Evidently Jim McIngvale didn’t get the memo that we were not joining the Sunbelt Conference to stay in the Sunbelt Conference. Our Athletic Department did a great job of helping craft a conference friendly Sunbelt where we should be expected to excel. The Sunbelt was and still should be, a stop gap conference, where we should run the table year end and out (until a regional Conference USA type conference come calling. "Dickey Ball" has been destructive to the blue print. 4-Conference Championships with "Dickey Ball" have not generated any interest in the minds of area recruits and our growing student body. Darrell has put a boring product on the field for 9 years where it has not been remotely competitive outside the worse conference in all of football. Our recruiting classes had become sub par by even Sunbelt standards. Thank you for staying true to the vision! I can appreciate the loyalty Mattress Mac has shown Darrell Dickey. The facts are Mr McIngvale, UNT is honoring the last 2 years (or 3) of his contract. RV, and others, have been very patient with Darrell Dickey, as he has been here longer than any other coach in modern North Texas history. I was one of the fans in attendance (during half-time of a men’s game) when Mattress Mac proclaimed his love for UNT as the main reason for his 1mm donation. Though we hurting for money, I would rather go down to D1 AA or drop football for a while, instead of taking money from alums with the type of strings attached as those of Jim McIngvale. Why would Darrell Dickey, or any other person with any semblance of pride, want a facility named after them under such circumstance? We should not even remotely entertain naming anything, let alone Hall of Fame, for a coach with a losing record? Our program should be better than that! If need be, I say, send the million dollars back to McIngvale and tell him to stick the money up his mattress. If you feel a need to, in fact, name the field after Dickey, it should be called, “The Practice Field in Denton, named for Darrell Dickey because Jim McIngvale held us hostage” Just my opinion!

You would think Darrell wearing a stupid Mattress Mac cap for 2-3 hours (on national TV) was more than enough marketing for 1MM. I appreciate the guy paying for the team to fly down for Andrew Smith's funeral, but this guy has not exactly been a Boone Pickens to this university.

North Texas a favorite in men’s hoops race
Cooley replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Sunbelt basketball has always been better than Sunbelt football. (Dickey's teams won the league with less members and start ups (To D1 football) Sunbelt basketball has also been ranked much higher nationally than the worse that is, Sunbelt football. Jones' team will be better in 06-07 but should clearly be the favorite to advance to the Big dance in 07-08 -

UNT signee Torrian Timms scored 3 points before fouling out. Helped foul out Dunbar's Standout Soph Post. (Pope) Trailed Dunbar throughout the contest but caught and past them in the final 2 minutes.

On another signee note, I just made it back from the rain slick roads from Garland's new Special Events Center. (Watching Dallas Lincoln's girls lose to Waxahachie) UNT signee Torrian Timms (Waxahachie) had about 6 or 8 points and a number of rebounds. Waxahachie advances to Austin next week by playing a nice team game against a much smaller but talented Lincoln squad (going away 57-39) Timms looks like the 3rd best player on their team. Their shooting guard Nickie Hughes has signed with UT and their point guard (Destiny Hughes) looks like a nice propect as well. Though Timms does not have an offensive game, she has a nice big body at 6-0 to bang down low for Slinker next year.

Jason Howell SicEmSports.com If you would have asked Arlington Bowie defensive back Andre Richardson a week ago where he was looking to play college ball, he would have laughed and told you he didn't even know if he would get the chance. Richardson and his teammates are working hard to ensure that 2006 is a success at Bowie. If you have followed recruiting for any period of time you know that things can change at a rapid pace, and last week the 6-foot, 175-pound cornerback found out that his dream of playing college football was very much a possibility. "Baylor just offered yesterday," Richardson said Sunday afternoon. "That's the first one yes sir." Baylor is not the only one showing interest in the Bowie defensive back with Oklahoma St, and UNT also getting involved. The Bears offer, however, has given them the early edge along with another Texas school. "Well I'm leaning towards Baylor right now, but one of my other favorites is Houston right now," He said. "Houston that's where a lot of us wanted to go. Baylor I've already got some people going there, and they were the first ones to offer so I'm kind of leaning with them right now." This spring and summer, Richardson plans to attend a few junior days and camps, but will spend the majority of the time with his Bowie teammates. "My mom told me I need to get to some (camps)," he said. "I'm going to try to go to the Nike one in Ft. Worth, and one of the coaches from Baylor told me that he wanted me to go to their clinic. About now that's really it. "During the summer I'm really trying to focus on 7-on-7 because that's what our coaches are planning. We're supposed to be going out to Arkansas for 7-on-7." This spring the Volunteers have seen a few changes in their program, with the biggest being coach Kenny Perry taking over as head coach, and Richardson and his teammates are working hard to make sure changes also occur on the field. "We just want to win," Richardson said. "That's the main thing. No individual achievements, we're just trying to get to the playoffs."

Adam Munsterteiger ColoradoPrepReport.com AURORA, Colo. - A two-year starter behind center, CJ Williams has developed into one of the Centennial State's top quarterbacks. Rivals.com Williams threw for 1,683 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2005 as a junior. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound gunslinger from Aurora (Colo.) Cherokee Trail was named honorable mention all-league as a sophomore and honorable mention all-state as a junior. The past two seasons, Williams has completed 285-of-426 passes for 3,083 yards and 29 touchdowns. "His pocket presence is what really separates CJ," explained his father and Cherokee Trail assistant Chuck Williams. "He sits back in the pocket and picks defenses apart with his accuracy throwing the football." Williams has impressive bloodlines. His father played at CSU and in the CFL, his uncle John Williams is currently with the Toronto Argonauts, his grandfather played 14 years in the Canadian football league and his uncle Early Thomas spent 10 years with the New York Jets after graduating from CSU. This off-season, Williams' main goal is to improve on his foot speed. Williams is already starting to draw interest from colleges. "I've gotten e-mails from North Texas and SMU," said his dad. "Right now they just want a lot of game tape, SMU especially. They sound like they are real interested." "I like SMU, CSU, Wyoming, Arizona and North Texas," added CJ. Williams attended an Elite 11 tryout camp at SMU last summer and currently has high interest in the Mustangs. "His sister lives about 20 minutes from the campus of SMU," Chuck Williams explained. "If SMU was ready to offer that would probably be the only school that he would commit to right now. I kind of want him to take his visits and check out everybody." Williams plans to attend the NIKE Training Camp in College Station on April 22nd.

Sports Guy I think the point SUMG was making (& others) is that this is year 5 or 6. When do we start winning? (excluding home games against lower division schools) All I read about, with the freshmen, are words like "Effort", "Potential" "Upside" etc etc. You either come in as a player or you aren't. Juco kids should be expected to come in with a bang. Never doubted Stewart's work ethic, and others, in this latest class. I apologize if I often come across as bashing the kids. I'm dissapointed with the sense of urgency to win, by signing a class of prospects/role players in year 5 or 6. Impact freshmen are all over the place. (not in Denton) If you review the NBA drafts, you will notice that most top HS kids just skip college altogether. (and perform well their freshman year in the NBA). Locally, our own Chris Bosh, played 1 year at Ga Tech before playing 1 year in the NBA. He's an NBA all-star in year 2. FW Dunbar's Jeremis Smith is an impact player at Ga Tech this year. The NBA all-star roster will be full of guys that went right to the NBA after HS. (or 1 or 2 years afterwards) The NFL draft will will be full of underclassmen. (More if the rules would allow them) I can better understand the argument that our freshmen may not be ready to play at UT or Ok but we are not at that level of talent yet. With summer leagues for high school kids and extended tournaments, it's not asking too much for these kids to excel right away as freshman. We are just having a difficult time recruiting the right ones to Denton. The bigger question remains, how long should a coach be given? (albeit a very nice one)

Jason Howell SicEmSports.com This spring college recruiters looking for linemen will be sure to stop through Lancaster High just south of Dallas. The Tigers feature not one but two top linemen in Anthony Morgan and Stephen Thomas. Rivals.com Stephen Thomas is ready to make waves at Lancaster this fall. Thomas, who transferred from North Mesquite, comes in as one of the top defensive linemen in the state, with offers already from Texas A&M and Texas Tech and interest coming from the likes of USC, Texas, Florida St., and Oklahoma. Morgan may not be receiving the same amount of attention as Thomas at this point but the offensive lineman is rising quickly with interest coming from Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma St., Oklahoma, Kansas St., and North Texas. While the two have not been together long, Lancaster coaches have seen enough to realize they have something special on their hands. "We've been noticing since we put them together that the competition is just the next level," Lancaster coach Cliff Keeling said of his two senior linemen. "He (Thomas) walked in here and they had sets the first day and they matched sets evenly. "Now Stephen's probably a little faster in the forty, but Anthony was faster in the shuttle that we put together the other day. So both of them have got a little piece of the pie, a little piece of the puzzle." For now the duo is gearing up for what is expected to be a heated recruiting process. This spring Thomas has plans to make his way out to Texas for Junior Day, while Morgan is still trying to sort things out. "Alabama March the fourth and Texas A&M on the same day so I've got to see which one I'm going to attend," Morgan said. "Oklahoma St. has a junior day also coming up soon." Anthony Morgan is beginning to attract his own attention. This summer Morgan hopes to hit the road and continue to make a name for himself by making his way to a few college campuses. "Summer camps I'll attend a lot of one day camps; because, you know I've got to get out there," Morgan said. "So I'm going to be moving around a lot, and then sticking in the weight room and getting stronger for senior year. "It's kind of too early, but I've thought of a few schools like Texas, Texas Tech, maybe Baylor. I might try to go to one out of state a couple of them out of state maybe two or three things like Oklahoma." Thomas on the other hand is mainly focusing on staying around Lancaster and preparing for the 2006 season. "We're going to see what we can do this summer and get together as a team," Thomas said. "Get stronger and faster and take that step towards a state championship. First we're going to work on a division championship and then we're going to make that step and go through the playoffs and get to the state so that's basically it."

Bigger loss for JJ than Dickey!

Everyone played great and we lost at home by 21 points (in front of 5,000) Lord help JJ if anyone ever has an off night!

Tanner is no Jamario Thomas but his signing, along with Williams, would be a big boost to UNT for future prospects in Southern Dallas County. In recent years, we have not come close to this talent rich area: (3-4 mile radius) Dallas Carter HS Dallas Kimball HS Duncanville HS DeSoto HS Cedar Hill HS Lancaster HS UNT Dallas billboards (in the heart of the area) are sprouting up all over the area.

John Talman Rivals.com Football Recruiting Several schools are playing the waiting game with three-star Robert Williams as the Dallas (Texas) Kimball defensive end is preparing for his big decision. Rivals.com Robert Williams, according to his father, is still undecided. Things got interesting this past weekend as the No. 36 weakside defensive end took a last minute trip to North Texas with one of his teammates. This comes after the 6-foot-4, 200-pound future college defender said that his list had been narrowed down to three schools – Iowa State, Washington State, and UTEP. His father, Robert Williams Sr., says that things are still somewhat open. "He went to North Texas, and when he gets back, we're going to try and sit down to decide where he wants to go," Williams' father said. "He and his teammate went out there this past weekend and when he comes back, we've got to talk." Williams' father says that there is no leader at this point and it appears that more schools could be in the mix than once originally thought. His last reported top three though appears to be in the best position at this point. Rumors also were circulating last week that Washington State may have had a bit of an edge, but the father says that his son is still deciding. "We don't know where he is at with the decision, that's why we need to talk about it," Williams' father said. "It's up in the air right now. We'll have something in the next few days."

TCU could have taken him to their athletic complex and showed him his fathers jersey!

Must have counted at least 12 folks with UT s**t on!

I don't know why we need to try to find excuses for a UNT loss. USA was the better team. They were able to beat U of H when we could not. They now lead the series against us 10-3, 8-3 in Sun Belt games and have defeated us 4 straight times. Our guys played hard, but we are just not talented enough to seriously contend for a Sun Belt title. (Despite playing at home in front of 5,000) Not necessarily ready to pull the plug on this season, but it aint going to happen this year. I'll continue to come out to support their efforts. JJ has some bigger bodies coming in next year and hopefully Ben Bell is better at the point and Collin Mangrum will be a better consistent dual threat coming off the bench (as a 2 or 3) than what we have now

Williams has informed schools that he will only sign if he is allowed to play basketball as well. (his favorite sport)
