Wow! We fire our coach and immediately move out of the bottom 20.

Idea Plumm! Let's round up as many folks as we can to meet us at Eagle Point in Denton one Saturday morning. Our stated purpose will be to hold a symbolic Ground Breaking Ceremony for our new stadium. We can invite as many older alums from as far back as 1890 as we can. Hell, if Joshua Chilton's family is still around, let's invite them. As Darrell Dickey might say, just a bunch of "old f******. We then can invite Mr. Vito out, and others, for some great Mean Green PR. All invited alums must bring a sharp and shinny shovel from the house. (For a serious "Dirt Turning Party") We can then jump in our cars or walk (for those who still can) across I-35. Once there, we conduct the mother of all mock funerals for Theron J. Fouts Field. Let's encourage everyone to bring a bucket as well for donations to Eagle Stadium. Who wouldn't offer minimal financial assistance to help remove such an eyesore from their daily path? Anyway, the goal would be is to bring much needed attention (and donations) nationally, for Eagle Stadium. Consider for a moment the attention from the images and photos that may pop up in the USA Today & CNN news. (Alums from all ages wearing their North Texas Teachers College, Texas Normal College & North Texas State shirts shouting "Go Mean Green" and "Build it Now"! Hell, this innocent gathering could attract considerable donations nationally and locally. Fout's Field could even turn into a must see tourist attraction for travelers visiting the metroplex. ($10 adults - $3 for children - free under 6) Let's hope the public humiliation will move this project along much faster or at least out of the mud. It may even help us identify 5-10 big pocket residents who love the region. I say, Why the hell not? "If we can dream it, let's make it happen"

Looks like we missed a golden opportunity for a doubleheader with SMU the week after! Impressive roster for Miami!

OK Boys and Girls, its time to mark your calendars for August 11th. (Or thereabouts) 8th grade phenom, L.B. Nash of Browne Middle School (Oak Cliff) is scheduled to conduct a press conference @ Friendship West Baptist Church. At this time, young Nash is expected to announce (to the entire community) what high school he will be attending in the fall. Some adults are hailing the kid as "The Next Big Thing". (Ala Kevin Durant) Though I must admit, the kid is awesome; a press conference is totally ridicules. From my understanding, local radio, community papers and D-Magazine have been invited. (By the way, I'm a member of Friendship West where the membership exceeds 10k) I need to talk to my pastor about this! The Leaders: 1) Dallas Lincoln (alma mater of his brother, Byron Eaton) Being pimped to Lincoln by AAU coach Tony Johnson 2) Dallas Kimball (current residential school) 3) DeSoto (would like to play for a strong coach - Chris Dyer) 4) Cedar Hill (alot of young talent to play with) Long shots: Woodrow Wilson (Head coach Pat Washington is a big time recruiter. Coached Team Africa at Global Games) South Oak Cliff (Doesn't see much in the pipeline) A decision is expected soon after the Adidas Phenom Camp (August 10) Stay tuned!!!

Ncaa Transfer And Letter-of-intent Rules
Cooley replied to Buford_Julep's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Thanks for the research Buford! I think that if a kid can figure this out, they should be entitled to play right away anywhere. Damn! -
Rumor is that Fulce is looking to play at a Texas JC in the fall. Let's just have some fun with a starting lineup for 08-09. (because I'm bored!) 2008-2009 Josh White/Ryan McCoy PG Tristan Thompson/Collin Dennis/Adam McCoy SG Roderick Fleming/Joseph Fulce SF (Juco Transfers) George Odufawa PF Center (4 scholarships to find one)

I hope you guys are right about TD not caring about bringing in other top QB's. If this is the true, then he really should go after Kelly Page. (For all the reason's I mentioned earlier). MeanGreen61, I personally don't waste my time with ratings and stars from Rivals, Scout.com or any other recruiting service. No disrespect to you or anyone else, but these services, in my opinion, are for the fans who have never seen these kid play. As you know, winning the recruiting wars is just as important in the off season as winning on the field or court during the season. Die hards fans and alums pay out the *ss for these services. To reward their subscribers, these services generally reward their fan base with higher rankings/stars on their recruits. I'm also convinced that many of these so called scouts have never seen the kids play and often list inaccurate height, times and weight on a consistent basis. Eulesseagle, you asked if two state championship QB was good enough (in the spread offense) Here's my expectation: Many older alums will remember that in 1976 we were ranked as high as #16 in the country. (Football) In basketball, we were a legitimate top 50 program. We arguably had the #1 program in Texas. As a student at the time, this was and continues to be my point of reference in terms of where I'd like to see the program in the very near future. I don't mean to knock a player or recruit! As a fan and alum, I would like to see kids that can help us get back to where we've been and possibly surpass past accomplishments (with much greater resources) I remain unimpressed with 4 Sun Belt Championships during the start up years of the conference. Anyone can blast me all you want but it want change how I feel. In my opinion, we are not making progress to be competitive in the belt. I like the direction we are heading in. I only asked the question (in this thread) to gain a comfort level that we seek the very best and every opportunity. Just say no to mediocrity!!! Go Mean Green Cooley (*****)

Mesquite's Kelly Page was clearly the best quarterback I saw all of last year (in the metroplex) He is also big enough to play at a very high level at any D1 school. (imho) He would also be a perfect fit for the spread offense that Texas Tech fans have come to enjoy over the years, with record passing yardage. Would TD recruit Page (or another top caliber QB), now that his son has committed? A better question would be if more talented quarterback prospects will seriously consider UNT; under the aforementioned circumstances? Though I'm happy that young Riley has elected to come to UNT. We've benefited already locally within the media. I do, however, wonder if his pending signing will deter better QB prospects from UNT over the next 3-4 years. (that could make us better faster) Yes, I do prefer equally or more talented prototype QB's that have the potential to play on Sundays. No, we have not had one of these types in a long long time. I can only hope, right? Hopefully young Riley will develop into a good Sun Belt QB that helps bring excitement to Denton. Yes, I realize that we have to crawl before we can walk. We've watched bad football for at least the last two years. Like many, my ass is getting old too! I would love to see this program on ESPN on a regular basis (across I-35) where most college fans will come to know us as the University of North Texas in Denton, Tx. Additionally, where teams are afraid to play us or at least lined up to play in Denton. Anyway, just my idle thoughts, comments and BS for the day.

Santa Comes Early for Alexander July 10, 2007 TexasHoops.com Recruiting Staff Going into the Great American Shootout in Denton this past weekend, Troy Alexander was simply hoping to help his Dallas Heroes AAU squad win some games and accelerate his college recruitment. Boy, did the sleeper 6-foot-1, 175-pound point guard from Highland Park High School do both. Not only did Alexander help the Heroes to the GASO NBA Red Division title, he also earned a scholarship offer from his top school and accepted it on the spot. "I just got off the phone with Coach (Kerry) Keating at Santa Clara and I verbally committed to them," Alexander said on Tuesday afternoon. "They've been one of my top schools since early on. I had gone up there for an Elite camp in June and I really liked the coaching staff and really liked the campus. I feel that their conference is really good for my style of play and I didn't see any reason to wait so I committed." Santa Clara had been recruiting Alexander for some time, but after the point guard led the Heroes to the GASO title and playing well along the way, the Broncos put the offer on the table. "They really like how I'm a pure point guard and how I find my scorers and don't make mistakes," Alexander said. "I'm able to get the ball from point A to point B. I can run the team and run the show." Alexander also earned offers from Stephen F. Austin and Centenary after the GASO, and more from the likes of American, Harvard, and other Patriot League and Ivy League schools could have been on their way. But Santa Clara was the perfect fit for the point guard who's still working hard to improve his game, so Alexander didn't hesitate. "It's all been a whirlwind," Alexander said. "I got to win the tournament and I expected recruiting to go into August where I'd take some visits, but all of a sudden this happens. I'm excited." Texas Hoops Analysis: TROY is a true point guard that gets everyone involved on the court. He is very good at using his body against defenses and quicker players. He has tremendous court vision and makes the tough pass seem easy. He is a very smart defender with quick hands and feet. He competes on both ends of the court and is scrappy. He is a very heady player on offense and will hit the open three and has a nice floater and pull-up jumper in the paint.

Great looking site! I like it! Now, is it just a football site? Can you also link our basketball board along with the official UNT site? http://meangreenhoops.com/component/option..._smf/Itemid,26/ Lastly, can you reserve a spot for our AD to provide quarterly updates? Great job!!!

There were a number of top kids missing. I knew that Bobo Morgan was committed to a national tournament or two this summer. Nolan Dennis played with the Dallas Mustangs 15U at the tournament in Carrollton in May. I believe they play in the NCAA division. The best performance of the day (or at least what I witnessed) came from Damarious "Shug" Jones of Dallas Pinkston. (Dallas Showtyme Elite) Shug is the best player in Dallas. Unfortunately, I believe grades saddled him late in the season last year. I'd love for JJ to get this kid in the 08 class! HP solidified my opinion that they may be the team to beat in 4A. (Their top kids play for the Dallas Heroes) On a facilities note: We need a center court scoreboard at the Super Pit real bad! With SMU's huge scoreboard fresh on my mind (Global Games) the pit seems to be lacking big time. RV, give me a call! I'll make the first donation! The quality of the game action photo's of each individual player (on the wall was phenominal) Best looking pictures I've ever seen! I guess we will wait until school starts to update the banners hanging in the Pit. The 2007 NCAA tournament appearance was not up.

Excellent points GrayEagle, I kinda knew that. You might be surprised to know that at least 1 kid annually is legit D1 material. Chris Young was one of their better players and I believe was drafted in the NBA; electing baseball instead. Billy Allen (son of SMU head coach Sonny) could play for anyone as well. Maybe the long pending UNT law school will help our image (if it ever comes about before the Trinity River project) I really do like their team.
-
Or at least why don't they consider UNT? I can only remember 1 kid from HP that signed with NT. (place kicker Witt Smith) The kid really had a leg but left after 1 year. If I remember correctly, one of his teammates stole some personal belongings from his Kerr dorm. Anyway, HP is my early pre-season favorite in hoops to make it to Austin (Class 4A) The attached Tx Hoops article is about the Edwards brothers, however, I really like their point guard (Troy Alexander) and C/PF (Bonner McDermott). The HP kids will play for the Dallas Heroes where they continue to take down some of the more talented AAU teams and players in the state. Coming to a local UNT gym near you. (during the Great American Shootout) this weekend. Check them out! http://texashoops.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=687248 July 4, 2007 Blue Zertuche TexasHoops.com Recruiting Analyst They may be twins, but on the court they are a bit different. 6'3", 190-pound shooting guard Matt Edwards and twin brother 6'5", 200-pound Pierce Edwards, play a rugged hard-nose game where they never concede to the competition, but with different styles. Their recruitment is identical, and they aren't ready to part just yet. The Edwards' are part of the Highland Park HS team. Their unique styles of play make them players to watch this weekend at the Great American Shoot-Out and they both will draw a big crowd among the recruiters while playing for the Dallas Heroes. "We are getting recruited by Ivy League schools among others," said Matt. "Columbia, Princeton, Yale, Harvard, VMI, West Point(Army), Navy, Air Force, American, William and Mary, SFA, Dallas Baptist, Trinity (San Antonio), and LeHigh are all on our list." "We don't like one over the other," said Pierce about their recruitment. "We are open to everything and like all options. We are excited about playing in front of all the coaches in July." On this large list of colleges, many of them are recruiting the Edwards brothers together and also separately. They say that they are happy for each other, but aren't ready to go separate ways yet. "We are always together," said Pierce. We have played all sorts of sports together since we were little. We would like to go to college and play together on the same team." "The first option would be for us to go to the same school together, but it is fine for us to go somewhere different," said Matt. The Edwards' compete at an intense level, even when it is a game of 42 at home. Daniel will be a nice addition to Highland Park's Varsity. "It always gets intense, especially when our other brother, Daniel [Edwards] gets involved," added Pierce. The third brother, Daniel, is a 6'7" sophomore to be and plays for the Pro Skills. "He adds a lot to the work out that we do. We are able to do post drills and shooting drills with him in there," said Matt. The twins were both All-State pitchers during their sophomore year at Covenant Christian (TAPPS 1A), and All-State 6-man Football. Matt is interested in Pre-law, and Pierce is undecided on what to study in college. Texas Hoops Analysis: MATTis a tough overall player that can knock down the three point shot. He is a good ball handler and a smart wing player. He uses a variety of moves to escape the defense and will finish at the basket on back-door cuts. He plays physical, will rebound and battle on both ends. Pierce is a versatile player that will mix it up inside and out. He can hit the open shot, or finish strong at the basket. He will take advantage of a smaller guard by posting up. He is a good rebounder, passer, and a physical player.

Colt McCoy was a legit 6-3 during the Texas High School Basketball Championship tournament (his senior year of 2005) He also had/has a much better football physique to take the pounding at the D1 level. Thank God young Riley finally came to his senses; if he had any serious thoughts of playing quarterback. I couldn't imagine any possible scenario where he would have received any PT at UT. (in 4 years at any position other than FG/extra point holder). Yes, that's brutal but imho, the truth! If we had any QB's whatsoever, we wouldn't be realistically talking about him taking the helm any time soon. Go Mean Green!

Who am I? The last time North Texans experienced so much euphoria over a QB signing was when I was the Class 5A Player of the Year and had just lead my team to the 5A Texas State High School Football Championship for Flower Mound Marcus. I was a much bigger QB with equal or better stats (touchdown & passing yards). I signed with NT vowing to prove the other major D1's wrong.

June 30, 2007 Jason Suchomel Orangebloods.com When Southlake Carroll quarterback Riley Dodge committed to Texas back in February, he made the decision knowing he was being recruited as an athlete and knowing that his father had previously accepted the head coaching job at North Texas. Even with those factors seemingly weighing against Texas, Dodge decided to give the Longhorns an early commitment, largely based on the fact that he's been a fan of the Texas program for as long as he can remember. Three months later, Dodge still has those same strong feelings towards the Texas program, but he decided this week that wearing the burnt orange and white may not be the best decision for his future. After really struggling with the decision for the past few days, Dodge put in a call to the Texas coaching staff on Friday to withdraw his commitment, informing them that he'll be following his father to play at North Texas. "I grew up from when I was little wanting to play at UT. I'm still the biggest UT fan you'll find," Dodge said. "It has a lot to do with me playing quarterback. At North Texas, I feel like I have the opportunity to play early and I know the offense in and out. And not many kids get to play for their dads in high school and in college." Playing time, the quarterback position and the chance to play for his dad were instrumental in Dodge's decision, but his choice runs a little deeper than it appears on the surface. His grandfather, who lived in the Austin area, suffered a stroke earlier in the year. He has since moved to North Texas to be closer to his family, and Dodge said the opportunity to stay close to a important member of his family was another factor in his final decision. "It's been rough on our family. I would love for my grandpa to be able to see me come play college football. He's one of the people I look up to so much," Dodge said. As a junior, Dodge was one of the country's most productive prep quarterbacks, throwing for for 4,184 yards and 54 touchdowns and rushing for 1,119 yards and 13 scores. He averaged more than 330 yards of offense per game. After finishing up his career at Southlake Carroll, Dodge will now take his talents to North Texas, where he'll play for his father Todd, who built the Carroll program into one of the best the nation has seen in the past decade. "I still follow Texas and will still root them on. My dad was kind of iffy about (the switch). He was happy either way. He was so happy when I committed to Texas," Riley said. "But I feel like I have an opportunity to play at an up and coming program and I think I have a chance to start." The decision to switch seems to fit like a glove – Dodge will get to play quarterback, he'll play for his dad, he'll step into the same offense that he ran in high school and he'll get to stay close to his family – but the call to withdraw his commitment was extremely difficult move for the 6-foot, 183-pound playmaker. In fact, Dodge said that the last few days have been some of the most gut-wrenching of his life, and he even had trouble telling his friends about his change of heart. "It's been sickening. It's been hard to sleep at night. I have Texas stuff all over my bedroom and I've had that ever since I was a little kid. It's taken a toll on me the past couple of weeks," said Dodge. "I've gotten to be pretty good friends with some of the guys playing at Texas. I talked to (Carroll teammate and Texas commit) Tre (Newton) today. He's one of my best friends. He's been really supportive but it was hard to even talk to him."
