It's always nice to read a story about a North Texas organization doing something great like this. It is sad that they are having to operate under such difficult circumstances. For years I have felt like our cheerleaders do not get enough attention. I hear about the dancers, but not much about the cheerleaders. Travis, Maybe you should pass this story on to the Denton Record Chronicle. The Denia person isn't the only one who can write a letter to the editor. Thanks for sharing.

On the field, Riley never quit. I'm going to focus on our future now, because I think it's very bright. I have no ill will towards Riley, but I am disappointed in his decision.

He gave the Mean Green everything he had, except the last 2 years of his eligibility.

4 Teams You Would Like To Home & Home With
Side Show Joe replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
I hope we can keep the series with both Houston and SMU, but that will only happen if we can win our share of those games. I think continuing to alternate the Army and Navy home and home series would be a great idea. Here is my big team, and going after this team is a stretch. Nebraska! They are moving to the Big 10+2. They won't be playing any conference games in Texas anymore. I don't think the Big 12 -2 want their teams scheduling Nebraska. Nebraska still needs to keep a presence in Texas for recruiting purposes. They may be willing to play in our new stadium because the states of Oklahoma and Kansas separate Texas and Nebraska, so we should be able to accommodate the number of tickets their fans need. Nebraska coming to our new stadium for a home and home series would generate local and national news coverage for our program, and set our expectations for other programs wanting to play us. Like I said, it's a long shot, but shouldn't we at least try? Does anyone think it could work? -
Bright House holds over 45,000.

Great win. UNT is looking very strong. I'm still out of town. Any idea what the attendance was tonight?

Very nice.

I hope we do the same thing. It is my opinion that when you take these games and don't get a return trip, you are announcing to the college football world that your institution is not as important as the institution you are taking the big paycheck from. I think 2 for 1's say the same thing. I hate 2 for 1's. 2 for 1's are the reason we end up with 4 and 5 home games in some of our future schedules, instead of 6, like we should have. When we were scheduling teams to play at Fouts, I understood we couldn't get a decent team into that place, but we are not scheduling for Fouts anymore. We were told part of the reason for building the new stadium was to bring in better teams. I would be happy if we passed on "opportunity games" with schools that won't play us at our place, and pass on any school looking for a 2 for 1. There are other schools out there.

I also feel that playing the fight song and quieting it down while the kicker goes for the extra point is weird. For people like me who are rhythmical challenged, it is very hard to follow along with the rest of the crowd during the kick, and many stop the cheer if we miss the kick. I'd be much happier if we would fire Boomer directly after the touchdown, and then wait to play the fight song after the extra point attempt. Then the band can play the song one good time with the crowd able to sing along. Thoughts?

I agree. We need a talented DT or 4. We can't chase the kid away, but if we find other comparable DT's ready to sign, well, sorry. That said, I don't know we will find others of his caliber this late in the game. Maybe we should try and have his Juco coach reason with him. It's very simple. "1. Come to North Texas and start for a few seasons, or 2. wait for Florida, maybe get an offer, and ride the pine for a few years, behind all of the talented 4 & 5 star recruits they already have". I'd take option one.

Great way to start conference play. Good win. I hope attendance will continue to improve. Our team deserves a good crowd every night. Go Mean Green!

I hope so. I haven't seen anything saying he isn't. McCarney is putting together a very nice staff. Lets hope he can keep it together. My father-in-law said the Sports Animal out of Norman Oklahoma was praising North Texas for hiring him, and saying what a great coach he is.

I really like this hire. I think many of us were hoping Canales could bring him in when Leftwich went to Tulsa. I'm happy we got him.

Grant. He was the WR coach at Western Michigan.

Thank you.

Is there going to be a Dave Campbell winter issue? If so, does anyone know when it hits the stands?

Q & A With Mwc Commissioner Craig Thompson
Side Show Joe replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I'd like a move to the MWC. I think an invite might be contingent on UNT agreeing to add baseball, and maybe increase the athletic budget. On a related note, another board is reporting a rumour that June Jones is interviewing for the Maryland job. If he leaves it could be a plus for North Texas when our series with SMU starts up, if they make a bad hire. -
Without having seen them practice, or what our new coaches have in mind for the defense or special teams, I can't say how we will do in home games. Truth is, there are so many variables that can't be accounted for, it makes it impossible to predict our performance. That said, 4-2 sounds about right to me.

lol... I should have provided more information. I just graduated with my Masters degree, and I have a job. Actually, being in the graduate program at UNT helped me get my job. Your right though. Grad school is the way to go.

Welcome to the board. North Texas played its first official game in 1913, against TCU, though the school had been playing football as a club sport from about 1903. In 1922 the students selected the Eagle as the school mascot. North Texas greats include Pittsburgh Steeler Hall of Famer Mean Joe Greene, and AFL great Abner Haynes. More recently, Patrick Cobbs of the Miami Dolphins and Jamario Thomas were back to back national rushing champions at North Texas. Current running back Lance Dunbar was an SI All American honorable mention his sophomore year. Some of our traditions are: the claw (tuck your pinky and ring finger, and curve your pointer, middle, and thumb) and say or yell "Go Mean Green!" After scoring a touchdown the Talons (schools spirit organization) fire our cannon named Boomer. We have an old Model A painted in school colors The Battle Flag- A Texas flag in green, light green, and white. Being from Alabama, you may not get as excited about that one. When we win, we light the tower at our administration building green. I'm sure I left out others, but this should get you started. Go Mean Green!

With my 500th post I want to announce that I have graduated. I was a Mean Green fan for years before every attending the school, but now I'm done. I look forward to joining the Alumni Aassociation and Mean Green Club. I'm also moving out of the student section. Last week I put my deposit down for season tickets at the new stadium. I just wanted to use this post as an opportunity to say thank you to UNT. The faculty and other students made my time at North Texas a great experience. I also want to thank all of you here at Go Mean Green.com for sharing information and the joy of UNT. Thank you, and Go Mean Green!

Appears That Our Oc Opponents May Be Set Thru 2014
Side Show Joe replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I hope this gets fixed. We should play 2 home and 2 ooc games a season. We don't need 2 body bag games a season either. From this day forward, no more 2 for 1's. I'd much rather watch us play schools like Memphis, Houston, SMU, Tulane, Rice, UTEP, and even LA Tech, then give schools 2 for 1's. 2 for 1's tell our fan base, the other schools fan base, and the college football landscape that we are not as important as the schools we are playing. I don't like the body bag games either, but until we can better fund our athletics we don't have many options. As attendance increases, I'd hope these games become fewer. And, we should never have 2 in the same season. -
Cusa - Mwc Discuss Bond Beyond Bowl Games
Side Show Joe replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
This would be very bad news for North Texas. If C-USA and the MWC develop a marketing alliance, the MWC would have no need to try and hold the DFW market by adding UNT with C-USA having SMU in DFW. The MWC could then stay with their current numbers or focus on adding new markets. It would be bad for the Sun Belt too. It would in essence create a second tier BCS, and the Sun Belt, MAC, and WAC (if it survives) would be reduced to glorified FCS conferences, more then they already are. -
Hair of the Dog by Nazareth. It's old, but it's bold. If you young guys don't know the song, youtube it.

I agree. I can't understand bringing a kid on an official visit all the way from California if you have not offered him a ship, and don't intend to. Just doesn't seem right to me. There has to be more to this story.
