alumni turnout. I'm convinced that winning and fun basketball is what is needed. Additionally, a better home schedule. How in the world could we attract 10,500 fans back in 1976? 8,000 fans for a few other contest. The time is now!!! Understand that many of us are sick and tired of being sick and tired of mediocrity in our programs. When need to position ourselves for a better conference yesterday. Below average junior college recruits and/or high school kids with potential (and upside) ain't making it happen soon enough.

Calvin, I said that I didn't like this recruiting class! (which includes Stewart) Have not seen anything to change my mind I also stated that my expectation for this team and program is to be a top 75 team. I base my opinion of who will come in and elevate the program. Who can play top-75 ball. Stewart is just a role player on a team of role players. (Excluding K. Davis & our center) Stewart is a 6-8 power forward weighing less than 200 pounds (without an outside game and who can't bang with top-75 talent. Stewart doesn't start for a top-75 program or come off the bench. If you and others are excited about Stewart and his career 8 points, fine. Calvin, I realize that Denver was a nice team but we are playing perhaps the softest home schedule in the history of D! I'm dissapointed that JJ did not, and maybe can not, recruit better players. I hope like hell I am wrong, but I can't get excited with what I have seen. I believe I stated that Stewart would be a backup for 4 years. Coupled with the others, this class is terrible! Where does he play next year Calvin? Does he start ahead of Clarence Muse (6-10 JUCO center) Does he start ahead of the kid from Arizona State (PF/C position) Quincy Williams, is a better player and should play before Stewart. Don't tell me that we can't attract top-75 talent to UNT! Reginald Durskin (sp) Chris Davis Leonard Hopkins Shawnson Johnson Jason Miller Kendrick Davis The 2005 class Justin Howerton (No Playing time) Harold Edwards (El busto) Lionel Brown (OK, but could have found a better HS backup pg than a JUCO) Harold Stewart (See above) I'm sorry, this is not going to meet my expectations (or win a division of the Sun Belt Conference) Again, I posted several questions to the board to better understand what they expected. I've just re-stated mine. I don't care to hear the "P" word about our players we recruit 5-6 years into the program. "We need to win now" Go Mean Green

Grand Prairie 2000 1988 Oliphant: NTSU’s surprise prize in fast class North Texas State coach Corky Nelson recruited this winter looking for speed. Nelson got just that and a few surprises. “I feel real good about our recruiting,” Nelson said Wednesday, the national signing day. “On paper this is definitely the best group we’ve signed since I’ve been here. This group gives us more team speed and that was what we were really looking for.” Of the 22 players the Eagles signed, three are running backs and four defensive backs, including Roosevelt’s Steve Oliphant. Oliphant, a 6-1, 180 All Metro selection, had committed earlier this week to LSU. “I guess I might have been a little bit surprised he signed with us,” Nelson said. “But he saw us play three times last season, so he knew a lot about us. So it wasn’t really that much of a shock.” Oliphant’s Roosevelt teammate, Thomas Thompson (6-0, 160), Midland Lee’s Eugene Farmer (6-0, 170) and Longview’s Joe Brookins (6-0, 180) also will join an Eagles secondary that lost only free safety Mike Rhone from 1987’s 7-5 team. Nelson also loaded up at wide receiver, running back and linebacker, NTSU returns three regular receivers, but “we don’t have a great long-range threat,” Nelson said. Burleson’s Richard Clark (6-1, 180) and South Oak Cliff’s Kenton Paul (5-8, 160) could fill that void. Running backs Charles White (6-0, 201) of Big Spring and Vincent Moten (5-8, 180) of Waco La Vega will also help increase the Eagles’ speed. NTSU also signed Tim Collier a 6-1, 181 pound fullback from Ranger Junior College. Nelson said he might add two or three receiver-running backs this week. “When you talk about Kenton Paul you’re talking about a lot of speed,” Nelson said. “Or when you talk about a Vincent Moten or a Richard Clark or a Charles White you’re talking about players who all have excellent speed. Our main concern was getting immediate help at linebacker and the receiving and running back positions. All those guys can come in and make an impact. I don’t know if they’ll be starters, but they’ll help our depth.” Linebackers Willie Hughes (6-0,200) of Ennis, La Grange’s Keith Wilkerson (6-2, 215) and Conroe’s Mark Haynes (6-0, 220) will join starters Robbie Legg and Byron Gross, a second-team All-Southland Conference selection last season as a freshman. “All of them will play,” Nelson said. “We don’t have any real depth there, and they will fill in real well.” In addition to Oliphant, Nelson’s other surprise Wednesday was losing Garland tight end-defensive end Uzo Okeke. Okeke (6-1, 218) had committed to NTSU last week, but signed with SMU. Both lines, especially the defensive line, had been an area of concern for Nelson. “I feel good about what we got,” Nelson said. “But I would have liked to have got maybe a nose guard and a couple other kids. That might be the area where we fell short.” North Texas State Signings Joe Brooking, Longview 6-0, 180 DB Bobby Burk, San Antonio 6-2, 230 OL Richard Clark, Burleson 6-1, 180 WR Tim Collier, Ranger JC 6-1, 181 RB Noel Crum, Lewisville 6-2, 252 DL Eugene Farmer, Midland Lee 6-0, 170, DB Mark Haynes, Confore 6-0, 220 LB Lynn Heathman, Kilgore JC 6-5, 269 OL Willie Hughes, Ennis 6-0, 200 LB Kenton Paul, SOC 5-8, 160 WR Russell McMillan, Garland 6-4, 190 DL Darin Montgomery, Gladewater 6-0, 195 DL Wendal Mosley, Beaumont West Brook 5-10, 180 QB Vincent Moten, Waco LaVega 5-8, 180, RB Steve Oliphant, Roosevelt 6-1, 180 DB Bryan Paxton, Round Rock 6-5, 245 OL Robert Penn, Navarro JC 6-2 288 OL Jerry Raymond, Trinity Valley JC 6-3, 238 OT Steve Robinson, Southlake Carroll 6-4, 240 OT Thomas Thompson, Roosevelt 6-0 160 DB Charles White, Big Spring 6-0, 201 DB Keith Wilkerson, LaGrange 6-2, 215 LB 1976 Mean Green Coach Recruits New Talent Hayden Fry, athletic director and head football coach, announced Wednesday that 12 high school football players have signed national letters of intent with North Texas. With the first announcement of recruits for the Mean Green, Fry pointed out that a similar number of signing would be completed by the weekend. David Adkisson, a highly sought player from Lake Dallas, is expected to sign with Eagles later today. Half of Wednesday’s signees come from Carter High School in Dallas, a team that advanced to the state 4A quarterfinals in 1975. “Our success the first day assures us of an outstanding group of freshman football players for next fall,” Fry said. “Its has been one of the most competitive years ever because of the large number of top players and I think we will have done quite well,” he added. Two of the first day signees are quarterbacks, Dallas Carter’s Marty Morrison and Houston Washington’s Bryant Bryant. Bryant, son of Washington’s Coach James Bryant, was the top punter in Houston with a 43.7 average. The first day recruits for North Texas (linemen include linebackers, backs include receivers) BACKS: Byron Bryant, 6-3, 195 Houston Washington; Bruce Chambers, 5-10, 165 Dallas Carter; Larry Dixon, 6-0, 185 Dallas South Oak Cliff; Malcolm Jones, 5-8, 165, Dallas Carter; Marty Morrison, 6-2, 200 Dallas Carter; Danny Whitaker, 6-0 185, Decatur. LINEMEN: Clarence Chase, 6-5, 260, Waco Richfield; Robert Foster, 6-4, 255 Allen; David Hagerman, 6-4, 215 Dallas Carter; Melvin Lark, 6-2, 215, Dallas Carter; Mark McNeeley, 6-3, 235, Dallas White; Tony Palmer, 6-4, 250, Dallas Carter. Fry Adds Six to Letter of Intent Roster North Texas added six high school football players to its national letter of intent roster Thursday. The list includes David Adkisson of Lake Dallas, a 6-7 220 pound athlete who has a choice between football and basketball or both. Adkisson’s brother, Kevin, is a freshman running back at North Texas. His father, Jack Adkisson, is more widely known as pro wrestler Fritz von Erich. Other line candidates are Greg Davidson, 6-2, 230, of Stafford Dulles; and Brian O’Keefe, 6-4, 240 of Houston Bellaire. Backs signing with the Mean Green are Gary Dirks, 6-2, 215, Paris North Lamar; Jimmy Lockhart, 6-0,190 Dallas W.T. White; and Walter Sims, 6-1, 200 Waco Richfield. Coach Hayden Fry announced 12 signings Wednesday, the first day for the national honor. According to Fry, this has been one of the Eagle’s most productive years in recruiting. “Now that we are competing with the “big boys” for talent, things have gotten much tighter, but we have done very well,” Fry said.

What's the latest on Seneca Collins? 6-4 or 6-5, 250. I would rather see him at the 3 position on the basketball team than DE. Is he still at NT?

That looks like another 2-9 defense if we don't get any juco help in the fall

Thanks Euless for your comments and everyone else for sharing your thoughts on this subject. We all should attempt to make as many games as we can as a show of support. I think it is important for our coaches to know that we support them but at the same time, we expect them to respect us and make us proud alums. We want bragging rights in the work place!

"Appears that Cooley has not been to any games by the way he started the post. Shame on you for such a critical run down of the players if you have never seen them play." EagleD- "Go to the game and your questions will be answered and if you can not make it because you live in a place far far away tune in via internet. It is "way" evident you have not listened to or attended a game either, like Cooley." EulessEagle Your response to my post is exactly why I felt the question(s) about expectations needed to be asked. You seem to lead the pact in posting thoughts and opinions based on emotion, rather than facts. This is a critical time for our university. Everyone desires to be in a better football conference. The consensus is Conference USA. When CUSA shows up to conduct their due-diligence of prospective members, overall facilities and men’s basketball must be in order. As alums, our obligation should be to ensure that our university continues to strive for excellence. We must stay focused on the big picture. I submit to you that had it not been for demanding UT alums and boosters, UT would not have won a national championship. We have a right to know where the program is headed and on whose watch. Euless, I have 2 sons attending UNT where I paying out of my a** in fees; imposed by various areas of the university, as well as athletics. To not complain would be taxation without representation. Euless, what was so objectionable to my questions? Like you, I like Johnny Jones. I believe the kids when they speak highly of him. Unfortunately, this is not about how nice of a guy he is in the big scheme of things. I’m sorry that you took offense! In response to your false accusation that I don’t attend games, let me assure you that I do. I would never attempt to critique a player or coach without seeing the games myself. I have seen 3 badly played games this year (Nichols St, SFA & New Orleans). While visiting my sons in Denton, I also sat in on a practice session. For those who are students of the game, I don’t think it is necessary to see every game to form an opinion. I don’t think Jeff Sagarin (sp) has been to the Pit many times, yet he ranks our Mean Green somewhere above 200. Las Vegas does an outstanding job establishing lines yet I don’t think many of those guys attend many games. I can’t lie to you Euless; I did not circle Abilene Christian, Harden-Simmons, Angelo St or UT-Permian Basin on my calendar. While an undergrad at NT (first year 1975) I attended every home game. I also made some road games as well. Unlike most grads, I didn’t stop attending games after graduation. In fact, for a number of years, I felt that I was the only fool in the Dallas area making most games dating back to the late 70’s. Quite frankly, I’m not sure if anyone has attended more NT games than I have over the same time frame. Euless, a life-long hobby of mine is saving ticket stubs of games, concerts and other events that I have attended. If I agree to fax you some ticket stubs of UNT basketball games will you cut me some slack? I really need to get a life Euless, because in addition to UNT games, I try to catch all the local high school talent and teams in the metroplex. This has also been a fun hobby of mine; following where the kids will end up after their high school careers. (Almost all Dallas area kids recruited to UNT Euless, I saw during their high school careers) I hope you like Collin Mangrum next year Euless. I’ve seen him play last year in a holiday tournament, at the state tournament in Austin and 2 games this summer in Denton. (Denton Shootout) I like him Euless, trust me! Euless, I hate that JJ has not given me an opportunity to scout more recruits since most of them come from far away places. It was easy for me to see that Ty Thomas and Ron Harris wouldn’t be impact players after watching them at Arlington Oak Ridge and Arlington Sam Houston HS. Euless, I felt real good about Leonard Hopkins after watching him back to his sophomore year at Dallas Lincoln. Euless, I wish you could go back a few years, on this board, and read where I stated that Dallas Lincoln had a 6-6 soph sleeper with a world of potential. (Chris Bosh is doing quite well now in the NBA) Euless, I can go on and on and as far back as you would like to prove that I attend games. I can’t, however, tell you that I’ve made it to Mineral Area. (Still trying to find out where the hell that is!) Anyway, back to JJ and the program Euless, consider the fact that JJ has just completed his 6th recruiting class. Below are his predecessors and their number of classes: Vic Trilli 5 Tim Jankovich 4 Jimmy Gales 7 Tommy Newman 3 Bill Blakeley 8 Gene Robbins 4 Don’t get me wrong Euless, but most of these guys (if not all of them) were fired after less time and more wins. Bill Blakeley was God around here. Blakeley posted the best record in school history and had 3 straight 20+ teams. He also recruited Spud Webb to NT but Spud left after they showed Blake the door. As you may know, his 2005-2006 squad was the best in the State. Jimmy Gales coached the only team to go to the big dance. Vic Trilli couldn't coach but recruited the best crop of kids since the early to mid 70’s. Now Euless, again, I don’t mean to piss anyone off but at what point do we ask ourselves how long should it take? Please don't be fooled by our record! Euless, try not to read anymore into a post than what’s there. My desire, like others, is to have a Top-75 program (in the near future) If JJ is a great coach, but we are ranked somewhere north of 200, we need to recruit better players. Is this logical? If we have good to great talent with a great coach then you would not be reading this post. Looking at the teams ranked around 75-80 currently, you would have to agree that we only have 3-4 of our kids that can make those rosters. Not bashing JJ, just want better faster! Go Mean Green!
-
No Dallasites directly out of HS under the JJ administration. The last Dallas ISD kids right out of HS were recruited by Vic Trilli: (2000-2001) Leonard Hopkins, Dallas Lincoln Jerome Rogers, Dallas Madison Will Smith, Dallas Lincoln (All starters at one point) JJ's best players transferred in: Kendrick Davis, Arkansas Shawnson Johnson, LSU As you know, its important to have coaches with Texas ties. The current roster is about 50-50 with Texas kids (outside of the area) vs out of state kids. Additionally, we bring in more out of state kids next year. It's not my intent to bash JJ, but it is-what it is!

Having learned a lesson from the Darrell Dickey/UNT football program debates, it is clear to me that we all are on different pages regarding our expectations of the head coach and the programs. To help understand one’s post regarding basketball, it would be nice to preface posts with the following: Where you feel the men’s basketball program should be at this point? What are your expectations? What’s acceptable or what’s not? What are your expectations of Johnny Jones, the players and recruiting? I respectfully request this additional information to help ensure that discussions/opinions are based on apples to apples. For instance, we continue to read differing opinions/expectations from most posters about the program. Some feel that this is the best team in years. Some feel that JJ is the best coach in a number of years. Some feel that we are as talented as we have ever been. Some believe that the most recent recruited class is the best in a number of years. Many do not agree with any of this. Like you, I thoroughly enjoy reading the many opinions expressed here. Because individual expectations are not necessarily known, I think it maybe difficult for others to fully appreciate your point of view. Anyway, just for a little while, can we also state our expectation(s) for the benefit of the entire board? I have personally followed the program closely since 1975. Taking facilities and location into consideration, I expect our basketball program to be a top 75 program. I also expect UNT to win the Sun Belt Conference and tournament or be in serious contention; thus making it to the big dance/NIT annually. We are obviously not there; therefore, I expect JJ to recruit better players than we currently have. (within 3-4 years) I feel that we only have 3-4 kids with top 75 ability. Having had this opinion for a few years, I am particularly disappointed with our 2005-2006 recruiting class: Last night’s box scores North Texas Eagles STARTERS MIN FGM-A FTM-A OFF REB AST PF PTS Q. Knight offered Justin Wilkerson, a marginal player, a scholarship when he was a freshman in high school. Makes no sense!

Difference of opinion has recruit, Tech parting ways Father says school ditched son; Tech: son may not have succeeded 12:17 AM CST on Saturday, January 7, 2006 By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News Rockwall senior Michael Godwin rarely left the house without donning a red-and-black shirt or hat. For Christmas, he received more gear bearing the logo of Texas Tech, the college for which he signed in November to play basketball next season. But recently the Godwin family learned that coach Bob Knight was skeptical the 6-8 swingman would succeed at Tech. As a result, the Godwins requested that Tech release Michael from the scholarship, and the school has done so. "We were whole-hog Tech," Michael's father, Charlie Godwin, said. "All of a sudden, Knight didn't want him." Texas Tech officials did not respond to phone calls, but the athletic department put a statement on its Web site Friday afternoon. The statement read, in part, that coaches were concerned Godwin was "a completely different player" than he was when they scouted him on his summer-league team. "The coaching staff was very concerned he would enroll at Texas Tech, would not be able to play at the Big 12 level, and Texas Tech would not be in a position to renew the scholarship award the following year," the statement read. Michael Godwin declined comment. Charlie Godwin said Knight and his staff had been communicating with Rockwall coach Lynn Nabi the last couple of weeks. It was Nabi who told Godwin and his parents about Tech's concerns after a practice on New Year's Eve. "The message was very clear they did not want Michael anymore," Charlie Godwin said. On its Web site, Tech said it wanted to make the Godwins aware of the coaches' evaluation "while he had ample time to consider what was best for him and his future." Charlie Godwin said he didn't consider Tech's actions in his son's best welfare. "They have hurt my son emotionally," he said. "If they had concerns, why did they make the offer? They should have looked at him to sign in the late period." Because he signed the national letter of intent during the early signing period in November, Godwin was guaranteed a one-year scholarship to Tech. But the letter wouldn't have assured him a spot on the team. Charlie Godwin said the family asked for a release from the letter after Nabi conveyed Tech's opinion. The National Letter of Intent office said it receives about 30,000 letters annually in all Division I and Division II sports, and about 350 students seek release from them. Tech's Internet statement includes text from a letter Knight wrote to Godwin, a letter the family said it was awaiting but hadn't received as of Friday afternoon. "Your decision will have to be based on how much more effective you think you can be than you have shown thus far in the high school season," Knight says in the letter. "If you feel you are playing at your best, I simply think it would be a mistake for you to come to Tech. However, the final decision is up to you and your folks and we will go along with whatever you decide." Tech assistant coaches have attended several of Godwin's recent games. Knight attended Rockwall's 44-41 loss Dec. 20 to state-ranked Tyler John Tyler, in which Godwin scored 13 points. Godwin, rated the No. 35 senior in the state by TexasHoops .com, is averaging 8.3 points a game for Rockwall (15-4). He scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds and eight assists in Tuesday's victory over Mesquite Horn. Godwin averaged 7.7 points and 7.4 rebounds as a junior. Charlie Godwin said his son is the same caliber player as when Tech noticed him during the summer with Texas Top Prospects. He is handling the ball more in Rockwall's offense than he did with the summer team. "No, he's not a 30 points per game scorer," Charlie Godwin said. "That's not his style. They knew full well. ... Against John Tyler, he played all positions. They might want to see who had all the assists." Godwin will reopen his recruiting, his father said, and schools such as UT-San Antonio, Central Florida, North Texas and Midwestern State have shown interest. "I am so proud of my son," Charlie Godwin said. "He's picked it up and moved forward."

Clearly Shawnson Johnson (if you forget about his free-throws) I never saw one player handle Johnson one on one within the conference. It's almost not even fair to compare a guy who played here 1 semester to guys who have/had been here longer. This kid did not have the luxury of adapting to JJ's system. He practically walked out of the LSU's half-time locker room right into Sunbelt Conference games in the Super Pit. I'm sure you would agree, with a greater understanding of JJ's system and an extra year to develop chemistry with teammates, has help Simpson improve over last year. I'm just glad we can have such a positive post about our personnel. Shawson Johnson, I believe, finished high on our all-time block list after 1 semester.
